Really enjoyed this conversation esp observations on secularism, irreligiosity. Vatican II was a new revelation for me.
Also I've found that the recognition of other epistemologies especially indigenous ways of knowing has given me permission to comfortably assert Islamic ways of knowing, at least in academic contexts.

I don't practice too much nor do I believe. But I practice more than I believe. I mostly abstain from haram and I pray every now and then. I remember God when I wake up. I don't understand how I can practice without believing either, that's why I don't practice much. I'm not fully convinced of Islam
The interviewer really needs to let his guests speak instead of interrupting.
I was looking forward to this discussion but found it to be incredibly disappointing. Simply using philosophical language in order to categorize thought does not render your conception any more profound or strong in its validity. Unfortunately, this trope of using deconstructionist philosophy to only reconstruct traditional/conservative narratives is not at all different to the status quo. Clerics have used this approach for decades now - I do applaud Imam Facchine for having the intellectual adab to at least credit this approach properly. That being said, there is nothing new here at all. I realize that my comment might read as if I'm conflating new w/ necessarily better - but, I instead, believe that new approaches are necessary due to the lack of effectiveness of previous approaches that we've seen fail time and time again.
Quite a few unfounded assumptions in your comment. You are using terms like clerics, conservative, effective, and new in quite a loaded fashion. How do you define what is effective and what do you mean by previous approaches and seeking something new? Do you mean progressive distortions of the tradition that surrender to the dictates of Liberalism and progressive movements such as LGBT? And no, your dismissive attitude to the language used here as merely decorative shows that you aren't satisfied with the ideas discussed here or that you don't know what these terms really mean and want some normie level progressivism.

I'd like to push back on certain characterizations you've made of my comment - I'm not quite sure what is so loaded by my term usage. Indeed, I've used each term in accordance with it's most standard definitions found in any modern dictionary. As for what I'm interested in - I believe erecting a dichotomy between what Imam Facchine describes above and what you've discerned as "Liberalism & progressive movements such as LGBT" is, as many proposed dichotomies are, entirely false. I do believe we have a large intellectual tradition and corpus of Islamic intellectual studies that provide more than enough resources for us to be able to interrogate and re-introduce previously less widespread interpretations/understandings/lessons that provide a much more practical approach to the modern context. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "normie progressivism" - as far as I can discern the large majority of the world, especially in context of governance and leadership, has, and continues to, swing toward the right. That being said, "normie progressivism" & "progressive movements such as LGBT" aren't really identifiable political ideologies. I can say that, colloquially, this kind of language is usually used to reference a large swathe of leftist political ideologies. Personally, I'd be really interested in seeing Islamic interrogations of some of these movements and wouldn't be so inclined to see others. All this being said - I was eagerly hoping that Imam Facchine would be doing that very thing in this interview, hence my disappointment.
@mercymuj4hid It sounds like you want cherry picking of the tradition divorced of context and in accordance with the dictates of western thought and without any Islamic usul that underpins how opinions are formed. Can you please address this directly then: do you support Muslim reformism, especially of the progressive variety, and do you want to include LGBT as an acceptable category in Modern Muslim discourse and living?
@@MacmillansDiciple I really don't know how you got that from my comment - I literally pointed to the vastness of our tradition as an ideological framework, or 'underpinning' to use your language, to interrogate/understand modern issues. I don't wish to discuss my personal opinions on the matters you speak of not exclusively because they have nothing to do with my original comment, but also because you clearly haven't absorbed the points I made in my initial reply (regarding the vast swathe of viewpoints/ideologies that progressivism refers to colloquially). I agree with OP. I've met Imam Tom very briefly. I like to think he is an effective imam to his local congregation but he is not AHM. He is what a clever person looks like to a stupid person. I don't find what he says profound, insightful or inspiring. But good luck to him. After a few years, I hope I'm eating humble pie.
I like Salman as a person. His Islamism is benign compared to what else is out there. I like him because he is a jolly fat person.
