SHIMANO SAINT SPD PEDALS?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

- Welcome back to Horns High Mountain Biking...
In this video I'm unboxing and testing out a brand new SPD pedal from Shimano. But this isn't just an SPD pedal, this is a SAINT SPD pedal! The Saint lineup is reserved for the absolute best of the best in durability, reliability and performance. So these pedals better be great, right?
So sit back, crack open a cold one and let's see if Shimano goes home a hero or a zero with their latest SPD offering.
I've been very happy with my Shimano XT Trail SPD pedals but they could use some additional support in the form of a bigger cage.
This will improve my riding in two ways:
1) I'll have a wider contact patch with the pedal, which will help distribute the forces from high speed corners and big landings across a larger portion of my feet.
2) That wider contact patch will also help me adjust/maintain my balance during low-speed, rocky, techy terrain when the going gets dicey.
However, I have a couple of concerns:
1) The Saints weigh about 168 grams MORE. And that's not just weight, that's rotational weight. And rotational weight is something I pay attention to on my bike. Will that weight be noticeable?
2) Will this larger cage/platform get in the way when I get hung up on the rocks and need to get a foot on the ground on the quick?
In the comments below, let's talk about your pedals. What do you currently use and why? What other pedals have you tried?
#shimano
Let's talk about pedals! What pedals are you currently riding and are you thinking of trying something new?
I was a big fan of clipless pedals, I even bought the Shimano Saint SPD pedals... But I alsowanted to test flats, so I also ordered a pair of flat pedals Pedaling Innovations Catalyst. To summarize the situation in a few words, the Saint pedals will never be mounted on my bike. More precisely, no pedal other than the Catalysts from Pedaling Innovations will be mounted on my bike!
For sale: New and unused Shimano Saint SPD pedals.
Many of my friends run their pedals, too, and love them. I'm no stranger to flat pedals, I may need to check them out. 🤘
New trail rider here on plain SPD pedals (like PD-M520). Overall I'm happy with those but sometimes I put a foot down in technical sections (like cascading drops) and it can be tricky to get that foot back on the pedal fast in the midst of a bunch of gnarled roots and rocks. The clipless aren't great when not clipped in. I tried flat pedals and hated them. I'm hoping the saints will make those situations a little easier - being able to ride better when not fully clipped in.
Yep, those little bitty SPD pedals are tricky to get back in to. And when though think you're clipped in but then your foot slips off and the pedal swings around and says hi to your shin? Man I hate that. The Saints will at least give your shoe something to grab on to while you're getting clipped back in. And you can bash them on rocks without as much worry about messing them up. Cheers and happy tails! 🤘
I'm currently riding the xt trail. I've been a big fan. Especially when I switched to carbon xc shoes. I ride downhill bike parks and enduro tracks. I'm intrested in a bigger platform. I'll have to get a set.
Definitely see the new shoe 🤘🏽 dope review man!! Definitely going to get these pedals now. Thanks brotha
Love those pedals, i use the shimano hybrids (one side flat), which are really cool but i think i prefer the look of those you have, great vid.
Nice channel, raw and honest review. Love it. I was hesitant to spend money on those pedals. Going to order now! I also just registered
Thanks! 🤘🍻
Love your videos man! Keep doing what you’re doing
Thanks man, I really appreciate that.
Dude I Just ordered a set of these on July 4th. They will be my first step into the clipless world. Wish me luck. lol
I have been running the platform XT for enduro but these look like what I have been waiting for!!!! Thanks for the video
I really liked them. I think they'll be around for a while. Hey, congrats on O-Rock! That course looked brutal! 🤘🤘
I hope you will let me test em out once! Thanks, O- Rock was amazingly brutal this year, and I LOVED it.
Great video and review! Keep it up Bro, Love the channel!
dude! so stoked about this video! those pedals are exactly what i've been looking for. like you, i've ridden shimano XTRs but wanted more platform. I tried crank brothers mallet LS but found them horrible. the saint looks like it'd be a good fit (literally). thanks for the great review.
Thanks! Good to hear from ya. I've been enjoying the Saints. It was a nice change and I think these pedals will be on the bike for a while. I got mine up at Velo+ in Lenexa if you're in the neighborhood.
sweet. flow ride looked like tons of fun. is that a KC trail?
had mallet Es, have xt spd, going saint platform for more shoe supper on enduros. mallets have a sweet spot on release and DOES NOT dis engage in any agle but have best platform feel and entrance, xt have best dis engagement in ANY angle but engagement is sketchy with min support. Im thinking the saint platform spd will be the best of both worlds.looking foward to it.
Considering next pedal choice. Started on EggBeaters, went to SPD’s, was on flats but just brought a new bike so might try my old spd’s for a bit before committing one way or the other
Love your smooth easy style of delivery! I've ridden SPD (xc no platform) for years Thousands of miles. Recently switched to Ht Ae03 flats, and it has upped my game big time! I love my flats but love the idea of a hybrid so I just tried a set of Crank bro's Mallets. They felt exactly like my SPD's I could not feel the cage at all and they were a little tight to get out of. I'm sure they will loosen up over time. Maybe i just need a softer pair of shoes, wearing Specialize's enduro shoe. Long story "Longer! I find no draw back in flats. They pedal as well as clip-less but more important than getting my foot out, I can get it back on the flat pedal much faster in tricky situation. I'm clip-less on moderate trail but flats on the crazy stuff.
You touched on one of my complaints about SPD pedals in general: getting back on the gas after disengagement. Yep, you're very right. I can get clipped back in fairly quick, but I can get back on flats much quicker. 🤘
Do these pedals have any degree of float like the crankbrothers before coming unclipped?
They do. I'm not sure how many degrees tho.
Nice review! You should do more of these! If I were to start riding clipless again, these would be high on the list if not the top. I'm riding the Chesters now and seriously thinking about the OneUp flats for a bit wider platform.
Those OneUps look awesome and I bet they are great performers. I keep wanting to tell you how good that shroom was but everyone might get the wrong idea. But seriously, that morel mushroom was very tasty with my avacado omelette. 🤘🤗
Glad you enjoyed! Need to get out and look for more!
I am new into riding after many years and never rode clipless before. My bike needs had me look at this as an option because sometimes I hop on for a short ride around the corner and I don't want to change shoes but I have the option to clip for more and I don't have to change the pedals out with my mind or need. It is all personal but I feel this is a great option to have both for a beginner in one shot to get used to riding again and to go clipless as well.
Give them a shot but I'll be honest, riding on these kind of pedals with flat shoes isn't as comfy as riding on a true platform pedal. The SPD cleat sticks up above the platform enough to get in the way of riding them without an SPD shoe.
Having said that, if you're talking about doing a brief neighborhood Cruise or something like that, you'd probably be okay. But the SPD cleat will start letting you know it's there pretty soon.
Would be interesting to see how these perform with different shoes with different levels of stiffness. I suspect the stiffer the shoe the less benefit from these hybrid pedals. If your shoe confirms a bit to the pedal then there’s a contact with the platform otherwise I suspect there isn’t. But then again you still have the platform to use if you can’t get clipped in. So maybe riders with stiffer enduro type shoes or Xc type shoes will just get more weight with no benefit. Not everyone likes the big five ten style of shoe.
Those look SICK!!!
Outdoor Gold | I've been enjoying them. I can't remember if you run SPD's or flats. What pedals do you have?
I used to run clipless, right now I'm running flats, local GJ company makes extra big flat pedals called Pedaling Innovations Catalysts. I actually became a big fan of that style.
Sweet. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the heads up.
I started out on XTs and rode those for a long time. I've switched to XT Trails and have been really happy with them for a couple years now. I'm in the same boat here looking for more of a platform for the more aggressive, DH style of riding. I'm torn between these Saint pedals and the HT X2. I have become very familiar with the SPD cleat system over about 15 years of riding so I'm not sure if I want to switch it up.
I pondered the same thing with these pedals vs Crankbrothers Mallet DH pedals but went with the Shimanos because of familiarity.
I also got the shimano saint pedals and I really like them. I think they are really comfortable. they are my first pair of clipless pedals.
I am old enough that I started on rat-traps with clips and straps - the straps were always kept loose. I early adopted SPD with some Ritchey Logic pedals. My new bike has Issi Flash SPD pedals. I have thought about trying some hybrid ones as I think it might be good to be able to stay uncliped at times, like having to restart in a techie section.
Yep, I remember rat traps. Those things were tricky but for their time they did what they needed to do. I had them on an old Gary Fisher Tassjuara.
Specialized Rockhopper in yellow followed by a beautiful lugged frame, Tange Prestige tubed, Jamis Dakar. Wish I still had that one.
Ahhhh, the Dakar. That bike has made more people happy. I've known several people with those and they've loved them.
Nice review!! I am looking for SPD pedals which I can use them at the same time with normal shoes. Do you think those pedals are appropriate?
Nope. You'll need an SPD shoe.
Mine failed on one side within a week - returned for a refund. Though they're a great form factor for anything, no downsides other than weight maybe. With the pins installed they can be used with flat shoes in a pinch too
Hey man, great video. I also live and ride in Kansas City and am wondering what the name of the trail and where it is located that you road with all the jumps and berms. Thanks
Zach Legg | The flow trail is called Flowride. Check out Trailforks. I think there's a map on there. 🤘
I do road touring, originally tried my MTB Speedplay Frogs but found they were too small of a pedal and my feet would hurt after awhile, so I switched to Shimano A530 because it had a larger platform than the Frogs, but sort of like the Frogs I can feel the pedal hitting the ball of my foot which is where I have arthritis issues. So would these Shimano Saint SPD pedals be a better choice for road touring over the other two that I have?
I don't think I would recommend them for what you're looking for. These would probably feel very similar to your Shimanos. I'm not sure what kind of arthritis pain you have or if you've experimented with adjusting your cleat position but sometimes those adjustments can help. Getting your foot further forward can alleviate some knee/hip pain.
@@RideWithGravity Thanks for the reply, my arthritis issues is in the ball of my foot and lower part of my toes.
Just subscribed. Cool channel
Thanks and welcome! 🤘🍻
i just got a pair of the saints after riding my mallet dh's. I think I like the spd clip system a lot better than crank bros just because it is so easy and predictable. I thought I was going to notice a difference in my foot not touching the platform on the saints vs the mallets completely touching my shoe but I could not tell a difference at all haha. Im ridin shimano from now on for sure.
I've always wanted to try the Mallets but never got around to pulling the trigger on them. They seem like good pedals tho.
@@RideWithGravity they are good pedals but they break down a lot. I was having issues with the clip mechanism rattling around and the brass cleats are just a dumb idea. And I paired em with the crank bros shoes and I couldn't run them stock as the pedals wouldn't connect with the cleats. I ended up having to put 2 shims in each which is kinda weird.
That's exactly what prevented me from ever getting them. I heard too many experiences just like yours to have the confidence in their pedals. They make great multi-tools but they're pedals seem over-engineered and lacking in performance.
@@RideWithGravity yea i mean you can find them on sale pretty easily if you wanna try em out but I think shimano is just better. The saints are real nice and you know when you clip in/out on them.
On the other hand, their shoes are amazing. I use their mallet dh shoes so I can run the cleats really far back and it's awesome. nice and comfy too.
Nice review, how do you think this will handle a stiffer sole xc shoe? Here in Brazil especially where I ride in some forest areas is pretty wet and flat soles really don't help pushing the bike in some places when needed.
I think they would do really well.
@@RideWithGravity thanks mate, but I still in between the saints and the mallets, I saw people complaining about the saints not having much support on the platform when compared to the mallets...
I was in the same situation. I really wanted the Mallet DH pedals. Then I started hearing about their bearings wearing out so I went with the Saints. The Mallets have a good design but I didn't want to have to rebuild them when the bearings wear out.
@@RideWithGravity that's what's keeping me from buying them, here in Brazil those things are expensive, and having to rebuild them from time to time is kinda nonsense lol. I work with machining and I have access to a lathe, I was thinking about machining the bushings out of Brass-Graphite wich is used in heavy machinery, but I'm afraid of getting the pedals and even with better bushings it will cause problems. I usually buy bike parts directly from China cause they cost half of their official price here, but the crank brothers are not marketed over there. And the Saints will cost half of what the mallets cost here. Anyway, I'll see what I'll do, thanks dude!
@@JeffWagen and what id you do Jeff?? Are the shimanos better than the mallets??
Rode CrankBros for years. Then I got my FS bike and went flats. RaceFace Chester's.
For sale: New and unused Shimano Saint pedals.
Coming from an Old School ('80s) BMX background, first I don't think I'd like clipless pedals...but moreso, I can't get behind Any pedal that uses a bushing where there should be ball bearings (sealed). Most shop owners and even mechanics don't even know there Are bushings in these pedals! I've had a couple different mechanics have to take them apart to see for themselves!
Update: found MY perfect pedals - 3 bearing Fooker flat pedals from Amazon. They have 3 sealed cartridge ball bearings instead of one plus a bushing (like those Saints being reviewed). I've been using them for more than a year and they hold up.
does it offers a good grip and support to the shoe? just incase when the shoe is not yet clip-in and the bike is running..
Much better than a regular XT trail SPD for sure. Not as much as a true platform but you definitely have something for your shoe to grab on to when you aren't clipped back in yet.
@@RideWithGravity woaah i see., thanks for your reply mate and the review!.
You bet! 🤘
Can you use these without an SPD shoe? I have old DX spd pedals, and I can still ride around without my spd shoes. I don’t ride long; mostly in my driveway trying to ride wheelies and little jumps. Is it possible with these?
I wouldn't recommend it. The SPD cleats stick above the platform pedal and I bet it would be poking right up near the ball of your foot.
@@RideWithGravity thanks!
buddy, did you tried the mallets?? are you still using the shimanos?
thanks for the feedback!
I haven't tried them yet but two of my friends have used them for years and love them. I've heard they need a rebuild more frequently than the Shimanos but other than that, they are a great pedal.
As for my current pedals, I moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and I've been riding some really challenging (for me) rock features so after 24 years of being clipped in I decided to learn how to ride on flat pedals. For the last two years I've been riding the Catalyst from Pedaling Innovations.
so would you say the mech of the xt is still exactly the same a the Saint still?
That's a good question. Off the top of my head I would say yes.
Thank you for the fast reply, I am pleasantly surprised
So my question was my attempt at helping you out without sounding like a SNOT!!@@RideWithGravity
What do you think of the shimano sh-56 multi directional cleats? Worth getting?
If you're new to SPD's, most definitely. It's a spooky thought knowing that you're feet are gonna be "locked" onto your pedals. It's a mind bender.
Horns High Mountain Biking
I’ve road biked for years. Just started mtb this summer. Started out with crank brothers. Fell over a lot. Went to flats. Done about 750 on the flats. Ready to clip in now. Just bought a pair of saints and waiting on them to get here.
Do pins touch the shoe? I saw other reviews saying that they are usless..
Nope. If the pins were in contact with your shoe you wouldn't be able to twist out of your cleats. The pins are there for when you have to do a quick dab and you're getting your foot back on the pedal. They give your foot something solid to grab onto until you get clipped back in.
They remind me of crank brothers dh pedals.
But do they feel like having a platform underneath the shoe? I see it loos like the cleat is a little upward
If you're coming from platforms you won't feel that same broad support you get from a platform, but if your shoes have a stuff sole you won't feel unsupported. The feel is kind of in between to me.
@@RideWithGravity I have a candy from CB but even tho I have the rose clips my feets don't get out on time. I borrow and spd shimano the little ones and I love the fact that you can adjust the cleat, and so looking for shimano alike options.
I think the Saints will feel very similar to the pedals you borrowed.
Late to the comment party here, but did you notice the weight difference of these at all? I'm pretty close to picking a pair up but 545g (without the pins) seems pretty chunky.
When I held the two in my hands, totally. The Saints are a heavy duty pedal. And I could even notice the weight the first few times I picked up my bike. But once I was on the bike I really didn't notice much. After a few rides I didn't notice them at all.
@@RideWithGravity Sweet, thanks! Other reviews seem to say this too, not super noticeable and/or worth it for the extra platform & durability. Appreciate the fast response!
i had EggBeaters, don't like them, too much free play, now i have shimano M530 but had a crash and bent the right one, so now i'm into buying the saints… hope they will last longer...
Those are cool gloves. Can someone please tell me the brand . Thanks.
Those are made by Tasco-MTB. Copy and paste this link and it'll take you to their site:

where u got the spokes from ? sick
Thanks! Those are from Industry Nine.
Hi man! Is it possibile to use the SH56 on these pedals or only SH51? thanks
Good question. I can't find any info on that. I'm leaning toward yes but I'm not certain.
@@RideWithGravity thanks anyway for your reply! As soon as i receive them i Will try!
You bet! Lemme know how they work out!
Good video! I’ve been using the saint clipless with the sh56 for a couple months and never had an issue with accidental unclip. I was worried initially about that but after riding double black rated DH trails and some tech climbing, the sh56 does help a lot. Good luck!
Thanks! 🤘🍸
I'd love to see these compared with the crank bros dh mallets
Me, too. Most definitely. I was actually planning on getting the Mallets but at the last second I heard about these Saints and had to check them out instead. I think the Mallets would be very comparable. Several of my friends have them and love them.
I might do a review on these myself. I always rode Shimano m520s then switched the the enduro mallets and now have the saints. The mallets are better in performance sorry to say, however, the crank brothers as usual are no where near the reliability of Shimanos, on top of that they need money spent on them quite often. The Shimanos are bullet proof but not as good.
TheOracleCyclingChannel | I came really close to trying out the Mallets. I'm still curious about them. I have two bikes so I'd have to either get another pair of shoes or set both bikes up with Mallets.
Horns High Mountain Biking you need a side budget with mallets, the cleats are brass and wear out every 4-5 months, also the bearing go in no time at all. They cost about 60quid a year to keep running. Great pedals, terrible reliability.
I spy a new set of hellcats in the background!? ;)
DallasLopez1 😁
pins are no use for spd's you will just get your shin scrapped!
got a saint pedals and no pins.
love the platform
Good point. I removed my pins, too. I wanted to try them out for a bit to see if they aided in those times when you unclip to counterbalance a corner and aren't quite back in the pedals when you start pedaling again but my feet find the cleats really quick so I removed the pins.
Witch shoes are u riding ?
Just mtb shoes ?
Yep. 5Ten Hellcats.
I switched to flats to try to cure some bad habits. When I go back to clipless it'll be spd for sure and probably saints. I rode old school shimano dx pedals until I switched to flats , tried crank bros , not a big fan. Anyway I think these are comparable to my ancient dx .
Ha! I rode DX pedals on my Mountain Cycle San Andreas! And the 646's, too! 🤘
Mine are the 636 . They were probably made in the 90s lol
Im picking up a pair today, my old spds finally failed.👍
Nice! I've been running mine for a while now and I really like them.
@@RideWithGravity put them on last night and love em. Did 15 miles today and zero complaints!
After 6 months using them, they make crazy noise....
throw some chain Lube in them.. never fails to get those squeaks out
I like shimano pedals. M505 on road/crossbike, M9000 on xc and M820 for trail, enduro, dh. The thing with shimano is that they're at a pricepoint where they're hard to beat. Saint & Zee especially blow most others straight out of the water imo.
I agree with what most said on this particular pedal.
Crankbrothers is more expensive and sucks balls compared to the saint.
HT D1 is kinda okish, Although the weight savings don't make up for the lack of quality. Other then weight Saint wins. At half the price. HT also has to feel like a special snowflake with their own cleats. Boo Fucking Hoo. (388 grams)
KCNC wins if you can live with one sided. Same Price as HT D1 but lighter (284 grams). It's better in terms of feel (all their pedals are imho), But not by enough to justify the price. It's about 2 sets of saint pedals.
Nice! You really know your pedals! 🤘🤘
I run flats.
