I think he needs more protection from those in front of him, but in a 'normal' team that doesn't pile pressure on the defence for long periods of the game, he would have that naturally. He remains excellent value for money and would be good to keep for passing on experience to a younger backup player.

We need to upgrade on Coufal. He hasn't been consistent enough for me over the last 12 months and that is the reason I would like to see him moved on. the same goes for Zouma and Aguerd. We need to move Oggy on too. Too old for the PL. The defence is the last line so it needs to be as tight as a nuns knickers which it definitely isn't at the moment. We haven't in my opinion upgraded on Dawson and we really do miss him.

What's not talked about enough is how Coufal's pay/contract probably plays into Johnson contact talks. Yes Johnson is only asking 50 from my understanding, which is reasonable for what he does, but when your starter is only making 35 it becomes a real issue. I don't know what Johnson's current number is but if you give Johnson his 50 and and then Coufal the 70 to set things right you've just upped your weekly by probably about 70 a week in one position which has to affect the dreadful FFP regulations.

But I love him & his committal, he has 7 league assists already this season (joint 11th with 10 others including Foden Nunes Maddison & our own JWP) and he is worth to be paid more than he is. His poor form was when he was playing through a hernia & put off the surgery for the good of the club

Anyone with any pace absolutely destroys Coufal. Like Cresswell over the last 2 seasons teams simply and rightly target him. Doku and Luis Diaz will embarrass him. I really see no point in triggering the extension. I'd use JWP to prise Walker-Peters from Southampton and Ings to prise Justin from Leicester. Both of those can play left and right and the wing back roles. They also only have one year left on their contracts. So my full/wing backs for next season would be Emerson, Walker-Peters, Justin and Chesters. Incidentley Emerson would be my Captain.

I understand the extension clause giving both the club and player stability, but if you are seeing a potentially significant improvement in the player as he adapts to the league, you don’t want a disgruntled player/squad giving an opportunity to other clubs to start advanced talks disrupt. your coaching.
