    9:40 - Conclusion
Hey guys, today I am going to show you what I found about Lord Rama’s bow and arrow. In case you are not familiar with him, Rama is the protagonist of the ancient Indian epic called Ramayana. Even today, Hindus worship Lord Rama who is typically shown with a bow and arrow. Ancient Indian texts mention that he never missed his target, and his arrows could go through multiple targets at the same time, there are carvings showing how his arrows go through 7 trees before hitting the final target. Was this a magical bow? Or was he using advanced technology?
Here you can see two guys with bows and arrows. It is clear that they are bows and it looks remarably simple, like basic wooden bows used by primitive tribes. Again, you can see a third one, but perhaps these are just regular archers, because look at their clothes, just a loin cloth and no ornaments. And they are just marching along, right next to regular foot soldiers.
But look at these bows.. there are wheels, strategically placed on both ends of the bow. This is crazy because Believe it or not, today we use wheels or cams in bows, we call them compound bows. You can see these are smooth circles, just like today’s cam wheels on compound bows. This is quite interesting because if you search online, you will see that the compound bow was invented just 50 years ago, in the US. But this temple is a thousand years old, and it clearly shows how ancient builders were using compound bows with wheels. It is easy to understand why putting wheels on a bow can make it much more powerful and efficient, because you have just installed some mechanical equipment to enhance human effort. But is this why Rama’s bow was much more effective? Did he just put wheels on his bow?
Here is where I found something really fascinating. I found some huge carvings of Rama and his brother, and their bows show some insane details. At first look, I thought they had wheels in their bows, but when I examined them closer, I realized that they are not wheels, they are gears. I mean look, you can see the teeth of the gear wheel, there is a gear mechanism attached to the bow. This is very very advanced ancient technology, because today’s bows don’t even use this technology. But within 20 years, before 2040, someone will start manufacturing this type of bow. What will such a bow be called? “Pull-Back Bow”
Sounds familiar, right? Because we have pull back cars today. When we were kids, we had toy cars and when we wanted them to move forward, we just pushed them forward. But then someone gave us a “Pull-Back Car” and instead of pushing it forward, you pulled it back, and it made a strange clicking sound, and when we released it, you remember how fast it went.
This is the exact same technology Rama used in his ancient bow. And you may think the pull back cars have batteries or something inside, but If you opened the car, inside you will find a couple of gears, and a spring. But yet, when we use this for technology, we can make wonders with it, so many machines like watches and bikes, use this technology.
Of course some day, some guy will come and claim that these are just flowers. Huh? But why would warriors put flowers on their bows? And if you look at any flower, the petals will be huge, and the center part will be smaller compared to the petals. But if you take any gear, the center part will be bigger and the gear teeth on the sides will be much smaller. And this is exactly what we see here. And you can see the strings attached to the mechanism, just like today’s bow. Everytime you see the gear, there is a string attached to it. You can see this on all the geared bow carvings. And you can also see these loose strings and knots.. These are called string silencers to absorb the noise and vibration. Even in modern day bows you will see them, it is just the nature of the beast itself. So Rama and his brother were using Pull-Back bows, this is why their bows were so efficient.
So why does Rama need gears & Pull-back mechanism in his bow, right? Just to shoot a regular arrow? It is time to look at the arrows, but this arrow is deliberately destroyed. But you can see this one survived, and it looks absolutely weird.

    Woah.
My name, Penelope, from the Iliad, inspired me to read the epic at a very young age. I always thought it strange that while Ulysses was away no one could load or shoot his bow. Only Ulysses knew the ‘trick’.
A year or so ago I discovered that Penelope is not a Greek name, but an ancient Indian name. She was renowned for her weaving, and as you know India has some of the most ancient houses of exceptional weavers. So it made sense to me.
I know I am all over the place, but bare with me.
If Ulysses found his wife in India, the bow could also be from there. He would have been taught by a master. He could have been awarded the bow by his teacher. If the bow, like the carvings, had gears and the trick was to pull back to go forward, without knowing the trick it would be useless.
For me this is a validation there is a connection between the warrior Ulysses and this temple.
    This is very cool.

Wonderful observation!! Another thought to add to your observation: the bow string is called 'pratyancha' and we find it's description in Swayamwara episode of Mother Sita in Ramayana and that of Droupadi in Mahabharata. Lord Ram pulled the pratyancha and while he was winding it around the Shiva Dhanuysha it broke with a thunderous sound. That was perhaps because he wound it a bit too much around the end of the bow and that tension of the pratyancha bent the bow more than it could handle and it snapped. The breaking sound of the bow brought the angry Sage Parashuram to King Mithila's court and on goes the story. My point it that the pratyancha gave an additional tension to the bow to propel the arrow forward. More the tension, further the arrow travelled. Thank you.

No doubt Lord Rama was a giant (if "rocket launchers" stood as tall as trees). The ancient Hindu were amazing story tellers. No other places have that much amount of detail in the temples. (sadly Britain & EU colonization) along with purposeful temple destruction has left India with much less material to investigate. I have read Ramayana several decades and i remember the story. Ravana tells his ministers and generals, after the first day of his battle with Rama, that he has never seen anybody shooting arrows that travel so fast. He has no reaction time to act. There is something about his bow he was amazed about.

      Hare Kṛṣṇa
What to speak of Rāvaṇa's bewilderment at the hands of Śrī Rāmacandra (Rāma)?
Now it appears even Hanūmān, the servant of the servant of Rāma -- Rāma's eternal servant -- can shatter the serenity of all Rākṣasas, including that of Rāvaṇa, the Rāja of Laṅkā:
... Rāvaṇa (to his brother, Vibhīṣaṇa,
and his son, Indrajīt, in the aftermath of Hanūmān's return to Śrī Rāma with long-, eagerly-awaited news of Śrī Sītā-devī) said:
Laṅkā, previously inaccessible, has been laid waste by this ... monkey (Hanūmān) who spoke with Sītā. He has burned our palaces, slain many Rākṣasas, and turned our city upside-down. Now Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and thousands of monkey soldiers march toward Laṅkā to exterminate us...
...The wise say that good counsel is the root to victory. Therefore, I ask you, what is to be done?
      Indrajīt:
Father, we have a vast army, equipped with maces, spears, swords, lances, bows and arrows. Why should you be ... apprehensive? Do not even imagine any harm can come to us because of Rāma and his cohorts. The only reason Hanūmān defeated us was because we had taken too much wine, and were at the time intoxicated. But I promise you! that ... rascal will not again enter Laṅkā alive. In fact, I will not tolerate the ... insults he has committed against us. Stay at ease, O king. Drink wine. And enjoy yourself with Sītā as you desire.
      Rāvaṇa:
      As I desire!
      Indrajīt:
Yes, father. I alone will slay Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and the entire monkey army, whether they take refuge in heaven or in hell....
... Exeunt Vibhīṣaṇa and Indrajīt ...
      Enter Śuka (Rāvaṇa's spy)
      Rāvaṇa:
      Ah, Śuka
Śuka: (offering prostrated respectful obeisances "Daṇḍavats"):
All Glories to your Rāja's Majesty!
      Rāvaṇa:
Śuka, Rāma and his army has crossed the sea on a causeway made entirely of stone.... How is it possible?
      Śuka:
      I ... I ... I do not know, your Majesty.
      Rāvaṇa:
They have already landed on the northern shore. Go there. Infiltrate their ranks. Find out the number and prowess of their leaders and warriors. Also find out how that bridge was constructed, how their army advances, and the strength and weapons used by Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. Go.
      Śuka:
      Yes, your Majesty....
      ... Exit Śuka ....
... Laṅkā's northern shore, the site of Śrī Rāma's arrival, with his army.
Śuka is detected and arrested as a spy by Vibhīṣaṇa, previously Rāvaṇa's brother, now already installed by Śrī Rāma as Laṅkā's new Mahārāja (lit., great king) with long life.
Enroute to Śrī Rāma with his prisoner, the monkey soldiers reduces Śuka to within an inch of his life. With Śuka's head covered with a bloody kerchief, Vibhīṣaṇa throws him at the feet of the brothers, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa and Śrī Rāma, in the presence of Sugrīva and Hanūmān, the leaders of the monkey army, and reports:
      Vibhīṣaṇa:
This is Rāvaṇa's man. I found him spying on the camp.
      Rāma:
      Spying! Is that so?
Śuka hesitates to make answer, knowing the likely penalty for spying under such circumstances.
      Lakṣmaṇa, raising his unsheathed sword:
Answer ... now ... or die my sword!
      Śuka:
Your Majesty, I was sent by Rāvaṇa to estimate your forces and examine their positions.
      Lakṣmaṇa:
There, my Lord. He admits his guilt and (again holding his sword aloft) therefore deserves to die.
      Rāma:
      Wait, Lakṣmaṇa!
(to Śuka) Tell me. Have you fulfilled your mission?
      Śuka:
      No.
      Rāma:
Then, Vibhīṣaṇa, give this ... messenger a tour of our ranks. And, when he is finished, let him go.
      Vibhīṣaṇa:
      Yes, my Lord.
      Śuka:
      What? what?
      Rāma:
Fear not for your life, my friend. Report us well to your king.
      Śuka:
Yes, your Majesty. Thank you, your Majesty. May you be victorious.
      Exit Vibhīṣaṇa and Śuka.
      * Vibhīṣaṇa - the Sadhu- (honest, saintly-) brother of Rākṣa-rāja (lit., King of the man-eaters) Rāvaṇa. He abandoned Rāvaṇa to join the side of Lord Rāma. After Rāvaṇa’s demise, Vibhīṣaṇa took up the throne of Laṅkā as Śrī Rāma's installed king.
      * Vibhīṣaṇa - a grandson of Pulastya Muni and the pious brother of Rāvaṇa. He was a staunch devotee of Lord Rāma, who offered him the kingdom of Śrī Lankā for four Yugas. He is one of eight great personalities who lives for more than one cycle of four Yugas.

The ancient Indians were trying to develop the entire world's population as best as possible as quick as possible to bring on the next golden age. . . .
All the temples and statues were teaching institutions and instead of giving classes to random visitors. They made statues and carvings to share the information. . . .

Fascinating. Taken individually, one might reasonably dismiss Mr. Mohan's explanations for strange details in the carvings of a Hindu temple as just reading too much into something that was just meant to be stylized or imaginary. But that dismissal gets a little weaker every time it is used--after all, if the people who carved these temples had the ability to accurately depict reality and do so everywhere else in their work, why do they seem to suddenly decide to take artistic license with details that can be explained quite well by a modern technology? To put it another way, how many times can one dismiss seemingly modern technology in ancient carvings as just fanciful interpretation before that dismissal becomes less reasonable than simply accepting what is right there in front of us?

It's simple; Rama doesn't know his bows and thus he keeps misidentifying parts.
The "gears" aren't on the tip of the bow and thus can't be a 'cam'.
In fact, with the placement they appear to be stringstoppers. As for the rope, that is used to mount the stoppers to the bow itself.
The arrow and string are so thick because the stonework can't depict thinner (that's why an arrow broke) so there is no reason to assume that it was anything but a "normal" arrow.
The bow itself however is a lot more interesting. It appears to be a head taller then the archers themselves, which is typical for a longbow. Longbows aren't known to have been used in India as far as I am aware, so that's actually interesting. But since Praveen has an active imagination but not much historical knowledge he overlooks the 1 revolutionary part of the entire scenery.

Very interesting topic. Thanks for the details. BTW the ancient text dhanur Vidya by Rishi Vasishta is available with us (free online. The English translation is also available). It is a huge book but I think it covers the topic in depth. I also saw a CZcams talk that collated knowledge in different puranas and this book and presented it. One can understand that even the names of bows like Kodanda or Saaranga for Lord Rama and Lord Krishna respectively simply mean the material, make (joints) and shape of the bows. But I believe there were couple of varieties of arrows - ordinary ones (the text says that everyone should learn archery for self defense (including women) but the powerful ones (called astras or divya astras) that are sound invoked (mantra invoked ) were only for soldiers or army folks. Regarding your question about how this ancient warfare died - I think the practice of teaching astras died with Mahabharata war - this war caused almost all the warrior class to die across nations (the description is worse than our world war). So the regular warfare was still there and was useful. When bahubali movie was released, I remember some newspaper talk of an archer who lived in 17th or 18th century who was extremely good at hitting multiple targets and the like. British found him and he was thrown in prison. Much like kalaripayattu I am sure this was also banned in British India and hence even the common archery declined. But I did see another CZcams interview with a guy living in the forests of Wynad who makes and uses bows and arrows today. Few years back I had enrolled in parent kid archery class in US. There was a guy with a tiny girl. When even the best in our team struggled to shoot the mark (this was the first beginner session) this one guy (an Indian) allowed his daughter to try twice and operated the bow at his daughter’s height but hit the mark every single time -many of us were surprised that he did not follow any rule taught - use of correct eye, the posture or anything but merely shot his arrows and hit the mark every single time. He merely said he was used to it from his childhood. So I do think there are many such people around - with talent for ordinary bow and arrows. Specialized one’s like Lord Rama’s was probably lost after Mahabharata war.

Destroys every book in the world and bans social and every media , technology then it will happen as you said. In India it has happened constantly for nearly 1000 years . About the compund bows and sights... I am a archer too and I do use the archer technics of the old dhanurveda, and I can say, the old technics doesnt work on any modern compund bows. In Dnaurveda they talk about 6 Mustis (technics to hold arrows on the bow) and with everyone you need to put the arrow on the right side of the bow in order to work, especially if you go a level up and hold many arrows in your hand meanwhile you are releasing on to be faster like in ancient times. Sights on compound bows however, can only be used if you put your arrows on the left side of the bow, because on left side you can aim with one eye in order tu use sights, and on right side you aim with two eyes in inutivley, also because you tilt your bow a bit to the right side or the bow stays straight but your bow will be in middle of two eyes, in modern archery nowadays, why they are able to use sights because of the left side the put arrows... In old ancient times, they always put arrows on right side to be faster... So its possible they used sights
