    H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    We're up to week 215 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on September 11, 1977, and originally aired in mid-October of 1977.
    Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and here are the three familiar panelist who are joining them this week:
    ~~~Semi-regular Patti Deutsch returns after seven weeks off. This is now her 34th week (of 42 total), and she has matched 1 out of her 2 attempts at the H/H.
    ~~~Elaine Joyce is back for her 19th week (of 26 total). Elaine last graced the panel in episodes 1026-1030, and is 1 for 1 in the H/H.
    ~~~Last but not least, Dick Martin appears for his 10th week (of 22 total). He last popped up in episodes 1041-1045 and will be the panel's only H/H virgin next week.
    Well, King Richard dominated again last week (what else is new?), answering four out of five H/H questions. Reviewing the past 69 weeks, Richard has played 299 times. Everyone else combined played 48 times. (Charles had 16 opportunities, Brett 12, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered a jaw-dropping *86.2%* of all the H/H questions over these past 69 weeks.
    Richard starts off the week with a very good track record of having matched 41.7% of his H/H questions, but that's still more than one percentage point lower than Brett's score of 42.9%. And then there's Charles at 47.8%, Fannie at 48.3%, Betty at 50.0%... So why is Richard chosen ten times more often than either Brett or Charles if they actually match more often, percentage-wise?
    As with every week, I begin with high hopes that there will be a little variety when it comes to the stars answering the H/H questions, and every week lately has been a disappointment (although last week, the last-minute surprise of Marcia Wallace being chosen was a welcome and entertaining development).
    When the "Star Wheel" arrives in episode 1246, we'll finally get to see a more varied set of celebs answering head-to-head questions, but it'll also be a bittersweet moment, reminding us of how close we are to the final goodbye from Gene Rayburn and the Match Game '7x family...
    In the meantime, I hope to see a few more weeks like episodes 851-855 which demonstrated just how fun and exciting the head-to-head match could be, with *four different celebs* all scoring matches that week! - Betty 1/2, Richard 1/2, Charles 1/2, Brett 1/1
    All right, here we go with another __________ week of Match Game '77!
    ~~~Today's action:
    Last week ended in a three-to-three tie, so we kick off the new week with a tie-breaker. (At least every celeb gets to answer right away, unlike those odd occasions when a new panelist has to sit out the first question because the prior panelist already matched the contestant.)
    Our long-time champion is roundly defeated, five to zero. After winning five games, he departs with $7,500.
    *Today's audience match question: "Intestinal________"*
    (My thoughts: Blockage, Discomfort, Fortitude)
    The celebs: Brett (Flu), Charles (Disorder), Richard (Fortitude)
    The choice: Flu (Personally, I would have gone with "Fortitude.")
    The answers: Track [sic], Fortitude, Flu (Wow! I'm surprised but pleased for the contestant.)
    Since we have a new champion, we can play our favorite guessing game again. Will she stick with Brett for the H/H or default to Team Richard? (I'm pretty sure it'll be one or the other.)
    Our new champion appears pensive, as if her mind isn't made up. But, good gray, Marie! It's Brett! So this is the second time in a row that King Richard wasn't selected. The last time that happened was back in episodes 1005 and 1006 when Charles was tapped two consecutive times. The last time two different non-Richard stars were chosen back-to-back was in 971 (Meg Bennet) and 972 (Fannie).
    Stats: Brett last played in 1037 (match), 982 (match), 858 (no match) 854 (match), 818 (match), and before that in 804 (no match). She's matched 11 out of her 19 most recent attempts (57.9%), which goes all the way back to episode 641. Overall, she's matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%)
    For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 299 of his 717 attempts (41.7%). Patti matched one of her two attempts, and Elaine matched on her one and only try so far. Dick Martin has never been chosen to answer a H/H question.
    *Today's H/H question: "________Lock"*
    ("Pad-" was my first thought.)
    The contestant, Brett, and Gene all seem pensive. None shows any sign of having come up with an answer yet. Nothing else is coming to me, and I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Brett writes what looks like three or four letters, but she's shaking her head. She looks over at Charles and seems to reconsider her answer. She shakes her head again and writes something else that again looks like three (or possibly four) letters and this time files her card.
    "Dead" lock says our champion. Hmm. Now that I hear it, it sounds good, despite the audience's negative reaction. I'm almost afraid to hit play though, content to stay in a sort of Schrödinger's cat situation, where Brett has potentially matched.
    Well, enough stalling...
    Wow. I've been matching the celebs far better than the contestants lately: "Pad"
    (In the H/H postmortem, Gene offers door lock, Richard says jail lock, Elaine says hemlock, and from off stage, Johnny offers wedlock.)
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Now here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts).
    Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts).
    Richard - 41.7% (299 wins in 717 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1071, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
    Elaine Joyce and Patti Deutsch are here to double the Dingbat Quotient for your amusement. Elaine also does duty as the Sole Survivor. When WAS the last time we had 2 living people on the same panel? I remember one amazing week where we actually had 3!
    Wow. In the Mickey Mouse question, he "just turned 46 years old." To show how time flies, he's a couple months shy of 95 today (according to Wikipedia, his first appearance was November, 28, 1928, which would have actually made him almost 49 in late 1977).
