My daughter's idol. She learned to play the bass because of John. She even picked up a few of his riffs. Then The Who was scheduled to play in our town on the 4th of July, 2002. I got tickets for her and me. Then, he died just a week before the gig. She missed him by a few days. She never got to see him in person.
John must have really loved Keith Moon,if ya watch alot of The Who concert footage you can catch glimpses of John and Keith smiling and playing peek a boo with each other on stage...but the look in their eyes you can tell it is real love and friendship!
They’ve rented an apartment together in the early days:) I’ve read in Pete Townshend’s book, that when Keith only started with the band, Roger tried to befriend him, but failed. Whereas John got an instant connection. Ps Probably to late for this comment. But anyways😉
Yep… I noticed that too!!! He watched him good. Lol… part of the reason I heard was because Keith was getting sloppy towards the end & John could hit the Note Keith missed on his Bass! John was that Ph….king Good! GREAT!
To people comparing Entwistle to McCartney...McCartney is a great composer and a good player. Entwistle was a virtuoso on his instrument, and a good composer.
+Admiral Smelling Entwistle is a MUCH better player obviously but McCartney was a great player as well. If you don't realize that, then you don't understand 1) his playing and 2) the instrument and how it works within the framework of a song. And I'm not being nasty.
Paul McCartney is a good player but not groundbreaking. He is absolutely top 20 when you talk about greatest artists. His overall playing ability is not near the top.
The transition at 1:38 is stunning...when he goes from practicing a relatively tricky bit of an unfamiliar song to My Wife that he's played a thousand times...when he looks up at 1:43 you can practically see him feeling himself on stage again. So long, John...I'll never shake your hand again.
@@kevincorcoran6493 no, that's actually John's song Left For Dead from the album music from the van-pires, the part of my wife is in the track that happened to sound like it lol
What was so godly is that he did this one four strings!! The people with six or five string basses couldn't even pull of what Entwistle did on four! RIP thunderfingers.
I love the way John thrups on his strings with his right hand. I have to try that on my guitar. :) John is gone, but he is still teaching, well me anyway.
Yes, he was human like any of us and seemingly very grounded but he was also a member of the greatest rock n' roll band in the world and the greatest rock n' roll bassist ever. Not to mentioned he spent many nights of his life partying with Keith Moon. I am suprised that John was so grounded considering all that.
Ya know, it's been 35 years since he's gone,, and my memories fade. I just remember having to remember to close my mouth in astonishment the first few times, and then later smiling knowingly when he let loose. I've described The Who as 4 guys playing different songs on the stage at the same time, but making it work
@Flippinflopperstein and @eveningtsar, the song at 0:34-1:38 is "Left for Dead", a track on the John Entwistle's Band's "Music from Van-Pires" CD, now out of print (but that track's available on youtube at present). Enjoy :-).
John Smith slight exaggeration there I'd say he was rumored to be frivolous with his money in all aspects of his life but its his money he earned it he can do what he likes with it. I don't think he was a daily user ie an addict I could be wrong he was a regular user but that's not an addict and there is a big difference.
Enzo Ferrari any he strapped on his basses n proceeded to let his fingers do the walking. the Ox had a sound all his own n it was complimented by Townsend's music. my fav is Quadrophenia, made loud to be played loud !!!!!
McCartney dared John that he couldn't play a blues solo, John whizzed through a quick blues solo and McCartney called him a "Flashy Cunt" now that takes skill to do that and is the funniest thing he has done in his life
The man was only 57 years old when he died. Such an abundance of talent etc. Then I look at some of these other bass players here on U Tube who virtually have no talent & are why into their 60's. Or the younger one's making ass'es of themselves. Hats off to Mr. Entwhistle sorry he isn't around anymore + I miss his presence with 'The Who'.
No, you miss being young and relevant. That’s why old guys hate new music, because they’re no longer the keepers of what’s hip. Don’t get me wrong, I’m 51 and love The Who, but I moved onto other music way back in the 80’s. Classic Rock is music for people who can’t let go.
Notice John is playing along with tracks recorded with his late band mate 'Keith Moon'. Other than the handful of drummers that have come & gone since he died. I bet Entwhistle really missed him & heart broke more than the rest of the band.
@BeMyBelarus Yeh man! I'm 23 and I reckon we lost one of the best bass players in the world! It ain't about who's best...he stood there and played like a demon, and that's his lasting legacy. I play bass guitar and there's so many times when playing that i think...what would Entwistle do??? Haha. x
That must be one of THE STUPIDEST comments ever put on CZcams. He often gets voted the best bassist ever,he's always right up there in any of the polls. He's never been underrated, he's always been looked at as a legend of the bass
The song here is Left For Dead, long before the vocals were recorded. It's funny because he screws up the bass line to the My Wife pastiche at the end, which is ironic as he wrote it...... Gives you a brief glimpse of the life of John though which was clearly incredible. The shoddy camera work was done by Steve Luongo, and wasn't meant for public consumption it's a HOME MOVIE. He released this because it seemed fitting for the Ox's Tale film, and I for one - am glad that he did!
The Ox was the best way for us today to make it happen and we will be able for a great video game to play the best way for the people in our life to get the best.
This guy was so low key onstage compared to the other 3 original members of The Who youd never know that he was almost as wild as Keith Moon. He says he was more than happy to let Keith Moon take the blame for their crazy antics.
McCartney: Guitarist First and foremost. Wrote on Guitar and Piano. Great lead/Harmony Vocalist.Pianist.Songwriter.Par Excellence!! No-one else wanted the bass gig in the Beatles! Oh yeah, no doubt. That has been my argument all along, to say that the Who have to be one of the best if not the greatest of all time! Although, their ideas for songs and stuff clashed a lot, they still came together eventually to produce quality music. And to think they were even BETTER live! Hmm, I just can't see any way, how these guys CAN'T be the best!
I am sure Pete and Roger knew her but probably not as well as people would think. Basically, John, Pete and Roger didn't hang out when not doing Who tours or business. Even then, they kept seperate camps. Also, while they did tour during the time John and Lisa were a couple, it was obviously nowhere like the 60's and 70's.

That's one Big House. Yeah I knew a slight shard about whatever of the guy but? He had to be paying a fortune just to maintain that place. Yet alone the greens/ gardens.
@ColJedburgh I don't know about half of those bassists you mentioned... Geddy, Macca and the Ox are the ones I've heard of. And no mention of Chris Squire? Really?

I love his sense of humour - practicing shooting with Daltrey solo albums,
and dying on the night before a Who tour -

John Entwistle was indeed one of the greatest bass players ever. I would bet anyone who"beat" him in a poll was influenced by the Ox.

Hands down the best. Plenty of others that are/were great players but John was top of the class.
I really l♥ve this man!
What is the melody from' heard at 00:35 before it sieges into a backing track for My Wife?
To even mention McCartney in the same sentence with The Ox as bass players is fucking absurd.
Rotosound Swing bass 66 strings. He developed them.
No wonder he died broke, what did that mansion cost? how much would it take just for the upkeep?
