@@CultureVultureMedia1 What about S1 episode 1, when the folks of King's Landing travels from the capital to Winterfell in the span of 10 minutes? Yes they say the trip took s month, but in show-time it took about 2 scenes.
The showrunners even said behind-the-scenes that events don't happen at the same time, over the same amount of time. And that makes sense especially considering a show like GoT which have so many storylines going on.
Skipping over periods of time is normal in shows and films and has been done since S1, so I don't see why it suddenly is a problem here.

In S7, events were very much dependent on the time it takes for someone to travel, so imagine if Danaerys actually had taken the 2 days it should to fly from Dragonstone to beyond the wall. The boys would be dead, whereas if it takes longer for Robert Baratheon to travel to Winterfell in ep1, nothing changes.

The older sand snakes and a book only character who's Doran's daughter and Doran himself keep plotting revenge on the Lannisters and it's likely they will do a lot of damage to their own family and Dorne in the process. Unfortunately the population of Dorne over all seems to think revenge is in order even though, as Ellaria points out, he chose to fight in that trial by combat entirely by himself, so there are no terrorists, the Dorne plot is about people destroying themselves in pursuit of revenge, a lot of characters are seeking revenge, it's a major theme of the books.

Well there is a precedent for people surviving such a fall in prague sparked the thirty year war, the wall was a slight slope with a muddy terrain with loads of grass so the people being thrown out of the window survived without harm. (I think it even happend twice in prague xd). But the show and Hollywood have completly switched of logic (sad thing is some people believe shit like a small girl being able to kill a knight in full battle armour oh well, its not like the knight has been trained to kill or so and is a few kilos heavier)

Well in a snowy country, the roads gets cleared after a snowstorm [Talking about our actual time, because otherwise I couldn't get my car out to go to work]. Does that means that all the terrain gets to level zero of amount of snow ? Absolutely not.
On the bottom of castle walls, I'm pretty sure the wind currents would make it snow stays there, and even if the roads melt up or get cleared, they're would be place places where alot of snow is still laying around.
Now about how to survive a 10, 20 or 30 meters wall jumping into a 1,2, or 3 meters snow spot is questionable.
There is fluffy snow and there is hard packed snow.
If you land bad it could be terrible but on other circumstances, it could be just like jumping into a balloon.

A lengthy list of additional errors off the top of my head just while watching this video. I don't care if no-one reads it, it's just cathartic to say it!:
    - Brienne having her cake and eating it too - her going after Stannis rather than saving Sansa should have had consequences for her character, for Sansa, for the plot. But no.
    - The awesome Aero Hotah going out just like that to Tyene without even a fight. He killed a Kingsguard in the books ffs, his culture makes him basically married to his axe.
    - The Sand Snakes teleported onto a ship which left without them. Unless we assume the ship turned around which would have made sense to do because Myrcella died right off the coast, but then there is no way Jaime would have allowed the co-conspirators onto the ship heading to King's Landing, and nor would Doran. Plus if Doran knew of Myrcella's murder, the scene where he died would have made no sense because we see him comfortable with Ellaria and then shocked when he reads the news about Myrcella.
    - The complete reversal of Ellaria's opinions and personality compared to book Ellaria who has an amazing monologue about revenge being pointless and a vicious cycle that needs stopping, but that could be classed as a season 5 mistake.
    - I can accept Melisandre's lapse in faith, but I can't accept Davos' complete 180 - he trusts Mel when he never has, he calls her magic "miracles" when he hates bloodmagic, he suddenly cares about Jon's corpse for no reason rather than Stannis who he's dedicated his life to for 20 years, and he suggests resurrection is even possible when he'd have no reason for that to even occur to him, and why not Stannis if it does?
    - The waif baring a personal grudge against Arya goes against all of the Faceless Men's training and ideology.
    - Merchants are allowed in Vaes Dothrak, it's a trade city, there are loads of people there. Daario and Jorah shouldn't seem suspicious.
    - Killing a man by smashing his skull in is still spilling blood in the sacred city. The reason why Viserys died how he did was because it was bloodless (and poetic).
    - Dany not knowing the Dothraki culture well enough to know about the dosh khaleen. She lived as a Dothraki for like a year, she spent time in Vaes Dothrak and is a khaleesi whose destiny is the dosh khaleen - she would have known what was expected of her upon Drogo's death.
    - Dany being fireproof. I'll accept it... it's wrong, but I'll accept it.
    - All the Dothraki being fine with Dany killing all their khals and burning down part of their city. Even if most of them respected her power, at least the bloodriders should have tried to avenge their khals.
    - Coldhands isn't Benjen.
    - Ser Barristan's dismissal from the Kingsguard was unprecedented and massively insulting. Would the Lannisters really break tradition again and do that to one of their their own?
    - Dany naming her entire khalasar as her bloodriders. There are traditionally only three per khal. Their role is as a personal bodyguard, and upon the death of their khal they are to exact revenge and then kill themselves to join their khal in the nightlands. Dany is basically making the Dothraki extinct upon her death.
    - The waif revealing her identity, wanting Arya dead, choosing a dagger as an assassination method and botching the kill are all just stupid. The idea is that a Faceless Man has no personal identity so the fact she has a main face that she would use in public is dumb, especially during a murder attempt. Faceless Men are not meant to be allowed to assassinate people they are familiar with to avoid personal feelings, which are not allowed anyway. And Faceless Men are so good because they are meant to not fail and usually make it look like an accident or a natural death, not a murder. After the stabbing, no-one even attempted to help a bleeding out child in the streets.
    - An extension to your point about Brienne being compelled to fight for the Tullys - in earlier seasons she specifically differentiated between serving Lady Catelyn and not serving the Starks after killing Stark soldiers. She doesn't believe in being compelled to fight for anybody besides those she's sworn to.
    - The assumption is that Arya beat the waif (offscreen) in the darkness because Arya learnt how to fight blind. But in the books it's made clear that all Faceless Men trainees go through blind training to improve their use of their other senses. So the waif should have been quite comfortable in the dark as well.
    - Arya drinking the poison to regain her sight just makes no sense at all. I think it's meant to reflect her faith or honestly about being no-one or something (which she doesn't even have by the way), but it's just a pool of poison, she should have died there. They tried so hard to make everything about the Faceless Men mysterious and weird but really it just didn't make any sense.
    - Rhaegal and Viserion have just been sitting in Meereen's dragon pit all this time and just happen to bust through a wall right on schedule.
    - Yara having the complete opposite views to her book counterpart, Asha. In the books Asha based her entire rulership bid at the kingsmoot on changing the old ways of reaving and raping because that hasn't got them anywhere, but that's a deal-breaker for her with Dany in the show. Also don't go to a negotiation and say "our way of life is attacking, stealing from and kidnapping the people of the realm you want to rule", it's not a smart move.
    - The fact that Euron admitted kinslaying Balon and everyone is just fine with that. Then everyone is just fine with him wanting to kinslay Theon and Yara. Kinslaying is one of the most serious crimes.
    - Euron drowned but then just comes back to life again without being resuscitated.
    - The simplification and scaling down of the kingsmoot, one of the most epic scenes in the books.
    - The smartest person I've ever met had only one real piece of advice for Jon - don't do what Ramsay wants him to do... which is the very first thing he does.
    - I know the Battle of the Bastards was inspired by real battles but when the Battle of Cannae was described to have so many bodies they "were an obstacle on the battlefield" I really doubt it meant organised piles about three metres tall. Four or five bodies deep would be obstacle enough.
    - The entire Battle of the Bastards was impressive visually but really predictable from a story/plot perspective. Before going in, I knew the Starks would win, Ramsay would likely die, the Vale army would come to save the day. Every event was as boring as it could be.
    - Ramsay shooting Wun Wun rather than shooting Jon.
    - Removing the Tyrells in one swoop was kind of disappointing. Also Cersei kinslaying, killing the Pope and destroying the Vatican has no consequences at all.
    - Cersei being crowned with no claim to the throne and being a woman has no setup or precedence in this show where it is well established that it it patriarchal and feudal succession is everything. Basically everyone would object her rule because she has no claim to it whatsoever. Even if she was the rightful heir it wouldn't be smooth on account of her being a woman.
    - Jon Snow being crowned with no claim to the Northern crown, being a bastard and seemingly a Night's Watch deserter has no setup or precedence in this show where it is well established that bastards have no inheritance rights, are looked down upon by society and are even seen as distrustful. Plus nobody would believe his story about dying and coming back to life, relieving him of his Night's Watch vows, so in everyone's minds he would be a deserter, particularly distasteful in the North and punishable by execution.
    - Plus everything you mentioned in this video which I didn't bother to repeat.

      Wow, grand stuff mate.
      - Brienne going after Stannis rather than Sansa would have been a sweet trade-off and cool & complex character dev!
      - Aero Hotah going out so easily is cheap!
      - The Sand Snakes teleported onto a ship which left without them.
I understood it as them being on a different ship. Myrcella's ship arrives safely in KL eventually, and I suspect they would have killed Jaime too if they were on the same boat.
      - The complete reversal of Ellaria's opinions is really sad, yeah.
      - Davos' complete trusting Mel is actually kinda strange when you think about it. Last-ditch attempt at revival, yes, but why Jon before Davos even having a close relationship with him. Perhaps he saw something in him and believed Jon was the answer to the White Walker problem.
Although, since they don't have Stannis' body, it makes sense to not try and revive him.
      - The waif baring a personal grudge against Arya.
      A thousand times this.
      - Merchants are allowed in Vaes Dothrak. Amen.
      - Dany not knowing the Dothraki culture well enough to know about the dosh khaleen.
She knew, but chose a different path. She tried bending the rules, and broke those who didn't bend to her will. Fair enough.
      - Dany being fireproof.
Yeah, if they choose to change that, then fine, whatever.
      - All the Dothraki being fine with Dany killing all their khals and burning down part of their city. Even if most of them respected her power, at least the bloodriders should have tried to avenge their khals.
Totally missed that one, daing it!
      - Coldhands isn't Benjen.
Oh snap! I'm more concerned with his useless magic fireballs.
      - Ser Barristan's dismissal from the Kingsguard was unprecedented and massively insulting. Would the Lannisters really break tradition again and do that to one of their their own?
Yeah, not defending it, but might make sense with Tommen's age and being influenced by the HS.
      - Dany naming her entire khalasar as her bloodriders.
This is pretty much cultural appropriation.
      - Brienne serving Lady Catelyn and not the Starks is a great way to illustrate that point.
      - Arya beating the Waif in the dark.
Yeah, I could go out on a limb for this one and say Arya was fresh off the blind, so she'd be quicker to adapt to the dark in the moment. Plus the sword against the Waif's dagger.
      - Arya drinking the poison to regain her sight just makes no sense at all.
      Fair point.
      - Rhaegal and Viserion have just been sitting in Meereen's dragon pit all this time and just happen to bust through a wall right on schedule.
      It's mind-blowingly bad.
      - Don't go to a negotiation with "our way of life is attacking, stealing from and kidnapping".
Haha, nicely put! She's so stunning and brave for wanting to rape people though.
      - The fact that everyone is fine with Euron's kinslaying.
Yes, this is taken way too lightly!
      - Euron drowned but then just comes back to life again without being resuscitated.
Right, is this common or not? I don't remember how they do it in the books.
      - The smartest person I've ever met had only one real piece of advice for Jon - don't do what Ramsay wants him to do... which is the very first thing he does.
It's almost like Sansa gets to be right for the convenience of making her look smart.
      - I know the Battle of the Bastards was inspired by real battles but when the Battle of Cannae was described to have so many bodies they "were an obstacle on the battlefield" I really doubt it meant organised piles about three metres tall. Four or five bodies deep would be obstacle enough.
Haha! Yeah, they stacked up mighty fast lol
      - The entire Battle of the Bastards was impressive visually but really predictable from a story/plot perspective.
Yup, the unpredictabillity of the show died with Oberyn.
      - Ramsay shooting Wun Wun rather than shooting Jon.
Yeah. As well as none of the Winterfell garrison shooting Jon, Tormund or Wun-Wun as they approached the gates on their own.
      - Cersei being crowned with no claim to the throne.
I should definitely have expanded on this.
      - Jon Snow being crowned with no claim to the Northern crown, being a bastard and seemingly a Night's Watch deserter.
      That's true!

A theory about why the Waif didn't like Arya is because the Waif was able to see into the future, and saw that Arya killing the Night King would piss a bunch of people off. The last time we saw Balon Greyjoy was in Season 3 so it feels like D&D have forgotten about him only to bring him back just to kill him. Then, there’s the removal of the other five or so claimants to The Salt Throne, one of whom is Victarion Greyjoy, The Lord Captain of The Iron Fleet who is sadly cut from the show and they mixed him with Yara Greyjoy. There’s also the removal of Euron’s epic speech where he says “Westeros is dying” and through charisma and promises of conquests, The Ironborn elect him King, seeing as he seeks to marry Daenerys and has The Dragonhorn. Euron is intimidating, he has blue lips and an eye patch. In the show… he’s a… frat boy who makes dumb cock jokes… because reasons…

Having Robb wed a Volantene healer out of love, instead of a Westerling out of a sense of honor in a moment of weakness while mourning his deep losses at a young age, and having little (or no?) mention of guest-right in the show weakened the Red Wedding to me significantly. The whole reason it even happened was because Tywin orchestrated it (during an excellent scene that was cut from the show where he’s talking to Tyrion and says ‘some wars are won with quills and ravens’) as he does NOT suffer treason from his vassals. They even wrote a song about it - it was quite popular as I recall. Having Robb’s betrayal of the Freys be a gesture of love and not the stubborn sense of honor over duty to political alliance that ultimately leads to his downfall, paralleling his father, really makes it just an event that happens to me instead of a cornerstone example of how Westerosi politics operate.

  • @continuousself-improvement1879

Actually Tyrion being unharmed by the dragon should be a whole "subverting expectations!" in itself. He was rumored to be the result of his mother's indiscretion with Mad King Aerys and that was why Tywin hated him (aside from him also being an Imp, which is an embarrassment for a proud man like Tywin even if Tyrion had been his child and not Aerys).
One of the tests that the Targaryens made their bastards take is to have them confront the dragons. If they can control the beasts, they have Valyrian blood. If they can't, they became lunch for the dragons.
So, I would say that had Tyrion actually came away unharmed from a close encounter with the dragons without supervision from Danaerys (which even Jon being a secret Targaryen had never done); then Tyrion is a Targaryen and has some right to claim the throne. Though he had to be legitimized first and would change the whole dynamic between him and J&C.
I mean, if D & D want to go off-canon this could have been a plot that they could pursue, if they ever cared about the story at all.

15:24 Here’s a thing that bothers me about the *flawless sept-plosion plan,* that nobody ever seems to point out…
The stab-happy “little bird” didn’t just shank Lancel wildly, hoping to do enough damage to keep him from putting out the flames-no, no.
In a *dark, underground tunnel,* the kid stabs him ONCE, perfectly between the vertebrae, with surgical precision, in the exact area (and in the correct way) that would be necessary to cut Lancel’s spinal cord and leave his legs paralyzed- so all he could do was drag himself frustratingly slow towards the candles!
Even if you made the argument that “maybe Qyburn trained the little bird,” the chances of it being executed flawlessly are still very slim…

I agree most except Sansa not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vale in Moat Cailin. It was a stragety. If Sansa told Jon about the Knights of the Vale and him appearing with a larger army, Ramsay will never meet him at open battle. His apparent inferior numbers was what batited Ramsay to meet him at the field. If Ramsay knew Knights of the Vale were coming, he would have shut Winterfell's gates and let winter take Jon's army. Remember, winter was arriving soon, and should they wait for more numbers, they would have no chance in taking Winterfell as it was never fallen during winter. Those were necessary strategies to win.

    • @mr.googoopants3581
      @mr.googoopants3581 Před 2 lety

@Martial Matters Haha, that is your opinion but the shows itself says otherwise. Sansa could have taken power in the North in the first place if she truly wanted too. She is the eldest surviving legitimate heir of Ned Stark (Bran is not Bran Stark anymore) and the Lady of Winterfell in her own right and the Lords of the Vale follow her, not Jon. Even the Northern lords turn againt Jon after they found out he bent the knee (even Lyanna Mormont). Sansa supported Jon when he was elected King in the North, and she truly wanted to protect her family that is why she did what she did. Jon is a great general, but he is not the sharpest tool in the bunch.

    • @mr.googoopants3581
      @mr.googoopants3581 Před 2 lety

@Martial Matters Yes they named him king in the trust that he will fight for their independence and that trust was shattered when he bent the knee to Dany, something that even his most loyal lords like Lyanna Mormont expressed disgust to. The wildlings are non-factors in any possible power-play should a rift between the remaining Starks arise, fact is, Sansa controlling the unspent forces of the Knights of the Vale allow her to have the upper hand in any possible power-play.
Sansa indeed leaned from Cersei and Littlefinger, but also from Olenna, Margaery, the Hound and all other people she knew in her time in King's Landing but it did not make her a power-hungry, heartless ruler like Cersei. It was her who ordered to keep the gates of Winterfell as long as possible so that more smallfolks can claim sanctuary in its walls, it was her who made sure men are properly equiped in the coming war.
Her undermining Jon shows her concern for her brother/cousin. She knows Jon and how he is and she knows what honor led her father and elder brother to. She also know that men do stupid things when they are inlove. This cloud in judgement can cause them not just their power, but their lives.
Her betraying her vow of silence about his true parentage is the only way she can protect the people she love. She knows how unstable Dany, and that secret parentage could ultimately led to Jon's own death (Dany is not budging despite learning that she is not the true heir to the Targaryen claim). She knows that deep inside Tyrion also distrust Dany and all those distrust had legitimate reasons seeing what later happened.
Her not fliching after finding about Rickon shows her pragmatism. She endured Ramsay's tortures first hand and she knew that there is no way Ramsay would let Rickon live because as she said, Rickon is the biggest threat to Ramsay's claim compared to her - girl and Jon - a bastard. This is not some disney movie where we can trust the possible remaining good in a villain's heart, it's the game of thrones.
Yes, Sansa has been playing the game of thrones. She has been infact palying it far longer than most people think. She survived King's Landing by keeping low and obeying everything, all the while learning. Nof all people who play the game of thrones are inherintly evil. Sansa ultimately played it for the sake of her family, her people and her country.

    • @abrashio
      @abrashio Před 2 lety +1

Except this is where strategy comes in. Jon asked Sansa what else can they do repeatedly and she never once explained that she could mobilize the vale to fight on her behalf. The Vale which held their father Eddard Stark in high regard and fought together with the North just a couple decades ago and was chomping at the bit to ride to war. just by having those in his back pocket he could have convinced the other houses to ride to war on house Stark's behalf.
They would not even need to be present in the beginning of the battle but arrive later together with the Vale with Jon and his forces intentionally drawing Ramsey out of winterfell as we see in the Battle of the Bastards but instead of just the Vale arriving at the end to defeat the forces we see the banners for the other Houses in the North who were waiting in reserve. Thus we could truly say "the North Remembers" instead of that BS they put on the screen with Lyanna Mormont at Jon's crowning.
but of course that would mean sticking with the theme of earned loyalty vs bought loyalty and the impact on those who are left behind and how they benefit from it that is Tywin's Legacy vs Ned's Legacy. but of course "Themes are just for Eigth grade book reports" so why even attempt to bother to adapt three of the most glorious Northern moments especially after just completely destroying poor Stannis.

How did those arrows even affect Wun Wun? If I recall, the last one goes through his eye which I can accept. But those other ones in his shoulders, torso shouldn't have done anything. They probably didn't even get through his fur. But if they did, they should be at best poking his skin. Like when you push your finger lightly against a pin.

In retrospect seasons 6-8 should've focused primarily on Daenerys' slow decline into madness and Bran's magical powers. Those could've made for interesting stories. It could even be that Bran is actively trying to sabotage Daenerys and the mad king by making them go crazy with his powers. As a means to an end to the legitimacy of the iron throne. Heck he could've gone into the dragon and burned the throne. I think it would have made the finale satisfying.

There was a gap in the neck, if they wanted to show how undead the bodyguard is. It would be way funnier if it just skid across or bounced and then he went for the jugular. Of course, with the same outcome.

Plot armor of the starks really annoys me... But while i do tolerate Sansa, after all she was the heir of winterfell and easy to husband by accepted by North people. But there was no evidence she and Tyrion didnt had sex, so the marriage was still valid. How did she get married to Ramsay? Ramsay need it to dissolve the marriage, which is never adress! Moving on, i hated how they try to make her this master mind plan, that knew how the enemies thinks. All of her game was based of surviving another day. Would Ramsay or Littlefinger, or even Cersei tell her all of their plans? No! She only knew the sadist parts of them! But somehow she learned the best ideas from them, and knew how to make plans.
-Jon plot armor was more annoying, how did he survive the Battle? Not only that he came back for the fan base. And the more the plot goes, the less showrunners knew what to do with him. The only thing they did know is that Jon need to survive and keeping honorable, because jon is the hero.
-Killing House Tyrell and High Sparrow. Kingslanding was great because of the politic intrigues. without it, there was nothing. And we didnt even knew how worst could go (having one season Cersei drinking from a balcony) just to put Cersei as the last Villain (at this point it was clear)
-Cersei killing House tyrell, religious fanatic, a few noble house members and thousands of commoners and for some reason becaming Queen without any opposition. She lost the support of Storm Lands, The Reef, Dorne, North and the Valle. Tywin Lannister killing Robb, the way he did it... knew how dangerous was to be associated, so he let Frey´s having that kill for themselves. Joffrey was almost murder by a small mob, because they were hungry! High Sparrow plot was about having power gived by the commoners. Since he was "figthing" for them (that was his speech) he was supported enough to control the nobles and even the king. And if commoners got streagth enough it could take empires... That was one of the reasons that Tommen didnt strike back. A civil war would happen. Once Cersei did all of that, none of this importante things that was show to us, matters. She can be queen by sitting in the throne.

It's funny because earlier you've got Varys and Tyrion talking about power ("power is a shadow on the wall"), but in S6 they went full "pOwER iS PoWEr", completely disregarding the dynamic world they so far had accomplished.

The way this Season did The Northern Plot Point is so aggravating as in A Dance With Dragons (book 5), The Northerners are still willing to lay down their lives for House Stark (which they think is dead), as some join Stannis Baratheon. Even though Jon’s story is kind of Stannis book 5 arc, the way how many don’t join Jon and Sansa is stupid and done for petty drama. Same thing with The Battle of The Bastards.
First off: Jon marching against Ramsay when The Boltons have Jon outnumbered 3 to 1 is stupid and that’s how you lose a battle. Ramsay has 2,000 Heavy Cavalry and 1,000 LongBowmen so Ramsay could just cut down half of Jon’s army with the archers and then clean up what’seft with the cavalry.
Second: Ramsay this is supposed to be the smarter character so why does he go outside the walls?! This would make sense if this were the idiotic and cocky Ramsay from the books but again, Ramsay is suppose to be the smart one.
Third: Jon’s original plan of the trenches wasn’t going to work. The Wildlings aren’t disciplined enough to maintain a turtle shell formation. The best thing Jon could’ve done was move on somewhere that Ramsay holds as important and forth a siege.
Forth: Why didn’t Sansa tell Jon about The Vale?! The Vale has 20,000 Knights and they’re all mounted. If Sansa told Jon about The Vale, many of The Northerners would’ve joined as they’d outnumber Ramsay 5 to 1.
Fifth: The pile of dead bodies and the phalanx formations don’t work at all.

      @CultureVultureMedia1  Před 2 lety +3

Right! Sansa being so extrordinary intelligent is so shoe-horned that they make Jon march with a tiny force against Ramsey just so that she can say "it's not enough" a million times, and then get to save the day anyway.

@@CultureVultureMedia1 They wanted to shock the audience and do this petty drama. You know what they should've done, taken a page from the show Vikings. One thing they do really well is they would build up a battle, then the battle begins and you don't know what's gonna happen, but they inner cut the battle with scenes of the characters planning the day before and laying down traps, just before the trap or tactics is activated.

Season 6 is overrated. As the seasons were progressing, they should be darker and darker cause winter was coming closer and closer ( note:Winter doesn't only refer to the White Walkers but the odds the protagonists and Westeros are facing and Daenery's invasion of fire) Martin said that Winds of Winter which is supposedly the blue print of Season 6, will be even darker than the previous books cause Winter has arrived, and as we hoping for things to get better, they actually become worse. You'd expect S6 would be darker in tone thatn S5 but instead Season 6 ends up anticlimactic. It's mostly a fan service season where every single of the main characters gets what they want without consequences, relieving the fans. Jon becomes even more stoic and idiot after being resurrected. He knows that Ramsey will try to attack him psychologically, but he still bursts to his army, causing the death of many of his soldiers while he miraculously survives not be trampled by the horse riders or dodging the dozens arrows that are thrown in his direction. I mean, even a dragon cannot compete with Jon's plot armor. The battle of the bastards is the most overrated battle period because it undermines GOT's ability to portray battle scenes so realisticaly, which the show used to do so well, subverting the fantasy trope of battles feeling far-fetched. Daenerys who supposedly is more Targaryeny becomes fire proof to take control of the dothraki, which is anti Targaryen ( Martin has said Targeryans aren't Fire proof, the birth of the dragons was an one time thing, a miracle). In addition, we should't cheering for Daenerys as she starts her invasion but concerned of her Targeryan-ness which would ultimately bring Fire and Blood to an already bloody continent. Cersie blows up the Great Sept of Baelor and later becomes Queen like nothing had happened. That wasn't supposed to be a definitive victory but a short one, cause the faith of the seven has dozens links across Westeros, plus the people attacking Joffrey while knowing the Lannisters are in their prime with Tywin being alive, but instead not daring to attack Cersie in season 6 where the lannisters are in their weakest state, that is laughable. I could go on and on and on, but all in all the only good think about this season are the visuals and the hold the door scene which is derived by Winds of Winter. This season isn't better than season 7 or 8. It suffers from the same problems, but its popular cause is a fan service season while Season 8 is bad and doesn't give the fans what they want.

Varys doesn't antagonize red priests for no reason as you mention in it other seasons as well. He has a certain grudge against people who practice black magic since his castration was performed solely for the purpose of performing it. There's even a scene where Melisandre taunts him by offering to recite the words of the spell that took his genitals if I remember correctly.
