@@darrenyoung5383 OH OH OH!.. WONDERFUL question... ok 100% the G&L is more shredable! strictly because of the frets. the frets are a nice size on the g&l where the strat has that old school super thin fretwire. bending and fast playing are a bit harder. are you looking for a shredder in the G&L price range??

G&L was for George & Leo, as in George Fullerton & Leo Fender, after Mr. Fullerton gave up his share of the company, Mr. Fender kept the name G&L and called it, Guitars by Leo. Thanks for this awesome run down. I have several G&Ls, the S500, A Legacy, and an ASAT, along with a limited edition collectable. This was really cool listening to the specific differences. 1 x texan special HSS
    1 x American delux

On a price point the G and L is a little cheaper too 👍
Fender guitars though do hold there money better so as a investment are better!!
Fender has become a powerful marketing brand which is helped by the old rockers who still play them David gilmour ( guitar god) is the reason why I bought my first Fender strat lol

While I was having some work done to it, re-crown and a Tusq nut, I had Graph Tech String Saver Saddles added to it. The GTSS saddles reduced the excess treble, and the bottom end rings out fuller and richer, at least to my ears.

part of the beauty of a G&L is the passive treble base wiring (PTB). So I had a legacy tribute I also found to have excess treble and so simple rolled the treble off a bit with the treble knob to like 7-8 and it was great, no need for any other mods.

@@DKprojects9 I was thinking about this for the past few days and there's a variable that I can't confirm at this point. I bought mine used off Reverb in "Mint" condition. Mint meant that it had some heavy spots of wear on the frets and a high fret too. So I sent it to Sweetwater and had it plek'd. At the same time I had them install the new saddles and nut. As part of the plek and setup they might have adjusted the pickup height too. I never thought to ask, but that could have also been a factor.

I actually own a G&L Legacy USA that I ordered custom build (not bragging...blessed to have it). It is THE best playing Strat style guitar I’ve ever played. The fit and finish are well above the Fender (although I do like Fender and own them). Both nice instruments, but G&L is amazing. The ONLY gripe I have is that the middle and bridge pups are slightly too bright for my liking and I find myself fighting the tone knobs. That neck pickup compares with the most layered and sweet tones I’ve come across. For some background....25+ years playing, I own a lot of guitars, and play with other musicians 3 days per week on average.

I guessed them all right and like the g&l better its more refined on the second track with the chords there may have been more bottom end thats less desirable on the g&l but still overall better and a g&l with a maple board might fix that.g&l definitely handles the gain better.g&l wins im definitely buying one im starting to not even like fender

I have a nice upgraded mim strat and a G&L custom shop legacy. If you're a strat lover you really need both. They are two very different guitars. You can't deck a G&L dual fulcrum bridge, they can be but do not function right and require new saddle screws. Everyone needs a strat that floats and one that's decked.

As per these tests I liked the Fender more because it was more clear, clean, twangy to my ears BUT, a few things I think should have been taken into consideration: 1)Maple fretboard vs rosewood...these changes the tone!. 2)G&L has a low cut knob, you should have set it to 7 before starting the comparison. Without these considerations the winner isn't clear. Regards

Irish ale is a great finish. I just wish they'd stop putting cherry on Tribute models and not offering the maple option. Cherry is like Ibanez's laurel, it's 'imitation rosewood.' They're not inferior woods, it's just the heavy grain that ruins the aesthetics for me.

  • @steved4677
    @steved4677 Před 3 lety

I dont think this comparison actually means much. The guitars are inherently quite different. It would be better to compare two maple neck guitars to each other or two open-pore fretboard guitars to each other especially if they are both made in USA so you can be sure the pickups sound as Leo intended.

  • @guyfromnj

I’ve picked up some lousy import g&l’s and some really nice ones. I think that’s a try before you buy situation unless your into Russian roulette with your wallet.
The Mexican fender factory makes some really nice guitars esp when you get into the higher end Mexican guitars like the road worns or the vintera or the older and discontinued classic Lacquer series.
Import g&l’s can have American g&l pickups in them sometimes depending on model. At least they used to.
As far as tones idk I’m watching on my phone.
The fender is a more appealing looking guitar to me in this instance hands down. That’s a pretty guitar man. It’s sexy in a very classic way. Like Rita Hayworth or something.
Good video. Which trem do you prefer?
How’s sustain on your AZ? I’m really interested in the new az’s coming with the strat style bridge. They say it helped a lot with sustain. That’s my only gripe my az is the sustain is lacking in a noticeable way. I have one of the new ones preordered.

OK first... the fender is sexier for sure!! im not sure about the G&L QC issues but im sure it happens.. i like two point trems better always.. but the fender has a classic bridge with a big block hense the classic tone.
as far as my AZ goes... i still think that its an incredible guitar.. the sustain is very good.. not INSANE but very very good.. i didnt hear about the strat style bridges??? i saw the tele style AZ and im SURE that will have a SICK tone because barrel saddles and hard tail bridges always make for wonderful sustain...
      which AZ do you have???

@@jimmyfranklinI wish I had just bought a prestige. I have a Indonesian az. I had planned on selling it and upgrading to the prestige but then covid hit and shipping prices are outrageous so I haven’t sold it yet. The new ones I’m talking about basically are the same exact guitar but with a gotoh strat bridge that rests on the body like a strat. You can still float it but like a strat. The body isn’t routed out like the current az’s. They are still making the current as well but these new ones are a offshoot. They have different pickups as well. The video Ibanez put out talk about how the different bridge helped with sustain because of contact to the body yada yada yada transference of vibrations etcetc. The bridge is different from prestige to import the block is more substantial on the prestige and that probably helps too.
The tele az’s look really cool and I dig mini humbuckers.

Fender guitars was started by George Fullerton and Leo Fender. They hold esteem due to their historical brand recognition.
G&L (George & Leo) was created after selling the fender corporation to CBS. G&L guitars are far superior to fender.
Leo Fender also partnered to produce Music man guitars, which are far better guitars than both Fender and G&L. Leo Fender learned from his early days at Fender and produced better instruments with both later companies.
The problem is, people are so attached to the Fender brand that they are incapable of noticing the obvious.
