I had a very similar experience visiting a cathedral in Milan. Evidences of the apostasy began showing up in 3 John where John mentions a man named Diotrephes, "who loveth to have the preeminence among them", (the church), "receiveth us not". At this point in time, even members of the original 12 weren't regarded as relevant. The marks are found in ancient Egyptian as well.
