I was part of the choir for this show, it was an amazing experience. Dave Grohl was on drums for all the rehearsals, so it was a surprise to everyone when Jason Bonham came out for the final performance. Also, this video has footage both from the dress rehearsal, and the live performance. After the show was over, Stephen Colbert came up to me and 2 of my fellow choir members to tell us that we did a great job, it was surreal.
Choral arrangement was done by Rob Mathes, and our chorus director is Joyce Garrett. Our choir was also at Obama's inauguration, Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl, and every Christmas in Washington performance on TNT, until it was canceled.
We were drawn from a lot of different sources around the DC area, including some former High School choirs after we all graduated, some church choirs, and eventually some University of Maryland choir members.
We rehearsed every day including weekends for about 3 weeks for this, and for most of our performances

Fun fact, Robert pretty much hates it, when others sing their songs, and on top of his "do not touch" list, is "Stairway to heaven".
But... he does have a soft spot for the Wilson sisters, and he sought them out after the show, to not only congratulate them on a job well done, but also to tell them he really loved the performance.
And what isnt there to love about this, the choir, the orchestra, the second choir, the bowler hats, Jason Bonham, "Blue" Lou Marini! (ok, i added him for me, because i'm a HUGE fan of his work) and the Wilson sisters ofc. (Heart, the female counterpart to Led Zeppelin)
I love the joy you express when hearing this masterclass performance of the giant classic song by Led Zeppelin by the lovely sisters.
Ann's vocals are as good as way back in the 70s' she has not lost a single frequency from her range, she's still as clear as a church bell, and Nancy has got to be one of the best acoustic guitar players around, the talent these two share among them, is almost unfair lol... almost ;)
Ann is 69 now, but if you didnt know, someone could easily fool you into thinking this is a lady in her early 30's or even her 20's. (she was 62 or 63 at the time of this honoring) and over 4 decades, they've been at it, and been successful from day one.
Ty again Valerie, for a great video and reaction, to me, if i cannot have the Led Zeppelin version, then this version is the perfect replacement for me, the power of it all... just wow.
(Edit, in this video, i just love how Yo Yo Ma is enjoying it all, and how Bonnie Riatt is rocking out to this wonderful performance)

Plant was misty eyed the entire Heart performance. If you watch from the entire Heart performance, you'll notice their reaction when Jason Bonham walked out. They (Zeppelin) didn't know he was going to be there and was an utter surprise when he walked on stage. Plant said all he could think about was John Bonham and how much he would have loved this performance. That's why you see Jimmy and John bouncing in their seats and Robert is sitting almost motionless. It was an incredibly emotional performance for Robert.

And think about how blown away Zeppelin was by this performance, not to mention how it was for Heart to sing in front of their heroes. Jimmy Paige was so astounded that he laughed like a young kid at how epic this was. In a way, they got to hear their song like it was something they were hearing for the first time---- this version was so good that they not only could reminisce about it while listening, but appreciate it in another way--- like they had never heard it before, because of the level at which Heart pulled it off. It wasnt some knock-off cover for sure. This version, in fact, was equal to and maybe even (unimaginably) better than the original, and the original was otherworldy. Heart, though, knocked it out of the universe. Amazing and beyond!

Epic is the correct way to describe this tribute to Led Zeppelin. I think I like it better than the original, just for the pure emotion it brings out. Everything - the choir with the bowler hats, Bonham's son on the drums, Nancy's voice and Ann's intro - evoke the raw feelings of missing someone who is gone. Robert Plant almost brought to tears - me, well I don't have that kinda control. I sob everytime I see this performance.

Jimmy said on the BBC that they wrote the song in such a way that covering artistes could select different ways to open levels of the song in different ways. I feel that Ann and Nancy have actually made it there.

I love this performance . I also liked the reaction the remaining members had to it. I just have to say, Led Zeppelin played this with 3 musicians and one vocalist, and their live version had every bit as much impact as this symphonic performance and with a choir. By the way, they are wearing the John Bonham bowler hat in memory of Bonzo, RIP.

The "good drumming reaction" was to a part that John Bonham played on the live version from " The Song Remains The Same". His son paid tribute to him during that part. A subtle addition that makes this whole performance legendary.

    No pressure at all...
Rear the very end when Jason Bonham bowed his head, closed his eyes then looked up towards Heaven it was like he was saying "You made it up the stairway dad". Very moving.
