@@xoxo-bu2cu Haha. Catherine of Aragon died with, reportedly, a 'black heart', which is probably cancer, which wasn't helped by the disgrace and humiliation she suffered under Henry's hand. Due to Henry's cruelty, she was essentially in home arrest for the rest of her life. To add salt to her wound, she was unable to see her daughter for the rest of her life because big ol' Henry VIII forbade it. I think it's safe to say that CofA suffered a miserable life and a miserable death because of Henry.
Actually I think as far as his wives go, Anne of Cleves Got off pretty easy. Not saying that she didn't have any hardships because obviously being rejected for your looks and only being married for 6 to 7 months to someone must have just felt really weird
(Even though Anne of Cleves was pretty sheltered from what I understand)
But like I said she got off pretty easy especially considering that when the divorce was offered to her she was also offered a generous amount of riches in exchange for accepting it.
Not to mention she actually became pretty good friends with Henry after the divorce.

Not that it actually matters, but fun fact: Holbien was known for his accurate portraits. He was known for not being particularly flattering to his painting subjects.
So that portrait is likely very accurate to what she actually looked like.
It's just that Henry dressed up in peasant clothes, burst into Anna's room unannounced and kissed her. She was engaged, didn't speak English, and hadn't heard the stories that his behavior was based on, so she was rightfully upset with this random old smelly guy macking on her when she was spoken for.
So he decided that because she didn't respond well, he didn't want to marry her, and he came up with the excuse that "she's ugly" and paid her off.
They first meeting was a BIG failure
It was because of this why he said "I like her not, I like her not". Because she didn't like his courtly games. Ridiculous. How could this obese man who smelled of rot tell anyone that they were ugly?
So she was actually divorced because she was sexually assaulted, not because she didn’t look like her picture??

She hadn't married him at the time, and he wanted to back out, but the marriage was a part of a treaty with the Duke of Cleaves to protect from the Roman Catholics. He couldn't risk the treaty without fear of being overthrown. Creating the CoE had the Catholic church _that_ pissed.
So with all that in mind, he married her and then got the marriage annulled 6 months later after a large settlement to Anne.
Also, while reading more into the subject, I saw something that claimed that she'd just ignored him- not actually gotten upset with him and he didn't like it. I didn't look into it far enough to be able to tell you the historical consensus on what happened.
I'm not sure which paints him as more of an asshole: that he didn't want to marry someone because she was angry about sexual assault, or that he didn't want to marry someone because she didn't fall head over heels for him when he kissed her in disguise.
At least in the first story, you could argue that she may not have wanted to marry the creep because of the bad first impression. In the second story, he's just being a petty brat.
let me add something. She was german. the language may have been more elegant back then, but let me say, as a german myself, yeah if she went off on him verbally that must have soundes like a demonic incantation to an englishman.
Anne was the one that REALLY survived!
She lived the rest of her life in wealth without a man telling her what to do nor worrying about death by child birth nor beheading.

Fun fact: Anne and Henry actually got along pretty well, they talked in Latin, when they were divorced she was declared The King's Beloved Sister.
The portrait story is likely untrue! Holben was under orders to be as accurate as possible and not to flatter the sisters. The problem was actually her personality: Anne didn't really fawn over Henry. He'd once been a very handsome man, and his wives had been affectionate to him. When he first met Anne she didn't recognize him as the king and as such, she didn't really pay any mind to him. She also preferred the German fashions which were often considered unflattering and were much more conservative than those worn in western Europe.
There is a very interesting theory regarding the annulment though, and it may hold some water: By this point, it was pretty well known that being Henry's wife was a dangerous position. But it was also pretty clear that Henry had a type. Supposedly Anne made a point to be very dour, to dress conservatively, and to act uneducated as a way of losing the king's favor without making him angry. She agreed to the annulment suspiciously fast. After she was declared Henry's sister she suddenly was much more friendly, dressed in the English fashions, and knew English! A little suspicious. It worked out really well for her, though, she never had to go back to her brother who was terrible.
Also just because it's my favorite: There's one very notable fight between Anne and Henry. Henry did not want his daughters Elizabeth and Mary to visit for Easter. Anne made a scene and demanded in broken English that the girls be allowed to come because they were her family now. Anne actually maintained a relationship with both Mary and Elizabeth until her death, they're both mentioned in her will.

Fun fact: Anne of Cleves is the only wife of Henry that Mary Tudor recognized as queen. When her mother was banished, she vowed that she would never accept another woman as the Queen of England, but she respected Anne for how educated and modest she was. Nice!

My aunt is really into the ancestor thing, so she decided "I'm gonna try to find out our ancestors" AND MARY TUDOR IS MY ANCESTOR, neat right? I still need to ask her how we're related to her.
Actually, Anne was never called ugly and actually fairly beautiful. The reason Henry divorced her is because she humiliated him because he wanted to mock a fairy tale and dress as a peasant and make her fall in love than reveal himself, so he snuck into her castle while she was watching a bear fight set in her honor from her balcony, completely forgetting that she was German and had no idea of the French fairy tale. So he ran up and kissed her, so she hit him and went back to watching her bear fight.

It's sad because from what I read in an article "I like her not" by Vintage News, the real Anne was still like. Heartbroken because she wanted to be a queen. She apparently asked Henry to take her back after Howard was beheaded. And she didn't want to go back home, because she was scared if her brother's anger. So yeah, she had her palace, but she wasn't that happy.

Do you think that Henry was aware of the existence of makeup? I mean, if she's getting a courtly portrait done, chances are she's going to be done to the 9's, but when relaxing in her own room away from the public eye she isn't going to be so overly done up. So really, this is most likely just another case of a man being dumb enough to think that a woman clearly wearing makeup will just look like that all the time.
