  • Blake's emotions are all over the place during this 35 plus mile bike and hike extravaganza in Escalante National Monument Utah. On top of that Blake takes an unintentional swim, fully clothed, in some very cold water.

    Hey,
    You should try to monetize your videos. Y'all deserve to be compensated for providing us with such great videos! Thanks for uploading another one, and I look forward to your next adventure!

    “There’s always cool things to see, even if you think you’ve seen everything.“
    I love that! I noticed you put the same audio in your channel trailer too - it’s perfect! I always feel that when I get out and explore nature. If nothing else came from the video or even the trip, that’s a gem right there.

    Love Death Hollow. I did the full death hollow, which was a four day trip for us, the upper section was very challenging. Lower Death Hollow is quite beautiful. Your channel is great. Thanks! We did it in the spring and the upper section had massive water and we were quite happy for the full wetsuits we had....still a little chilly as I recall. Exiting Escalante river canyon was a tricky business too, especially with those multi-day packs.

    That's no slouch ride! I drove that section last April when we were on our tour of the Mighty Five. Thank you for reminding me how beautiful your part of the country is. Next trip to Utah I hope to make Escalante my home base for some awesome hiking.

    Danny, I really enjoyed the video. I watched you guys back on the day on 100 Miles to Nowhere, and News AF is my jam. I also used to live in Provo (I don't know if you're very into climbing, but I did the first ascent of the sport route up the face of Squaw Peak) and am similarly enamored with crazy outdoor adventures, though I'm not quite as hardcore as you. Also, I hate running. Anyway, keep up the awesome videos and adventures.

    And yes, GPS devices don’t work well in canyons, because there are too many signal reflections on the canyon walls, that hinder location calculations. 👍

    I love your whole bike shuttle mentality. As a mostly solo hiker I've been thinking about doing this to extricate myself from the many badass shuttle hikes in southern UT.

    Always a good time seeing your adventures. Tell Blake he needs a dry bag. You can also pick up a used dr650 dual sport motorcycle for about $1000. You could buy close to 10 for the average price of today’s bicycles.

    How to have a bad time in Death Hollow:
    1. Go when it is freaking cold, when the swimming holes are uninviting and nothing but grasses have emerged from dormancy. Especially avoid wildflowers and new or autumn leaves.
    2. Don't linger, except to fly a drone or stage a GoPro sequence. Traverse the lower Hollow as quickly as possible; in a fraction of a day is best. Sunrises and sunsets are undramatic anyway. Nothing to see here, move along.
    3. If you encounter water obstacles, don't protect your electronics. If they are ruined, it's the water's fault.
    4. Don't research your exit plan, just trust GPS coordinates for your vehicle to get you out.
    Considering all that, I think you maintained pretty good attitudes! Even the hardiest of us wants a burrito, bath, and bed now and then. And even at your ages I wouldn't have been able to travel so far under my own steam in a single day.
    BTW when you reach the Escalante rim you should bear right (SW) over a slight rise and descend a broad slickrock bowl to cross the "Micro Death Hollow" stream course and then scramble up the slickrock escarpment to the truck. I've done it many times, including in the dark. But then, you see, I LIKE Death Hollow. ;-> (just ribbin' you.)

    I've been trying to put my finger on what's so funny about selfie moments like 8:50. I think it's this image of some guy who's just putting an overly wholesome and ridiculously upbeat yet broken spin on endless suffering. A bit of a Buddy the Elf on a sucky day. Yeah.

    • @MediocreAmateur
      @MediocreAmateur  Před 5 lety +2

      I like Darn Tough socks and Smartwool socks seem to be a hit with some of the others. My favorite trail running shoe is the HOKA Speedgoat 2.0 but they are strictly trail only. My favorite scramble shoe is the La Sportiva Mutant and Bushido. I really like the Salomon Sense Ride for running and off trail mixed days but the shoe tends to wear out quickly.

    Which drone do you use and how do you carry it in your pack while running and make sure it doesn't get damaged?

    • @MediocreAmateur
      @MediocreAmateur  Před 5 lety

      I now use the Mavic Pro 2. I always put it in a gallon freezer zip lock bag and try to protect it with what I carry in my pack. I wrap my jackets and beanies around it but I always assume it's going to be destroyed by the end of the day.

      Not could, SHOULD! There are some great camping alcoves if you are lucky enough to arrive at one early enough. And, weather permitting, do not use a tent. Sleeping alfresco in Death Hollow is rare pleasure! And if you happen to be a fisherman, the trout are abundant.
