Been wanting to see this again for years, thanks for posting. This mirrored my 1983 in so many ways, college and signing on, jeans, T-Shirt & black bikers jacket were my clothes as well, no wonder it hit home with me. I’ve seen bootlegs for sale on the internet but haven’t risked buying, but maybe now I will. There were thousands of us ‘Tuckers’ leaving school in ‘82 and this series was frighteningly accurate. Phil Redmond’s observation was the truth.

@@user-John666 it was like Grange Hill tracked our school years, year-for-year and Tucker’s Luck was the point of life after school. College, YTS, an apprenticeship before the government scrapped them or the dole. My friends who went to the local Grammar school were expected to stay on 2 years at 6th form to do A-levels, then go to uni for 3 years. Back then only the 11+ pass kids were expected to get degrees. Now it’s a standard goal for everyone and further education is like part of the corporate sector!

@@thedrumdoctor Very true mate, pretty much nobody I knew went to Uni, it just wasn’t the done thing. Possibly some random course at college or something via the YOP but Uni? For posh kids or swots. Mind you, it actually meant something different to go to University then, now as you say it’s just the expected thing, regardless of academic leanings. I think the way it was for us prepared you better for the ups and downs of life and the realisation that not everyone is equal and there are losers in life. Cheers.

Phil Redmond was obsessed with giving out loads of nicknames. He did it in Brookside too. Ducksy and Growler Rogers. Most lads at school were just called by their surname by their mates usually adding a bit ......e.g. Smithy in G&S !

Also it’s sad to hear of the death of Gwyneth Powell R.I.P the actress’s who played Mrs McClusky what a lovely lady and also a great actress she was, Gwyneth played in multi character roles in a lot of tv series, other than the most popular Grange Hill.

This was a couple of years before my own experiences of having left school with nothing much to do. The last exams were at the beginning of June, and the rest of the month as well as July and part of August seemed to fly by on the, 'extended summer holiday.' I hadn't a clue what to do with myself, job-wise. Ended up on a YTS for the next couple of years. It gelt great having your own money to spend, until you soon learned just how far 27.30 went, in the real world.
