I like the idea of buying two books then putting them together. It benefits the illustrators who work so hard to produce quality images and you can highlight your hard work by putting them in a book.

Good video, I always enjoy watching. I have a few tips Id like to share that I have learned from taking several marker classes. 1- To get less streaks you need to do multiple layers, that allows the fibers of the paper to become saturated with the color. 2- when using gray for shading another way is to put the gray down 1st allow it to dry and then do the fill color over the area. 3 to make sure you have good coverage the back of the paper should also show what you colored in a solid look. 4 I know you didn't cover using the colorless blender but just a tip the colorless blender should be thought of as a bleach pen not really a blender. When trying to remove a mistake, press the colorless blender at the edge of the mistake and in a pressing motion pushing the color back toward the line. It also helps have piece of paper under and move to a clean area. if having a hard time removing dark colors you may have to use this method several times

I know you probably meant well but everything you wrote is already in her workshops done in the past years…. I know it shouldn’t, but it always gets to me when somebody like you that doesn’t seem to know much about her talent and her channel decides that you need to teach her what you know because you think she does not know much about markers (or any other art matter). She is a very knowledgeable artist and colorist.. She is so nice, as is her husband Steve. They work really hard to provide us with tools and knowledge so we can better our art. But before you decided you had to teach her things, you should have taken the time to look at the extent of her videos so you would have known it was really unnecessary what you wrote. Instead, like I said, you should have taken the time to experience the vastness of the topics that she covers. A whole lot is free, but some gems become available to you as a member. Like everything you said about markers and there’s a whole lot more. All her videos, all her workshops, it’s all there for you to learn… but most importantly, she will never overload us with too much information at once. So, this video was not intended to teach everything about markers…. That’s why she IS a GREAT person to transmit her knowledge. She knows how to do it and how to organize it. I have developed great respect for the work and time investment that Jennifer and Steve put into their channel. It’s probably why I went on such a tangent… it’s just that people that seem nice in wanting to share tips are really people feeling superior to others hence the « nice tips » that are disguising an ego trip. My opinion is that Jennifer and Steve do not need that kind of « help ». I hope I have not offended Jennifer and Steve in any way with my response.

@@lesiaoneill8569I. Thank you for your input. I am pretty sure that they were not annoyed or offended by her comments. I was… I did specify that it got to me…… for once I decided to comment… wich I had never done before. Usually, I never read comments. Why I read it this time and felt the need to respond? I don’t know. But I did. I felt the need to. That was it. As you said, I am entitled to my opinion and tried to convey my thoughts in a civil manner. Also, just in case I was misunderstood, when I said I hoped they were not offended, I meant that I hoped « I » had not offended them/ made them feel uneasy by my comments. One thing I disagree with you though it’s that people should take a few minutes to look at the content of the CZcams channel (like the organized list of videos - takes 15 sec) before giving so much of their own wonderful knowledge…. I stick to my opinion that the person wanted to « outshine » or « show off ». I know people have the right to comment as they wish (like I did)… maybe I am just so fed up with all those « so knowledgeable people » that think they know more than everybody else after watching a few videos…. With no intention of offending, Well, again, thank you for your response.

I just got my first set of alcohol markers a few days ago. It’s a small 48 color ohuhu set from Amazon. I googled “how to color with alcohol markers” and found your video.
This video was so very helpful! I have been coloring just to color, very bold and full. I love coloring mandalas and I’m currently coloring Crayolas mindful meditations mandala coooring book(got it from Target I think). I started using prismacolor colored pencils, I just love them, always have. Then I saw a video from other artists I follow and they were using alcohol markers and I love the way the colors look on paper. So I got myself some. Now I have all these mediums and want to know how to color the way you guys do. lol I’m 32yo and I’m a newbie with this. So thank you for providing this video. I really love the multi media approach. The 4th square is beautiful.

  • @BeardedBarley1
    @BeardedBarley1 Před 4 měsíci

Loved the tutorial. If I were new to coloring, I would have found it all extremely helpful.
But personally I like #4 the best in that I have more control over the outcome. However, I find that when I work on coloring pictures, I apply all of the techniques you showed and more. So it’s so true it really is just the tip of the iceberg in learning to color with markers and colored pencils. But you did really well in getting those most important basics across in your video.
For example in expanding more techniques using markers and colored pencils, I usually use white colored pencil and a lighter version of the base marker color but with colored pencils for the white highlights after using all three marker techniques. I also use a colorless blender sometimes to pick up some of the marker in those highlighted areas before applying the lighter colored pencils in order to have more impact. I don’t have to use white gel pen as highlights that way because the colored pencil stands out nicely on top of the marker alone. Also, I seamlessly blend the colored pencil work and the marker work together with the lighter color of the marker but with colored pencil. And if it still looks like I’ve used colored pencil, I get out a colorless blender and/or a colorless alcohol marker and melt them together.
In order to make my objects appear more 3D, I tend to put shading toward the base of a portion of an object if the direction of light allows. For example, at the base of the frosting near the cupcake paper, I would add a bit of shading, too. That way, it looks less like a cutout and more rounded like how frosting does in real life.
Please know that was no burn. What I’m talking about is s bit more advanced as I’m sure that you get into in your other videos people pay for to see. I’m just pointing out why I apply all the techniques and then why I personally like #4 best when I do a bit more with the colored pencils for a certain look I’m going for by using mixed media. The way it turns out for me is a flawless look without blotchy marker lines and without the texture of the colored pencil coming through. They both somehow work together this way in order to bring about a kind of cohesion I’m going for instead of being left with an odd aftereffect of it being obvious that two medias were being used.
However, some people really love that look and have mastered it. And that’s wonderful. This is just my way. We all just have our own way of doing things because of a certain look we are trying to bring about for our own enjoyment.
Again, what you showed here is an excellent beginner’s course as you said. Truer words could not have been spoken. So extremely helpful. Also, I just love how pleasant you are in your videos. A spoonful of sugar certainly does help the medicine go down. Hahahaha! Thanks so much for freely sharing some of your tips and tricks with us. It means so much to a lot of us out here.

Hi--I've been an Academy Member for some months now and love it! Thank you for a fascinating lesson on alcohol markers!! I just got my set of 320 Ohuhu and have NOT swatched them---but organized them by color. Not easy in the bag they come in, as each marker seems to ''resent' you putting it next to another one--and, so, shoves it aside! LOLOL! I never thought of using gray for shading my Ohuhu Alcohol Markers---seems like a lot of work (just finding the right shades)--but it has a lovely shading effect, N0. 3 is the most dynamic----but No. 4 would probably be easier for me, as I'm used to working with colored pencils! Thanks again for a lovely, fun lesson. Lynn in NYC

Thanks for the tip using a book to keep track of markers you are using on a design. I stamp and keep track on a separate sheet of paper that always gets lost.

I don't want to sound like a drawing snob but I don't color often. However, I really enjoy your techniques and will incorporate in my art and coloring pages.

Technique #4 is not only suitable for markers BUT...
I also use that technique with watercolor pencils and Derwent Inktense.

Tip: when shading, you should consider the position of the light source.
In your shaded cupcakes, I saw 3 different angles in your images

Loved this video, thank you! I learnt a lot from #2,3 and 4!
I think posca pens work alright on top of pencil ❤ I'm yet to find a good white gel pen. I did like jelly roll but they dry out very fast.

I loved this tutorial Jennifer. I hardly use my Blick alcohol markers because blending with them is so much more difficult than colored pencils. I think my favorite is #3, however I learned a lot from the gray shading in #2. In #4 when you use the markers as a base layer, can you use paraffin oil to blend the pencils after you are finished with the pencil blending? Thank you for all the knowledge you share!🥰

Do you have a best budget alcohol markers on Amazon? So many choices and with my budget I'm trying to stay under $40 and choose best option. I have Star Joy pencils and Aen Art gels now and need to replace my alcohol markers that are awful

I have asked this once before but does the book that you recommended for the markers, work for the other 320 set? I bought the book not realizing that I don’t have that specific line of ohuhu markers.

I am going to try and ask again since my question has gone unanswered. Does the Ohuhu workbook work with the Ohuhu Oahu 320 Colors Dual Tips Alcohol Art Markers? I have been asking and asking with no answer. I bought the book and didn’t realize that I had the other 320 set.
