- More than 70% of volcanic activity occurs underwater -- with much of it hidden from human view by seawater. But in 2012, passengers on a flight over the Pacific Ocean saw something odd: a big chunk of floating pumice rock, signaling an underwater volcano had erupted. A new paper published in the journal Science Advances details that 2015 exploration and its surprising discoveries.

Pumice: IM THE LARGE UNDERWATER VOLCANO IN THE WORLD

Tamu massif:AMATEURS

@@darkbrawler0997 hahaa apolaki is thee biggest
@@rolandjhonm.flores9917 Biggest Caldera
Had this been closer to a beach or a shoreline, this underwater Volcanic-Explosion may have triggered a tsunami.
This is exactly what happened in Tonga :(
This new one definitely will
Oh yeah, you bet ole buddy!
Somehow, this reminds me of how Anak Krakatau arise from the Sunda strait. Almost hundred of years ago.
If you are looking for video of the eruption itself; you won't find it here.
Why can’t ocean water sink into the core of earth threw volcano holes.
It does and due to extreme heat under the crust, the water that does sink through the ocean floor rapidly boils, forcing it out of the crust through holes, these holes are known as Hydrothermal vents.
@@sauceyeti4381 that’s awesome
PUMICE:IM BIGGEST UNDERWATER VOLCANO IN ALL THE WORLD
BENHAM RISE:I DIDNT HEAR WHAT ARE YOU SAYIN?
Lol dati pa to di pa na didiscover yung benhan rise
Its not. Tamu Massif was the largest underwater volcano.
Benham rise brought me here
Your from philippines?
Hot spots can produce new islands. , underwater.
x1.5 bigger than St.Helens?
How did it not created a tsunami?
There is a possibility that it can erupt now and there is also my own theory that dinosaurs saw the eruption. It was covered by water because of sea rise through the time or the meteor that landed on earth that made the dinosaurs extinct
Whach kursegat video
Pop a balloon the size of a bowling ball at the bottom of a swimming pool and see what kind of disturbance that makes to the surface. (Call that your underwater volcano)
Now take another balloon of the same size, submerge it halfway in the water and halfway out, and pop it and see what kind of disturbance that makes. (Call that Krakatoa)
Now drop a bowling ball into the pool and see what kind of disturbance that makes. (This is a meteorite)
THAT is why something so small did so little. Krakatoa for example made it's mark not because it was a big eruption (and that was 45 times larger than Mt. St. Helens) but because of where it happened; halfway submerged in the water and also because of the landslides it caused as it disintegrated.
Underwater volcanoes usually don't create tsunamis unless there is a massive landslide crashing INTO the water that is associated with that eruption. There's an island in the Atlantic where even a small eruption could create a huge landslide and wipe out the entire Eastern seaboard of the US. Meanwhile you probably didn't hear about the eruptions that happened off the coast of the state of Oregon back in 1998 or 2011, or 2015.
Is anybody here after the one just recently?
Me
Wow what ya mean we almost missed
97% co2 produced by the earth "how dare you "
1:35 So it was a VEI 6 eruption
No, it'd still be only a 5. A 6 erupts between 10-100 cubic kilometers of material a 5 is 1-9. Mt. St. Helens erupted 1 cubic kilometer of material so this would be much less than 10.
Similar in size of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, which was the second largest eruption in the 20th century
I did not know there was a under water volcano I will never go to the beach I am just going to the pool
The majority of volcanoes are under water, the water pressure is how they are formed. We have dormant volcanoes above sea level and some above sea level that erupt every now and then. when the under water magma pockets explode, the pressure from the water raises and forms a new pressure pocket above it, ones that is above sea level, the pressure from the water doesn't activate it quite as often.
Around 80% of all volcanic activity is under water.
Toba the supervolcano
Good thing it didn't became an island
2022 was bigger
Yep
Doesn't show it..
Wow
Let me know if you have any ideas on what you need to do with this project 🙄🤔
