    CORRECTION: At 8:00 I stated that I overblew throat A for altissimo Eb. That is incorrect- overblowing throat G# will give you altissimo Eb (which is what I did). I guess my fingers weren't talking to my brain, lol. 😆

      ahahaha i heard that and i was like "wow! are the overtones on your instrument that flat compared to a Bb clarinet?!?!?!"

    I’m an Eb clarinetist and I’m recently practicing III Concerto by O. Navarro, which contains Bb and Eb solo parts.
    When I practice only with Eb clarinet it sounds all well and good. But when I’m going through the whole piece and switch from Bb to Eb, I can’t even play a satisfying long note.
    I was shocked bc I just got my brand new buffet Tosca Eb clarinet half year ago, and I’ve had a lot of doubling experiences with clarinets and even saxophones.
    I realized doubling when playing a concerto is much harder than in wind band. That’s why I found this video and I hope it helps.

    I’ve been playing the Eb for about a year now, and I’m finally starting to realize some of these tips. I still definitely need to work on my altissimo fingerings and such, but it does get better. Thanks for the good tips!

    Awesome video. I play a lot of Eb and definitely agree on these. Another helpful thing that made a difference for me is to get the Clark Fobes extension. Doesn't extend the range of the horn but it really smooths out the E/B 12th which is generally very stuffy at least on Buffet horns.

    As someone who doubles a lot and has to play a lot of auxiliary instruments, these tips apply to a lot more than just Eb clarinet. Definitely useful around the board

    my set up vintage bundy believe it or not its pretty good- charles bay mpc and lig and deg 41 mm barrel and mitchill lurie or vandy 2.3-3 reeds

      Actually, from what I've read, the old bundy e-flat clarinet had the same scale of Selmer Paris e-flat clarinets at the time. They can be really nice when set up correctly

    Nice video, John - brings to mind the following limerick: The clarinet’s great for the labor Of Mozart, of Schubert, of Weber; But when Schoenberg lets fly With the E-flat up high, You’d rather not have him as neighbor. 🙄😂

      Larry!!! Great to hear from you and thanks for the kind words. As an Eb clarinet ‘owner’ and not an Eb player like you, that limerick applies more to myself. 🤣 Please give my best to Ralph and thanks for watching!

    My high D on my Eb Clarinet is actually sharp. The most in tune fingering for me is to play the standard fingering without the pinky. And in some cases an overblown open G. Just depends.

    • @john.kurokawa
      @john.kurokawa  Před měsícem

      Yep. It's a problem. Overblown open G is usually my favorite too! Thanks for watching!

    Do you like the Mitchell Lurie Mouthpiece? And what do you think about the cutout barrels?

    • @john.kurokawa
      @john.kurokawa  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I was never fortunate enough to have tried Mitchell Lurie mouthpieces when they were in production (either in rubber or crystal). My preference is to use Eb reeds, thus I haven’t tried barrels that accommodate cutoff Bb reeds. If it works though, I’d say use it! Thanks for watching!

    • @tabbywarrior
      @tabbywarrior Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@john.kurokawa That's alright! I'm curious, what kind of E flat reeds do you use? I play a B40 with 3.5 traditional right now.

    • @john.kurokawa
      @john.kurokawa  Před 7 měsíci

      @@tabbywarrior I use Traditional 3.5. The V12's are way too stiff for me, although I haven't experiemented with them as much.

    Can someone tell me the difference between an Eb clarinet and a Bb?

    • @john.kurokawa
      @john.kurokawa  Před 7 měsíci

      The Eb is the tiny one in the thumbnail. It’s pitched higher than the normal Bb soprano. It’s used in orchestra, band, and of course, clarinet choir! 😁
