I remember the power chords just grabbing me the very first time I heard this song 40 years ago, and I said this is going to elevate guitar playing to a whole new level. I think Pete Townsend's Guitar Playing has always been overlooked because his biggest talent is songwriting, but the understated Power Chords here just say so much more than any Eddie Van Halen finger tapped 100MPH stuff could ever do. In 100 years people will see that Pete's contributions were far more important overall.

All artists of the present day owe a debt to these guys, especially Pete Townshend. There is no one that plays anything even remotely resembling rock & roll that has not been influenced by them. Punk may not even have existed without them. They were an important influence on my choice of a career in a music that has fed my family for decades. All I really want to say is thank f**king god for The Who, and especially Pete Townshend!

@@purplebondsaiyan2987 I take your point, but I think My Generation is to polished to be punk. Punk in my mind means musicians much less technically proficient than The Who just going out and bashing it out with feeling. In fact the MC5 were too good of musicians to be called punk, so I take it back

I see Townshend as a close to a Leonarndo Da Vinci figure as we will see in our lifetime...

To this day, and I am rapidly approaching 60 years on this planet; I still get shivers everytime i hear the opening synthesizer riff of Baba O'Reilly....amazing!

The opening is a synth like sound, but that riff comes from the Marimba Effect on the Lowrey organ.

Ia gree Pete is talented, but I believe the analogy you used applies to Steve Jobs more than Pete. I think Pete Townsend is more the Beethoven (with a litle bit of Mozart thrown in) of our time, and unfortunately the hearing loss they both have in common.

I neglected to add the question. Just how many of Eddie Van Halens writtings have been converted into Broadway Musicals. pete wrote not one, but two succesful Rock Operas. Pete Townsend ponder the potential of youth being wasted with his comment "Teenage Waste Land" and was self reflective with "Who Are You" and what did EVH give us, but Hot For Teacher ???
