The San Jose Sharks: A Legacy of Failure

  • TRIGGER WARNING: The following video contains scenes that may cause horrible pain for Sharks fans and/or vicarious joy for division rivals.
The unfortunate fact is that the Sharks are my second-favorite team in the NHL. This is why I have to go deep. If you're wondering why the Sharks have a Legacy of Failure despite being so young, you aren't alone. The Sharks themselves don't have it.
To understand their failure, you have to look further into their history. A past incarnation of the club, if you will. Enjoy all of the pain.

Dont get me wrong, he leveled up come playoffs, but the 4th guy on a team's depth chart doesn't magically become a stud without the team around him playing excellently too, which given the entire team had a positive ± in the playoffs says to me they were dominant in 5 on 5 hockey.

    Update:
    *2018 Offseason*
You have signed Erik Karlsson! Possibly your last piece to win the Stanley Cup.
    *2019*
Here we are again. You are once again in the playoffs but probably going to choke, considering the fact you failed to win the division despite adding Karlsson.
    *2019 West Quarter-Finals*
You’re down 3-1 in this series, you have nothing to choke if you suck in the first place.
    *Game 7*
Wow you made it to game 7, complete the comeback!
    *12 minute mark*
Never mind you’re down 3-0 with under 12 minutes left and... oh my god. Did the Knights just commit a 5 minute penalty?
    *5 minutes later*
You’re up 4-3... way to make the Knights choke!
    *End of Regulation*
And you blew it and let the Knights tie it with under a minute left, only fitting.
    *Overtime*
YOU WON! You completed a great comeback in this game and series! It’s time for the Sharks to finally win the cup! Continue this great story all the way to Lord Stanley! You’re playing the Avalanche with home ice next series!
    *West Semi-Finals*
Jesus H. Christ that shouldn’t have been that close. The series went to 7 and you only won that game by 1. But it’s ok, repeat what you did 4 years ago and beat the Blues in the West Final!
    *West Final*
The series is split a 2 games a piece as you go back home for game 5, you got this!
    *Game 5*
And you get asswiped all the way around the bay.
    *Game 6*
That continues into St. Louis as you get knocked around again and shutout ending your Stanley Cup run abruptly.
    *2019 Offseason*
Nothing much has changed aside from losing longtime captain Joe Pavelski.
    *2020*
You guys are suddenly in the stellar of the league after horrible coaching and shitty goaltending. Firing your coach didn’t even make a difference. Just chill in the stellar while the rest of this pointless regular season is delayed because of the coronavirus.

    • @nicksojka7457
      @nicksojka7457 Před 3 lety +4

      *2020 NHL Draft Lottery*
I suppose you have two upsides to being one of the seven teams to not qualify for the expanded playoff format:
      1) Your in-state rivals in the Ducks and the Kings also failed to qualify, thus sparing you from their laughs for the time being.
      2) You finished 3rd-last in the league so you have a good draft pick waiting for you...
Wait, _you gave it to Ottawa in the Karlsson trade?!_ Jesus Christ, you guys are just as fucking infuriating off-ice as you are on it! It doesn't matter that you got another first rounder at the deadline by dumping Barclay Goodrow to Tampa because they happen to be one of the teams that are guaranteed to make it into the first round of the actual Stanley Cup Playoffs. Despite being one of the worst teams in the regular season you will be picking in the bottom 16, while the team with your original pick has both the third and fifth overall selections. All you can do now is pray that Tampa chokes in the first round again.
      *2020 Stanley Cup Finals*
Your pathetic prayers are ridiculed by the hockey gods as Tampa wins the Stanley Cup. Barclay Goodrow is now a Stanley Cup Champion. And you will be selecting 31st overall in the draft. More than you deserve to be honest.
      *2020 NHL Entry Draft*
With said pick you select Ozzy Wiesblatt, a winger in the WHL. Can't wait to see how you waste him too.
      *2020 NHL Free Agency*
Jumbo Joe signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs. His 15-year tenure with you has come to a disappointing yet unsurprising end. (text: If it makes you feel better, he won't win a cup there either.) At least you got Patrick Marleau back for league minimum. Speaking of which, here's a fun fact I discovered the other day: if the NHL goes with an 82-game season like it wants to and Marleau plays in all of them, he'll become the first player in league history to play 2,000 career regular season and playoff games. You better hope the league sticks with that plan, because that's all he's gonna get.

Here's how the Sharks have done since this video was uploaded:
*September 13, 2018* - Well, look at that! They make a huge trade just before the season: Erik Karlsson, a skilled defenseman freed from the mess that is the Ottawa Senators. All for the price of... eugh that's actually a hefty package. But never mind that, he'll justify it with his play! No, we're not worried about his injury history, why should we be?
*February 25, 2019* - Ooh, they add Gustav Nyquist to help with their playoff push! Nice work, Sharks. Quick side note though: you're trading quite a lot of draft picks away. Just make sure it doesn't come back to haunt you.
*Western Conference First Round, 2019* - How about that! You overcame a 3-1 series deficit thanks in part to Martin Jones suddenly finding incredible form! Now is the time to be the one to get revenge for last year's defeat! Time to take out those arrogant Vegas Golden Knights!
*Western Conference First Round, Game 7, 2019* - Oh right, this is the Sharks. They go down 3-0 with almost no shot of-- [Joe Pavelski gets hurt] oh dear God! Why do the powers that be hate them enough to kick us while they're down?! I know they called a major penalty on Vegas despite it being a freak accident, but how is that gonna help?!
*Later* - Wait, they scored 4 goals on the ensuing 5-minute powerplay to take the lead? Well, that's cool! Oh wait, Vegas tied it up again, pack it up, you're not gonna win this one. [Sharks win in OT] Huh. I'll be damned.
*Western Conference Second Round, 2019* - Look at you go! You carried that momentum and even beat the Avalanche in 7 games! Ignore that there was yet another controversial call that went in your favor, you are headed to the Western Conference Finals! All we need to do is beat the Blues just like we did in 2016! This is the year, boys, I can feel it!
*Western Conference Final, 2019* - My feelings lied to me. The Blues get their revenge for 2016 and continue their Cinderella run, while the clock strikes midnight on the Sharks and they go home. Even with a THIRD controversial call going their way, they still blew it. Goes to show that maybe they didn't belong here. Can't believe I didn't see this coming. Worst of all, I can't even drown the pain because I'm out of bleach.
*2018 and 2019 Stanley Cup Finals* - Remember what I said about having more success than the Capitals and Blues combined? Just forget I ever said anything.
*June 17, 2019* - Erik Karlsson may not have the production we thought due to injuries (shocker, I know), but that's okay. We can still re-sign him for-- JESUS CHRIST DOUG!!! $11.5 MILLION PER YEAR FOR 8 YEARS?!?!? This is the kind of deal you make AFTER you win a Cup, not before!!
*July 1, 2019* - Okay that was bad, but Doug can still make up for it. All he has to do is re-sign Joe Pavelski. He's the captain, he's a guy the players will rally around, so he'd surely wanna stay, right? Aaaand he signed with the Stars. Fuck.
*October 9, 2019* - Well, at least they brought Patrick Marleau back. Yay?
*December 11, 2019* - The Sharks get in a huge slump for the first part of the season. Peter DeBoer is shown the door for his failures. Vegas can have fun not winning any Cups.
*2020* - The rest of the season turns into a shitshow. They are once again a punching bag and are forced to ship off Patrick Marleau to the Penguins at the deadline. When the season comes to an abrupt end due to a global pandemic, the Sharks are one of seven teams not invited to the expanded playoffs. Well, at least we'll get a high draft pick for being dead last in the Western Conf-- what do you mean we sent it to Ottawa in the Karlsson trade?!
*2020 Draft Lottery* - That pick ends up being the 3rd overall selection. I tried to warn you, Doug. Sigh, at least we got a first round pick at the deadline. Thanks for the overpayment, Tampa! Have fun with Barclay Goodrow!
*Stanley Cup Final, 2020* - Barclay Goodrow goes on to be a big depth piece in back-to-back Stanley Cup victories for the Tampa Bay Lightning because of course he does.
*2020 Offseason* - For the second time in his career, Patrick Marleau returns to San Jose. Well, at least he and Jumbo Joe can retire here togeth-- Jumbo signed with the Leafs? Sigh.
*2021* - To the surprise of no one, the Sharks are a bottom-feeder in their re-aligned division. The only positive is Patrick Marleau breaking the all-time games played record. That and the anniversary jerseys, those are sweet.
*2021 Offseason* - Martin Jones gets to go to the goaltender graveyard known as the Flyers. Fitting for him. Meanwhile, there's a chance Jumbo Joe comes to retire as a Shark... aaaand he signed with Florida. Hope they can at least get him a Cup.
*October 18, 2021* - Evander Kane is a fucking idiot who has so many off-ice issues he might as well be an NFL player. He is suspended 21 games for a fake vaccine card, eventually waived, and sent down to the AHL. His contract is eventually terminated...only for him to sign with the Oilers not too long after. He's their problem now!
*2022* - Even with the divisions being back to normal, the Sharks are once again a punching bag. Doug Wilson resigns due to health issues at the end of the year. The time has officially come to rebuild. Only problem is all the long-term contracts. Ah well, at least we're not as screwed as Vegas.
*July 13, 2022* - And now Brent Burns is gone, traded off to chase a ring with the Hurricanes. It hurts, but it was unfortunately time to do so. The package doesn't hurt either.
*July 26, 2022* - David Quinn is your new head coach. Well you could definitely do worse, I guess?
*August 29, 2022* - We can do better than Adin Hill in net. Let's trade him to Vegas for a fourth-round pick. They can have fun trying to win anything with him!
*2023* - Great news, Sharks fans! Erik Karlsson has finally returned to his past form and puts up a Norris-worthy season! Unfortunately, the catch is that the rest of the team is still a bunch of shit. Players are sold off at the deadline, and you're still deep in the basement. Good thing I got some more bleach.
*2023 Stanley Cup Finals* - The Vegas Golden Knights, thanks to the efforts of your old friend Adin Hill, have won the Stanley Cup. You have now lost the only thing you can hold over their heads.
*August 6, 2023* - Erik Karlsson is now gone. It's a massive three-team trade that sends him to the Penguins. Oh well, time to bring out the tanks!

2018 offseason: After last year’s embarrassment we need to go big this year boys. Acquire Mike Hoffman from the Senators just to dump him into the dumpster fire that is the Florida Panthers two hours later for some picks. All this done to dump cap and set up to do something huge in the offseason. The Sharks fail sign John Tavares but decide to go with plan B.....Erik Fucking Karlsson. Now the boys are getting serious. Acquiring the best defenseman in the game via trade and Evander Kane’s big contract extension are proof that the Sharks are going all in this year. They know that time might be running out so they decide to make it count while they still can. Sure Karlsson is injury prone now, he only has one year left on his contract, and he said beforehand that he had no commitments to re-sign with you but still, it’s Erik Fucking Karlsson. Just the thought of him and Brent Burns together on the same powerplay unit is enough to make the league afraid of you and consider you favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Should be an interesting season.
2018-19 season: Karlsson struggles out of the gate, can’t stay healthy for shit, and is extremely inconsistent when he is healthy. At least he can still play in the all-star game this year.....and then he misses the rest of the regular season.....well shit. Regardless though you have another good season. Brent Burns has gone super saiyan again and is having another fantastic year. The powerplay is just about as good as advertised and you nab Gustav Nyquist at the trade deadline to help you on your playoff run. You even manage to secure home ice advantage in a first round rematch with the Knights. Should be an interesting series and you’ll get Karlsson back for the playoffs as well. Let’s see what happens.
2019 1st round: You’re losing 3-0 in a god damn game 7 on home ice and you’re about to an expansion team for the 2nd year in a row!? Are you serious boys!?
Late 3rd period: Nevermind, the hockey gods reward you with a 5 minute powerplay and you come back to score 4 powerplay goals en route to winning the series in 7. Sure Vegas May have tied the game late but you manage to complete the comeback in overtime as Barclay Goodrow goes from the guy who almost cost you game 6 and the guy who got almost no ice time all game 7 long to the savior you needed. Well done boys. You’re going to play the Avalanche in the next round and you erase last year’s embarrassment.
2019 2nd round: You manage to beat the Avalanche in 7 games and now you’re going back to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 3 years. Sure you were expected to beat the Avalanche much easier than you did but you still beat them nonetheless. Cup ambitions are high in the Bay Area.
2019 Western Conference Finals: You get beaten to a pulp by your choking brothers in the St. Louis Blues. A team dead last in the NHL in early January and you lose to them in 6 games. I guess having those refs kicked out for the rest of the playoffs didn’t help your case after all now did it!? Maybe you should try not having all sorts of injuries to go into a series next time. But wait, this is the Sharks we’re talking about. Even if you were fully healthy going in and even if Erik Karlsson had lived up to your expectations this year you still probably would have found a way to choke the playoffs away. By the way how did Mike Hoffman do in Florida this year?

    • @Bbpagewolf
      @Bbpagewolf Před 5 lety +7

Oh yeah, and now your choking brothers are Stanley Cup Champions. To think when you played them 3 years ago and went to the Finals you couldn’t get it done. Now 3 years later, they beat you and finish the job. More salt in the wound to this joke of a franchise.

Man that Karlsson trade is looking worse and worse for you every single day isn’t it? At least you managed to fleece Tampa Bay out of a 1st round pick for Barclay Goodrow though...I can’t even say that with a straight face.

While I agree that their current core is aging, they have a future core that's still quite young. Hertl, Donskoi, Sorenson, Labanc, ,and Meier are all under 26 years old (notice how they're all forwards. Their only two competent defensemen, Vlasic and Braun, are both 31, which is already a problem), and Jones is still only 28. I think that in terms of goal-scoring, the Sharks are going to be pretty set for a decent stretch of time.
