  • I visited St Luke's Church early on a Saturday morning so I could get some great drone footage of it whilst the city was sleeping.
I have also shared a little bit about the history of the church along with a stunning recording taken by a BBC sound engineer during the Liverpool Blit in May 1941.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Brilliant video Mr Drone. The audio brought the whole video together. The sound of the bombs the planes and explosions gave an atmosphere of what it must of been like the night the church was destroyed. I could almost picture the flames. Once again brilliant 👏

I lived though that period when the Nazi 'planes flew up Cardigan Bay turning right at Barmouth and as there was no radar they followed the rivers Mawdach and Dee to Merseyside. Merseysiders had only 20 minutes warning provided by the Royal Observer Corps via the plotting station in Caernarfon Castle dungeon. The RAF had huts built by my father on high ground along the route with a direct phone link to Caernarfon. My father volunteered to take command of that area and staff the huts with full time and part timers such as teachers, shop keepers etc. During the worst 10 days of bombing there were 4000 deaths but without the ROC warnings that could have been ten times worse. Thank you Mr Drone for reviving those memories.

Greetings from Georgia Nick, This video brought back many memories I used to walk past this church on most days depending on what route I took to work in Jamaica St when I was an apprentice in the 1960s. I used to wonder when they would get around to demolishing it, luckily that didn't happen, it is a great memorial to the people who lost their lives and who worked in the city during the May Blitz, my Mam & Dad included who worked in an arms factory just streets away from the church.

Nick FYI The church has an ancient foundation, preceding the Norman conquest, and a church on the site is recorded in the Domesday Book. This church was replaced in 1766 by a Georgian chapel. This was replaced in turn by the present church that was built between 1869 and 1871.It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin. The initial estimate was for £10,000, but the cost rose to £12,000 (equivalent to £1,140,000 in 2020), and was paid for by the 4th Earl of Sefton. It provided seating for 650 people. The stone used for its construction was taken from the Earl's own quarries.
