  • There’s nothing more frustrating than getting some fresh heads on a drum, tuning them up, achieving a great feel, and then realizing that the tone is horrendous. Maybe you’ve just encountered that “basketbally” tone for the first time. Maybe you’ve been struggling with it endlessly for years. Either way, you’ll probably be happy to know that we’ve got a VERY interesting hack for you and we’re demonstrating it today!

    This was a frustration of mine for about 10 years. I just chalked it up to maybe my shells sucked (at the beginning I was playing some poplar shells), but then I got the same thing from a pretty high end floor tom recently and decided to just search for a solution. Lo and behold, you guys have a video on it that came in clutch (as you have many times before!). I JUST did it, and the basketball ping is GONE! My goodness. YEARS of frustration, eradicated in a matter of minutes! You guys are a true blessing to the drum community! I know I've said it before, but THANK YOU!

    Love it!

  • @thomasmonson633
    @thomasmonson633 Před 4 lety +12

    After some investigating I'm pretty sure the basketball ping comes from sound bouncing around the inside of the shell. If you have a pingy drum, and you take one or both heads off the drum, stick your hand inside the shell and snap your fingers you can hear it. To me it sounds really similar to clapping your hands in an empty room with bare walls. So this fix makes perfect sense.

  • @stephencshapiro
    @stephencshapiro Před 4 lety +33

    I had this problem with a floor tom and it had nothing to do with tuning. In fact I took the top head off and when I hit the side of the drum I heard the ping. It was an acoustic issue.
    This hack also works if you just use double sided tape on the inside of the shell (no hanging like a curtain). It's basically like putting up auralex on the walls to get rid of high pitched ring in a room.
    Since I've done this my floor tom has been a joy to tune. Also using the cotton ball hack but using cotton rounds so they lay flat. They jump up when you hit the drum and fall flat in the bottom head. Like a really gentle gate. Loving it!

    Interesting. The tuning of the two with/without is different. This is clear in the louder comparisons at the end. I wonder if that was the actual lug tension not being matched or acoustically, the "size of the room" inside the drum being divided into two chambers, so to speak? The "with fabric" version is higher in pitch. Acoustically, perhaps this is the high frequency dampening the towel does inside the drum chamber. This may affect harmonics and change how much we hear the fundamental pitch versus the harmonics, if at the same lug tension. You'd think the fundamental would be the more dominant sound with the towel, but who knows? I love exploring hacks like this and your channel makes it less work for me! Rad videos, guys.

    • @flocore
      @flocore Před 4 lety +2

      I noticed the pitch difference, too and assume, it comes from the batter head being tuned slightly higher than in the first example. I don't think this has something to do with the air chamber being divided into two halves, since the heads are the tone-giving components and their tension is crucial.

    • @McKayGarner
      @McKayGarner Před 4 lety +2

      Flo Core Tuning is very likely the thing. I’ve seen freaky things happen with acoustics, though, so I’d be curious to have Sounds Like a Drum chime in on whether they verified the tuning or not. It seems like a No.

  • @cantthinkanameup
    @cantthinkanameup Před 4 lety +3

    I found for my taste I use two ply heads top and bottom of my floor toms. This gives the ability to tune the bottom head up a bit more than the top so the drum will project without having the basketball type sound. Works for me no matter what tom size. I do use clear heads top and bottom, I prefer them over coated heads.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety +2

      Good stuff! We often tune resos higher than the batter for more modern sounds and then the opposite for more jazz stylings. Haven’t ever felt like two-ply reso heads were a requirement (or a fix) for tuning the reso higher but that’s excellent that you’ve found something that works for you- that’s what counts! Cheers! -Ben

    • @cantthinkanameup
      @cantthinkanameup Před 4 lety

      Sounds Like A Drum Yeah it definitely gives a really deep thuddy sound a ton of resonance, which is exactly the sound I’m after. I just find that with the heads the same thickness top and bottom there is a naturally lower fundamental, and you can get a nice feel on the batter without tuning it too high. If it sounds rad it sounds rad right? Thanks for all you guys do on the channel. Ive learned a ton from you guys!

Then when the speech mic is back on it's extremely loud and I have to reach for the volume knob super quick. Maybe you can try to even the mics a little better.
    Thank you, you're doing a great job either way !

    • @SoundsLikeADrum

      Hi Eyal! Thanks for the kind words. You may have noticed the callout that we don't compress our drum audio. As a result, the dynamic range is far greater and more natural. Believe it or not, the drum demos are actually peaking 6dB higher than the narrative on average. If you're listening in a quiet environment on good speakers or with a pair of headphones, this is actually quite listenable. We've opted not to lower the narrative portions significantly beyond their current levels. Unfortunately this is all symptomatic of the "loudness wars" that we've been subjected to by over-compressed musical recordings. Having listened to this episode on a variety of audio playback systems, I can assert that the presentation is as we intend. Thanks for watching!

    • @fairweatherfriends.
      @fairweatherfriends. Před 4 lety +4

      Sounds Like A Drum I kinda agree with Eya that it can be painful when you have volume up for the drums and then your voice comes in. And it’s not like you’re yelling. It wouldn’t be that much of an extra step to slightly lower the talking portions. I think it’s good advice but its your gig . 🤷‍♂️

    The air space inside the drum is where most of the elasticity and hence tone lives. The air mass / air spring is what makes a drum work. They don't work in a vacuum.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety

      Certainly- and it seems that, primarily with larger drums, the waves that exist inside the drum create an odd build up of frequencies that results in the basketball tone so anything that breaks up the cylindrical symmetry helps to mitigate the issue to varying degrees. Would also be fun to experiment with shell port sizes to see if that has any (positive) effect. -Ben

    • @weareallbeingwatched4602
      @weareallbeingwatched4602 Před 4 lety

      @@SoundsLikeADrum thinking in more detail about this, the "basketball" resonance may well be a higher frequency lensed reflection happening parallel to the skin, rather than the typical air spring effect which is investigated and visualized using speckle pattern interferometry in this fascinating research paper: asa.scitation.org/doi/10.1121/1.4831235
      Full PDF:
      www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=viennatalk2015.mdw.ac.at/proceedings/ViennaTalk2015_submission_43.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiBoeegzfjqAhVBXxoKHTt3AtsQFjABegQIBBAB&usg=AOvVaw2HEbyuE04XIotFc_yujmgJ&cshid=1596237135823
      Placing the T shirt or absorber as a curtain may well remove the side-to-side high frequency reflections while not impacting the main modal resonance of the coupled drum heads and air column.
      Wrapping the interior of the drum skin with foam rubber would deliver a resonance-destroying level of damping. Standing waves and resonance require a reflective surface or hard boundary.

    That's a really crazy thing. I've never seen anyone do that. Considering you could fix the sound of the drum with tuning or some external muffling, it does seem a bit extreme to take a head off and put a curtain inside the drum. But it certainly is a dramatic difference. I'm not sure that the drum sounded better though. It definitely still had the annoying pitch-bendiness but with less sustain and less mids it was less prominent.

      Definitely an excellent hack if you're going for that ultra-low floor tom sound that so many djent/prog/metal players are into right now, which depends on tuning the reso higher with the batter SUPER low. Even still, there are some drums where that tone is so pronounced and painful with a more straight ahead tuning and it just can't quite be mitigated through tuning alone.
      This also teaches us all something about the physics of these drums (even if we already knew it- demonstration certainly solidifies that knowledge) and issues with acoustics. Cheers! -Ben

      Yes, swinging a cord between tension rod bolts at ten & two o'clock & hanging a tee shirt over the internal "washing line" would tamper with the kickdrum sound in interesting ways by waving in the drum's internal "breeze" & the difference between ported & not would be interesting.

Approximately one inch from the rim with one drill hole for each tension rod on both top and bottom skins (while the skins are still tensioned on the drum).I have experimented on snares ,toms and bass drums with interesting results using either 1/32nd ,1/16th or 1/8th drill bits.Would love to see your results in a video .

    SEMI-RELATED Question: I am wondering if there are any techniques similar to this (or different) that could make the use of internal mic's (MAY™ mic'ing system) more usable and less artificial sounding. My suspicion is "no"... but worth asking. If enough people have an interest, maybe it'd be worth exploring. I was one who-in the mid '90s-had blindly invested into the MAY™ mic'ing system for my large kit... and was immediately disappointed that I drilled into all my shells just to have my drums sound like I was mic'ing the inside of a gym dodge-ball. Over the years, I tried *MANY* tricks with various EQ and phase, but even as "good" as I could get it... it was immediatley dwarfed by A/B'ing it with a simple external mic' with no EQ or tricks. Do you think there's any way to mic' the inside of a drum and not have it sound like the inside of a drum...? :D Love the channel... keep 'em coming.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Scott! The internal mic setup is a tough one, particularly when you're using full resonant heads. We've yet to try it but I wonder if a strip of foam running between a set of top and bottom lugs would be enough to help disrupt the internal symmetry in such a way that would help mitigate this issue. We've yet to hear of anything that's built around the MAY system though.
      Thanks for the kind words! Cheers! -Ben

      Hey Scott F.
      Read the question you had on getting a better sound with inside drum micing.
      In the most extreme cases, I have had to literally place half inch foam inside the drum and let it lightly touch the batter head.
      Too much pressure may sound over muffled yet not enough can give you a vibrating buzz. So look for the happy medium. You may also use moon gel if gel is new and clean.
      Good luck and remember when it comes to muffling drums "no muffled too tough".

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety

  • @tlkshowhst
    @tlkshowhst Před 4 lety

    It's actually an acoustic phenomenon, not a tuning one.
    Essentially it's flutter echo. It's the same thing that happens when you clap your hands in an empty room. The sound reflects off of the surfaces at different times.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety

      Yes and no (and tuning affects the acoustics too!). Some of it also has to do with the tension of the reso head. Some of this can be mitigated through tuning but, particularly in a square sized floor tom (16x16” for example) there’s only so much that can be done.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  Před 4 lety

      Completely different. A stick bag (or any weight) outside the drum will reduce resonance but doesn't impact the way that air moves inside the drum, which is the culprit of the "basketbally" tone. -Ben

This hack fixed the FT when it was being stuck but for some reason the kick was still causing a resonance from the FT that was nearly the same thing. I fixed that with a EQ Notch filter at 75.370 Hz on the FT. It didn't seem to really effect the FT tone when being struck in a noticeable way. Thanks!
