- Hurricane Ian Aftermath North Naples Day 1
I recorded this video Thursday morning, September 29 2022
It was not my intention to blame the media. All I wanted to bring across was
that 5 years ago, during Irma, the messages from the media were so much more clear.
So people listened and evacuated, no casualties!
This time those messages were kind of vague.
Not just for me, it was 10th of thousands of people who did not understand the potential threat for SW Florida.
Of course, after the fact everyone is smarter...

So sorry you folks had to experience that. Glad you're safe. Prayers to you all in Florida.
Have a great weekend
Looking at this footage, I find it almost impossible to grasp the fact that you folks actually got off a lot easier than other areas. I've dealt with serious flooding three times in my lifetime. People can't begin to appreciate how horrible it is unless they've dealt with it personally. Mud, mold, sewage, warped wood... the list of problems are seemingly endless. They do end eventually though. I promise.
I wish you all the best. You will recover. It won't be easy but you will get past this.
God's loves those folks
Thank You for the kind words. After 30+ years in naples we have had our fair share, this is one of the worst natural disasters to come our way, we will clean up take care of one another and rebuild better than before.
@@cayminlast I admire your strength. I used to be like you. I lived through three major floods, fought against the power company responsible for years and eventually won. Forced them to spend millions to install sump pumps so we and 25 of our neighbors could stay in the homes we loved for over 25 years. Then, our home was destroyed by a landslide. Lol
We bought the house next door from the completely paid off one we lost. Nothing like taking on a brand new mortgage in your mid 50s to make you wonder who, up there, you somehow managed to anger.
You are right, only people who have been through something like that understand the severity and the impact on your life.
@Tara Wright they did get off alot easier...some had to deal with broken palm trees on their $$$$$$$$ homes...frightening for them.
Thank You for Sharing and Prayers for Y’all’s Safe Recovery❤
Thanks so much
Thank you for sharing this video. Stay safe and best wishes to you in your journey going forward.
Thanks so much for showing some of this area.
I applaud your video. I enjoy seeing news from sources outside the big news outlets.
This was indeed a big mistake ! We all thought it was hitting Tampa !! We got help from people who stay at our neighbors house because they came to Naples to evacuate Tampa !!! I live a mile from the beach in North Naples and been cleaning up nonstop since !! I feel blessed compared to other people are going through right now but I am scared - as we lost so much !!! It’s like a war zone here !!!
You build your house on the side of a volcano and guess what could happen.
We all love the wise-guy comments. You are soooo intelligent. Man, you are great. At least I guess this is the response you were hoping for. Right?
Thank you ✊
Thanks for sharing this on the ground footage. And what you said is so very true - property can be replaced. So sad for all the people lost.

Your house is Zone A - Mandatory evacuation. What more info do you need?
Yes, everyone LOVES those smart advises - after the fact. Keep it coming
Florida born and raised, have been through at least 7 hurricanes, i’m not scared of hurricanes but respect them. The media can’t be blamed for ignorance. What was it that people thought would be the effect of 140mph winds before this? Really? Even here in Fort Lauderdale we were prepared for the worst. Anytime you have a major hurricane brushing by within 500 miles, expect that it can go to you. It’s as simple as that.
Were you here? Did you watch our local news? Then don't judge me and 10thousand others that also "misunderstood" the messages.
I lived through IRMA, and at the time the messages were so much more clear! But sure, everyone is smarter after the fact and plays the wiseguy
Grear video Dirk. We hope you and your family doing well.
Thanks, see you here soon
Thanks for doing this video. 🙏
My pleasure!
Good footage and appreciate your info shared. So glad that hamburger place was open for you all w/o power!
So sad!!! Sorry this happened to your state!!! Hugs and Prayers for you and everyone there!!!
It doesn't matter where the media said it was hitting land, Ian was so big you would have been affected anyways.
It mattered. Compare Fort Myers to Sarasota
Our thoughts and love are with you - Regards
Excellent. Thanks
Thank you
Hey! My sister and her family were in that five guys. Glad to know they're ok
Great video my heart go out to you guys I’m blown away by the scale of the destruction. Please put out another update.

Really appreciate your report. Thank you.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
Thank you for uploading these videos. We would be very interested to see drone snd/or driving footage of Naples Park! We were so, so close to living there. Sending you best wishes.
I’ve been living in southeast Florida for 52 years now. And lived through many hurricanes. So I agree with you 100% with regards to blaming media. You need to rely on yourself not the media for research and facts.
It was not my intention to blame the media. All I wanted to bring across was that 5 years ago, during Irma, the messages from the media was much more clear. So people listened and evacuated, no casualties! This time it was kind of vague...
@@ParadiseBizz well not for nothing it was a much stronger storm Ian compared to Irma. We sat out on our patio during Irma. And those were 100+mph sustained winds. And the west coast didn’t get a direct hit like Ian either.
@@ParadiseBizz Well it sure came off that way. 5 years ago, you didn't have a governor who seems more concerned about capitalizing politically on "illegal aliens" than worrying about people drowning in a storm. I was watching the news channels closely, and they were showing the changes in the storm's track a full two days ahead of land fall. There was plenty of info out there about the dangers of this storm...how huge it was and how the effects would be very widespread. People have become too complacent, thinking that enhanced building standards will keep them safe. Unfortunately, a strong roof and hurricane shutters are no match for a huge storm surge (also accurately predicted, btw)
@@johnstone7697 Everyone is so much smarter after the fact.
Excuse me,i seem to have misplaced my boat.....
Almost funny
Praying for all of you in Florida, I have a friend in Naples that lost everything.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write a comment
I can't believe all the cars that floated away. Now the motors are ruined with salt water. It's just incredible how high the water got. Stay safe, I'm glad your ok. Thank you and God bless you. Best wishes to you Sir.
How could you not know it was going to be a huge storm surge? Even if the storm hit further north, you would’ve have had a huge flooding surge. I live in Tampa.
You are very smart. Actually after the fact, everyone is.
I respectfully have to disagree with one of the comments you made in the very beginning of your video the weather media did tell everybody including people in your area to be ready or evacuate . your area was still within the cone of uncertainty if you’re inside that cone you should act as if the storm is coming at you and act accordingly by evacuating. And yes I will agree early on they did say it was going toward Tampa but as it got closer to Florida the cone of uncertainty kept adjusting and everybody should’ve been watching closely to see where the track had moved to. With that being said my heart goes out to everyone down there I hope everybody stays safe and weathered the storm , but when you’re within that cone you have to diligently watch the weather forecast ,the day before it hit they were saying it was going to hit that area you had 24 hours you could’ve gotten out. You cannot be complacent or arrogant when it comes to mother nature she will humble you, God bless you all
Indeed... they call it The Cone of Uncertainty for a reason.
Agree; unpredictable Mother Nature.
oo many DeSantis voters don't want to put the blame where it belongs. The buck stops with the governor. The governor said to listen to local officials. Local officials there didn't say to evacuate (even when other counties did) until it was too late because everyone from Tampa Bay had already evacuated to all points south, meaning this area. Motels were full, gas was in short supply and traffic was a bear!
In other words it was a cluster**k and DeSantis is to blame.
@@IMSiegfried not true. You are wrong. I live in Florida and heard Ron Descantis warning us days before the hurricane hit. He said the entire SW coast should be prepared for the worst. Where' is your president right now. Joe has done nothing to help us in Florida. the future president is doing the best for Florida and you must be blind not to see it
Atleast everything shown in this video is fixable. Ft Meyers is gone, nothing to fix. So I don’t want to hear crying from this guy, he should consider himself lucky

Sending my thoughts and prayers to all the victims of this hurricane. May God comfort and build another new beginnings aftermath of this devastation.🙏
Where was he during the storm?
As a Floridian from Andrew land Cutler Ridge. Here is what we know after hundreds of years of history and a short 30 years of modern forecasting. 1. It’s basically foolish to build without the highest standards of concrete and rebar in/on the Sandbar called Florida;I think Jesus said something like that at the end of His greatest sermon. 2. Trusting forecasting to the degree of not evacuating people like nursing facilities that are not in the cone should be a crime. 3. The cost of living in a paradise needs to be measured against the benefits. I now live in Alaska, in the Paradise of Sitka. The winters are no fun. Year after year. Prayers for the affected. People live then they die. But God.
.
Best coverage.I have seen this morning. Concise, no network weatherman hysteria, just the facts and well edited. Look forward to more of your Accurate reporting
Much appreciated!
Thank you. My place in on Gulf Shore Dr. and still waiting to get inside to access. I know Lagoon Dr..
Best wishes to you.
Truly horrible. But note: the official government warning was out a good 24 hours before Ian hit that the eye would be coming ashore much further south than Tampa and that the storm surge could be as much as 12 feet and that it was a borderline cat 5. I watched all of the press conferences. I hope those people with those two-story mansions at least bothered to move valuable furniture, electronics, and other things up to their second floor. Everyone there had ample time to at least drive their vehicles out of the high danger zone, maybe even some of the boats and yachts. The damage would have been catastrophic none-the-less. I can only imagine the years it will take to restore all of that with the shortage of building materials and labor now. That has been bad for a year already. Yep. That's a nightmare scenario. All the best to Floridians in their challenging path forward to restore their beautiful state. I weathered hurricane Camille which was equally bad.
Who are you to judge 10thousand people "misunderstanding" the news.
I lived through IRMA, and at the time the messages were so much more clear! But sure, everyone is smarter after the fact and plays the wise guy
Lived in Naples almost 50 years just moved before the hurricane. One thing they are not showing is the under condo parking full of Mercedes,Bentleys, and Corvettes, which i am sure was flooded out.My grown kids are still there as are all my former customers.Good luck to all, this is devastating.
I don't understand what this has to do with car brands.
beautiful photos
I know I could have done better in post processing. But I was really in a hurry to upload this video as long as I had an internet connection. Todays video has a much better quality: czcams.com/video/LETSVdV0iE0/video.html
Property can be replaced, not you. Hope you and everyone else are staying safe and can recover quickly!
Thank you for this, it really gives us up north concerned about friends a good overview of the situation. When you get your drone working, would you be able to go a bit further south, along Gulf Shore Blvd North towards Doctors Pass, if possible? I've found nothing online that shows the damage in that specific area.
I'll try to do this. Just need to get some gas for the car - all gas stations are still closed
Most appreciated, good luck. (And, your iPhone camera reviews are great, BTW.)
my home is in that little map, and as an update, the roads we call the finger streets that jut out into the water are now canyons of tears. Furniture, rugs, appliances, all contents piled high along the narrow streets. Aftermath is the hardest part, stay strong my neighbors, those piles will be replaced, our lives can not.
.
I saw a few NY/NJ cars. I wonder how many are coming back now. 🤦♂️
People forget such things fairly quick.
The size of those houses is incredible, especially considering that most house just 2 retired people.
There are many young families living in Naples, it has grown.
True, but they get large homes when they retire, because now they can afford to invite large
groups of people, for such things and family reunions, etc. Nice homes, though.
This video was more about the hurricane
Thank goodness Fort Myers Shores was spared. Very minimal flooding there
Exciting and intresting
.
good morning everybody

Keeping all those affected in our prayers
That's not going to do anything

@@generaljamescharlesmcconvi1061 Good morning, my apologies for the late response. For 2 weeks I helped with the disaster cleanup and now I am taking the time to reply to everyone who left a comment. I am from Germany - served in the military there. Where are you stationed?

Also requesting any information on Venetian Bay area, we have a home there and are unable to find out any information on it's condition. Our hearts truly go out to all our neighbors and friends who are directly affected by this, so sad, such a beautiful place with amazing people.

Just love how I’m seeing all these vehicles in your video flooded out when they had plenty of warning and they could’ve drove them out of there along with belongings even the regular times since it’s such a shame I’m sure they’re wanting to collect on their insurance but guess what now there’s not enough vehicles for people to go around so it’s just gonna jack prices up even more wow

Thank you for the video. I am up in Michigan. But I was born and raised in Naples. Lived in Vanderbilt Beach on seagull avenue. My sister lives in Bonita springs close to the imperial River by the old elementary school. I still haven't heard from her or her husband. Does anyone know how old town Bonita fared?
Bonita Beach was hit hard as well, but not Old Town.
Best wishes . Get to know your neighbours if you don’t already, community will help you in this period . Their are no words of comfort just I am sorry 😢
I have an aunt in Naples, I really hope she didn't stay😓
Here’s the really bad news about the aftermath of storm surge! If you got surge into your home, then don’t think that you can simply dry out your house! Black mold will start to form inside the walls of your house after water damage. Those invisible mold spores are extremely toxic to breath in high concentrations. That black mold can cause all sorts of serious respiratory issues in people.
The only way to remove that mold is to hire repair crews to completely gut the walls of the home to get rid of the mold, and then rebuild the walls. Unfortunately, after a major storm repair crews and contractors might be booked out in your area for months. Your house will likely be completely unlivable until you can get the mold problem repaired. It’s just too dangerous once high concentrations of mold start forming in the walls. Unfortunately, in a tropical climate like Naples I absolutely guarantee that mold in the walls will be a major problem!
On a personal note, my heart goes out to everyone impacted by that horrible hurricane. Stay strong for one another! I know that things might seem really dark right now. However, believe me, life will eventually move on.
I hope the officials are going to inform all effected home owners accordingly
I'm due to fly out to work at a local golf club nearby from the UK, should I just leave it a weeks or fly in as planned.
As of tomorrow you will have no problems getting gas and groceries, so you could come as planned. If you can postpone it for a week, I probably would recommend that. Because by then power will be restored everywhere and life will be closer to normal.
@@ParadiseBizz Thanks so much for the reply, it's Old Collier Golf Cub I'm coming to, will the course be playable to the members do you think ??
@@Itsthejourneynotthedestination Oh, it's pretty close to the beach. This really depends on their elevation, drainage and how bad it was affected. You should give them a call before flying in
Living near or on the ocean is a wonderful luxury -- until it is not. The devastation is just heart-wrenching to see. People need to understand the consequences of where they live and how to mitigate as best they can. FL is basically at sea level and built on a swamp. Those living inland probably never believed they could be adversely affected but now they know, sadly. Whoever thought that living in a tin rectangle in FL was a good idea? The homes you showed in Naples are beautiful and now they pay the price for that beauty. I live in New England but have been to Naples a few times, including Tin City. It will take some time for everyone to recover and I hope people can. So sorry for all of you.
.
Do you have power again in Naples?
Noy yet. The hurricane partially ripped all the power lines out, they all will need to be replaced. This can take days/weeks
@@ParadiseBizz im so sorry! My mom lives in Naples (luckily she wasn’t there when this happened) and I’m there often, so this really breaks my heart and I’m sorry for the people who couldn’t leave.. wishing you all the best!!

I have not made it down there yet. Will check it out in the next few days
Living in Florida and not prepared or expected a hurricane... slow clap
Yes, everyone LOVES those smart advises - after the fact. Keep it coming
Two things stop me from moving to SF, hurricanes and bugs!!! Lot to overcome.
The state just added another obstacle, mandatory flood insurance, that may or may not pay
when we need it!!! Omg 😳😢
FEMA's low and moderate risk flood zones - those outside the SFHA - are those that begin with the letters “X,” “B,” or “C.” Flood insurance is not required within these zones.
I 75 and all the highways heading out were at a gridlock. You have no idea how bad it is down here. Not everyone can afford to just pick up and leave. It takes money to do that.
Exactly, you need money for gas, food, and the overpriced hotels/motes up North who take advantage of the situation. Been there in 2017, spent a small fortune just to get away with my cat. When I came back I still was 2 weeks without power and gas. So yes, not everyone can actually afford to evacuate
How is the area around 7th Ave N?
That day I received about 40 requests to check on certain areas or even on people's homes. All strangers to me, so I focused on disaster clean-up
What about Naples Grade Resort and Hotel?

Unfortunately everything that close to the beach was heavily affected.
Looks like Naples Park area (water side), then Vanderbilt Surf Colony I by DelNor Wiggins, and then Regatta at Vanderbilt Beach. Thanks for posting. I have a place 1.4 miles north...and we got zero storm surge. I just don't get it. Thank you for this video!!
What?? I live inside Wiggins Pass 2.5 miles inland and we got a 11ft surge!!
We are just south of Audubon Country Club. West of Vanderbilt. NO surge. Got to be elevation related - or we live in a bubble! Crazy! (also protected by mangroves, I think they saved us.)
@@daveshope4910 ps bottom floor of condo building is at 12'-8". We lost a boardwalk on the intercoastal, but zero damage to unit.
It was truly a bit random. I have clients in Beachwalk and they got nothing. Other clients, a little North, same distance to the water, 7 foot high storm surge. It is true, vegetation was helping a lot to protect
Very sorry for your losses. I am a former Rhode Islander and a survivor of the blizzard of 1978. I was commuter to my nursing school at that time which was a 45 minutes drive to my parent's home where I was living. The snow forecast for that day of the blizzard was snow showers starting late in the afternoon or early evening, and since I had morning classes I decided to go to school. I looked out the window of my school just before 11:00 am and saw the snow coming down at at good clip which was surprising since that was not the forecast for the snow to start so early so I decided to skip my next class and head home. By the time I got to Providence a 20 minute drive into my 45 minute drive home the snow was already a foot deep and cars were stuck all over the highway. I managed to maneuver between two stuck cars to get to an exit to get off the highway in an attempt to take back roads home which I figured would have less stuck traffic.. The snow was as deep on these back roads but fortunately no traffic. I drove home literally 5 miles an hour
and miraculously made it two hours later. My father was not so lucky as he got stuck on the highway for a week. But fortunately there was a restaurant near where he was stuck that stayed opened to provide food and shelter to those who could get to it, and during that time my father and others made trips back to the highway many times to assist other victims trapped in their cars to get them to safety. We were both lucky to have survived this storm which which blind sided all those weather professionals reporting on it. From that experience just before each winter would roll in we never left home without a shovel, sand, heavy clothing, boots, water, non perishable food, medicine, and other survival equipment that would enhance our ability to survive if we were stuck in another blizzard because no matter how good humans are in their efforts to predict the behaviors of mother nature she has a mind of her own and can change it very quickly. I am now a central Florida resident and am lucky my community and area suffered no damage. My prayers go out to all Florida residents who were not as fortunate as my husband and I.
I remember that day. I lived near Brown University and, had gotten a call to come to work. I knew that I'd have to walk, so while getting dressed, I put plastic leaf bags on my legs with rubber bands, then my boots which came to my knees. Walking through Providence, I started seeing people getting stuck. This was before cell phones, remember?.... I flagged down a police officer, showed him my I.D. and told him that I had to get to Cranston. He got me to the Prov/Cranston line, and then a Trooper gave me a ride the rest of the way to the ACI, where I worked. Was stuck there for two weeks but, didn't mind after I saw my next check. Back then, people stuck together.
I totally agree with you they even said that Dade, Broward ,West Palm Beach would not see nothing and at the end we had Gust winds rain and some of us did experience minimal damage they were WRONG and they were LATE In their prediction shame on the weather channel😊however Floridian are resilient we will rebuild like we did in Andrew
Absolutely devastating but judging by the vehicles these people are obviously better off financially than a lot of others for the road to recovery. Still heartbreaking.

Idk why people underestimated Ian. He was a monster storm. He didn’t hurt us inland like Irma did tho. Irma dismantled my county 60 miles inland. You can’t get more inland than where I’m at. She tore us down up sideways…Ian was bigger. I also believe Ian was just as strong as Irma at landfall. Irma kinda spared the coastline where Ian did no such thing he ravaged the coastline before turning on the central part of Florida. The rain started and never stopped, with Irma it was wind wind rain rain wind wind wind wind wind wind wind…She demolished our trees & powerlines. Irma in my mind was the holy shit moment and I went thru 2004 here. But they were 2 separate storms with 2 very different damage ideas…
Hi Jen, Irma was here in Sept 2017, at the time I was living in Naples Park. And yes, it was like you said, Rain, Wind, Wind, Wind....
Serious Code Violation 5:39, 1 nail for each connector crazy
Blaming the media is weak, I live in Maine and what I saw on tv told me that anyone living on or near a barrier island needed to secure/protect their property and get out
You're a very smart man, Andy. Actually after the fact, everyone is.
The messages of the media were not as clear as they were 2017 when Irma hit. It was not just me, tens of thousands of people stayed here, the very same people who evacuated in September 2017.
It’s crazy how they was complaining about no money to evacuate but then look at the houses and cars all hella expensive, makes no since of you ain’t got money to evacuate then your house and cars should not look like that and by that I mean you can tell all these people have money they was just to lazy and uneducated of hurricanes
This is one way to see it - if you have tunnel vision. The truth is the 75% of home owners in Naples are absentee owners from other States or Countries. On top Were you here? On top 10thousand people "misunderstood" the news.

It is really good advice that you posted here
No match box houses here. Hence very little damage. Who could have thought?
Maybe the first impression was misleading, there are major damages. This storm surge even cracked concrete blocks.

As the atmosphere heats up more and more due to our fossil foolish ways, we are going to be experiencing more of these types of storms and weather events of all types. You'd think we'd be hot to stop what we are doing that is producing these effects and working our butts off to turn it all around. But, no, business as usual comes first right up until the end of life on our planet. We really are a stupid species. Sad.

The insurance rates, already skyrocketing before Ian are going to be astronomical for anyone who has to have flood and hurricane insurance. We may see an entire collapse of the insurance market here in Florida ( it was already in serious trouble) Everyone will be effected. This will be the most costly hurricane in state history, perhaps national history.
Next on the menu: Planetary Hospice, Managed Retreat, American Human Habitat Loss. Irreversible abrupt climate change is already here.
with almost 60,000 cars flushed away, yes, the rates increased so much

That’s why they call it the weather. Wether it hits Tampa or wether it hits Ft Myers, nobody knows. Until it happens.
And whether or not you learn to spell whether !!

It's kinda strange to hear a leaf blower running while seeing boats in yards.
That's what I thought when I was filming
There were plenty of warnings. They issued evacuation orders for every location seen in this video except the Five Guys. The newscasts for the preceding 3 days all indicated that Naples was well within the realm of possibility for being hit, and Ian was 150 miles across, so there was bound to be some outer bands of the storm to hit us. I live three blocks from everywhere in this video, and received no damage except some damp indoor/outdoor carpeting outside. .
My brother has a place in South Naples, just off the bay. The water came up high enough to flood nearly every house on his block....except his. He had sufficient elevation to escape the flooding. His dock was destroyed, however, and that will set him back at least 20 grand. And he considers himself one of the lucky ones. Honestly, this is going to be the "new normal". Storms that enter the Gulf will become more intense, due to the increasing temperatures of the water, and the rising sea levels. Two absolutely devastating hurricanes in only 5 years. It's a nightmare. Even worse, few people carried flood insurance, meaning that rebuilding will eat up their savings (if they have any), or even force them to move away permanently.

Welcome down to Florida yall 🤪 its been happening for millions of years 🤏
You seem very amused from other people's sufferings
California is nice and sunny
...and quaky
I respect your take on the situation, but you cannot 'blame' the media, weather forecasters ect. ect. Having gone through more than a dozen named storms/hurricanes here in Naples, evacuation is very difficult for many people due to the unpredictable nature of tropical weather and the time line required to leave without being stranded on a highway in a traffic jam in the middle of a major storm. Should have, could have, does'nt matter at all it's up to the individual to decide what plan they follow. We will rebuild and deal with the next one when and if it comes along.
I did not blame the media. All I wanted to bring across is that the messages of the media were not as clear as they were 2017 when Irma hit. It was not just me, thousands of people stayed here, the very same people who evacuated in September 2017.
I hope people are there to help the people who need help. Floridians help is on the way.
I spent some quality time (weeks) with disaster clean up
