Feels like you're missing on a lot of points to talk about, one of those being the soundtrack, in which Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed takes the cake by doing the bests remixes of old sagas. Also you failed to show that you can multiplayer the career mode in Transformed, which means you can do all those cool boss battles, traffic attack, etc modes with a friend, and since Sonic got the point for best Single Player because of its career mode, failing to say this is huge. Also unfair to give the Best Value to Mario Kart if you're going to talk about Nintendo Switch version, when this was initially a Wii U comparison, in which case you should've mentioned how PC got unlimited amounts of tracks in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed FOR FREE simply due to mods being available on the platform.

I dunno...Mount Wario, Electrodrome, Bowser's castle, etc are all great songs in MK8. True...but that alone doesn't make it better then MK8's with how solid MK8's gameplay is and it's online multiplayer and such.
I mean...even the Wii U had better value. Ok that's less fair, by that logic you could just bring up MK8 Wii U mods then.

    (Huge wall of text incoming.)
As much as I enjoyed the video, I'm going to have to say that I think Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is the winner here.
While both games are unique in their own ways, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed's gameplay stands out more given that there are parts of a track where you can change vehicles to go with the track's flow. Mario Kart 8's gameplay has essentially been the same ever since Super Mario Kart: Collect items to hit your opponents and finish the race. The anti-gravity mechanic, which was first used in Crash Nitro Kart, didn't really feel new to me. Depending on what kart combination and character you're using, it can be both helpful and a hindrance depending on what track you play on.
Drifting in Mario Kart, while decent, just overall feels unsteady, especially given that there are some tracks that require you to turn immediately on 200cc. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed addresses this issue by introducing a technique called Switch-Drifting, where you can still maintain a Level 1 or 2 Boost when you're greeted with one turn after the other. Mario Kart's drifting system is time-based, and depending on how fast you're turning your kart, your Drift meter is charged.
The AI in Mario Kart is flimsy. In some instances, the AI goes slow when you're far behind in a race. However, when you're much further ahead, the AI will stop at nothing to prevent you from winning. This is especially notable on a 200cc Grand Prix, where sometimes, the AI will drive into walls should they use a Mushroom on straightaways. The AI in S&ASRT depends on what skill level you're playing at. C Class is 50cc, and S Class is 200cc. In C class, the AI goes easy on you, but on the A and S Classes, they actually put up a fight and will stop you from winning at all costs. While I'm on this, Mario Kart has luck-based gameplay whereas S&ASRT relies on your skills.
S&ASRT also allows players to do tricks to help them build up boosts, whereas Mario Kart 8 only lets you do one trick and land in order to get a boost. However, should you get hit by an item such as a Red Shell, the Trick you performed will not be counted. S&ASRT's Trick system is unique, allowing players to perform Flips or Rolls to build up Boost power for when they land. In the air, they can also help them get a "Risk Boost" when they flip or roll away from an incoming obstacle.
Mario Kart has always had its share of items, some of which are considered to be the worst in the series (Such as the Blooper, Super Leaf, the Coin, and the infamous Spiny Shell). You have the staple Mushroom, Banana, Red/Green Shells, Spiny Shells, and Stars. The problem here is the luck within an Item Box. If you're playing an online race and you're in first, you'll end up getting either a Coin or Green Shell. S&ASRT's items are also luck-based, but they are more dependent on how far behind a player is. The All-Star, S&ASRT's most powerful item, can really help you get back into the race as it turns your character's kart into a plane that glides along the ground and shoot projectiles to slow others down. There are also item monitors called "Super Pickups" that give you three or six shots of a certain item.
For first time players, S&ASRT includes a tutorial to teach players how to play the game and to clear certain objectives. Mario Kart's learning curve, especially for newcomers, is a little too steep. However, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe addressed this by adding Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerating. The former keeps the player from going off-road and the latter lets you accelerate without holding down the A or Y buttons.
So, in my opinion, S&ASRT gets the award for best gameplay.
Now for tracks, Mario Kart 8 has a good selection of tracks that make it stand out from each other. My most favorite track to race on is 3DS Music Park. It shows how far Nintendo went with their graphics. They have beautiful design and are well thought out. S&ASRT's selection of tracks is good in their own right, with the most common fact being they represent all of Sega's well-known and lesser-known franchises. My favorite track in S&ASRT is Galactic Parade. The Classic Cup reused four tracks from the original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and while they do feel cramped with 10 players, I didn't mind them as much.
Therefore, Mario Kart 8 gets the award for the best tracks.
Now for the racers: A common complaint with the Mario Kart franchise (starting from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! up to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) is there are too many clone characters. If you ask me, the new racers in Mario Kart 8/Deluxe (Baby Rosalina, Pink Gold Peach, the Koopalings, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, and Gold Mario) are uninspired. That means there are 5 copies of Mario to race as, 4 going to Peach, and 2 going to Bowser. To sum it up, there are only 21 characters to play as. There is little to no variety between the characters. S&ASRT's roster, however, represents Sega as a whole. You've got characters from the Sonic franchise, Beat and Gum from Jet Set Radio, Ulala and Pudding from Space Channel 5, you name it. The PC version of S&ASRT even includes third-party characters such as Team Fortress and the (rather obnoxious) mascot of the Yogscast CZcams channel.
To sum it up, S&ASRT wins the award for having the best characters.
Now for Single-Player, I agree with everything you've said. Mario Kart 8's single-player mode could've offered more than just racing to unlock more characters and duking it out on the battlefield. S&ASRT has a good single-player campaign that unlocks a new difficulty level when you reach Superstar Showdown. Some missions in World Tour are hard to deal with (Such as the Pursuit and Traffic Attack missions), but they're well worth it when you come out on top. On top of that, you're rewarded with mods and characters that require a certain number of Stars to unlock.
    S&ASRT gets best Single-Player.
Multiplayer in Mario Kart has always been a staple of the series ever since Super Mario Kart. It brings family and friends together for a wild race across all 48 tracks in the game, but that's where the fun ends. Mario Kart's multiplayer is basically the same as single-player mode, but with more people. S&ASRT's multiplayer, on the other hand, is much more fun than Mario Kart. For starters, the Wii U version supports 5 players, but the fun doesn't stop there. You can do everything intended for single-player with your friends, including World Tour! Depending on the version you play, you can take up to 4 or 5 spots in an online lobby. Mario Kart, while fun in the multiplayer department, doesn't feel any different from the single-player mode.
    S&ASRT gets best multiplayer.
Finally, the pricing. While Mario Kart 8 has a good price, the amount of content it has is enough to keep me coming back just to play more races and sharpen my skills. S&ASRT, as this video said, has been released across 6 platforms. The game has enough content to keep me coming back to it as well as inviting my friends over to do 5-player races and play in the Wii U-exclusive Party play. It features two modes named Ninja Tag and Banana Heist. In the former, the Wii U GamePad player controls Joe Musashi and must tag all the other players before time runs out, and in the latter, the GamePad player controls AiAi and must flatten the other players as they scramble around the arena collecting bananas.
These sum up why I prefer playing Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed more than Mario Kart 8. In some ways (as another user pointed out), the game is much faster than Mario Kart 8 and is more based on skill rather than luck.

If you avoid an obstacle while in aerial mode (with the right stick)

Sonic is hard because the CPU are actually on a whole different level. I've mastered stages and can mop the floor with people online in sonic as long as I'm not spammed with weapons like it's MK but on extreme difficulty, I'll do a stage flawlessly and hit every boost opportunity, (I know all the advance boost techs and the science behind boosts in transformed) and they still can catch you with a simple mess up and if you fall a certain distance behind, you might as well forget about it because they're not going to be caught unless spammed with weapons, which is unlikely

Best gameplay goes to Mario Kart 8? For being 'less jarring' that's incredibly biased, a game can't be judged for having jarring gameplay, that just means you need to undestand the inner workings, if you don't, you don't have an excuse to judge the game fairly. Mario Kart 8 literally does nothing with the plane/boat mechanics, gliders just have you slowly glide down, its boring, nothing ever happens unless someone has a homing item as normal items just dunk straight downwards. Boat is just slightly slower and floatier kart racing, racing on the surface is a lot more appealing, for example, watching the giant mines from Rogue's Landing fall into the water, creating big waves that bounce you upwards, allowing you to perform tricks and get major boosts.

    • @jimmyeddy
      @jimmyeddy  Před 7 lety +1

I appreciate your feedback and trust me I've gotten a lot of it for this video; both good and bad. While I think you've expressed yourself very concisely and thoroughly, I take issue with a few of your statements:
-I didn't just give Mario Kart 8 best gameplay for being "less jarring", I gave an entire laundry list of reasons as to why *I personally* think Mario Kart 8 has better gameplay. Mario Kart 8 has consistent gameplay, which *I personally* enjoy a bit more than the three racing styles on offer from SaASRT.
-I don't understand what you mean by "inner workings" either, I can't judge a game if I don't know the coding and game engines? I don't ever judge a game based on those facets because as a consumer, what I see is what I get, I'm not at liberty to judge those things and I don't really know of a game critic who does analyze that.
-I don't think I came across as biased in the video. I think I was pretty fair to both titles; listing good things and bad things about them.
I understand your other criticisms and trust me, I do take them to heart. There's a lot about this video I wish I could change or leave out in retrospect, but I think purely as someone who plays games, *My choice* for better title is Mario Kart 8.
Remember, I'm just a schlub who plays games on occasion, I'm no coding expert or game designer, what I say in a comparison is not the be-all end-all and is just my opinion.

      @andrewstokes6623 Před 7 lety +2

I think what he meant by inner workings of the game is that the game is more interesting at its core due to the uniqueness of it and tbh I found the gliding to be much more intrusive and jarring in Mario than the plane sections in sonic because the gliders have no weight to them, the gliding controls often lead me to my death(at least with the planes they kept the same controls and weren't weightless idiots), the fact you can go underwater/glide but not fly and ride in planes/boats is a little silly and the idea of gliding in cars is just silly in my eyes and for all you harped on about customisation and all that other than a few different vehicle bodies(seriously play the game again they reused certain bodies again but gave different colour schemes to them which to me = laziness), wheels and gliders which never really alter your stats at all anyway comes off more redundant than innovative whereas sonic has different mods for the same vehicle(s)for each character and special ones for a select few and exclusive ones for some characters(super acceleration for shadow, super speed for sonic and more I cannot remember)which makes races feel different(to varying degrees of difference)also to be completely honest Mario kart 8 was dull and uninteresting for me personally, its too luck based, has boring tracks, the gliding and underwater weren't utilised very well next to the blatant sonic riders:ZG copy of antigravity(it takes more after F zero in execution though), the characters are bad, the vehicles are boring, the amount modes are despicably bad and both my sister and I found multiplayer underwhelming and boring next to sonic also the sonic multiplayer has no performance issues for me so that is moot and overall sonic is just more interesting in my eyes.

    • @jimmyeddy
      @jimmyeddy  Před 7 lety +2

Great comments, you make many good points. For me though, Mario Kart 8 was the best in the series since Double Dash, and really the most fun I've had with a Mario Kart title since I was a little kid. I think just the sheer accessibility made it slightly more appealing to myself and friends.
Trust me, I spent hours of time on SaASRT, but for someone like myself who considers himself a "casual gamer" and rarely plays games that involve a lot of time investing or learning. I think Mario Kart's gameplay has the pick up and play aspect down pat which for many is enough to keep players intrigued.
In honesty, I like both games a lot! Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is my go-to single player kart racer and Mario Kart 8 is my go-to multiplayer racer. There's things I like and dislike about each title, which is something I try to ensure of any two games I compare on this segment.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate the comments. Very well expressed and justified.

    1. Your complaints about the drift mechanic in Mario Kart 8 can also be said about MKWii and MK7, it seems as if you have played them as you mention that the Underwater and Glider mechanics are more ferined than 7.
    2. For a majority of the video, you consider Mario Kart 8 to be just the Wii U version, but at the end of the video, you decide to add Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to the mix. By doing this, you have to redo parts of the video to include information about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but you never do that.
Also, it's Bowser Jr., not Baby Bowser. They're two separate characters.

Reason why I find Sonic racing games (purely All Star Racing not Riders or R) better is mainly how difficulty works. Unlike Mario Kart the difficulty of the actual racers (mainly the AI) doesn't effect the speed of the actual race. Plus in order to fully complete Mario Kart games you have to play all Grand Prixs on all type of difficulty or in CCs. With Sonic that is not at all the case. 100% always full speed no matter the difficulty. It is also not required to play much more pathetically easier levels of difficulty in order to unlock more of the game like new characters. In that regard Sonic heavily beats Mario. But as ASP said it is more harder to bring in friends or family into something like Sonic rather than Mario Kart which by the way is very beginner friendly and just overall a much better causal experience. If your gonna play Sonic than make sure you brought your A game along with mastering the various gimmicks used in Sonic.

    -The game is faster
    -Less luck based
    -The drift works better imo
-Doing the aerial tricks to gain boost is trickier, since you can either get a huge boost or be slowed down if you get too cocky
-Water and air segments make more sense since gameplay changes more in then
-There is a very cool mission mode, instead of just grand prix
-More variety of chars (in mk8 you have 3 types of chars: all around, speed and heavy and chats with good acceleration and handling. in sonic you have all these 3 types plus more, eggman for example has good speed and handling)
-You can play locally up to 5 people instead of 4 (rly, Nintendo? sega used the wii u features better than you?)
-You can play online with 5 local friends instead of 2
-Unlocking the secret chars is hard, it feels good when you finally unlock them
I like both games, but I have to say sonic racing transformed is better, possibly my favorite racing game ever
    Anyway, great video!

See, the fast part in mario kart depends on your skill level(Its harder when more speed, like when you start sonic racing: challenging 150cc or 200cc even thought it is kinda broken, the mario kart 8 creaters thought that it would be better for better gemeplay (Framreate mostly or for the game to work properly when 4 or less players) And unlocking new karts like the ones you like may be hard, theres a point to playing single player so you can unlock all karts so thats whats good about single player, the game also dosent go straight to changing gameplay for beginners, but the gameplay itself is hard to master in some tracks so even with one basic racing style it is still interesting, there is the classic battlemode with special battle tracks in deluxe + more fan favourite characters and all characters can use all karts. My opinion thought since i also like playing S&ASRT but i still like both of them alot.

The gist of it is, that in my opinion, Mario Kart 8 is a better value regardless of the version of the game whether it's Wii U or Switch. The multiplayer in Mario Kart 8 is better too, regardless of which version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed you have.
Also, I don't believe there is a version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on the Xbox One, correct me if I'm wrong though.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but if that is how you felt you should not have even mentioned the Switch version. Doing so made it appear as though your decision was based solely on MK8D(not MK8) being of better value than a game that was released almost five years prior. But hey, they're both great games either way you slice it. Also there is no XBOX ONE version the XBOX360 version is backwards compatible with the system.

The casino stage in all stars racing transformed is a returning track from the previous game, thats why its design seems odd compared to the rest of the game

honestly all stars transformed is a bit better if you're really competitive and want creativity, but for the more conservative players who don't want something too different, Mario Kart is the way to go

I think MK8 is more pulished and fun, but S&SASRT is more innovative

There's also the part where the Sonic game has some cool characters and cars, while Mario Kart has none, and the game itself looks like its made for toddlers.

How come you didn't talk about how MK8 allows you to customize karts and make different customizations?

Excite bike arena is what I feel to be the very opposite of a competitive track. Racing is about maneuvering the course in the fastest way possible, so what's so competitive about simply covering your ass with a shell and doing as many tricks as you can. I hate this course because many times I find myself putting everyone else in item hell or someone else is doing that for me. It is what I believe to be one of the least competitive tracks in the game. The worst is baby park, you're basically wishing yourself luck from start to finish.

He forgot the risk mechanic in s&sasrt. If you use your flips for the flying sections and barely miss a pillar or anything else you will he rewarded with a boost

Sonic gave me a story and reason to do races.. Mario kart is fine for multiplayer, but gets tired quickly for me.. I’m mainly single player, and there’s no reason to keep playing (for me)
