The cafe 'La Giralda' in Montevideo, Uruguay, occupies a
special place in Tango history. It was there in the year 1917
that a young Gerardo Matos Rodriguez gave (anonymously) the
music score of a tango, in 4/8, he had written to the orchestra of
Roberto Firpo to play for the first time.
Gerardo was then an adolescent (17 years old) who was barely
making it as a student in the faculty of Architecture in
Montevideo. Was it modesty? shyness? fear of ridicule? who
knows why he wanted to remain anonymous? Firpo only knew that
the name of the young composer was Gerardo. It was only later
that the full identity of the author was known. He was young,
educated, well mannered and sensible. He was also a bit naive.
He sold for 20 pesos his rights of authorship to the Breyer
publishing house. After some moderate success the composition
was forgotten.
Seven years later, in 1924, Gerardo was living in Paris and he
met Francisco Canaro who had just arrived with his orchestra.
That's when he found out that La Cumparsita was a major hit.
The tango lyricists Enrique Maroni and Pascual Contursi had
added words to the tango and renamed it 'Si Supieras'--If you
knew. All of Buenos Aires was hearing, dancing, and demanding
to buy the score for the tango that was seemingly everywhere
in shows, recordings, and broadcasts. Shortly after, La
Cumparsita arrived in Paris where, in the full grip of the
roaring 20's, people danced charlestons, shimmys, one-steps,
bostons, and when the crowd asked for a tango, they danced La
Cumparsita.
From Paris La Cumparsita spread to the four corners of the
world and has since and forever after become synonymous with
Tango.

I have been looking for the name of this song for the past 6 years. When I was 13, I bought this cheap $1 Halloween CD from the dollar section at Target. It was mostly, a shady man saying things like, "Beware this Halloween night, spooks will come get you", eerie sound effect such as: chains rattling, dogs barking, monsters, moaning, aliens talking, witches laughing, ect., some public domain songs (including this one). I was so fascinated by this song. I had people listen to it for me to see if they knew what it was, look online to see if anyone else bought the same CD & knew that song, so much. Finally I found it while watching a video of Dolly Parton guest staring on Captain Kangaroo. There was a part where he told Dolly that the Dancing Bear was in Spain & then the scene changed showing the bear dancing with a doll of some sort, & this song was playing. I saw that CZcams finally gave out the name to it at the part saying, "Would you like to buy "La Cumparsita" on iTunes or Amazon?" I was so excited. Now I have a name for this beautiful masterpiece.

GenieVillain26 holy crap - I had that same cd! I got it at target for a dollar and had it on a loop on Halloween when we’d leave a bowl of candy out for the trick or treaters. I wondered what this song was too and then I heard it in the movie some like it hot and learned it was a real song

I have a different story, I was barely a 6 years old child when I heard this beautiful music on the radio at night my dad tuned on for his listening pleasure. I was sleeping in a room next to the Living, the front portion of the house. I do love to listen to some Tango music & one day when I was on CZcams checking on other Tango music, suddenly I heard this. I was trying to find this piece of music for quite a while and finally I found it and so now I know the title of this piece of beautiful music together with the history behind it. It also has a different title now.
Whenever I hear this superb piece,I am just simply transported to HEAVEN.

I do not know the case in any other countries but this wonderful tango used to be the one the rhythm of which the newly wed-couples tried to dance with as the start of their wedding reception in Turkey,which is a country situated between Asia and Europe,(İstanbul or the old version,Constantinapol is the world famous city of my homecountry)'.Who knows how many couples must have been married with this tango!Whatever the case is now,It's the best tango of all times!

Rejoinder to the observation made by GenieVillain26, I am 64 years of old, living in India, i was fascinated by this song since I was 8 or 9 as I heard the same on my cousin's 33 rpm vinyl player, in my home town Alapuzha, Kerala, South West India. Was too small to understand it's title, but all these years could hum it to perfection, I never studied music, remained a connoisseur .I wanted to hear it again but never knew the title. My cousin is no more. Last week I saw an ice skating video forward on WhatsApp which mentioned it's name. Wow, years of searching, found it, never knew it was a Tango! Heard it repeatedly for several days. Never been hooked to such a piece of music . I also learned the history of the song, life of Gerardo Rodriguez, the original composer and his plight. LA CUMPARSITA was one of the composition most requested and played. This tango is wonderful to dance as it is seductive. I know I was very young...but I could dance a very good tango back then.

Escuchar el tango mas bello que alguna vez fue compuesto y mirar el Montevideo de antes, el pedacito de cielo en que naci..Ver el palacio Salvo en construccion, las playas Pocitos y Buceo, el Cerro, la Aduana, la avenida 18 de Julio, el boliche de la esquina, los tranvias y el trafico manejando por el lado izquierdo antes del cambio de mano un dia que recuerdo muy bien...
