This is my list of 6 things that directly contribute to a hollowbody archtop guitar feeding back and how to stop feedback. Not everything on the list is something that can be changed if you already own an arch top, but they are all certainly things you should be aware of and might help explain why you're having this issue.

cotton: instead of cotton balls, I've heard of people stuffing cotton T-shirts into the cavity.
painters tape: there are three verities: blue, green, and yellow. The yellow line is the "delicate" version and has the least adhesion/residue. Personally, I wouldn't use tape, but if that's the route you want to go, yellow painters tape might be the best option.
Thank you for adding that, definitely go with yellow in that case 🙏🏼
I've used a small piece of foam beneath the guitar's bridge, also helps a lot. Great vid!
Smart! Is that literally in between the feet of the bridge and the top? Or just wedged in an opening at the bottom of the bridge?
Im not here to pick fights, especially not as a jazz guitarist myself. I am an amateur builder though, and I really think some of these points need a disclaimer. Jazz is far more delicate than most music for sure. However things like a finishes effect on feedback is definitely real, and almost negligible. A finish is something you’re gonna care about in a 2000+ guitar. Things like wear, cost, and look are far more important when it comes to finding the guitar for you. Pickup weight/attachment is also going to be extremely minute when it comes to feedback. Pickup choice itself determines the majority of your sound, so get whatever sounds best for sure. Your other tips are great and can solve any problem a hollow guitar presents. Get the guitar you want regardless of finish or anything else. If it was that bad, you’d have gotten rid of that Eastman by now.
I’ve believe I’ve heard that a phase inverter can help as well. A noise gate is also a last resort too.
If you're playing amplified, such that the audience can't hear any of the acoustic sound from the guitar, is there any point in a hollow-body guitar? Why not just put the same pickup and strings on a solid-body?
They’re just totally different instruments. The most tangible difference is the envelope of each note - a hollow archtop can have a soft attack and still get a pretty quick decay. An electric played softly like that will seem like it sustains forever.
@@AlexPriceMusician Thanks for that, Alex. This is the first time I've seen anyone describe the difference in concrete, measurable terms. It's usually some subjective, cork-sniffing nonsense, so I really appreciate your words. Very helpful.
