  • Wrestlers Speak on Abdullah The Butcher
Wrestling legends and WWE Hall of Famers discuss controversial "WWE Hall of Famer" Abdullah The Butcher aka Larry Shreve who was known for assaulting people for real in a performance sport when they're not expecting sometimes causing serious harm. He also continued to wrestle for years, usu sally in double blood matches despite being aware he was positive for Hepatitis C a serious blood disease that can be deadly if not treated. Abdullah was found guilty of Negligence, Assault and Battery in both Canada and the US after an unplanned in ring assault occurred with Shreve cutting another wrestler with a Hep C infected unsanitary razor blade.

That's for sure, but even more so, I wouldn't want him to cut me. And then even more than that, I wouldn't want him to cut himself, then cut me with the same tool, and then bleed all over me too. And the piece of garbage knew he had Hep-C and still did this stuff! How many people did he give it to? Geez, this guy is such a piece of trash. And he's been allowed to get away with it most of the time. He's so used to doing it and getting away with it, he just cuts people for the heck of it sometimes too with his little razors like it's some kind of joke.

Everyone was throwing stuff at Abdullah and a girl next to me gave me change and said throw it at him. We were only a few rows from the stage. Being young and stupid I whipped a dime at him and hit him right below the eye. He looked right at me and to say I was scared as hell would be an understatement.
Things got so quickly out of hand Abdullah and another wrestler kendo Nagasaki got into real fights with people in the audience and the police cane in and shut everything down.

Honestly think if Abby came around more recently he'd have just been another guy who had a cup of coffee with ECW if he came around early enough (later ECW shied away from too many pure blood-and-guts guys, only sticking to those that had enough tenure like Sabu, New Jack and Sandman who'd been there years), like Ian Rotten or something, worked guys like Supreme in XPW, early CZW with Zandig, Lobo and Wifebeater and then got stuck in the cycle of IWA:MS King of the Deathmatch tournaments.
In those days, though, there were few true blood-and-guts guys (sure there'd be blood feuds between wrestlers especially in the 70s, but the pure uncontrolled blood-and-guts like Abby and Sheik were few and far between) and cos you could move territory to territory, you could stay over without it growing stale, especially when Abby would take long tours of Japan or Puerto Rico so he would crop up from time to time in your town and scare the bejeesus out of everybody. In today's environment it ceases to be an attraction, and just starts to be a 60-something year old man (he stopped wrestling around 70 iirc) bleeding for money, and just becomes sad and, with Hep C, dangerous.
Say what you will about New Jack, but with the exception of the William Lane incident, if you work with him, he'll work with you. Kulas, Grimes and Gypsy Joe were all examples of people either not cooperating with, or pulling shit on, New Jack.

I watched this video and woke up thinking about it so, I just had to add something. My dad was a part time WCW employee from the late 80's to the mid 90's, every weekend was kind of like "bring your kid to work day" so I grew up hanging out behind the scenes of the greatest promotion in history (my thoughts at the time).
Being a kid behind the curtain of WCW was Christmas morning every day. Here was all of these larger than life, super hero types and the majority were great people that loved entertaining. Ron Simmons was "my" guy. In his booming voice "Hey Thunderbolt! Get over here and get a load of this shit!" was his go to way of calling my attention to something he thought I'd be amused by. He was awesome. He was genuine, he was Ronnie.
I never met Abby, I saw him many, many, many times but never approached him. I wasn't tentative about approaching him because of his mad man character, I knew the difference between a character and the guy that played him. Again, I knew a lot of the boys The thing was, I felt no difference at all between the character Abdullah The Butcher and the man that played him, was one in the same. I had a sixth sense about him sure like most kids have that "twinkle" but he just seemed off in an obvious way; no extra sense required.
I was in the locker room in I think Savannah Ga. with just Abby and one of the boys who I won't mention. He's a HOFer now but he's not in this video so I won't speak for him. The other one, laced his boots up, stood up to go to gorilla, he got to the door, turned around and said "Hey ******, your dad said to meet him out there for the last one on the card, I'm it. So come with me." I was confused, I always met dad back in the locker room after a show but I went anyway.
I go out the door, following the other guy. We step down the hall about ten feet and he turns to me and says "Your dad never told me that, I'm sorry I lied to you but you shouldn't be alone in there with him." and that was all.
Going back home, I asked my dad about Abby. He said "That was the right choice. You know how the guys back stage are different than the guys on the TV? With Butcher there is no difference."

The ONLY great thing I can say about him was I like his positive view on The Undertaker from an old interview.

Before it's all said & done that more wrestlers will come out about Abby with hep c. I grew up with old school wrestling in the early 80s watching Brody & Abby. I wonder if anyone is willing to come out if they contracted something from Abby. Thanks Hannibal for your great interviews.

So did Hanibal get rid of Hep C? I hope so.
Edit: I hadn't watch the entire video but just saw he is now cured. I hope you were able to recoup some of your losses Hannibal.

Respect to Jake the Snake for not trying to be politically correct and calling abdullah exactly what he is. May abdullah rot in hell.

I feel like this compilation is some real catharsis for Hannibal. It’s sad what happened. As a deathmatch fan I can say the match between Abby and Hannibal was great in terms of its brutality and whirlwind of energy. But it robbed Hannibal of a WWE career.

Abdollah the butcher is 79 years old And he was wrestling for decades before officially retiring in 2019 honestly he should have retired 30 years ago!

I had no idea about this connection, with Hannibal & Abdullah...
I’ve been an admirer and follower of the channel for awhile, and not sure how I missed this.
It definitely needs to be an episode on Dark Side of the Ring. Hannibal should be more prominent, get more attention in the industry, as he is really the last true example of a Frank Goodish, independent heel.

I seen a match at the Miami Beach Convention Center in the mid '70s with Dusty Rhodes and Abdullah The Butcher that was a blood bath. Dusty died in 2015 from a liver ailment which makes me think he infected Dusty. Looking at how Dusty aged so rapidly and died screams a Hep C infection.

That was actually nuts I actually saved the guy but he got cut up and blood all over his suit which was I guess a rented suit. I was in shock that he did that. It made the news around here the next day.

I look forward to 30 years from now when we get to interview wrestlers from today about psychopaths who mutilate referees.
