The New Gezi Park Protesters: Istanbul's Gentrification Wars

This weekend’s presidential election in Turkey is as good as decided. The mass protests surrounding Gezi Park, the corruption scandals, the Soma mining accident - none of these incidents will stop the majority of Turks from electing Recep Tayyip Erdogan as president. Among other things, this means that ambitious development projects will likely multiply - and with them, the controversies Erdogan’s AKP party aggressive policies routinely provoke.
The Gezi uprising that rocked Turkey in June 2013 was sparked by a government project to transform the park in central Istanbul into a gigantic mall. And while a relentless police crackdown has led many of last year’s protesters to abandon hope, the problems at the heart of Erdogan’s vision for Turkey's urban development have not gone away. Those directly affected by the aggressive development of their neighborhoods are often left with only one of two options: to despair, or to fight.
One group that has decided to take the fight to the government is the Revolutionary People's Liberation Front, or DKHP/C. This extreme-left party, labeled a terrorist organization by the EU, is entrenched in many of the disenfranchised neighborhoods that have become targets for ruthless urban development. To stave off the forced relocation of inhabitants, the DKHP/C militants are prepared to combat not only the police, but also violent drug gangs that terrorize their neighborhoods, which they believe are collaborating with the state.
VICE News travelled to Istanbul to meet the DKHP/C on its home turf, document its fierce clashes with the police on May Day, and understand what motivates these violent, self-proclaimed champions of the poor.

Ten years later, can anyone update on the situation of Okmaydani? How is it today? I'm going to guess that unfortunately the revolutionaries have lost ground and the neighborhood was gentrified, but it would be interesting to hear from locals or people connected to the ground there
there is no protest or terrorist organisations now but same people living in those neighboorhood

Vice News, the name for the documentary is horribly wrong. I study politics in Ankara and I have to say that Gezi protesters had no organisational background. They were generally from middle and upper middle classes came together via social media. They had no ideological thoughts. They still describe their movement as "supra political and ideological" They defend the right of life (of both humans and nature) and the rights of the lgbt. Gezi protesters' "style" was passive resistance.
While Dhkp-c is saying "destroy!" and they are armed. Dhkc (Devrimci Halkın Kurtuluş Cephesi - Salvation Front of the Revolutionist People) is founded by a radical leftist militant. It's a terrorist organisation. They're generally Alevi Turks ethnically and as you can see they're the poor of Istanbul. And they're active since 1994. No connection between Gezi protesters and Dhkc except Dhkc "supported" Gezi protests. Support does not mean they shared the same thoughts and style.
I love Turkish people.

Oli Price Bates But it wouldn't hurt if the subscribers of Vice kept the people fleeing from Isis in their thoughts as the situation in Syria-Iraq progresses. Regardless if the majority of viewers on this channel are of religious faith or not, it wouldn't kill them if they did all they could to lobby international organizations to provide relief efforts for the men, women and children who are being displaced and slaughtered each day by Isis because of their personal worldview.
No matter how big or small it may be, every dollar and mentioning of this crisis helps out the cause, for the thousands of families affected and towards bringing those merciless criminals to justice.
And as Videnlona put it,
Take care and God bless!
one of the interviewees say "katil devlet", which means "the murderer state", he refers to the turkish state but vice prefers not to translate that. why???
Because he is a fucking liar, this dumbas probably can't even see straight and he is praising a suicide bomber a litteral terrorist, also there is no way that suicide bomber kiled 9 police officers, even suicide bombings in most crowded areas do not have 9 casualities. This dumbasses in the video are larping and playing commies while they are just a handful of dumbasses with dangerous weapons.
first they are saying ""we are peacefull"
After that they are saying "Collect all your guns to fight against them"
And after that they are crying because two of them are died?
Look if you go to a fight with guns and one of your men will die then you must not give the fault to your enemy because they also dont want to die;)

I don't understand the point of hunger strikes.
It brings attention.
As a historicly hunger strike tradition came from IRA, read Bobby Sands and he's comrade's. Hunger strike methods use in jail generally. if you dont have any option to struggle against State, your body became resistance area. in 1991 nearly 13 people died in hunger strike whic is struggle against cell type jail ((F type)
TrankoBuskas in 1996 13 people , and between 2000-2007 122 people dead because of the hunger strike.
Because normal in prison they are always all togher. That time they did the same like in Europe by putting 2 man at single cel or 1 man in 1 cel. That is the reason. They wanted Stay together.

The lots of the muslim world is pretty much in chaos. Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Thats a huge chunk. Its very sad, many things/people at fault.
DHKP-C have at most 1000 people while Turkey has 76 mil. people. Turkey isn't in chaos, 2-3 months ago it was a bad time because in Soma,300 mine workers died and everybody was angry.Still angry crowd managed to protest peacefully. I would definetly not say Turkey is in chaos,YET!
Remzi, who is the person in your profile picture?
Masashi Kishimoto Obviously he's a commie ..... but at least he isn't retarded enough to support groups like these. Or at least that's what I hope .. I already fucking despise commies.. but not all of them are unreasonable maniacs stuck in the 70's hoping for a bloody violent revolution and supporting terror. But unfortunately .. in Turkey .. the left is 99% ultra radical left. That said .. most of them are just ignorant retards thinking the left is cool. They are unreasonable idiots but they aren't supporters of such violence ..
Che was a son of a whore mass murderer..
3choBlast3r- The real problem of humanity is the ultra right wingers, that devolve the human species. There will be wars, exploitation and suffering as long as their are right wing mentality people of ignorance and narrow mindedness.
Turkey is not in chaos.
weird. after long time some fighting for something without shouting ''allaakbar''
They're communists, most of them are atheists and the ones that are Muslim probably don't practice it. Just because some of them look Semetic (I'd say they look more "European" than Greeks do) doesn't mean you have to label them as Muslims. Cure your ignorance friend (:
BlackDeath12345 99% of your brain isn't functioning properly.
it's not true. Because DHKP-C doesn't shouting allah-u ekber. They are marxist groups.
I am quite sure, that none of those fighting in eastern ukraine is shouting "allahu akbar", at least not to my knowledge.
***** You're wrong. The reason you will see figures saying 99% of Turkey are muslim is because you're automatically registered as a muslim when you are born in Turkey.
So suprised there was a random german guy in there

What do people see in Communism seriously like i obviously know it means everyone will be equal on all basis of life but i dont want to live in a country where the government tell me when to eat what to eat when to sleep when to wake up or not let me Outside the country look at norh korea
north korea is not communist it labels itself as communist but its just a fascist dictatorship and you I think youre mixing up communism with state socialism
***** Communism is a bunch of pretty words mashed together to make you fall in love with the idea of a perfect society. Then you take these words, you roll em and smoke em, and live your life on this alternate reality where you always end up winning somehow, and the enemy always loses but never goes away.
Your leaders are happy as long as you are hallucinating on this drug they call communism. Even if you are hungry, even if your stomach is growling, your back is hurting and your head is spinning, you must smile, applaud and yell slogans.
If you want to complain, you will go to jail, you will be discriminated and you will be a target.
collin ohlinger then tell me why did communist / anarchist communities exist like the free territory or parts of spain in the spanish civil war ?
***** delussion.
But capitalism tells you what to eat, when to sleep etc! Look, I'm actually with you, I'm not a communist since it is an authoritarian socialist ideology. But what about anarcho-syndicalism? Or other libertarian socialist ideologies?
I did not understand why you asked these questions to terorists. You are not giving the full picture and you are just showing this from only terrorists' perspective. This is not acceptable, what happened in Gezi Parki has nothing to do with these extremists.

DHKPC İS NOT GEZİ PARKI, GEZİ PARKI IS PEOPLE.
As a Turk, I'm very much in favor of local struggles against the centralized state (including the armed self-defence, regardless of the ideology, though I'm not a communist myself), also as a resident in Istanbul, I think the gentrification is the most cunning, the most irrevertable and the most destructive invasion the city has ever faced since proto-historic times, but what I find disturbing about this organization is that they are hardcore moralists. They do not only exalt familial values so passionately, they have also been known to drag prostitutes over and over along the streets, "exposing" them because they don't want prostitutes in "their neighbourhood." The same logic as drugs: fornication makes people "less disciplined."
Another thing is that they are also very aggressive against other leftist groups, the sectarian approach has caused many bloody conflicts, the last incident was against the secular Kurdish & LGBT joint, which wasn't allowed into the neighbourhood to speak about the presidential elections. This too, apparently, will make people less disciplined and cause them to vote for the system, which is a deadly sin according to the organization.

Communism isn't about everyone receiving the same income. It's about changing the social foundations of life. You talk about human nature, but the only thing that seprates us from animals is that we have a revolutionary relationship to nature whereby we CHANGE our very environment (instead of adapting to it) and thus change our nature in the process. Communism is about the COMMONS, owning things like the FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE, factories, farms in COMMON whether that be mediated by a central authority or something else. The problem with Communism in the 20th century is that these were overwhelmingly agrarian and neo-feudal societies. All Communists including Marx knew that Communism could not survive if it did not occur in the developed, advanced countries like Germany. Communism embodies the interests of the industrial proletariat. The industrial proletariat compromised a demographic minority in all the Communist countries (except East Germany, which by the way had the best living standards). If most of your country is composed of peasants, its hard to rule over them with an ideology that does not embody their interests. They were just turned into proletarians and now we're back at square one. Communism will return again.

I think evry armed revolution is a bad revolution, in the case of turkey I think they just exaggerate, the drug ploblem is a verry big problem which we can compare with some afro-amerikan neigbourhoods in the US, I still think education could be a way out which can solve a lot of the problems. in the beginning of the video there was also a man who blow him self up, he is a hero, But I think his act is undomocratic, he is not a hero but a murderer. the other people on the wall ( pictures) were burn in the hotel in sivas, they are heros, but this doesn't give the right to kill innocent people.
