Author Sam Harris argues that Islam -- like most religions -- is not simply a peaceful faith misrepresented by extremists. "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," says Harris. "To call Islam a religion of peace ... is completely delusional."
    -----
In this highly anticipated, explosive new book, the author of The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation calls for an end to religion's monopoly on morality and human values. In The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values to dismantle the most common justification for religious faith -- that a moral system cannot be based on science.
The End of Faith ignited a worldwide debate about the validity of religion. In its aftermath, Harris discovered that most people, from secular scientists to religious fundamentalists, agree on one point: Science has nothing to say on the subject of human values. Even among religious fundamentalists, the defense one most often hears for belief in God is not that there is compelling evidence that God exists, but that faith in Him provides the only guidance for living a good life. Controversies about human values are controversies about which science has officially had no opinion. Until now.
Morality, Harris argues, is actually an undeveloped branch of neuroscience, and answers to questions of human value can be visualized on a "moral landscape" -- a space of real and potential outcomes whose peaks and valleys correspond to human states of greater or lesser wellbeing. Different ways of thinking and behaving -- different cultural practices, ethical codes, modes of government, etc. -- translate into movements across this landscape. Such changes can be analyzed objectively on many levels, ranging from biochemistry to economics, but they have their crucial realization as experiences in the human brain.
Bringing a fresh, secular perspective to age-old questions of right and wrong, and good and evil, Harris shows that we know enough about the human brain and its relationship to events in the world to say that there are right and wrong answers to the most pressing questions of human life. Because such answers exist, cultural relativism is simply false -- and comes at increasing cost to humanity. And just as there is no such thing as Christian physics or Muslim algebra, there can be no Christian or Muslim morality. Using his expertise in philosophy and neuroscience, along with his experience on the front lines of our "culture wars," Sam Harris delivers a game-changing argument about the future of science and about the real basis of human cooperation. - Berkeley Arts and Letters
Sam Harris is an American non-fiction author, and CEO of Project Reason. He received a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA, and is a graduate in philosophy from Stanford University. He has studied both Eastern and Western religious traditions, along with a variety of contemplative disciplines, for twenty years. He is a proponent of scientific skepticism and is the author of The End of Faith (2004), which won the 2005 PEN/Martha Albrand Award, Letter to a Christian Nation (2006), a rejoinder to criticism of his first book, and The Moral Landscape (2010).

"That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life-unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land-it will be as if they killed all of humanity [...]." - Quran 5:32
Your problem is that spreading "mischief or corruption in the land" and "waging war" are not well defined terms. According to the highly regarded muslim scholar ibn Kathir for example it can simply mean "oppose, contradict or disbelieve in Islam".
It goes on in the next verse:
"Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and spread mischief in the land is death, crucifixion, cutting off their hands and feet on opposite sides, or exile from the land." - Quran 5:33

Religious extremists' beliefs and actions are always directly against their religions' teachings and beliefs. It's like if someone claims he's Christian and then guns down a kindergarten proclaiming his religion tells him to do it. Sam would say that proves Christianity is bad and violent. Even though that act would be against the most important, core beliefs of Christianity. Islam is the exception to this.

In fact, "Hamas" (abbreviation for a political movement in Gaza named Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya) is different than the Arabic noun "hamas" (which isn't an abbreviation and usually describes a state of enthusiasm or excitement and is often used in positive and non-political contexts.)

@@jeannedarc7533, I'm not arguing with you. Yahweh has a book called the "Holy Bible" and writes before English exists the word "hamas" and it has been translated into a word in English and that is "violence."

Might I suggest to you that if Muslims pick the guy who already had two times, was ruined to prosper in the sense hatred grew under Trump and denied the desire of American women in the sense we did not get Hillary Clinton, and finally froze the vote in six states to give us an image of his time, then we are very close to the time the whole world will melt in a fervent heat.
Does that seem right to you? I don't care. Read the following:
"Allah Obama ab (in dark outer garment) dama (I will become) elyown (the god over all things)." - Isaiah 14:14
"Yahweh is the head of a force of armies, who can plan to frustrate? If His hand is stretched out who can turn it back?" - Isaiah 14:27
"For the year is the year of the brought down king, Ahaz ("ahaz" means "he has grasp the ten"). He is dead is the oracle to come." - Isaiah 14:28
"Rejoice not Palestine though now thee be whole, for the rod who struck has been broken. The serpent is at the root with a venom. It shall go forth as a fruit, a flying forth from the serpent." - Isaiah 14:29
"Those most hopeless shall lie down in bonds, and shall die at the root in need, for their remnant will be slain." - Isaiah 14:30
"Wail at the judgment, cry out city as you melt, O Palestine now whole. For smoke from the North, and none shall break rank." - Isaiah 14:31
So how come Barack Hussein Obama gains the Islamic prostration and then melts immediately afterwards? Probably because here are the thoughts of Xi and Putin while contemplating the idea of prostrating five times a day for seven years.
"They that see thee shall squint their eyes, saying, "This the man that shakes the whole world? He shook merely the region of the first."" - Isaiah 14:16
You see Xi and Putin won't believe it until Revelation 11:7-15 fully fulfills the prophecy enough for them to believe it. They see the power of Christ Jesus and yet remain here as opposed to being accepted by the one true God and so they rebel against a dipshit who should never have been picked by Islamic Muslims. He already removed three kings in Egypt, Libya, and Tunesia. That being an Anti-Christ things accomplished, so when he picks ten kings to rule with him for one literal hour they get only enough time to piss their pants in Islam as they realize Xi and Putin are not impressed.

The truth is every ideology in earth will have to violently face other ideologies, best example is that German nationalism caused the biggest war in history aka WW2 back in 1945.
We can all do the same thing that you commented about every ideology/religion.
Look I can do the same with Buddhism, a religion that is considered as the most harmless religion in the world:
      *Buddhists vs Taoism*
      *Buddhists vs Muslims*
      *Buddhists vs Hindus*
*Buddhists vs Buddhists* (Mahâyâna vs Vajrayâna)
      *Buddhists slaughtering Muslims in Myanmar*
      *Buddhists vs Sinhaleses*
See, it's easy. You got to be realistic; *the only thing that humans can share in peace is death*. Even without Islam, WW1 and WW2 would have existed. A bon entendeur, salut.

The armenian genocides, vaginally impaling of girls, assyrian genocides, greek genocides etc. were all done by the caliphates in the name of allah.
Yes, I don't blame islam for some of the crimes committed by muslims rulers against religious minorities .
The raiding of caravans before the battle of badr by muhammed & his companions were for war booties, the attack on the people of Taif were unprovoked, the raping of jewish girl Safiyah after Muhammad killed her husband, father & brothers were crimes against humanity, muhammad killed many for rejecting islam.
(Are you a sunni or shia ?
You studied the hadith & also any tafseers?)
Since when did the christians killed other religious minorities in the "name of jesus"apart from the retaliation they made during the medieval ages?
FYI i'm agnostic living in a muslim(sunni) country.

+RulerL0rd A belief - on its own - is not necessarily a lie. The substance of a specific belief, the logical foundation of that belief, and whether that belief is subject to the influence of modification through reason and observation are some factors one might consider in discerning as to whether a specific belief is either invalid or unreliable. However, "belief" by itself cannot be considered a lie.
There's also clearly an issue with the statement that there is "no such thing as core beliefs, or beliefs." Literature, art, science... everything about the human experience would suggest otherwise. People maintain core beliefs and principals by which they interpret the world and interact with those around them. It's possible to maintain beliefs about the physical world that are subject to change. It's also possible to maintain beliefs about the immaterial: morality and ethics (that are equally subject to change).
Of course, there *is* "only what exists and what does not." Beliefs exist, though. The abstract exists even though it is immaterial.

I know many muslims in real life, most of them are nice people but for most, religion comes first even if it means violence. If a mullah or religious preacher asks to"unalive" someone for any disrespect or belonging to other religion, you'd be surprised to see how quickly they can turn against you even if you were friends with them.
This is exactly I can't get behind a lot of crisis in islamic nations. I feel bad for many of those civilians but under the right circumstances, they wouldn't hesitate to harm or harass me for not belonging to their religion, the funny thing is that in some places it's even religiously permitted to do so. At the end of the day, islam is everything for them, so it's best that others keep that in mind when engaging with muslims

      - The quran mentions how Allah gave Iron to the Earth and that Iron doesn't naturally come from Earth. Many people think that Iron comes from Earth naturally but now Scientists this century have discovered that Iron doesn't come from this World, and that it actually came from an astroid by chance.
      - The quran mentions waves beneath the sea in a verse. At first, many people were confused by this, however it has been proven by physiologists that there are in fact waves beneath the ocean
      - the Quran mentions a lot of prophecies which are coming true today. It states that people will use the verses of the Quran clearly out of context and use it against Muslims. This happens today. It states that people will not pray their prayers properly and in a rush and that sins will be taken lightly. This happens today. It states that children will disrespect their parents and have authority over them. This is clearly happening today. The Quran states that throughout the World, there will be tall buildings everywhere, and that people will compete for the tallest building. This happens today.
The Quran states that 'no, if he doesn't desist we will surely drag him by his forelock. A lying, shining forelock. Scientists in the 1970s have discovered that when you lie/deceive, your prefrontal cortex is triggered. The prefrontal cortex is situated in the forelock.

Christianity was a small cult before the late Roman Empire declared it the official religion, and later various European nations adopted it for political reasons. Islam was spread throughout the Middle East and Africa via conquest over the course of centuries. Even Buddhism was spread by the Mongols conquering much of Asia, as well as various Chinese dynasties exerting pressure on smaller nations in that region.
Since Jainism rejects violence, it is unfortunately doomed to have few followers, even in its native land of India-let alone anywhere else.
It’s the same reason why the Amish and traditional (non-evangelical) Quakers and Unitarians are such small groups. Nonviolent belief systems, by definition, don’t force people to convert or subjugate “heretics” or those who don’t believe. So the only ones who end up following them are those born into them, or the rare spiritual “adventurer” (a very rare breed).

As a Hindu I can completely agree to your point. For the Hindus, Hinduism is not a religion but a philosophy and faith in nature. Every faith is welcomed in our land. In the process we made a mistake hundreds of years ago of thinking predacious religions like Islam have a "good" faith, and can come and co-exist with us. We are still paying the price after turn of the millennium. You can understand this fact by observing how Jains, Buddhists, Jews, Sikhs and Christians mostly, still co-exist with us so peacefully. Not Muslims apparently though and to some extent some Christian missionaries who indulge into dirty conversions.

For instance it being a death cult(i have proof of it not being a death cult)
Quran is stories of past life and how to live the proper life we didnt do back then,

Also a former muslim was most likely looked at American quran (rewritten by non-muslim, or a rewritten quran from isis or al Qaeda, thats the problem, notice how none of american proof comes from the actual arabic quran, rather a fake online quran?
Also its in english, arabic being translated to english is not accurate in Arabic it has a different meaning, go to a translater, type in something into english translate to Arabic, then switch the sides and the sentence start to change
Also women abuse is real, that was either fake to make us look bad, or terrible people in the middle east who are not muslim
Blind americans tend to blame islam for mistakes made by a man that may look like hes a muslim, and thats why people say its racist
Isis and alqaeuda is not muslim, they took our religion and changed it, 2 different word changed written quran, people tend to think islam is the same as extremist islam,

Non-muslim always tries to justify our religion and dont even get there info from a muslim(would you rather ride a boat for someine who knows how to ride one or someone who doesnt?)
And women, let me clearify, no one ks perfect, you can have free thought its all up to you, women have a choice to cover them self up and they have there female rights, actually yesterday 2 fenales were attack by group of non muslim, were not the one who harm muslim infact, anti-muslim forced muslim to leave islam just so they dont get hurt by the anti-muslim community, they are now scared that these lies got to big and people believe them

About 1/3 of Islam does not follow the law of abrogation and so gives priority to the more amicable Mecca revelation. These Muslims, like Dr. Oz, tend to make good neighbors and are decent citizens. Unfortunately, the more Wahhabi element of Islam is growing and getting more belligerent. That amounts to more than 1 billion radical leaning Muslims. More than enough to usher in another world war.

    • @kaneinkansas
      @kaneinkansas Před 5 lety +8

Donald Fry The problem with not following the rule of abrogation is it is an act of apostasy in Islam. The Koran itself spells out the rule of abrogation, where two doctrines contradict the last in time prevails. This happens to be true in all legal systems, including our own, (which is why it is legal to drink alcoholic beverages in the United States) and Islam is a very legalistic religion. The religion is a nasty fallacy that’s been hoisted upon humanity. It’s perpetuated itself through the centuries through terror and ignorance. But in the age of the internet it is no longer possible to maintain ignorance. Slowly more and more people are getting educated. Eventually its going to become embarrassing to be found out that one is a Muslim. Today Islam, Islam is like Miss Piggy, looking in the mirror and it sees Jessica Rabbit looking back. Today everyone else’s just sees Miss Piggy - and Muslims are ignorant of that. Tomorrow, and with each passing day, Muslims will look in the mirror and see Miss Piggy looking back in a world where almost everyone else is Jessica Rabbit or better. It will be an act of self shaming and damnation to carry on being a Muslim, simply because Mohammed was a psychopath that needed to have power and ascendency over everyone around him, for evermore. Like Marx used to say about the working people, the chains they wear they wear voluntarily and all they need to do to cast them off, is to cast them off.

They don't want to follow local customs and laws and start whining how those local customs and laws offend them and force the communities, cities, counties, countries, they've moved into remove flags, statues, customs, that offend them.Dont tell me I don't know or understand the quran. Let me give you a few verses I've read... 3:54 allows plotting and scheming because allah did. 3:28 tell to take no friends but seem to be friendly to gain trust, 40:28 tells to hide your faith, 9:3 tells that you're free from liability to 'idolators' and you can lie, break treaties, etc, because it was done for islam. Bukhari 84-64-65, lying is permitted to deceive an enemy.
I can go on but we both know these things are there. I won't even go into the fact that the jew wearing the yellow star is a muslim invention, not nazi. Christians and jews are called dhimmi and najis. I am not one of the stupid, gullible, westerners that have never read the quran. Maybe you better reread it.

+JokerMouce Actually, they are obliged to read it in Arabic. How many muslims have this as their mother tongue at all? They know so little because most can't read it by themselves. That's the problem, it always takes someone to explain, which makes it very difficult to form individual points of view about it. Christians would surely be faced with the same problem if they were entitled to read the bible exclusively in Hebrew or Greek.

Christianity, is the same as Judaism and Islam. All are 1 Satanic Religion.
That is the Deception, they fool everyone with.
Humans do not come from Clay, like the Bible says, the Bible says, the Bible says.
      That is a Broken Record.
Clay was for the Semitism and the God Spells and the Writs, they use to make you a slave.
The Bible is a Dark book of Spells. Religion is all Satanic.
A Gospel is a God Spell.
The Bible is also a Funeral Book, like the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It brainwashes people with beliefs. Its a weapon of Mass Destruction.
Its for everyone's funeral, they write you a script so, you waste your whole life trying to act in their theater, they call war and race for their paper. You waste your life for them trying to figure it out, or trying to put it "in other words" so, they can read it at your funeral and steal your soul too. Christianity is extremely DARK!!!
Jesus was not a real person. Named Ra or Horus or Helios before that.
Some say his name was Amen too. In Jesus name = Amen.
No man may be born with no real father. That much is true. There is no such thing as a deity.
Judaism, Islam and Christianity are the same religion. Satanic.
      1 into 3 (13)
The names all point to other things by marginalizing the truth. Things they tell you not to look at, like Astrology. Its a con-job, with con-text and language.
Peter was Jew Peter ,or Ju-piter (Jupiter)
Zodiac is Zoo of the Arc (Zoo Di Arc)
There was no AHHH, Not a man named Noah.
No Mary, No A-Brah-ma, No Atom, or Eve
Those are the God Spells, they use to DECEIVE!
Humans do not follow religion, or need to be governed.
Especially by a Satanic Cult. Like the one we all live in and don't know about.
Personally, I don't mind Jainism as much, other than its slavery but,
ALL Religion is the same, from the 1 word Religion. Our governing authority is Satanic and Religious.

Respected Natarajan (Respected for his thoughts), here tries to say we don't need religions to be good humans...
and you're associating and dissociating the feeling of humanity with Hinduism and Islam.
Bro, You're doing the exact thing that we, in order to be a better human, need to shed off.
I'm Muslim, but I don't support each and every part of Islam (specially those which stand against humanity), I never said or felt or believed for a single moment that any religion is more important than humanity.
If we learn to hate others, harm others, demean other, disrespect others, or hurt others in any possible way, we are not following the righteous path to God.
I cannot take responsibility of every Muslim. But I can take responsibility of mine n try to be better person. Likewise you cannot blame every Muslim at large.

Jains aren't Hindus. Hindus have another definàtion of Mokha, And Jains have other. According to Jains, who follow 3 jewels, Who are totally good beings, follows all principles of Jainism (Principles of Jainism are much more different then Principles of Hinduism) can achieve enlightenment or Moksha. And the Jains claiming themselves are totally wrong. Jainism have a principle Of 'Samyak Darshan' of only Following their own god, But Jainism never force anyone not to follow other religions. In fact many Jain people Worship Hindu Gods, Buddha. And It has also a principle that "You have to follow your own god but you have no right to Tell Other Gods wrong or spread religious disharmony which can hurt other people's beliefs and practises, Rather to be Friendly and Helpful to them"
But yes We both brother religions are part of sanatan religion
