What's even more sad that earlier footages of the game actually look interesting. It's like they kept going up the cliff until they fell down. Biggest waste of time in gaming history, they should have just released it in 2004-2007.
It wasn't developed for nearly that long, it's been rebuilt from scratch too many times
Doom 2016 proved to me I shouldn’t give this game a pass because it went through development hell.
The thing is, it didn't really go through development hell, so to speak. The developers, 3D Realms, had all the time and resources they needed. They just fucked about for years and years, constantly restarting and getting little done, mainly because of George Broussard. And then Randy stuck a bandaid on it and shat it out. It's just a very sad story and one of the worst cases of feature-creep ever.

One point to add: the thing that made Duke Nukem's minigames fun and interesting was that, aside from the fact they didn't stop the gameplay and the pacing dead, was because they were _optional._
Duke Nukem 3D was awesome because it had a solid base game with a layer of personality on top.
Duke Nukem Forever was derelict because it had a weak base game with an overload of "personality" that turned the whole experience into one big sight gag.

Doom 3 from 2004 looks way better than this game. Hell, Doom 3's dynamic lighting system still impresses me to this day.
Not only that, but Doom 3 is a far superior FPS gameplay wise. The enemies feel intimidating, but your guns feel like the perfect tools for the job.
In DNF, the fights just aren't fun. That's a death sentence in any shooter.

in the old days Duke Nukem 3D throws the player straight into action, gives you the weapons without waiting, and also secret areas to explore.

Oh they did, by adding a Mary Sue called Ava that tried to be Tiny Tina so hard that the "writers" failed to understand why Tina worked so well in Borderlands 2. By shifting all attention to this Lisa Simpson of a character in the main story, the B2 player cast got screwed over by being shelved to cameos, DLC or in Maya's case, used as a glorified plot device that ends with her death in a similarly insulting way to how Blizzard killed off Deckard Cain in Diablo 3 so she was basically used as a sacrifice in a cheap attempt of character "development" for Ava. The worst part, even with her being an unlikable character who does nothing significant within the story and gets Maya killed off due to her archetypal stupidity of being a rebellious teen, Ava still gets rewarded for all this because even the B3 player cast got screwed over by making their presence in the main story non-existent and she gets full command of the Crimson Raiders even when you, the player, did all the work; Roland is rolling in his grave at the sight of all his efforts gone to waste. Way to ruin a franchise, Gearbox. This is what happens when you remove Anthony Burch as the lead writer.

Meh, I didn't think it was THAT bad. I expected Duke, I got Duke. I just wish the game was like the badass trailers we got in the 90s and early 2000s. I also wish the levels were as open ended as the other Duke games, like Duke 3D.
At least DNF isn't **the** worst. I traded it in at gamestop and got Brink in exchange. The clerk said "I know you think that's gonna be a hell of a deal but you're making a mistake", I thanked him for his advice and decided to see for myself.
Brink made DNF feel like it was a fucking 10/10 masterpiece! I have _never_ been so damn disappointed in my life.

I really don't see how anyone could positively review this game. I've seen YT reviews of DNF, singing this game's praises basically for being the "anti-Call of Duty" and that it's a full-blown action-fest and all that nonsense. The funny thing is that Duke Nukem Forever barely has any shooting throughout the first act, and majority of it consists of platforming and valve puzzles.
I think the people who praise this game is likely a bunch of people who hate shooters in general simply because a game like Call of Duty is popular and they never seem to broaden their horizons.
I love shooters in general and still enjoyed DNF.
I didn't. Everything just feels dated, the first act drags for way too long with very little shooting, the guns are weak as shit, the "puzzles" are nothing but bullshit, it has an inconsistent tone (especially regarding the Hive level near the end of the game), and jokes that don't land at all.
If I wanted to play a throwback FPS, I'd play Doom 2016 or Dusk. If I wanted to play a comedic FPS, I'd play Shadow Warrior. Hell, Eat Lead: Return of Matt Hazard was a better Duke Nukem game than this.
No kidding. I saw TheRetroReplay's review of the game and all he did was bash other mainstream FPS games to prove his point.
And don't get me started on AlphaOmegaSin and The Rageholic. While I admire their work giving Konami and SJWs the finger, their praise of DNF just feels heavily biased to me. I'm not trying to bash these people for enjoying DNF, I just find it hypocritical that people who like this game bash a game like CoD for heavily scripted sequences, regenerating health, two-weapon limit, and pretty much the same stuff implemented in DNF. When really, DNF is pretty much a CoD clone with juvenile humor and dated references.

I'm weird. I paid $15 for a new copy. I loved the game enough to get every achievement, including dlc. Yeah I actually bought and 100%ed the dlc. I felt that the game was different compared to a lot of generic games on the market. This game is tough as nails on the hardest difficulty. Unfair is an understatement lmao, but it felt good to get the achievement.

There's several choices now for people who want to see a competently made Duke Nukem game. You can play Ion Fury (which was made on a modified version of the Build engine), the updated re-release of Bulletstorm has an extra mode where you can play as Duke which some fans like, & there's also the leaked 2001 build of the Duke Nukem forever game for PC gamers to pore over. It's still incomplete, but some modders want to get it working. Some people have been genuinely impressed with what 3DRealms managed to accomplish on the older Unreal Engine software it runs on!

Honestly I liked 2004 game designs, Bloodlines howerer used it good. Also the game was just dropping you into gameplay after cutscene and optional training with Jack. And off you go exploring city. This here is just ... no. It is a supposed sequel to action packed fast gameplay, but it wants to behave like ... narrative driven ? I mean it uses kinda what Bloodlines would do - and Bloodlines was RPG, it had every right to take time and dazzle you with story and atmosphere, rather then action.
Duke Nukem Forever acts as if the game itself stopped believing that the core material and the core action packed gameplay is just ... outdated and not fun. Ironically what someone in comments said how Forever plot and approach should be - 'outdated and irrelevant' this game follows but towards it's own past, genre and action focus.
DNF had two kind of fun levels.
The starting casino had some neat moments here and there.
The Duke Burger where pretty much half the level was the kitchen that you had been shrunk down for. I want more big world maps in games, that was actually kind of fun.

Whats pathetic is gear box bashes halo while using everything that halo does except in a thrown together sloppy way. Dukes got regenerating health and a 2 weapon limit. Halos world is a sandbox designed around picking up/dropping/keeping different weapons for different encounters. The ai is so good that the exact same level can play out different every time when it comes to encounters. The weapon limit makes 0 sense on Duke forever.

I can't comment on the gameplay fully since I've never played it but just watching it... the tone of this game is all wrong. Everyone fawning over Duke like he's the second coming of Christ is just irritating as hell and makes you want to join the aliens in slaughtering humanity.
The game's story arch should have been everyone telling Duke he was irrelevant, a misogynistic old relic from a bygone era before regenerating health and knee-high cover, and Duke having to prove that his style of circle-starfing, non linear, over-the-top action was still viable.
And seriously, the 'Holsom Twins'? Like why did this game launch with an Olsen Twins parody in TYOOL 2011? What's with the weird incest gag?

Grizzled Modern Warfare Marines with health that regenerates while they're in cover, cybernetic space marines that can dual wield anything, a group of four plucky zombie apocalypse survivors who can revive each other and respawn in hero closets when they die... and then the aliens from Duke 3D show up again and those guys can't hack it, so Duke has to save the world again and prove he's still got it. Or if you were modernizing it for today, throw in some Battle Royale and Hero Shooter pastiches.
I dunno maybe I'm wrong but I think it would make for better comedy than awful references to the Olsen Twins and Leeroy Jenkins.

There's a game that's even worse than Duke Nukem Forever, that game of course is Duke Nukem Critical Mass for the Nintendo DS. Interestingly, Duke Nukem Critical Mass came out the same year as Duke Nukem Forever.

This games a masterpiece compared to the abundance of dogshit buggy games we get today. Playing through this and prey was a breath of fresh air. The bad thing about this game is the shooting doesn't pack any punch. It's fine but I never really liked gearbox's shooting. Duke 3d all the weapons felt amazing. The only weapon they really got right was the shotgun. The hate this game gets makes my eyes roll and is just so predictable for youtubers. This a bad duke nukem game yes but it's not a horrible game it's just a simple mediocre shooter with puzzles.

Most people defend this trash release for "muh interactivity" yeah because when I want to play a shooter I want to play pinball (or other crappy minigames whose production time and budget could have been used to improve the game!) and ram into walls and props to see if I can interact with them! (Sarcasm btw) Screw this game, insult to Duke Nukem and a disgrace to the shooter genre. Sucked in 2011, sucks even more now. The shooting isn't even good. Go play Duke AMC instead.

There is a fan made mod of DNF to make it look more authentic to the older version we wanted.... it is vastly superior to what we actually got.
I mean, the game did have it's shortcomings, like only being able to carry 2 weapons. But, it was a decent game.
This game suffers from resident evil 6 syndrome. Where it has good ideas, but it executes them very poorly.

It took forever to make, and it should have been 10 times better, but the game is still fun and replayable, at least in my opinion

Fun Fact: This game came out the same month of it's release as Alice: Madness returns, and that game has better graphics, presentation, and gameplay than this. Plus, I also heard the DS version of Duke Nukem of the same year, just months earlier than this, and it was also destroyed by critics for it's crappy graphics and boring ass gameplay. 2011 certainly wasn't a good year for Duke Nukem, and this game definitely help killed the franchise. Will you play the DS version of Duke Nukem in the future?
