  • Learn how to color skin tones with alcohol markers in this adult coloring tutorial!
    Coloring skin can be one of the most intimidating things to try when you first pick up alcohol markers - but after some practice and a few important tips, you’ll find it’s easy, fun, and rewarding.
    Today, I’ll show you how to color skin tones with the Ohuhu Skin Tone Alcohol Art Markers.
    In this video, I’ll show you how to find the right colors for a variety of skin tones, use reference photos, and how to color in a face step-by-step using alcohol markers.
    This video is sponsored by Ohuhu, who have generously sent me the 24 set of skin tone markers as a part of this collaboration. You can see the full article I wrote for them on their website (link coming soon!)

    If you're struggling with blending your markers, you can also try layering your pencils on top of your markers! Here's how: czcams.com/video/3J9mcwFqGtg/video.html

    Tip: you know how sometimes the names on the markers rub off? I found out that if I get some clear tape, cut some that is as big as the name area and stick it on, it seals the names and numbers on the cap so you don’t have to rewrite it if they come off, especially if your handwriting is messy like mine! 🥰✌️

      +Lori Ann Ferraioli you should be able to apply the same techniques with the Ohuhu markers that you learn from videos about other alcohol markers.
      I think the most important thing is to just give it a go, and keep practicing! I actually did this same page about 6 times before doing this tutorial, so I could try different methods and practice my technique. Even with all that practice, I still made lots of changes on the fly and mistakes in the final picture! So don’t be too hard on yourself. We are all learning!
      It can help to print some faces smaller so you can practice without using as much ink. I printed my picture about 1/3 size for practicing this one.

    Adding darker grey colours in areas of deep shadow is a real game changer. I even go all the way to black sometimes, even with lighter tones. It really gives a picture depth. I also like to use coloured pencils for rim lighting, especially when the rim lighting is a different hue. Great video though thanks.

    Fellow Aussie here, Linda. Fantastic video, I really enjoyed it and, I learnt a lot (not bad for just a mere 23.46 minutes of my life).
    I purchased this skin colour set of Ohuhu markers about 18 months ago but had no idea how to use them until I watched this video today. When I purchased the set, I did fill in the swatch sheet and, also decided to make larger swatches of each colour, using a Jane Davenport face stamp but, I had no idea about blending other colours in. Really when you think about it, we blend foundation and colour corrector and other products on our face, it makes sense you would need to blend markers when trying to create skin tone. I just never really knew how to do it on paper.
    Last week, I dragged out the skin tone set to colour another face I had stamped (a Dylusions image) but I didn't blend...just used one colour (which was coincidentally the base colour you used in this video). At that time, I had stamped many of the same face stamps but only coloured one. So today, I had some blank faces ready to go with this video.
    I didn't get the nice smooth blend that you did and, I had three attempts. I think with the first attempt, I was too heavy-handed with the darkest colour. My face stamp is quite small and I think I shaded a too-wide a section. So, on the second attempt, I shaded less width but, think I brought the shading too far down the face frame. By my third attempt, I was much better but opted to only blend the two lighter, and not the darker shade.
    It's okay and much better than the one I coloured last week but, I still need a lot of practise.
    I watched a few of your other videos before landing on this one...going to binge watch a whole stack of your other videos now. How awesome that it's the weekend and I will have time to practise with each video.
    Thanks Sarah.

    so glad I found your video, I have not long treated myself to a complete new pen set and sold my old set which I just couldn't get on with, however my new 120 set didn't include skin tone shades and as the same brand didn't have any stock of the skin tones and I was too impatient to wait I found Ohuhu, very reasonably prices and what looked a great colour selection for the skin, I am a complete novice at colouring and can never seem to get the shading right, your video has given me an insight of how just how to do this, still not done it yet but I do have my image ready to start now just need to find that reference photo, so thank you for all the additional tips you have given.

    The swatch chart they include is a nice touch, but it still isn’t the best paper imo. You should print out a blank chart on whatever paper you like to use markers on, or create your own swatch chart on the paper you would normally use the markers on. This is the only way to really tell what the colors will look like in your project.

    I just ordered the 320 Color set of the Ohuhu which are Chisel/Fine Tip, because I wanted all the colors, but then, I also wanted the brush tip, which only comes in the 216 count, so I ordefed that as well! Ordered it on prime day so I was able to save $80 total between both the sets. And I'm going to have lots of double colors, but Ill have 216 of those colors in Chisel, Brush & Fine tip.
    Plus I already had the small set of fine point/brush Hair & skin tone colors, not the ones that come in the bag, but the slender markers that come in the flat plastic case.
    They wouldn't ship them to Alaska, so I had to ship them to a friend in the lower 48, and she then shipped them to me. Of course, she sent them slow boat, not priotity because of the cost. He says the two large sets were 22 pounds each!
    Thats 44 pounds worth of Markers I have coming in! I can't wait! Cost $80 to ship from Virginia to Juneau Alaska!
    I've been playing with the skin & Hair tones for a while. I love using the skin tones as neutral back ground colors for doing floral coloring pages.
    The Crayola Colors of the World is 24 Skin Tones and they make beautiful backgrounds for doing floral coloring pages. Making the greenery and bright flowers really stand out!

    I'm just now starting to play with alcohol markers at age 45. I kinda laughed at Jazza's video where he compared alcohol to water based markers, and you could tell he didn't play with water base markers. He was saying things about how you couldn't layer and couldnt blend and couldn't do all these things with water base markers. And the entire time I wats thinking... Um... Well, maybe you can't if you don't know how. And yes it maybe easier with alcohol because there created to do that. But I've been doing all those same things with water base markers fir 40+ years because that's what I had access too.
    Up here in Juneau Alaska, we don't have an art store, and before the internet, we couldn't order things like fancy markers from Japan. We went to our local grocery store and bought what they had in the 5 foot of office supplies.... I remember how happy I was when Kmart came to town and we got what we called "Real" art supplies in a 12 foot shopping isle! Then Kmart left & walmart came in. Then walmart closed about 8 years ago. We do have a JoAnnes Fabric Store, but were stocked with supplies stores downsouth cant sell, then send it up here to us because were so short on anything, everything sells up here.
    I bought lots of different marker brands, including cheep ones, just to have a variety. I was exited last year when i got my Crayola 64 marker box in... Noso happy when i found out 16 of them were repeat colors....
    But I do a ton of shading and blanding in waterbase markers. If I knew anything about videoing, or had any equipment to do it, I'd love to do a video on how to blend and do shading and all that on waterbase markers.
    If anyone would like to see some of my floral coloring pages. Just look up Kollean Gouyton on Facebook. Im the onLy one on there.... I really need to get my coloring pages uploaded to my studio group. Mostly just my custom models are uploaded there. Ill try to get more art uploaded to my studio, Stone Wolf Creations. Not the Museum group, just plain Stone Wolf Creations, thats my studio. The museum is for my model horse museum that im shipping south to its new location....

    Thank you. It turned out lovely, but do you not need to buy special paper for alcohol markers which means you can’t use the adult colouring books ?

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  Před 2 lety +2

      I use them in coloring books all the time, you just can’t draw on the page on the other side, as they do bleed through normal paper.
      I like to use these a lot alongside pencils- I have a few videos about this on my channel!

    I have the full set of skintones from Arteza called everblends. Would you consider a review of those?

    What’s the best paper to print coloring pages on for alcohol markers? Preferably that fits in a standard printer😅 (letter size for USA)

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  Před 3 lety +1

      Look for a paper listed as “bleed proof” or that is called “marker paper”

    I have a pack of 120 alcohol markers and I am kind of suffering with blending the colors and I’ve seen a lot of videos of how to blend the markers and I don’t really know how to do it

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  Před 2 lety +1

      Best to just start practicing! The videos will help, but at a certain point, you’ll only improve through trying it for yourself.

    Crying because Amazon ships alcohol based Ohuhu markers to all of Australia EXCEPT Tasmania, because we’re not… real? 😭
    What if… you reviewed the water based Ohuhu markers 🫠

  • @sherryscoloringandpaintingcorn

    also do you blend with the lightest marker or the colorless blender?

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  Před 3 lety

      +Sherry's coloring and painting corner the colorless blender isn’t actually for blending. It’s basically just a colorless marker. They should really consider renaming them because it causes a lot of confusion!
      I always use the colors that I’m already blending with.

    Fun fact, ohuhu is a Hawaiian (I think) and it's actually pronounced ("owahoo") they went lazy with the spelling and that's why so many people mess up the pronunciation.
