ROVER 75 BRAKE TIME! Part 2 - Rear discs & pads / solid to vented / easy handbrake adjustment guide
Please note the school boy error that I fitted the discs BACKWARDS as I'd been filming using my selfie camera, so it looked fine to me at the time as obviously a selfie camera is mirrored!
Part 1 - Front discs & pads - Covering removing, and replacing front discs and brake pads on a Rover 75 / MG ZT 284mm front vented discs, also replacing with an upgraded disc option from MTEC discs. With additional advice on component wear and treatment.

Part 2.1 - Rear discs & pads, upgrading solid to vented rear discs - Covering removing, and replacing rear discs and brake pads on a Rover 75 / MG ZT from solid 280mm rear discs to vented 276mm rear discs, changing wider caliper & carrier. Additionally using an upgraded disc option from MTEC discs. With additional advice on component wear and treatment.
Part 2.2 - Rear handbrake adjustment - Covering how to correctly adjust a handbrake on a Rover 75, how to overcome the typically loose handbrake design with adjustment in car and inside the disc. Worth trying before you fit a MINI R40 handbrake compensator or replace your brake cables.

Part 3 - I'd fitted the discs BACKWARDS as I'd been filming using my selfie camera, so it looked fine to me at the time as obviously a selfie camera is mirrored! This is just a quick update as i'd chnaged them!

Hi, I really enjoyed these two videos. Quite rare these days to see Rover mechanical videos on youtube, especially in non potato/calculator resolution. Commentary was top notch too. Hope you keep going and filming any other future repairs. Thanks for the videos.

Good that you took the time to fully detail this process. Every used car I buy, I thoroughly check the Brakes at the first opportunity. Good Policy... Brakes matter!
Irrespective of what the seller or previous owner tells me they have been serviced, renewed or attended too. Two Rovers and one MG had hefty Invoices for work done on their Brakes shortly before I bought the cars. They were all owners who did not know their way around a set of tools so entrusted their cars to the trade. Glad I do these checks as poor workmanship and hurried work meant those brakes were not operating like they should.
By the way. Drilled and slotted Brake Discs are usually "handed". Designed to fit on one side of the car only. Twenty odd years ago, I fitted drilled and slotted front Discs to my MG Montego Turbo. After the first few miles of gentle application, I then tried them at speed and they certainly pinned the car down nicely .. accompanied by a strange high pitched Turbine like buzzing noise as soon as I applied the brakes at speed which reduced in volume as the car was slowed. Until it stopped when the car stopped. It was an interesting noise and puzzled me. Slept on it overnight then a possibility dawned on me. The "handed" feature meant the curved slots ( like those in your videos ) would either be trailing ( correct side ) or leading if fitted on the incorrect side. That was my theory.
At speed, I suspect air is trapped by the curved leading slots and each time it reaches the pads it's compressed making a high pitched popping sound. I removed the two front discs and moved them to the other side of the car. No more unusual noises when braking from speed.
Unless I'm mistaken, I think I saw you fitted those Discs with their slots leading when the car is in forward motion. Any unusual noises when braking hard from speed?

I did indeed! That's why it goes from being light to almost pitch black in Part 2 as I had to swap them around after going through it all! I'd managed to get front and rear wrong. Lmao. Haha!
I'd been using the front selfie camera which was mirrored, so they looked correct to me as I'd been checking footage going along, checking footage and going back to work on them.
Needless to say people within a 10 mile radius heard me swear at that one haha!

Good simple directions, personally i would have replaced the brake hoses as well, don't like clamping brake hoses because it can cause the inner pipe to close up a little, so i just add a bar to the brake pedal, this stops any air getting into the system, also closes off the module. great work keep it going.

Fair point. But they where replaced with braided hoses since the video as they had not arrived in time during filming.

My handbrake is terrible. It goes to the top and still not solid.

Do the vented disc make much of a noticeable difference to real life driving dynamics ?

    • @RobsonRoverRepair
      @RobsonRoverRepair  Před 3 lety +1

I would dare say not really on a 75 or zt in normal circumstances.
Its probably why as part of project drive they made everything solid rear again on all zt & ztt's from vin 252351 onwards, and by the end all the 190s had solids also. Cost cutting no doubt as much as real world function.
This is my autobahn car, I do about 3000 miles a year in it over France, Germany, Austria etc now, so any improvements at high speed 100mph braking I will take it with my family on board.
In everyday driving you wouldn't even notice it. But it's an easy upgrade and if your calipers are worn as mine where, why not as the discs are the same price and you use the same size pads anyways.

@@RobsonRoverRepair I agree entirely, they look nicer and more interesting though.
There again, If you lived high up in the Alps and frequently descended maybe those Brake components would get hotter and hotter. I have rarely ever experienced Brake Fad except when really pressing on and deliberately seeing how the brakes shape up after repeated applications from speed.
By the way, the Chinese MG6 which has much MG ZT Longbridge DNA, does have VENTED rear discs. Not measured them ,but they do look identical. The Front Calipers on the MG6 look like those on Rover 75s. The 75's MINTEX Brake Pads are a perfect fit in them too.
