The New Gezi Park Protesters: Istanbul's Gentrification Wars

This weekend’s presidential election in Turkey is as good as decided. The mass protests surrounding Gezi Park, the corruption scandals, the Soma mining accident - none of these incidents will stop the majority of Turks from electing Recep Tayyip Erdogan as president. Among other things, this means that ambitious development projects will likely multiply - and with them, the controversies Erdogan’s AKP party aggressive policies routinely provoke.
The Gezi uprising that rocked Turkey in June 2013 was sparked by a government project to transform the park in central Istanbul into a gigantic mall. And while a relentless police crackdown has led many of last year’s protesters to abandon hope, the problems at the heart of Erdogan’s vision for Turkey's urban development have not gone away. Those directly affected by the aggressive development of their neighborhoods are often left with only one of two options: to despair, or to fight.
One group that has decided to take the fight to the government is the Revolutionary People's Liberation Front, or DKHP/C. This extreme-left party, labeled a terrorist organization by the EU, is entrenched in many of the disenfranchised neighborhoods that have become targets for ruthless urban development. To stave off the forced relocation of inhabitants, the DKHP/C militants are prepared to combat not only the police, but also violent drug gangs that terrorize their neighborhoods, which they believe are collaborating with the state.
VICE News travelled to Istanbul to meet the DKHP/C on its home turf, document its fierce clashes with the police on May Day, and understand what motivates these violent, self-proclaimed champions of the poor.

Vice News, the name for the documentary is horribly wrong. I study politics in Ankara and I have to say that Gezi protesters had no organisational background. They were generally from middle and upper middle classes came together via social media. They had no ideological thoughts. They still describe their movement as "supra political and ideological" They defend the right of life (of both humans and nature) and the rights of the lgbt. Gezi protesters' "style" was passive resistance.
While Dhkp-c is saying "destroy!" and they are armed. Dhkc (Devrimci Halkın Kurtuluş Cephesi - Salvation Front of the Revolutionist People) is founded by a radical leftist militant. It's a terrorist organisation. They're generally Alevi Turks ethnically and as you can see they're the poor of Istanbul. And they're active since 1994. No connection between Gezi protesters and Dhkc except Dhkc "supported" Gezi protests. Support does not mean they shared the same thoughts and style.

Regardless if the majority of viewers on this channel are of religious faith or not, it wouldn't kill them if they did all they could to lobby international organizations to provide relief efforts for the men, women and children who are being displaced and slaughtered each day by Isis because of their personal worldview.
No matter how big or small it may be, every dollar and mentioning of this crisis helps out the cause, for the thousands of families affected and towards bringing those merciless criminals to justice.

As a Turk, I'm very much in favor of local struggles against the centralized state (including the armed self-defence, regardless of the ideology, though I'm not a communist myself), also as a resident in Istanbul, I think the gentrification is the most cunning, the most irrevertable and the most destructive invasion the city has ever faced since proto-historic times, but what I find disturbing about this organization is that they are hardcore moralists. They do not only exalt familial values so passionately, they have also been known to drag prostitutes over and over along the streets, "exposing" them because they don't want prostitutes in "their neighbourhood." The same logic as drugs: fornication makes people "less disciplined."
Another thing is that they are also very aggressive against other leftist groups, the sectarian approach has caused many bloody conflicts, the last incident was against the secular Kurdish & LGBT joint, which wasn't allowed into the neighbourhood to speak about the presidential elections. This too, apparently, will make people less disciplined and cause them to vote for the system, which is a deadly sin according to the organization.

Communism isn't about everyone receiving the same income. It's about changing the social foundations of life. You talk about human nature, but the only thing that seprates us from animals is that we have a revolutionary relationship to nature whereby we CHANGE our very environment (instead of adapting to it) and thus change our nature in the process. Communism is about the COMMONS, owning things like the FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE, factories, farms in COMMON whether that be mediated by a central authority or something else. The problem with Communism in the 20th century is that these were overwhelmingly agrarian and neo-feudal societies. All Communists including Marx knew that Communism could not survive if it did not occur in the developed, advanced countries like Germany. Communism embodies the interests of the industrial proletariat. The industrial proletariat compromised a demographic minority in all the Communist countries (except East Germany, which by the way had the best living standards). If most of your country is composed of peasants, its hard to rule over them with an ideology that does not embody their interests. They were just turned into proletarians and now we're back at square one. Communism will return again.

As was said implied by one of the locals interviewed (I think he was a local), not everything can be solved by guns, including this dilemma and as was said by another person in the comment section, the last thing Turkey needs is a revolution, let alone a Communist one.

I think evry armed revolution is a bad revolution, in the case of turkey I think they just exaggerate, the drug ploblem is a verry big problem which we can compare with some afro-amerikan neigbourhoods in the US, I still think education could be a way out which can solve a lot of the problems. in the beginning of the video there was also a man who blow him self up, he is a hero, But I think his act is undomocratic, he is not a hero but a murderer. the other people on the wall ( pictures) were burn in the hotel in sivas, they are heros, but this doesn't give the right to kill innocent people.
