  • Banggood sent me the OWON SDS1202 Digital Oscilloscope for evaluation.
After spending some time with it, I think it will be a good replacement for my old Tektronics 'scope.
Bigger brighter screen, more functions, quiet fanless operation, and much smaller footprint on my work bench - all good things!

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.

I have a similar 4ch scope of a different brand, but still Chinese manufacturer, and the listing for mine had all possible options listed, including internal battery. Unfortunately, the seller had used the OEM options advertisement instead of the model number features, in the end most of the features were included but not the battery option. When it comes down to it, what I end up with is functional and even has serial signal decoding. A name brand model would have cost many thousands of $$$ for similar features.

I've had the DOS1102 110 MHz clone of this one for a couple years now. I'm quite pleased with it, even though the interface can be confusing sometimes. And mine still has the protective film ;-)

my first scope was a hantek that i had to take apart to get at the red plastic tab. i should've kept that one. i've been upgrading bench gear ever since and not using the features of the new ones. the new siglent and rigol 12 bit scopes are very hackable i read. they're on sale now too on ali.

@Shmbler I just got an DOS1102 and it's better than I expected. As Pile of Stuff said, it's very compact with lots of features. Someday I want a scope that decodes serial busses but I can live without that for now.

The "old one", in spite of dim screen is a great scope.
You should not have any trouble selling it on eBay!

      Yes it is.
Not being able to see the trace properly is the only real drawback.
Though I am liking having the ability to trigger and freeze transient events that comes with a digital scope - even one as cheap as this.

Does it live up to the 200MHz it claims? This could be a cost effective instrument for HF amateur radio projects, up to 6m at least, perhaps even 2m...

Unfortunately, I don't have a trustworthy signal that high to test it agasint.

I have seen this scope before a few times, and there is a 100MHz version sds1102 that is about half the price. I was thinking about trying one, but I will likely go for the 100mhz model as I don't see my use case needing 200mhz.

I just picked up a Hanmatek DOS1102 110 Mhz. It looks exactly like this one except it is USB powered through a barrel jack. So far, so good. It was listed as used on eBay but looked brand new. Well worth the $125 US.

@@ohmbug10 I think a lot of these come from the same factory in China and just get different brands depending on what price they want to charge :)

Poor WINE, maybe USB communication is outside it running a program. Hopefully updated apps will fix it.

The physical (controls/labelling) and graphical interfaces feel very cheap/unpolished to me, making it look like more of a "toy" than it probably is. It definitely is a step above the FNIRSI's out there, but well below a decent Rigol/Siglent for the home hobbyist. It will never be a Tek or Keysight but isn't intending to be either.
