  • Squash and Stretch is the principle of applying a contrasting change of shape-from a squash pose to a stretch pose or vice versa-to give a feeling of fleshiness, flexibility, and life in animation. The absence of squash and stretch gives a rigidity or stiffness to the motion. The transition between a proper Squash pose to a Stretch pose, or the other way around, breaks the perfect solidity that CG animation in particular inherently gives to everything.

That’s what’s so interesting and cool about animation, and what makes it so difficult/skill-based. In order for animations to look/feel real, the movements need to be exaggerated and the structures flex in very unreal ways. Without those strange alterations, the animations would not look real, and instead would look very clunky and robotic.

I mean I personally think those smears are reapply clever and greatly applied for a 3D game/cutscene.
Using traditional methods like that in newer technologies like 3D animation to enhance the feeling of velocity and movement to bring more life into art us really cool and shows light level and attention to detail. It shows the dudes who made this were either being paid pretty damn good (knowing Activision Blizzard, likely not) or really happy to work on it.
