Me too. I went to San Gorgonio High in the 70s. I worked at Harris Company. I can't believe how beautiful it was in the early 60 70 and the 80 it started to go down. I had a great childhood but the gangs ruined San Bernardino. Once the Air Force base fell. It hurts to see. So much trash. I live in Illinois in an area I see no gang. Pay big. But it's so bad.
I would pay a lot of money to be able to walk around inside the old Harris building again. Some of my most joyous memories from my childhood are of in that mall and that store.
I second that. I remember shopping there with my mom all thru the 80's. Harris had its own smell, and I can still remember those brown and copper colored hexagon tiles that covered the floor, and the magic of walking out of Harris only to enter straight into the mall...
I always saw Santa there. would buy my Dads hush puppy shoes hankie and shirts there. I buy wallets and Christmas Pins there too. candy counter was great.
I grew up in San Bernardino and remember when the Central City Mall opened. We often shopped at Harris' prior to the mall being built, and it was always a great time. They even had a lunch counter at Harris' which was excellent. In the early seventies the mall was vibrant, full of interesting shops and full of shoppers. Odd little stores like Red Eye (later renamed 'Ped Eye' to avoid the intentional drug inference), The Gap (early Gap, very hippy-ish), and others. We used to skateboard though the Radisson hotel parking structure. One thing the video gets wrong is that the Inland Center Mall actually pre-dates the Central City Mall. The Inland Center Mall had some interesting things as well such as a game arcade in the basement (Flipper Flapper Fan Factory and Fun Company), a gingerbread bakery, and a Licorice Pizza record store. Good times. So sad to see it all in this state now.
I worked at Central City Mall in 1975 and 1976, at the Woolworth store. For those of you that are young, Woolworth stores were much like a Kmart store. The movie theater was across the mall from our Woolworth store. People used to come in all the time and buy their candy from us cuz it was cheaper. They would hide it in their purse or pockets and go into the theater. LOL.
Yes there was a ferris wheel and a choo choo train i got the pleasure of riding both! I grew up in the 90s so I only knew it as the Carousel Mall! Will forever be missed!

Not sure it’s this mall but I remember me and my friends family going to mall with a Carousel but I remember the mall having 1 other dark ride and it was pretty cheesy.
My Grandma would take me there as a little girl in the 70s. My memories at that time was getting a chocolate dipped ice cream bar rolled in peanuts with the ice cream stick poked through a pleated paper cup that would catch any chopped peanuts that might fall off. It was Central City Mall at that time. I remember Christmas decorations throughout and you could hear over the speaker. ..Cen-tral City Malll 🎶 ..their jingle they played. They had an actual pet shop where I loved to see the puppies and kittens. When I was 10, my dad took me to see ET the movie. Later in high school, I helped do inventory at Harris’. You could take the elevator to the Mezzanine level, which I’d never heard of before. Fancy!😂. Crazy to see what it looks like now. It used to be so full of life.
Been moved out of San Bernardino for over 30 years. I remember Chess King had all the cool men's clothing back in the day! I spent alot of time in there. I don't remember the name of the surf shop that was upstairs by Harris's. That was my go to. I used to by skateboards at that skate shop in the parking lot across the street from Luvs. I am so bummed that it's all gone. I'm 51 now. I went on my first date at the theater to see "Back to the Future". I'm at a loss how fucked up Berdoo is now.
The 1996 lawsuit was regarding the expansion of the Inland Center Mall. It was already built in the 70s. It was expanding to include a fourth anchor store which ended up being May Co, Robinson May, now Macy's.

I remember trick or treating here as a kid. I barely remember the Radisson when that was open also. The part of downtown has so much potential! I know some plans are to keep the Harris building and turn it into lofts/apartments and tear down the mall and build a Main Street type of area with shops retail and apartments. And having the California theatre and the movie theater right across the street is a nice addition. I hope San Bernardino moves quickly with the downtown area would be nice to move back and live there someday. I miss it. Just needs more entertainment/nightlife and art lol nice video!

I was told that, the pension funds from the police and fire department, helped to destroy San Bernardino. They refuse to work out a deal with city officials. Shameful. San Bernardino was once named The All American City.

A correction for you: the Inland Center Mall wasn't being built in 1996 as you stated, but had actually opened in 1966, making it even older than the Central City / Carousel Mall by 6 years. 1996 was about the time all the anchor-wars were going on over there, as well as some remodeling, which is likely what triggered those law-suits. Just FYI. Absolutely loved your video, brought back so many memories of my childhood, back when it was in it's glory days. Thanks for making this.

I used tolive in San Bernardino I was there prior to the closing of the mall that was less than maybe five or six stores in there and when the bank was there when the city went into bankruptcy in 2012 in prior to that the downtown area was starting to die out and when they built a new Transit center that's two blocks south of the mall they said oh that's going to help bring bus or bring people into the area I did not do that even with the with the extension of the Metrolink train now going to the transit center it's a shame to see that mall in the downtown area slowly dying off even when they started up their own XPS bus service that goes through the downtown area up to Cal State Sanford you know they said all this is going to vitalize downtown area is going to bring stores and businesses back to the area and buy likes them all that has happened the last time I was out in San Bernardino was in 2019 and it's just got more and more everything so slowly businesses are leaving the downtown area it's sad to see that that the city can't do anything about finalizing the area that would you sit in your video that was the plans are 50 years old they need to change their plans to City council on the mayonnaise really think about what they're what they want to do how to buy the lights downtown area how to bring it back to life because it's sad to see that San Bernardino the city is just basically dying now because there's nothing left there's no jobs there people are struggling trying to find work I did when I was living there for over 6 years I couldn't find workout in the city of San Bernardino I had to go outside to city limits to go look for work like in Fontana rancho Cucamonga and I wasn't having any such luck so I ended up coming back home to Los Angeles you been back ever since
this was one of my childhood malls. i can't believe how much of the structure of the mall and surrounding areas is still standing. getting inside would of course be sweet but this video stands on its own. even in the early 90s when we'd go down there, the entire area around the mall was already dead. there was literally nothing around except those government offices. i'm glad you devoted a lot of screen time to the city hall, it was designed by cesar pelli and knowing san bernardino they are probably wanting to tear it down. i swear even back in the day every other year the city would come up with some crazy "revitalization" scheme that was so fantastical it was obviously never going to happen. the only thing that had even modest success was a cinemastar theater and even that eventually closed.
Yea the plans I dug up when doing research were pretty outlandish and massive. Somewhat unrealistic. I had a part in the first cut of this video talking about the movie theater, I had to cut it for time. And yes! Those city buildings are beautiful! What a cool mall to grow up with! I went inside the carousel mall towards the end around 2013 when I moved to SB and really love the lay out even though there were only a few stores. I thought to myself why would they build Inland center mall so close and why that cross or X designed.

I looked at your videos looks like your a local of la suburbs? Idk but you should check out eagle rock plaza and puente hills mall I grew up there moved away in 2005. I've gone back and wow the mall is different it's dying. It's impossible to find anything of the Early 2000s it's either 80s orr now they had remodeled it with Koi ponds in like 2000 but seems like they took it all away. And eagle rock plaza had a rocky start from the beginning because of kidnappings of teenage girls. That one isn't as lonely but the only thing keeping it alive is target and a fish market inside.
They should rebuilt this mall again so that way they can more money they should put safety Precautions like cop or good Security to because to honest the inland mall is so small and little bit of store doesn't even look a mall
I caught the link for this on the Dead Mall discord. It's really cool to see this history get documented. I'm a second gen West Los Angeles kid. Since I was born in 1970, I lived some of the histroy you're documenting. The Valley has ir's own vibe, definately a 70s vibe. The 70s is when Los Angeles was the place to be. Everyone was moving there, and the Valley had to house everyone who could no longer afford the West Side. That included almost anyone with kids. The Valley is still so new the buildings kind of have a sense of Innosense and promise to them. But San Bernadino did not. San Bernadino basically had a reputation of a place where a bunch of weird white people lived, who didn't fit in. If you're from Los Angeles, Fontana was where the metro area kinda ended, and beyond that, was San Bernadino. I always thought that was a place where people lived who could not make it in Los Angeles. Like the Sherrif who couldn't make it in LA County, or the Law Librarian, or the Register Recorder. You name it, San Bernardino was a strictly C-Tier place. It's proximity to Los Angeles only pointed out the striking and miserable lack of resemblence to the City of Angeles. I think in China, or Spain, or Canada, they simply would have cut the utilities and paid everyone to move. But here, we continue to pretend that this legacy of strange white people who never fit in should be protected, and it's not. That whole city is an embassasment. Bakersfield's city motto should be, "At least were not San Bernadino".
No, I don't agree with you.. you're wrong. My family and friends grew up in San Bernardino County. We had a great time living in this county. The people were friendly and it was a clean area. We had family living all over the county. Colton, Redlands , Bloomington, Fontana, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Rialto. When Kaiser Steel was in business, it was. The main large employee for so many people in inland empire. San Bernardino was once named the all American City ! You don't know nothing about the history of San Bernardino County. Most of the white people left because , it started to go down hill. They started leaving after Kaiser steel closed... That was years ago.

If anything, the high cost of living in L.A. spurred people to move east to San Berdoo, but unfortunately, huge employers like Kaiser Steel (Fontana) and Norton AFB (San B.) closing made things tough. Homes are hella expensive, crime is out of control, and corrupt politicians have destroyed it. Inland Center Mall is facing a similar situation as the Carousel. Sears is gone and alot of their anchor stores have closed. And the recent pandemic has helped the demise of the mall.
Inland center mall is dead!!! Nothing but mom and pop stores only things that are left holding that mall are footlocker/ all the shoe stores. It’s a very small mall. It willl soon be abandoned next as it’s already lost all of its big anchor stores. Most ppl in San Bernardino either go to Tyler mall or Ontario Mills.
I’m surprised it’s still open. I bought my first pair of Chuck Taylors at the Journey’s there recently. As of now, a lot of stores are beginning to close, and last time I went there the JC Penny had a huge clearance sale if that means anything. I’m surprised people still go there.

I worked there at Wards for some years before we got laid off and closed in 2001. Also shopped there for years. Sad to see it go.

I did a drive by a few days ago. Havent started demolition at all.

I caught the link for this on the Dead Mall discord. It's really cool to see this history get documented. I'm a second gen West Los Angeles kid. Since I was born in 1970, I lived some of the histroy you're documenting. The Valley has ir's own vibe, definately a 70s vibe. The 70s is when Los Angeles was the place to be. Everyone was moving there, and the Valley had to house everyone who could no longer afford the West Side. That included almost anyone with kids. The Valley is still so new the buildings kind of have a sense of Innosense and promise to them. But San Bernadino did not. San Bernadino basically had a reputation of a place where a bunch of weird white people lived, who didn't fit in. If you're from Los Angeles, Fontana was where the metro area kinda ended, and beyond that, was San Bernadino. I always thought that was a place where people lived who could not make it in Los Angeles. Like the Sherrif who couldn't make it in LA County, or the Law Librarian, or the Register Recorder. You name it, San Bernardino was a strictly C-Tier place. It's proximity to Los Angeles only pointed out the striking and miserable lack of resemblence to the City of Angeles. I think in China, or Spain, or Canada, they simply would have cut the utilities and paid everyone to move. But here, we continue to pretend that this legacy of strange white people who never fit in should be protected, and it's not. That whole city is an embassasment. Bakersfield's city motto should be, "At least were not San Bernadino".
No, I don't agree with you.. you're wrong. My family and friends grew up in San Bernardino County. We had a great time living in this county. The people were friendly and it was a clean area. We had family living all over the county. Colton, Redlands , Bloomington, Fontana, San Bernardino, Loma Linda, Rialto. When Kaiser Steel was in business, it was. The main large employee for so many people in inland empire. San Bernardino was once named the all American City ! You don't know nothing about the history of San Bernardino County. Most of the white people left because , it started to go down hill. They started leaving after Kaiser steel closed...

Your opinion is crap, dude. I was born and raised there, and it was always a melting pot of ALL walks of life, not just "weird whites", lol. If anything, the high cost of living in L.A. spurred people to move east to San Berdoo, but unfortunately, huge employers like Kaiser Steel (Fontana) and Norton AFB (San B.) closing made things tough. Homes are hella expensive, crime is out of control, and corrupt politicians have destroyed it. There's still GREAT people that live here - blacks, whites, Asians, LatinX, people from all over the world, doing their best to get by and survive. Shits hard. But don't knock the Dino, if you don't know what you're talking about

There's already a Costco nearby on 10 freeway.

What is the Inland Center Mall like? So sad so many malls have died, rest in piece.
Inland Center Mall is facing a similar situation as the Carousel. Sears is gone and alot of their anchor stores have closed. And the recent pandemic has helped the demise of the mall.
Inland center mall is dead!!! Nothing but mom and pop stores only things that are left holding that mall are footlocker/ all the shoe stores. It’s a very small mall. It willl soon be abandoned next as it’s already lost all of its big anchor stores. Most ppl in San Bernardino either go to Tyler mall or Ontario Mills.
I’m surprised it’s still open. I bought my first pair of Chuck Taylors at the Journey’s there recently. As of now, a lot of stores are beginning to close, and last time I went there the JC Penny had a huge clearance sale if that means anything. I’m surprised people still go there.
