  • After already amassing tens of millions of US users, TUBI hopes to make a success here in the UK! Launching its platform, how will it compete against the existing streaming services, and not to mention the established public service broadcasters?

Another group of people this type of service could work for is for older people because they don't have to remember a username and password. They would just need to remember to go to Tubi and watch the something on it that they fancy. Plus they actually seem to have things that older people would watch

A big misconception is Tubi is for older people, where the average viewer age is actually around late thirties-early forties. It caters to the much over looked market of "never adopters" who were at some point using TV for free and simply aren't interested in paying subscription after leaving conventional television. A group much larger and overlooked (and coveted by advertisers) than paid providers recognised, and on platform adoption is posing an actual threat to Disney.
It has ads but is completely upfront about it, and is respectful to the viewer when advertising (programs don't start with ads, advertising is brief, major advertisers as to spam/scams, ads seem to come on at appropriate moments in shows, app is stable).
The reality of Tubi is it is a wild west of content, picking up a massive trove of cheap disregarded programs that still have some sort of audience. There is no drawcards here, but cater heavily to the cult and bizarre. (Also hoards of garbage and canceled risqué content deemed unpurchaseable due to conventional streaming's mainstream sanitization). The result is a video store vibe, not just with the age and nature of much of the content (lots of b-grade, straight to video and HBO), but walls of curiosities. "Didn't have the movie we waned. Not to worry, this looks interesting."

Australia has had Tubi for a while…. There were two big problems that caused me to delete the service. Firstly, whilst the content is massive, most of it is trash. But the bigger problem is that it took up so much memory that it affected the performance of my Smart TV.

I think the only thing that will effect it is much like other services that offer free content that isn't from a public broadcaster is that much of the content is all similar or the exact same. If you compare it with things like Freevee and Plex a lot of the selection is very similar and that being stuff that the rights holders will let anyone have for the lowest price with a selection of more premium bigger budget stuff that is usually on for a limited time. Although something interesting I noticed on this early launch is many of the collections of movies they have like Twilight as example is missing the first movie so either the right in the UK are tied to another streaming platform exclusively or they just couldn't get it. So it will be interesting to see if they ever have the kind selection that the U.S. has.

@@freddiejohnson6137 I appreciate that but I am STILL not getting one unless a functional adult gets it for me and I pay them back. I'm too much of a [insert ableist slur of your choice here] to remember to do that. Channel 4 only has up to Season 6 it does NOT have Season 7. Maybe once they finish showing Dance Moms reruns.

I use a VPN to access Tubi in the US. As far as major broadcasters go, I'm an ITV guy.
