To learn more about the historic town of Calumet check out this story: www.onlyinyourstate.com/michigan/historic-small-town-mi/
My husband's family came from Slovenian in the 1880s and settled in Calumet and worked in the copper mines...
I started crying watching this. I remember being a small child and walking to the overlook with my dad. He loved up north everything and we camped everywhere ❤❤
I'm from Michigan and the UP is beautiful! And I'm with you on the fall. Fall could be forever for me!
Love the history and tours! Can't go anywhere these days..but it's neat to see how different the regions of our country are.
Omg I wish I could buy that prison and turn it into an animal rescue! It's already fenced with kennels inside😁😊
I was raised In Michigan the lower ,, but we did get up to the UP.. lower and UP are both beautiful,,, loved camping in Michigan ,,,
Summer time all camp sites are gonna be packed in the UP since, we all head up north for vacation in Michigan. I am with you and absolutely love history of the old towns!
Sign up for reservations starts New Year’s Day and by noon all the sights are booked for the year ahead. The state does hold back 6 sights per night for walk ins but that requires you to be at the shack to get in at 6am and you’re not guaranteed a spot
@@5thdimension625 Covid means that people are unable to perhaps go out of the country, or just freely travel as much as before Covid, therefore everything is booked. Our country is booked tight by our own as well.
The State.of Michigan designs state camp grounds for maximum revenue so unless you are at a wilderness trail spot privacy and solitude are hard to come by in park campgrounds.
I enjoy watching the drive through towns. I love hearing about some of the history of the places. I was so into the video that when it was over, I was like no it can't be over already. Can't wait for the next one. Safe travels.
Li going out
Thanks Dawn! Glad to hear you are enjoying the UP vids.
No parts of your videos are ever boring, no way! Love looking at the cool old towns that you take us to. Your videos, your way, your style are perfect the way they are.
Carolyn. Don’t stop filming the buildings as you go through towns. I really enjoy seeing the different kind of architecture. I can tell this area (the UP) is bringing back memories for you - all of which I pray are good! Love you and Sadie! She’s so incredible. Those intense eyes just melt my heart! ❣️🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼❣️
Thanks, Judy. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one!
Another great video--seeing Sadie's joy in the waves was so fun! And the small towns--very cool. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching Terry!
Thank you for stopping in today Carolyn. 🙃 I really enjoyed our visit and loved getting out to the woods and lakes with you and Sadie. I guess I'll be seeing you again in a few days so, until then, take care. 🙋♀️
She so loves that water now! Maybe only as long as there's a stick at the end as a reward! But she did it! 👍👏🐕
Michigan is gorgeous! Love those brick buildings in Calumet.
You should come over to the Canadian side of Lake Superior. Beautiful white beaches and not many people. Cross at Saul Ste. Marie. Pancake Bay provincial park is breathtakingly beautiful, and a well kept secret. Never ever crowded and the beach goes on for miles.
Carolyn, I love your filming while you drive. I was born and raised in Springfield, Mass then lived in middle class Maryland until 1980 when I moved to Los Aneles and then moved to Taos, NM in 2001. I miss the east coast housing styles, the small working class towns, so American nostalgia that I love and miss, my roots. Thank You for keeping this in your videos. Love enjoying vicariously your road trips. I was a nomad , housesitting and camping in the SW deserts. Thumbs up. Yes Penny candy , bought in the little store on my walk home from school, back in the 1960's when little kids were safe about town.
Yaaay! I was one of the many who recommended the U.P! I'm a Michigan girl- live downstate, between Detroit and Ann Arbor. I'm so glad you love Michigan's UP! XOXO
Has to be ypsi
I grew up in the near north suburbs of Detroit. I live in West Michigan now, on the Baseline Road (from which the state was surveyed), which corresponds to 8 Mile Rd once you get into the city. About ten miles from Lake Michigan. The town(s) are called ‘Houghton-Hancock’ since it is all actually one place. Be certain to check out Tahquamenon Falls - not high, but picturesque.

WE really enjoyed the tours through the towns... The architecture was awesome !!!!!!!!!!!
It's not boring at all. Plus the snippets of history make the driving through town all the more interesting. Keep it going Carolyn🌿
Thank you! It's great to hear viewers enjoy the history dialogue as well!
Love this video, scenery’s, old old red brick buildings, homes, peoples lives, beautiful, thanks for letting us travel with you and Sadie!
Oh Sadie, you are just precious, the way you sit up front, so alert, so wanting to get out and explore, every single moment, I'm sure! 🐕😊. The vivid green in the surrounds is beautiful Carolyn.
Lake Superior is very big. Water to the horizon. I drove along the lake but on the Canadian side many moon ago. It is impressive.
Love seeing the old buildings. Keep on filming them. Pretty sure I’m not the only one who enjoys seeing them.
Thank you Rena!
Never stop Filming small towns it’s not boring! It’s very cool!👍🏻
STOP IT IS NOT boring you showing your drive through towns. I love it!! I remember penny candy. Now it’s Dollar Store plastic bag candy. 🥰😂🥳
Love watching your videos. I feel like I’m on the adventure as well. Also love seeing Sadie in the front seat, just watching the world go by. Really enjoys being with you and watching where your next adventure would be.
😊 thank you and thanks for watching!
Sadie really loves the water! So wonderful!
I so enjoyed this video. Love the old towns. So much character and history in these old towns.. not boring at all.
Thank you Susan!
Most Americans don't realize what beautiful lakes we have.... Understand great lakes have 1/3 fresh water in the world.!!??? Yes they look like an ocean.... Those who live near are fortunate.... Sweet.... Hugs to both of you....
I like them better then oceans, no salt.
Not boring at all! Those old towns and their history and architecture are super fascinating. And the UP is beautiful. Thanks for taking us there Carolyn and Sadie. ❤
When you were talking about Calumet the thing that popped into my brain was the Calumet baking powder sitting in the cupboard when I was a kid in a red and grey round can with the Indian head and headdress on it-nostalgia indeed!
Exactly what I was remembering, too!
Absolutely NOT BORING! Your commentary, whether researched beforehand or guesses, is fascinating to me, interesting. I am just beginning to explore other parts of the country.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I love how your baby looks out the window like hes really enjoying the view.
Aw I Love Sadie so very much. She is a very smart & beautiful dog.❤️💗♥️🐕
WATCHING SADIE CLEAN THE WOOD...AMAZING!!!!!!
AND YEP, REMEMBER THE MIXED CANDY WE USE TO GET FROM THE CORNER CHINESE STORE.
SO FUN!!!
Hi Carolyn it's been a minute since I have written to you and commented. Here's some words for thought . I had a little chihuahua terrier for many years when taking her on a walk she would pull the leash the entire time walking her no matter how long you walk. It got to a point when this little 12 lb dog could literally make your arms sore from pulling the leash. Watching CZcams videos I learned that all dogs have the same similar trait that they enjoy working and showing their owners they pull their own weight and can be helpful with the energy they have if used correctly. Gave me an idea for my little dog to build her a little cart to pull for all the extra energy my dog m had. It worked very well I would put oranges or different fruits we would see along the walkway and load her cart up with a few things even in Holiday times I would decorate the cart very creatively and my dog m enjoyed walking around showing she had a purpose in life. If you build your own cart for your dog it's not too much trouble you could practically build a cart out of just about anything for a medium sized dog I used wood aluminum and rubber toy wheels for the cart I built and I even built one for larger and medium sized dogs just for fun to see how it would come out. They are fun and worthwhiled I could imagine your dog could load up quite a cart and just pull that all through your hike. I do have training in Auto body technician work that is a lot of welding and manipulating metal to fabricate it to different shapes and sizes on vehicles that need cosmetic and structural repairs so building a doggy walk cart was not much of a challenge for me. It was fun creating skid plates and custom features that the cart had integrated into its usefulness. Good luck Carolyn Joey from Malibu CA

Thanks for watching Joey and thanks for the thoughts! Glad you tuned in this week!
Your music picks are always amazing!
Yep, when I was in K through 3, I often would select penny candy from bins in a teeny tiny little one-room store before walking home. Red Bluff also has the brick buildings and Victorian houses, so these towns you've been going through call to my heart, also.
That's my fav.season too !! I was surprised to hear your 2 months behind...
I use to have a lot of problems with the valve stems on my class C RV, especially the ones on the rear with the valve stem extensions. Talking to a truck tire shop where I was replacing a defective valve stem, I found out I could replace the rubber valve stems with metal ones used on trucks. It was around $25.00 per tire, but since I had that done, I have not had any more valve stem problems.
Best place ever!! U.p. of Michigan.
Camp there many times.
Try to get to Taquanamon Falls, Grand Marsis, Kewanaw peninsula, Sault Ste. Marie, etc....enjoy.
Safe travels
I really enjoy watching you drive through towns and never find it boring!
So glad you share the videos of driving through those beautiful little towns. I also love them and pray they'll be preserved forever....
I have watched you for years but for some reason this was my favorite video. (Short memory?) The Beach play time was the best ever. Sadie was soooo happy. I remember when she was so afraid of the water as a puppy. It really made me laugh with the joy of real connection with an animal.
Awe, thank you! And thanks for being a faithful friendly viewer!
born and raised in michigan. home base is northern michigan. The UP is one of my favorite places to camp.Lots of waterfalls and lighthouses.
👍 Fall is the BEST! Sadie was having a blast in the water. She probably slept great that night after all that exercise :) Safe & Happy Travels
Yes it is beautiful 💜😊 We just came back from a beautiful northern Michigan scenic fall drive 🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁
Pure Michigan ya gotta love it 💜💜🤗 stay safe and take care-Debbie
Thanks for tuning in Debbie!
Oh you went to Houghton! My great grandfather immigrated there from Finland to work in the copper mines! It is beautiful up there.
First of all your videos are definitely not boring. I love how you share everything with us. Sadie is such a sweet girl. She makes me smile and laugh the way she enjoys herself. You have given this girl a great life. You have taught her so much. She is a smart good girl. Happy you have each other. Cheers and God bless.
Thanks Hope and thanks for watching!
I’m grew up in the NY Finger Lakes area near where I believe you grew up near. I understood how much you enjoyed Michigan in the northeast. I live in Texas and many years later since moving here, I yearn for the woods, lakes, waterfalls, and rolling hills and meadows of the northeast. I totally got your happiness of returning to a place where time seemed to standstill, never mind the slower speed limits! You looked very happy. Adorable dog, Sadie!
I was yellin Sadie come back lol, It was like I was there too.,,The parks are really taking a beating these days with overcrowding! Thank you so much for the sticker, it's a beauty.
I love seeing how different areas of the country developed and grew, and the architecture and customs therein. And you look fantastic in gingham!
I love the old style homes and towns plz keep recording your drive through :)
I love watching you all. The water is so pretty looks like an ocean.
Footage of the towns is not boring! I feel like I’m traveling in the RV with you - lol!
Our inland oceans are salt-free!
I camped several years ago in the UP of Michigan and loved it! Wife and I had a rustic campsite at Pictured Rock National Lakeshore. Plenty of room between campsites and loved the trails along Lake Superior. The sand dunes were great! wife, daughter and I really loved it, but wife missed her showers...lol. Stay safe Carolyn! We did have black bears in and around the camp.
🙋🏻♀️I remember real penny candy. Those were the days. Beautiful video.
I believe Calumet is a brand name for baking soda, flour, etc. I remember my mom bought that brand.
NOT boring at all! Loved it! Thanks for not editing it out! 💕🥰👍
Go North young woman! I’m from Michigan and you are in one of my favorite parts of the world. Eagle River and Copper Harbor await you.
Loving your videos of old towns and history there.....Sadie is amazing and so are you, be safe and keep going
Thank you Betty, I appreciate that!
Looks like Sadie is enjoying her life to the fullest! I'm glad I got to see this video. It's been awhile. 💖🐾🐾
I agree with you about wishing the fall season could be all year. I love hiking but not as much in warm and humid weather.. I have never been to the UP of Michigan but hoping to go someday, preferably in the fall!
I loved hearing your comments about this part of the UP.
9:48 -- Sadie's tongue, though!! I love her.
"Or an utter disaster" hahaha
P.S. Decidedly *not* boring to travel the towns with you!
Lol I missed that one. Thanks for posting the time stamp :) Sadie is such a fantastic pup!
Oh snap you need to go back there or stay when the trees start putting on a show! I bet it is totally crazily breathtaking......
Lake superior has always looked like the ocean to me. You can't see across it. The UP is a beautiful area. Lots of history & interesting things. Have a blessed week 💖🌟
That bright red dirt is really something!! I also think there was some red rock! I enjoy seeing the road through your eyes, and the bits of history.
Glad your touring in the up might get up there sometime .Just gives me an idea what it's like. Thanks for your videos .Loved New Zealand.
Just love to travel with you and Sadie. I enjoy how you seethe beauty in the past life of towns. Be safe
What beautiful building... Interesting history... Loving it...!!!
Carolyn the Michigan upper Peninsula looks amazingly beautiful.
I love your little town viewing too! It isn’t boring at all!!!
The Porkies are awesome, did a weekend backpack trip down to the Lake of the Clouds a few falls ago (2019), weather was just turning (colors were so nice) and it was a bit cold but awesome. I also did the entire Pictured Rocks shoreline and back from Munising. The U.P. Superior shore is definitely my happy space. If I could spend winter along the Pacific coast and summers along Superior, I'd be set. How about Calumet, 2019 was my first time there, it's such a cool old town. Also, there were a lot of POW camps during WWll in the U.P., that's was probably not one but calling it a camp may have been a term the state used for that old prison.
Yep
I love it when you show the old areas of towns. I love architecture so it is so cool to see the different towns and the styles of stores and houses. And Sadie is precious! I love how she looked at you when you told her she was getting sand on the dash..."I know but I don't care because you love me anyway!
I remember penny candy in the brown paper bags. I'd go to our local neighborhood candy store every Saturday & I'd have a quarter or fifty cents & I'd rack up on candy. Hmmm those was the good olde days.🍬🍫
I enjoyed the tour of the old towns. Thank you for taking me along!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for tuning in!
I love to hear you talk about the places you are driving through and see them with you, our towns and cities are very different in England so it’s lovely to visit with you. Thank you x
Thanks, Susan! I'm glad to hear you enjoy traveling with me!
It's is wonderful to have you wondering our beautiful country giving us old farts a nice tour of places we will probably never get to visit. Thank you for all your content.
lol you're welcome Mary! Thanks for joining me on this adventure!
You definitely need to check out the Keweenaw Peninsula.
You could camp right out by Lake Superior.
I've lived here 6 years
So Beautiful!!! Love Michigan
That Sadie, she’s a water dog! My standard poodle Seneca was like that- fetching in the water was the BEST thing ever!
That was so fun watching Sadie play what a beautiful area you are in
Hi Carolyn. I enjoy your videos and appreciate it when you are candid and informative 👍
Thanks for watching Carolyn!
Thank you Carolyn 5
Loved it all even the towns
Will head for that prison when the zombies take over !!!
😆
Love you and Sadie !
Hello Carolyn, I love watching Sadie play in the water! Such a beautiful place to explore. I remember Penny candy too!!! Awesome video, thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Not boring part my favorite part sometimes I watch those parts twice!
My husband and I backpacked there starting at the Lake of the Clouds parking lot a few years ago. We slept on top overlooking the lake....and then the WIND came. I thought a tree was going to crush us..my blowup thermarest had a hole. We woke up in the morning and it was lightening and pouring rain on the opposite side of the lake. We shoved everything in our backpacks and scrambled out. We made it without getting wet climbing on rocks..got back to our car..and it was wet! Phew! It was an adventure! Actually a really happy memory. Glad you like the UP as much as we do!
I just started watching your videos....you have inspired me....and You are so right to just hunker down for a month in the same place and not wear yourself out. I think you should do a lot more of that and really enjoy the rest and rejuvenation. Blessings to you!
Thanks for tuning in and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Glad to hear you are enjoying my vids.
What a beautiful drive, thanks 4 taking me along... SWEET
Dang, looks like a frickin RV convention! What a beautiful park except for the bugs. And the humidity.
It was great...I think we all could do without the bugs and humidity. lol
It is always cool by Lake Superior. Enjoy your time there. Michigan is where I am from the most beautiful state!
It's interesting driving thought towns to see the old houses....n history .. love it ...
Loved watching Sadie retrieve her stick and surf the waves! I also enjoyed the towns and the drive up the Keweenaw peninsula is great. It looks like you didn't have the best weather, it's much nicer when the sun is shining and especially in the fall. Looking forward to the rest of your UP videos.
Love going along on your small town adventures!! My Dad owned a 5 & 10
Store in our small Iowa town & during summers I worked behind the candy counter...yes, I remember bagging up the penny candy 🍬🍭😍!!
My daughter goes to a beautiful college in Houghton! It is so gorgeous in the UP. It was so nice watching you drive through the towns and stopping at all the lakes. Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip. I pray you have safe travels.
I am totally loving the UP of Michigan videos. The Lake Superior area looks fantastic. I see old buildings all the time here...but I still love wondering about the history behind them. Wonderful video Carolyn.👍👍👍👍👍😊
Thank you Marilyn and thanks for watching!
No it is not boring! I love to see the towns!!
I'm happy that you are showing your UP travels! My great-grandmother lived along one of the beaches like the one Sadie was playing in. It was not the easiest place to swim. Rocky and very cold! She's tougher than I was. Thanks for bringing back some nice memories for me.
It's not boring,, love watching....
Wow! So crazy to see you in my hometown. I grew up in Calumet.
You pronounced Ontonagon correctly :) It was so cool that you went through Houghton/Hancock, it brought back good memories even though the towns have grown a lot since my husband went to college there at MI Tech. I would love to have another breakfast at the Suomi Bakery :)
