Marty Lacker, a member of Elvis' famed Memphis Mafia and one of the best men at Elvis' 1967 wedding, died Monday after suffering from kidney failure. He was 80. He's the second member of the Memphis Mafia to die in recent months, following the November 2016 death of Joe Esposito, the other best man at Elvis' wedding.
'He went to school with (Elvis), that’s how they met. My dad was from New York, the Bronx, and he dressed just like Elvis did. They just formed a bond of friendship through that. They always took up for each other. Both of them went into the army and afterwards, a good friend of his re-introduced them and he went to work for him', said Mr. Lacker's son, Mark. 'They were like brothers. They respected each other'.

In the early days when this all started, Elvis needed a father who had a brain in his head!!!! Elvis would've had a completely different life if he had an attentive father who actually had some sense and payed some attention to what was going on in his son's life instead of just being an observer. His Mother definitely had more influence over her son and it all fell apart when she died, she knew who to keep outta her son's life and she knew that Parker was a demon and these people were all leeches 😢

From what I have read with respect to Vernon he was no better than some of the guys that were hangers on. It seemed Gladys held a job more than Vernon. Maybe I have misunderstood but I just don't think very highly of Vernon. Gladys was a good mother, loved her son and looked out for his best interest. She was better at reading people probably because she cared the most.

Vernon was working with Parker. Parker knew that Vernon was scared of being poor again, and used Vernon to get Elvis to do things he didn't want to do. I believe that's how he got roped into signing the 2nd 5 year movie contracts and doing crappy movies he hated doing!

@@sandralybrand9425 I am sure you are right. I didn't think about Parker working on Vernon. Yes, he didn't want to be poor again and I certainly understand that. My daddy was born in March 1935 in Kentucky. He was the same age as Elvis and grew up poor. His dad worked as a mechanic for a car dealership. Dad talked about living in a 2 room house that you looked down at the floor and could see the ground under the house because of the space between the floor boards. Not a fancy house. Ha ha. Dad was the youngest of 5 kids. Dad moved up to the Chicago area for work and he worked all the overtime he could get. He was always tight with his money. In his old age he would tell me he was always trying to make sure he and mother didn't end up in a soup line. So he was referring to the depression times.

Marty really did help Elvis allot. He was one of the few that would tell Elvis the truth. If it made Elvis mad he got over it. But Marty said he told Elvis the truth because what kinda friend doesn’t tell you the truth? Elvis knew it too. Marty was one of the few that Elvis would listen to. Marty’s family did allot of remodeling of Graceland for Elvis and Vernon! He trusted Marty and them to do a great job for Elvis.

Elvis deserves better from the American people and especially from those he took care of..the dea Geraldo and all those scumbags should be ashamed at what they have done to a good guy and an absolute patriot.all to oust a war in drugs which is s war in people.that war has destroyed our constitution and turned America into a police state.

Marty was the most on top of it guy in the MM. it’s a damn shame Marty wasnt the manager. Uncle Tom and Vernon were from that Depression era PTSD mentality where things can go bad real fast; the upshot is that they managed Elvis from an “ if it aint broke, dont fix it” mode. Marty shows a perfect combo of TCB and artistic growth. Sure, the Vernon/Parker mode generated huge $$, but the costs of the same old same old was devastating. Elvis had zero challenges; he went on auto pilot, got bored, self medicated and died at 42. Marry was totally plugged into Elvis’ mindset. The problem was that Elvis was stubborn as hell and was hell bent to do it his way or no way. All that. But Marty was a solid.

Really hated how these guys always complained how “little money” they made and wasn’t with him for the money. Please, he took Joe came back even when Elvis didn’t need him, probably stabbed Elvis in the back with Parker, gave him 200 hundred dollars and told him he would pay for whatever he needed etc. in the 50’S. So Elvis had 9 guys hanging around not doing a real job, basically partying and paying for whatever they needed and they complain. You can watch interviews with these guys Joe and Lamar always telling Elvis how to spend his money going on vacations and partying up in Vegas. Then you can watch the same interview with these guys talking about how Elvis ate and took prescription drugs when these guys did the exact same thing! Then they continue to make money off of him after his death. Even when he was alive they stabbed him in the back just for money. Thanks to these clowns you can’t talk to a celeb without a non disclosure agreement. Watch the interview with the cook, she didn’t make that kind of money and worked harder than these guys plus she has some choice words about them. Funny how a man can not even have a high school diploma yet can be a manager of a Dept Store like he said. I believe Lamar never really had a job before he started hanging with Elvis, he was basically a fan. Most of these guys had aspirations of having real jobs yet expected Elvis to fund their lifestyles for the rest of their lives. I can’t wait till Lisa Marie’s book comes out.

I’m sure joe was in an impossible spot. If Tom Parker was pressuring him all the time to find out their whereabouts then it was going to be really hard for him to tell Parker, “I can’t tell you where we are.” I’m sure Elvis was really mad over the betrayal but it’s obvious joe was more concerned about making Parker mad than he was about Elvis getting mad. I can see how Elvis felt very betrayed and very angry but if his manager was demanding to know certain things it really put joe in a very tough spot. Elvis would have been impossible for me to put up with. He was unbelievably disrespectful and rude to his employees. I couldn’t have put up with that.

@@randallanthony1794 I personally don't trust a lot of what Marty Lacker had to say. Right from the offset of this interview he gets dates, timings and logistics completely wrong. His telling is suspect when he says the kids at Humes used to tease him and Elvis about who would outdress the other the next day because apparently they dressed the same; which is the complete opposite of what Red had to say about how Elvis was bullied and how he'd already stopped one beating before the infamous hair cutting one. Also, by the time Marty got to Humes (he was 15) Elvis was 17 and getting ready to leave. Marty was at least a year below him..... and the sh*t keeps coming from that point on, especially about Joe Esposito. You can feel Marty's hatred of him.
I can give you what I believe is closer to the truth of what happened in 1964 if you're interested. Let me know and I'll reply to you.

Not a very good interview, what’s with the brakes of hanging on for a second and not even a second with the interviewer I think he needs a lot of practice to do interviews. You don’t say just a second and stop the interview and don’t come back for one 20 to 30 minutes or more
