- part 2 upgrading the steering with spherical joints . I show some of the things I do to drill and tap a straight hole in metal tubing. A few of the problems I encounter along the way.

Years later, and on the other side of the planet, I made a similar modification on my Husqvarna (similar to Craftsman) mower. However, I used two spherical joints with female thread, and simply used a long length of threaded rod (all 12mm size) for the tie rod. I had to give the rod a few kinks, to get the joints at a more favorable angle, and to clear a drive pulley. I did put lock nuts against the joint fittings. Also needed spacers above and below the 'ball' of the spherical joint, and thick spring washers did the trick. The installation works like a charm.
I guess the manufacturers never had in mind people using the equipment for more then the warranty period . I hope yours works well for years to come.
great work man
Nice idea man!
I've been working on a craftsman ltx1000 and the link had balljoints that came apart and were not replaceable so I cut the old shaft welded some bolts to the ends so now I can install replaceable balljoints.
Thank you redsaw 90 best of luck on your project.
Thank you to those who have commented so far. It has been a while since I was messing with this project. I am hoping to get back to it soon.
