    Marty Lacker, a member of Elvis' famed Memphis Mafia and one of the best men at Elvis' 1967 wedding, died Monday after suffering from kidney failure. He was 80. He's the second member of the Memphis Mafia to die in recent months, following the November 2016 death of Joe Esposito, the other best man at Elvis' wedding.
    'He went to school with (Elvis), that’s how they met. My dad was from New York, the Bronx, and he dressed just like Elvis did. They just formed a bond of friendship through that. They always took up for each other. Both of them went into the army and afterwards, a good friend of his re-introduced them and he went to work for him', said Mr. Lacker's son, Mark. 'They were like brothers. They respected each other'.

    Marty is the best! When I first read "Elvis and the Memphis Mafia," Marty came across as being totally forthright and knowledgeable. I get the same impression from this interview. It's even more enjoyable because you get to hear the inflection in his voice, but the information that he presents remains the same. He certainly brings clarity to what transpired behind the scenes. He truly cared about Elvis the Man.

    Must comment on Geller: He probably meant well, but Elvis was a professed, although imperfect, Christian (as am I). Geller encouraged Elvis to dabble in false religions, and I believe the Holy Spirit will not give a Christian true peace when they are dabbling in false religions. Geller should have respected Elvis' Christianity instead of filling his head with crap. He did not help Elvis and hindered his quest for inner peace.

      All religions are wrong. Each has a part correct but not one owns the truth.
      Being worried about not being allowed Home because you said certain words or didn't say them is pure foolishness.
      We return to Heaven regardless of what we do or say because that's where we come from.
      We had a life before this one. We knew we were coming into life on earth. We were full grown people before we became who we are now.
      If some darn thing would actually prevent you from returning Home, no one would be here now.
      They'd be too afraid.
      Not going Home is as silly as thinking you're going to get lost in your dreams one night and never wake up.
      We are eternal souls having a human experience.

    Elvis would have been sued into bankruptcy if he would have been treating employees this way today. You can’t live or employ people under this kind of delusion, that you would mistreat or abuse your employees like this and get away with it, especially when you get on a mic and humiliate someone in front of a criwd. What an awful unforgivable way to treat people in front of thousands of people. That’s an ego run amuck! It’s far more humane and decent to settle your problems off the stage. Paying customers who spend a lot of money to buy a ticket to see your performance deserve a heck of a lot better than to feel like they have just been put in the middle of a fight or to be forced to watch an employee being publicly humiliated or berated in front of an audience.

      I think she was pregnant when they married. No first pregnancy is 9 months. They're usually closer to 10. She could've been up to 4 weeks along.
      Why did she pick the style of wedding dresses that women wore when "with child" ?
      Why make it a secret but then not be secretive about it ?
      There's too many clues towards that being the truth. Plus, it's the one reason Elvis would go through with it.
      She just got lucky to have Lisa Marie 9 months to the day of their wedding.

    I think what Elvis did on stage to Kathy and the sweets was extremely rude and not ok. We all know if the roles were switched, Elvis would absolutely go feral and take out his gun. I can understand wanting to make jokes, but there is a line and you shouldn’t crack a joke on someone else‘s butt and bring them down or shame them in that way. I hate people who do that in general. That‘s not a joke just a lame excuse to make on. People get mad when you tread others how they tread you and I think that resonates a lot with Elvis. I think it was disrespectful what he did truly and I can promise a lot of people would have even slapped Elvis on stage for what he said. Absolutely awful.

    All I'm going to say, unless someone replies with something that needs a response is this: JD Sumner and the Blackwood Brothers were Gladys Presley's favourite Gospel Group and they (including JD) sang at Gladys Presley's Funeral. Given this I would believe JD's recollection of knowing Elvis Presley since he was 14 years of age over Marty Lacker's bullsh*t attempt to wholly discredit him and White Gospel Groups. The Blackwood Brothers were huuuuugely popular back in the day. Makes me question a lot of what Marty Lacker says, especially the jobs he supposedly held in regards to the Entertainment Business, because he sounds like he knew nothing at all; or is it simply his hatred of certain people that blinds him to the facts? Take your pick.

    • @jkrein82

      Mr. Lacker also worked in the music business both during his time with Elvis and after The King's 1977 death. In 1967, Lacker helped launch 'Pepper Records' and went on to become American Studios' vice president and business manager. In the early '70s, Lacker also helped co-found the local Grammy chapter and also served as the chairman of the original Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.
      If not for Marty Lacker, Elvis might never have gone to American Studios in 1969 to record the landmark 'From Elvis in Memphis' record.
      If not for Mr. Lacker, then, the world might never have had such Presley hits as 'Suspicious Minds' - The King's last chart-topper - and 'In the Ghetto', among many others.

    • @Della624
      @Della624 Před měsícem

      @@jkrein82 This will be long and I explain why it is long and will be split into parts.
      *PART ONE: *
      Do you know the strangest thing about all of that? No-one ever questioned Marty Lacker on what he said about where he went and what positions he held before, during and after his work with Elvis Presley. It’s all simply been accepted as the truth when it really needed questioning.
      Marty Lacker had this innate ability to give you a smidgen of the truth so that when you do a cursory look into whether or not he is telling the truth, you will initially think ‘Okay, yeah that appears up front and the truth’ but when you look just beyond that, and not very far beyond that, you discover that in truth it is only his truth and not the actual truth.
      What I have noticed over the many years is that there has been very little, if any, corroboration between one telling to another, so Marty Lacker has been able to embellish, exaggerate and downright lie about many things for decades without being questioned.
      Over the years I think so many of the Elvis Fan Community appear to go from one interview to another, one book to another, one video to another, one documentary to another and so on and so on without corroborating what has been said in each telling and also the tellings of other members of “The Memphis Mafia”, as well as friends and working associates of Elvis Presley’s (I don’t blame them because it is hard work to corroborate and unpack all the shit that is out there). Still, simply because of that, it leaves someone like me, who can be arsed/assed/bothered, a lot to unpack when responding about Marty Lacker, so please be prepared because while I could simply inform you that ‘largely what you have stated is questionable’, I believe you should have context for why I would say that :D
      I give you examples as we go along.
      In Part 4 of your interview with Marty Lacker, he states he started up his own Company after he “left” (it’s up for debate) Elvis in 1967 (this too is up for debate) and at that time was contacted by someone he knew at Pepper Studios (Marty being contacted by Pepper_Tanner Studios is up for debate) to help start up Pepper-Tanner Studios
      www.goldminemag.com/articles/marty-lacker
      Here Marty tells a different story. Firstly that he left Elvis in 1968. To be brutally honest, if you use your interview as a basis for your quote and the links I can supply that contradict Mary Lacker, then this interview at this link is complete and utter bullshit, but what you have quoted that appears in this interview you’ve quoted as being the truth.
      From what I have read elsewhere, around the same time, Marty Lacker has stated that when he went to Tanner-Pepper he also started up a Company called “Mempro Incorporated”, which represented Publishers and had a department called ‘Artist Management’ - _Artist Management is not what I believe most people think it is - they could possibly have thought he ran a company that Managed Artists which would be erroneous. Artist Management is someone who would advise UP-COMING Artists to help them make informed decisions in regards to the Music Industry_. (I put up coming in Capitals because established Artists would have no need for Artist Management because they would have their own Managers, Business Manager, Road Managers, Producers and so on).
      Marty had also stated that he had been Managing The Gentrys at that time. This is simply not true. The Gentry’s had reformed in 1969 with Jimmy Hart as their lead Singer - but three attempts at singles never got them into the top 40 - No hits. To associate himself with a hit making group, such as how The Gentrys had *once* been, Marty attempts to associate himself with being with Chips Momon when he produced “Keep On Dancin” at American Sound Studios, but that hit was in 1965 and got to Number 4 in the Charts - Marty was nowhere near it at the time - he was with Elvis Presley as his Co-Foreman of The Memphis Mafia.
      What’s also interesting is that you will not find any evidence anywhere of Marty Lacker being The Gentry’s Manager, nor will you find any evidence of Marty Lacker producing The Gentry’s
      Let’s start unpacking this bit in PART TWO

    • @Della624
      @Della624 Před měsícem

      @jkrein82
      PART TWO:
      Marty knew someone at Pepper Studios because he had previously worked there as a DJ playing their jingles before he had met Elvis Presley and joined Pepper-Tanner Studios not to help set it up but as a General Manager in 1968. Since there was a year gap from leaving or being fired from Elvis Presley to joining Pepper-Tanner Studios, I would say it seems far more logical for Marry to have been contacting them, since he had worked there in the past as a DJ playing their jingles, rather than the other way round, since the Pepper-Tanner studios would have been up and running for the entire year of 1967 (this can be found online).
      The first year Marty was at Tanner-Pepper Studios (1968) he produced 4 records for a Group called *“The Shortkuts”* - the records were _One Way Street, Your Eyes May Shine, Hold It Baby & Loosen Up_. The same year he produced one record for _*_“The Avantis”_*_ called _You’ve got a Funny Way_, and then Co-produced with Charles Chalmers _Just a Little While_ for *“Ollie Jackson”*. NONE of them were hits, baby or otherwise.
      Also, Marty never produced anything for anyone after that year but in your interview he states he PRODCUED AND DISCOVERED Rita Coolidge.
      From what I have managed to gather is that Rita Coolidge started out making Jingles at Pepper Sound Studios (Pepper Studios and then Pepper-Tanner Studios later on) when Marty was a DJ there playing those Jingles. Rita moved on, Marty didn’t. Rita went to Los Angeles and was discovered by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. Rita became a backing singer for people like Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills etc. That’s Rita Coolidge’s beginnings.
      Rita did go back to Pepper-Tanner Studios in 1969 to record a couple of songs through Chip Momon’s American Group Productions, but as General Manager of Pepper-Tanner Studios Marty would NOT have been responsible for producing her records he would only been responsible for the booking and overseeing her recording sessions. So, Marty did not discover her, he did not produce her (Chips Momon was producing her records) and Marty was not her Manager. The extent of their contact would have been Marty booking Rita’s sessions for her and insuring they went as smoothly as possible.
      However, did this put Marty in Contact with Chips Moman at American Group Productions, as it was known at that time? Yes it did, but wholly not in the capacity Marty has bragged about over the decades.
      All in all, what it all boils down to is that there is a smidgen of truth in what Marty Lacker had stated over the decades, however, the lies are within the embellishments and exaggerations. For instance, did Marty have contact with Rita Coolidge during his times at Pepper Sound Studios and later Pepper-Tanner Studios? Yes he did. Was that contact in the capacity of discovering her, producing her and managing her? No to all of them
      Another example: Did Marty Lacker produce some records at Pepper Studios? Yes he did in 1968. Did any of them make the top 100 Hundred? No they didn’t. Did he produce other groups or singers, particularly Rita Coolidge or The Gentry’s? No he didn’t. Did he produce Dionne Warwick? No he didn’t, but his Company Mempro Incorporated did get some publishing rights on a song she recorded.
      This is a link to Pepper Studios and Pepper-Tanner Studios - www.jingleweb.nl/index.php/w-b-tanner/
      Marty Lacker was employed as a General Manager at Pepper-Tanner Studios. His duties would have included co-ordinating with Artists and overseeing the daily operations of a recording studio.
      ONTO PART THREE....

    • @Della624
      @Della624 Před měsícem

      @jkrein82
      PART THREE:
      Lastly,
      *_If not for Marty Lacker Elvis MIGHT never have recorded at American Sound Studios. If not for Marty Lacker the world MIGHT never have had such Presley Hits as Suspicious Minds, In The Ghetto, or others
      If not for Mr. Lacker, then, the world might never have had such Presley hits as 'Suspicious Minds' - The King's last chart-topper - and 'In the Ghetto', among many others_*
      All we have is what Marty Lacker says about how he got Elvis to record at American Sound Studios, but even so, despite his proven embellishments and lies, let’s still take his word for it.
      In your interview Marty states that Elvis Presley had the songs in his folder ready for recording and that he was going to record them in Nashville. If Elvis Presley had them in his folder to record, then Elvis Presley was going to record them. Period! More importantly though, if Elvis Presley already had them in his folder ready to record, then how did he get them if, according to Marty Lacker, all the songs getting to Elvis was through Hill & Range and nowhere else - and that all the songs from Hill and Range were shit?
      _ 1) Chips Momon states in an interview that it was he (Chips Momon) who introduced Elvis to “In The Ghetto”, because he had produced Mark James’ release the year before and played that release to Elvis - who, despite Parker and RCA’s concerns, fell in love with it and demanded to record it
      2) Even if we were to go with what Marty Lacker had to say, given what we know about Elvis and his choosing songs and so on, if the songs were already in Elvis Presley’s folder to be recorded, he would have recorded them regardless of what Studio he recorded them in
      3) That they were recorded at American Sound Studios put American Sound Studios firmly on the map and forever intertwined with Elvis Presley, it didn’t change anything for Elvis, since Chips Momon has stated they would have been hit records regardless
      By the way there is no record anywhere of Marty Lacker becoming Vice President and Business Manager at American Sound Studios. Absolutely nowhere
      Lastly, for me, I think the truth of the matter is this below:
      www.goldminemag.com/articles/marty-lacker
      *Marty Lacker states:* _So Elvis leaves and Freddy (Bienstock) looks at me and said, “I notice Mr. Lacker you keep playing him songs from a certain publishing company, Screen-Gems. Are you making money off of this?”
      I looked over at him and said, “Yeah.” See, that was part of my company (Marty’s Company being Mempro Incorporated)_
      This alone, for me, explains such a lot. For me, it not only tells me Marty Lacker’s motivation but it also tells me WHY he would ferociously attack Joe Esposito and Tom Parker and Priscilla Presley (I don’t blame him in regards to Priscilla - she is a money grabbing lying piece of shit that cares for no one or anything other than her prestige and fame in her own head).
      As for Marty Lacker’s importance in the Music Industry, if indeed he was so important, (George Klein was doing things in the Memphis Music Industry waaaaay before Marty Lacker arrived on the scene - that can be verified) after what I have found out, it appears to me that Marty Lacker did not get where he did through expertise or knowledge, he got where he did simply because of his associations with other talented people such as Elvis Presley and Chips Momon.
      All in all, what it all boils down to *for me* is that Marty Lacker’s only VERIFIABLE claim to fame is that he was in Elvis Presley’s Company sometime during the 1960’s. For me, everything else is up for considerable debate and considering how Marty Lacker in this interview could not keep his “facts” straight on this subject even for one minute (let alone throughout the entire interview on other things) I’m deferring on the side of there being a hefty load of bullshit stinking up the entire telling.
      By the way, when Marty “left” Elvis in 1967 he either left or was fired depending on what you read/hear and by whom, because Billy Smith states that in 1967 there was a culling of people at Graceland and Marty was one of the people who got their pink slips - Billy wasn’t happy about that and left the same year because Billy and Marty’s wives, Jo and Patsy, were inseparable.
      *As a side note:* It was Red West who left of his own accord in 1967 because he was livid about what happened at the Wedding (I don’t blame him but thankfully he got over it) and he was also breaking out into films doing stunt work and bit parts and also acting parts. It was also Red West who would come back periodically to work as a Bodyguard in between dry spells in the Movie making world, so he could still be making some money for his family. This is ALL verifiable from Red West himself.
      However, from 1967 Marty Lacker is nowhere to be found in anything regarding Elvis Presley other than what he claims; not home movies, not behind the scenes, not fans photos, not anything - not even from the other members of the Clique, especially BFF Billy Smith.
      Sorry this is so long but this is why I think it is all questionable. I think it is worth a read, but it is all up to you if you want to or not 🙂
