  • The PlayStation 2 rightly has a place in a lot of people's hearts, it's a fantastic console and it's still accessible with a massive library of games. In this video I talk about why it's one of my favourite consoles with my recommended games to start off your collection!

    Always worth mentioning that most modern TVs still have component sockets, which the PS2 supports, you'll only get 480p or 576i but on an OLED the PS2 still looks pretty decent. Or if you're luck enough to have a high end 1080p tv that still has a glorious scart socket, then you're in retro heaven - just make sure to have a dedicated scart, not one of those 3 into 1 converter things.

    • @Lydgendary
      @Lydgendary  Před měsícem +5

      Yes good point! I started off with a PS2 and a scart plug on my (older) flat screen TV. It's not as good as CRT but if you don't have the space or want to invest in a CRT TV it's perfect to start off with

      There now exist adapters which you plug directly into the ps2, and plug the hdmi cable into the adapter. Draws power from the usb port of the ps2. Very handy.

    • @hugevibez
      @hugevibez Před měsícem +9

      Those internal scalers are really bad, its best to just get a proper upscaler. The problem with most PS2 games are interlaced, though you can force progressive mode with freemcboot*/gsm . Having something that does proper deinterlacing can have some mind blowing results, but devices run expensive (retroGEM HDMI mod, retrothink5x or 4k). For a bit more budget oriented options retrothink also has their 2x devices (I think these are like 80 bucks, not cheap but definitely worthwhile), which get you 90% of the way there. At any rate the results will be a lot better than using any TV scaler or cheapo hdmi converters. Just for specifically PS2 you kind of want one a bit better due to the advanced deinterlacing options.
      For more information My Life in Gaming has made hours and hours of video explaining all sort of minutae about analog video as related to gaming, though some of those episode are a bit old now.

      @SoundToxin Před měsícem +4

      In my experience (in the USA) modern TVs don't have any analog inputs anymore. Have to keep around some older displays or do HDMI mods to keep older consoles easily playable with good quality. You can sometimes find 1080p displays with both analog and digital inputs at auctions for good deals. I got a large NEC P462 monitor at an auction that has basically every port/signal known to man (BNC adapters needed for some) and will be hanging on to it for dear life.

    • @MysticGargoyle
      @MysticGargoyle Před měsícem +5

      @@hugevibez Yeah sadly the PS2 doesn't look very good without a good deinterlacer on a flatscreen, it's one of those consoles that looked the best in RGB on the later CRT models. I use the Retrotink 5x from Mike, and it looks very good on my OLED. But it's a costly route to go with linedoublers and scalers, anything below the OSSC is not worth it IMO. The quality will suffer a lot, it's then better to find a cheap CRT instead.

    The ps2 xbox and gamecube era is possibly the best. I have been collecting for the gamecube and early 360 since those were the ones I primarily grew up with. I had a PS2 as well since my parents managed to get me a used one for dirt cheap. One of my favorite PS2 games is Dragon Quest 8... or just Dragon Quest as it was known in Europe 😂

    • @Lydgendary
      @Lydgendary  Před měsícem +6

      I do agree! I think something that the following generations missed is that experimental and fun element to gaming. The PS3 and 360 felt a bit more like a money making machine with far too many FPS games.

      @@heart_of_a_daedra3649 I do think that we are overall in the best time for gaming. The only thing that is lacking is that the Triple A games that feel larger than life are really below expectations right now. Like, young kids now won't get to experience games being released at the technological peak at the time that are legit amazing, with few exceptions like Elden Ring etc.

    • @BigmanDogs
      @BigmanDogs Před měsícem +2

      @@Lydgendary I think the reason why games back then were so fun was that the budgets were low enough for them to take risks, whilst still feeling like technological marvels since that was the best graphics we had ever seen.

    Best console generation IMO. If you were lucky enough to own them all you really were winning.
    PS2 was the workhorse, all 3rd party games were released on it and it had great exclusives and the most accessible.
    Gamecube was like the weird artist, it didn't release a lot but the games it did release were all incredible.
    Xbox was the online/multimedia beast. Transformed the way we gamed with online and using it as a PC living room media player.
    Man, what a time I had back then...

      But you're right, the sixth gen systems all have a reason to own them, unlike now where PS5 games are also on PS4 and PC, or Xbox games also being on PC and other platforms.

    Most games going between $10-15-20ish in box (with the manual usually) is generous for those wanting to build a library in an affordable manner.

    Particular games I'd add to the pile are:
    the Crystal Dynamics era Tomb Raider games (fav version of Lara Croft)
    the absolutely stellar TimeSplitters games
    the Lord of the rings games that sit firmly atop the movie tie-in list.
    Both Gran Turismo and NFS peaked on the PS2, as did Metal Gear. One game I don't see a lot of people talk about was Rumble Racing, a kind of hybrid between NASCAR and a kart racer with lots of big stuntable jumps and powerups.

    I'd have to disagree with the FOMO premise of getting a PS2 "before it's too late". PS2 consoles have pretty much been flatlined for years, in terms of pricing - because there are so many of them (158 million to be exact). Don't REALLY think the needle is going to be moving anytime soon. Games - yes - depending can be VERY pricey. Marvel vs Capcom 2 STILL commands a hefty price tag. But, MOST games are dirty cheap.
    Lydgendary...your videos are great!! You might wanna add some video to garner intrigue. I like your style & your perspective is VERY welcome in the gaming space!!! Liked & subbed. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
    PS. You might wanna look into the Retro Gem. Moving forward, I think it's going to become increasingly difficult to achieve a great picture with analogue video (component/scart included!!!) without a scaler. The Retro gem solves this problem. PS2's video is NOT that great to begin with... 🤷🏾‍♂🤷🏾‍♂🤷🏾‍♂

    I fairly recently (i think earlier this year) was thinking about getting a PS2 again for some specific games i want to play again. I thought about and decided the original PS3 might be the better option that way I can play PS1-3 games with that 1 console.
    I do agree with what u said about the ps2 though back in the day i had the original "fat" PS2 then i got the slim once it broke. Looking back the original looks so nice, some how it kinda does look sleeker even though it's so much bigger. Thinking bout it that version of the PS2 is one of the nicer/nicest looking consoles.
    Also; good informative video just found your channel/video

      That's a good point about backwards compatibility, I never actually used my PS3 for older games but the controller is basically the same so it wouldn't feel weird lol.

    The PS2 can also be modded to store and play games off a hard drive using the network adapter and a program stored in the memory card.
    You can still find everything required for modifying the PS2 online.
    Modifying also extends the life of the PS2 being it greatly reduces wear on the PS2 lens.

    I recently hooked up my old PS2 got some modern wireless controllers and have been having a blast. Graphics on the early side of the library aren't much better than PS1 but by the end they were approaching PS3 level, especially games that supported progressive scan and higher resolutions. Load times tend to be bad from Disc, but the biggest problem is it was an awkward time in gaming history where everything went 3D, but controls were yet to be standardized. If you can overlook bad camera angles and non intuitive control schemes there is still a lot of fun to be had in the PS2 library. A lot of creativity and numerous games styles they either died off or never took off. The library is full of mediocre games, but not the volume of shovelware we saw on the WII. There truly are some gems abd you hit about some of the big ones. My challenge is committing to playing a game on the PS2 that was released on say the XBOX or game cube because those versions were slightly better. Also some of the classics have been remastered and easy to play with modern graphics and controls on newer consoles. But I think every gamer should own one and was an important time in gaming history

    If you have unlimited box storage space, yes. If not, I would mod a ps3, get a decent internal and external hard drive and store ps1, ps2 (mod works on any ps3 system) and ps3 games on them.
    I think box and cd/dvd preservation isn’t important, but the data on them is.
    Yes you can store them on a modded ps2 and hard drive, but I find that process more cumbersome and problematic.

    I just recently picked up a broken PS2 from eBay for around $30. Hoping to get it going again soon. I suspect the power supply needs capacitors or the fuse replaced. I haven't opened it up yet. I picked up a 50001 fat model as it's one of the most moddable models, and if you can run games off a hard drive or flash drive you don't have to worry about your disc drive laser failing or your discs rotting/scratching and becoming unplayable as much.
    I didn't have a PS2 growing up, not even sure if I ever played one. I had a GameCube so I know some of the games of that era but not all of them. I'm hoping to find some fun 2D games on PS2. It seems like 3D games were most of what people played on PS2, but I'd like to find some 2D platformers or shmups ideally. I may also play some rhythm games like Taiko no Tatsujin or Pop'n Music.

    Wipeout Fusion was pretty epic for this console. .. also, does anyone else remember when the first ps2 consoles were released they used to play the blue backed games? Then after sometime the laser failed on the machine, then the blue games would only play when the machine was flipped upside down and then after more time it refused to play the blue discs, decent console though.

    PS2 has support for older PS1 games, although the emulation of those games are generally not very good compared to the original PS1. But for what it's worth, PS2 does support the ability to play old games through Sony emulation and that's a good way to play those games aswell as the PS2 game titles. Technically unlocking two consoles game libraries the PS1 and the PS2. Aswell as the ability to play CD and DVD content like movies or song discs, it's a lot of fun to use the PlayStation 2 as it has a great variety of things one could use it for including turning it into a computer for example a Windows, Linux, Ubuntu computer. That's what makes the PS2 so unique.

On that note, i do have to say that i came to a realization that the PS2 isn't as powerful as the OG Xbox or any other consoles released for it at the time. So now I've been collecting those era games for the other platforms to get the best "specs" in the respective consoles BUT i wasn't going to give up on it at all and now im focusing on exclusive titles to the PS2 console, which i think makes much more sense for me.
