Faith Salie looks back on the exceptional Fred Rogers, talking with his family and collaborators, and with filmmaker Morgan Neville, director of a new documentary, "Won't You Be My Neighbor."

Aishah Hanani that is so powerful. I felt the emotions. I’m glad he was able to be told that he was loved. Mr. Rogers really changed his life for the better.
Absolutely amazing. You could have plenty of people telling you they love you, and not meaning it. Or you could have had no one telling you that.
But, when Mr Rogers says it to you, you know he means it. You never have to worry, or question the sincerity. You don’t have to be anxious about his love. Because he means it. That’s for damn sure. And that revelation has made my days of ignorantly blissful romantic youth much better in knowing that even if everyone’s love around me is fake- his is real. And that’s something to hold on to forever.

God Loves everyone and died for us all. He is not some made up idea or a thought or a wishing well. Mr. Rogers tried to be like Jesus. He quoted what Jesus spoke and lived the way Jesus taught. “It’s a Beautiful day in the neighborhood...won’t you be my neighbor.” In the Bible 1st John 4:7, and 8 it says ”Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” If you know God you will do what the scripture says, “Love one another.” I believe Mr. Rogers was speaking as an Oracle of God saying “I Love You.” The only reason it was genuine is because he knows that God loves him and never doubted. To everyone here...yes you are loved by me and above all by God. But I cannot love you with out knowing how much God loves me and yes He does love me very much.

My dad abandoned us when I was 3, my childhood was tough growing up in gang infested East LA, I can remember watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood well into my teenage years. It was such a blessing to know that I was important. I share Mr. Rogers with my kids, they love him too.

It used to be that way. But the media and other unsavory groups out there, don't want it that way. They want upset and hate. We need to go back to more of the nice. Because "nice" used to be the norm. And it's the way it should be. With it, there would be a whole lot less hate, war, greed, hunger for power, selfishness, ect..

I'm surprised Mr. Clemmons didn't fully understand the message at the time, but it was very moving to watch his reaction as he recalled when he finally got it. :-)

In the 1960s blacks and whites Never shared pools with one another (except in the Northern states). They were segregated. So a black and white sharing a pool in 1969 was very open-minded..... almost scandalous

That's because that was intentional. Everyone would miss out if they didn't shut up, and what he had to say was very valuable.

I actually made a "Mister Rogers road trip" this past Saturday for my birthday. Went to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington, PA where he visited in a 1984 episode. When the museum closed at the end of the day, I went to Unity Cemetery in Latrobe where Mister Rogers was laid to rest when he passed away and visited for a little while. I then went to Saxonburg and had dinner at the Hotel Saxonburg, where Mister Rogers visited in 1982 to show us what a restaurant was like. It was an awesome trip.

It's worth the drive. I live in Ohio, so it's a bit of a drive for me too. Left Saxonburg about 9:20PM, getting home about 2:15AM due to the heavy rain that came through that night. Was still a great trip. :-)

Reading all these comments, I'm struck by the kindness and love that you all have inside you. It's up to us to follow Fred Rogers' example and make love the root of all our interactions. As flawed individuals we know we will stumble yet it's the getting back up and returning to our commitment that's most important. I'm so happy we get to share admiration of Fred with each other!

The world sorely needs someone like Mr. Rogers now to combat all the hatred and lack of compassion and love for each other. I think he would be ashamed of what we have become in this country and cry bitter tears for all of us.

I always have a tendency to cry when new docu of Fred Rogers comes into the mix. I tried to keep it together to pay attention to the segment. But....I lost it after Francois Clemmons started crying.

When I was 3 I lost my father... the only positive male model in my life was mr. Rogers. He was there every morning to tell me that he loved and cared about me. And when he died I had a dream. He was in a rocking chair under a tree. He had a audience of children we were all crying. He grabbed me put me on his lap and told me he was proud of me and will always be there when I'm sad and it's okay to be sad. But remember at the end of rainstorms there is a rainbow. I was 21 when he died. And he was such a big part of my life it was like I lost another father. To this day when I feel alone I put on a video of him telling me he loves me just the way I am and instantaneous I feel better. They don't make people like that anymore.
Aw, that's beautiful. I believe his tv show was like Dad coming home, changing out of his work clothes so he could play with us, and giving us loving attention and affirmation.
I am sorry you lost your father at such a young age. You have so much hope within yourself, don't ever lose faith.

The vast loneliness of my childhood was punctuated each day by the song I knew by heart, the home I could have walked through with my eyes shut, and the man I knew was kind and gentle without ever having met in real life. I memorized every detail: the refrigerator, what was in the closet, the fabric of the curtains, the artwork in Picture Picture. This is both an indictment of my actual childhood and a profuse love for this show, to admit that I would have rather lived in his Neighborhood, and that one of the only good things I can remember is that I was allowed to watch this show. Thank you Mr. Rogers❤️. I cry as an adult, everytime I hear the closing song--I never wanted you to leave when I was a child and it came to that part of the show.

Mister Rogers is one of the few human beings that have always had my complete respect, gratitude, and appreciation... Definitely one of the greatest human beings that has ever walked this earth... The world is worse off without him. In a time where kindness is looked upon as weakness, we need him more than ever. He is sorely missed... I will always miss this man. Thank you for helping me through my childhood Mister Rogers. I will never forget you.

I am 25 years old and when I have kids it’s Gunna be Mr. Rogers 24/7 in my home. Because I watched these as a kid he impacted me as a kid I know he did without knowing it

It is so difficult to express how our world NEEDS more people like him...more compassion for others, more infinite love in this negative, hate-filled world. Mr. Rogers was one of the greatest people who ever lived, simply because of who he was. He was friendly, warm, spoke tenderly, he was educational, imaginative, humorous, full of love and so open with people and learning new things. Growing up watching his show and hearing him say, "You make each day a special day. And you know how? By just you're being you." He was someone who loved us for simply who we are.

5:07, not many things make you cry. But, the sight of this grown man when his voice breaks, brought a tear in my eyes.
To all those mourning Mr. Fred Rodgers' passing and are wishing for another like Mr. Rodgers --- DO NOT DESPAIR! He was never the only kind, gentle, compassionate human in this human world. It is only that most such personalities have either gone unrecognized or been openly scorned in this world of lawlessness in hardhearted humans.

I used to watch a lot of " Mister Rogers Neighborhood, " in the seventies when I was a young boy. I enjoyed it for all kinds of reasons ( mainly for the trains and music ). After I got older, I didn't think much of Fred Rogers. That changed after the 911 attacks, where Rogers put out a video to help calm people ( manily kids ) down. That video made me reaize that Fred Rogers was the complete human being that we all long to have in our lives: Compasionate, professional and patient. Overall, he showed us all that we shouldn't forget these qualities as we go through our own journeys in life. A truly remarkable man.

I was in 4th grade when he died in 2003. I remember listening to the news on the radio because I had to write about current events. I knew we lost an icon and humanity wouldn't be the same.

I read an article about Mr. Rogers where the interviewer said that at one point while with Mr. Rogers he felt his heart open like an umbrella; I think that’s what Francois Clemons felt also ❤️

Fred Rogers was a much more down to Earth man than Walt Disney.
The best example of a Christian living a Christ-centered life I have ever seen in my life. Thank God for Fred Rogers and those who worked with Him. Did more for me and most other people than a ton of pious egotistical preachers---and it cost us nothing to watch him, but was a totally priceless gift! Thank you Jesus for giving us yourself to save us, and for giving us Fred to show us how wonderful a surrendered life for Christ could be!❤❤❤❤
He was also part of a denomination many fundamentalist and evangelical Christians would call snooty or liberal. Whatever it was, he walked the talk and never flaunted his faith in the Lord.
He would had made a great president. He represented the good in this world. I used to watch his tv show growing up.

Damn, it's great that this year marks 50 years when his show began, but at the same time, it's a shame that this year ALSO marks 15 years since he passed away.

Will Herb A white Protestant minister from the suburbs telling a black gay man from the inner city that, "I love you just the way you are." ... and he meant every word of it. That is powerful. That is the power of love.

Some people would say it is hard to believe that Mr. Rogers was really THAT good, that he had to have flaws. He did. It is evident just from listening to him that he probably dealt with a great deal of insecurity, and maybe inside he wasn't as comfortable in his own skin as the average person. But whatever his flaws, I think they drove him to be the man he was, and drove him to try and ease the insecurities of the children that he was probably very much more alike with than we could ever comprehend.

They need to start showing his show again, even if it is reruns or bring it to dvd. Kids of today's generation and tomorrow's NEED his show. He knew how to get kids to understand how the world works and make it entertaining to them at the same time.
I’m fifty years old. Whenever I have a really tough day - or even a medium day - I watch Mr. Rogers, because he reminds us that kindness matters and that we all matter.

It made me tear up to see Officer Clemmons break down in tears after finally getting Mr. Rogers message to him.
He helped me understand adoption. I was 6yo when I found out I was adopted. He helped so many children deal with so many issues. I miss his show.
Grew up with Mr. Rogers. Had a way of explaining things to children that'd make them understand or help them with adult issues that could be confusing and way beyond their years. Like a gradual prep for the real world. World could use a large dose of him right about now.
I grew up watching him and my heart broke, when he passed away, but that was only my 2nd saddest day in my life!!!

I started life in an orphanage in the UK in 1968. There was no Mr Rogers on TV in England when I was young. I really wish there had been someone like this for me to learn from.
God bless Mr. Rogers with the way the world is nowadays we really need more people like him more than ever.

I feel bad about not liking this show as a child. He was a great man regardless.
I had a good childhood. I didn’t need Mr. Rogers to fill in for something or to help me through something. I watched him because it was fun and my mother loved it and wanted me to watch it. As a child, i didn’t understand why she used to encourage me to watch it, but as an adult, I absolutely understand why. I taught littles (K-2) in public schools for six years and I truly believe that I was a better teacher from having watched Mr. Rogers. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Mr. Rogers was one of the people who helped shape the way I deal with young children to this day. I love you, Mr. Rogers. May you Rest In Peace.

I believe Fred Rogers message to all is to love universally. To care about others and the impact you make in their lives. It's so easy to let cynical thoughts control your mind and actions but harder to allow true love to be shared universally without judgement. We need to remember his message.

I also watched the program and I really believe that he was talking to you and he really did; he was one of a kind and a television icon and will be missed very much. Taught me a whole lot as a kid and I am forever grateful as an adult in this world today!!!

I watched this show from the first day it hit PBS, then with my children & now get to hare with my grandchildren. The best wholesome show ever made for all ages. Mr. Rogers having you come into our home everyday was a blessed day! We miss you terribly.

I'm sure the cartoon version that is playing now on TV, won't ask that again, right? Wow! A legacy indeed!
The cartoon is done with modern sensibilities in mind (good or bad) & the title character is the SON of the original, so Daniel Jr. won't exactly be like his shy, reserved "Stri-ped" father, as he's more outgoing & ready for adventure.
It's sad he had to discuss this but little minds need comfort as people do now in the world.

Fred Rogers neighborhood w one of my favorite television shows to watch with my grandmother+l still consider him a special person like he always says l am 😅
I had a night job and when I came home after a bad time.at work I would watch Mr. Rogers with my children. It helped.
Fred Rogers was just a great MAN. Few people have had as much impact on everyone.
I try to emulate such a man.

Mister Rogers is a perfect person, genuinely, it is so hard for celebrities from back then to keep their image because their “true” side ends up coming out, but when more and more of Rogers side comes out, we just keep learning about what a gift to the world he was.

This is what the US needs more of. Kids as well as adults. We need more positive figures on TV like Mister Rogers. It was a blessing to grow up watching his show. My kids like Daniel Tiger but its not the same. No one can ever top Mr. Rogers.

I was born with hemifacial microsia, I am half death, and I am the only person in the world without a thyroid gland along with one other person, as far as my doctors know. I always felt as if I was different and not like other kids because of how I look, but my siblings and I watched Mr. Rogers all the time. He taught me that I am no different. So if there is a heaven, and Mr. Rogers is looking down, then I would like to say thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done not just for me, but for every kid who ever watched him. You were such an amazing man with the biggest heart. I hope you know how much of an impact you’ve had on millions of kids. Thank you.

I'm one of Fred Rogers' biggest fans, and I have been for years. He is one of my favorite celebrities (even though he's been dead for fifteen years).
I loved loved loved Mr Rogers! He was so caring and understanding and knew what children felt and what they where feeling we need another Mr Rogers in 2022!
