- We have had a CRAZY few months up here at Cerro Gordo. We made huge progress on the American Hotel, we had a cadaver dog come and search for lost gravesites and the borders of our cemetery, I found some new mines, and a lot more!
This town continues to surprise me with all the secrets and history available here. I'm more excited than ever to see what the next few years holds up here!

I'm not really a biblical person. But god will never put more on us than we can bear. And some of the thing's iv seen in my time well Some people can really bear a lot.
It is very noticeable how much better the production has become. Almost too good? Kind of could be a show on the Discovey channel. What with how well edited it is. I dont mean that i dont still watch and like and look forward to every single video. But i do kind if miss some of the early grittyness, when you got that feeling of eerie isolation with you as you must have felt it sometimes. Nowadays even when you are alone it feels like you have a whole camera and sound team with you. Not say it is better or worse, just different. As you gained something, you lost something too.

Finding the burial sites is amazing. What better way to pay respect to the people that made the town what it is then to mark their grave and pay honor to them.

Is there a list of miners, I found several census taken of Cerro Gorgon, Keeler and Swansee but only a few years.

Brett, one thing that probably should be considered is that when Owens Lake was drained, it probably changed the local weather patterns which resulted in more of an arid condition. Those mammoth tree stumps that you’ve found in some locations are probably signs of a wetter climate, which would also support the higher demands they had for water. I would not be surprised if the older wells prove to be currently dry. But with the growth of Owens Lake, I’m very much curious if you will begin to see an increase in the amount of rainfall, humidity, and heavier morning dew that could lead to more plant growth and the return of many of the older springs and water sources.

I find it truly amazing how many people, people with very select and unique talents and/or resources come to that precious town to help. I think they also share your passion of history and establishment to perhaps 'BE' apart 'OF' that history, and that's encouraging and respectful. I will not devalue the countless hours of precious manpower it took to actually build/rebuild; Roads: Buildings; Water resources; Exploration; Etc... There is no price you can put on the love and admiration these people employ to Cerro Gordo and its surrounding areas. I admire and applaud them and you Brent for bringing history to life once again and hope you will continue this epic adventure

Nobody said to disturb them. I said preserve them. As in find them so you don't dig them up when doing work around the place.
I agree and even if it is just marking off the area so no future development disturbs the area, thank you for once again preserving history the good the bad and even areas some don’t like to talk about but what is apart of history.
You are doing the correct thing to find “Consecrated Plots” for which a monument for the Unknown Miner can be erected with a spot for visitors to sit & pray for their souls.
In Texas, we have burial ground for families who died of the “Fever”.
You can't pray for dead people. Their souls are in 1 of 2 places.
You are still hands down one of my storytellers ever. Half of the magic of Cerro Gordo is in how you honor it, how you share it while preserving it... you inspire so many of us!

As a member of the AAPI community, thank you and your team for finding the remains of our ancestors. Their names may be lost, but we honor their part in our history, which is so often forgotten.
When I watch you uncover the history of Cerro Gordo from 150 years ago, I wonder if 150 years from now people in Cerro Gordo will tell their history like: "You know this town used to be completely abandoned until about one and a half century ago, but this guy Brent buys this town and moves here from Texas. This was back in the beginning of the great pandemic of the 2020s . So he began rebuilding the town while documenting everything on something that is called a CZcams channel. Back then VR tech had not replaced every form of entertainment, so people would watch his videos on flat screens."

Fantastic progress on the hotel. I am hoping that Owen's Lake keeps filling and stays around for many years now.
Sadly, the projection for Owens is probably similar to Tulare Lake. 2 - 3 years, unless the wet weather pattern continues. We have always conserved water (my Mother was born & raised on the family ranch in Brawley, CA, in the very early 1900's. In the desert).
I think this will become the new normal pattern. Owens lake will go away in a year or two, and then come back in another 50 when the next deluge strikes the west coast.

It's not a ghost town anymore (although there are probably many ghosts there) , as you are creating new memories and history there. Cerro Gordo and the Owens Lake Valley are now gems within California. Keeler and the other towns are going to benefit from Owens Lake and Cerro Gordo. It seems that all of your efforts for Cerro Gordo are having a positive effect on the entire area.
Owens Lake is not coming back, just to be clear. It will contain water for upwards of maybe 2 or 3 years, but it will return to a dust bowl after that. LA is still using more water than it ever has, placing record demand on its water sources. And the Owens Valley is still just as much a source of LA's water as it ever was.

I drove past Owen's Lake yesterday and it was so nice seeing water in that basin. I was on the far side of the lake traveling south and kept looking up at Cerro Gordo thinking about what is happening up there. I wish me and the family had time to stop by. Maybe next time!
Owens Lake and the view surrounding it is so beautiful. Let's hope the water stays another 100 years.
Owens Lake will not last more than a couple/3 years tops. It has water in it now due to a record snow pack, whilst the demand on that water is higher than it's ever been. Even if CA becomes wetter for a decade or more, the demand for water from the Owens Valley will still outweigh the supply. And if every year became like this last year, for snowfall, LA would simply see it as carte blache to take even more water from the Owens Valley, making Owens Lake dry again. There is no quenching So. CA's thirst for water.
Cemeteries are hugely important to understanding the community that was ! Glad you highlighted it!
I can't believe it's been 3 years. I've watched since the beginning when it was so empty and I wonder if you were mad to take it on. 😊. That being said it's so frigging cool. I love watching dogs work and sad to know so many "outcasts" were just buried outside of what people then thought were "decent" people. They all deserve a memorial

I think its absolutely wonderful that so many people are so interested in Cerro Gordo. And that so many people with diverse skills have been donating their time and effort into helping you. I can't wait to see what you have accomplished in the next 10 years.
Wow Brent the transformation in you over the last 3 years is amazing! When you started out you were just this guy from Texas who had a dream but didn't really have a clue how you were going to get there. I remember when I deist started watching you it was still 2020 and you were struggling with trying to do just the most basic of repairs. Then when the American hotel turned down it was like you had watched your dreams go up in flames with the hotel. Then it was like there was nothing other than trying to survive and figure out how to bring the hotel back. So many setbacks so many things that made you look like you were being beat down. Yet somehow you brought life back into Cerro Gordo. You broaden your horizons and now there is the potential to have water up there again. You look nothing like the guy we knew 3 years ago. You are a completely different person. You have become the soul of Cero Gordo and potentially for the surrounding areas. And to think it just started out as moving in for the care taker so he could be with his wife during lockdown. What started out as just a few seeks has turned into a lifetime. I hope you continue to make it great.❤

I am a photographer who lives in Ireland and it is my dream to make a photo book with you showing the beauty of Cero Gordo as well as putting some of the history and the stories left behind by the people that once called this place home into print to be preserved for generations to come. What an interesting story one of distant history as well as this new wave of life in Cero Gordo which one day generations to come will look back on as we do on the miners in the 1800’s

@@RMJ1984 the issue isn't so much that it's being drained the issue is that the water that should fill it is redirected for the LA Aquaduct. While the LA Aquaduct still exists the City of Los Angeles are legally required to not allow Owen's Lake to refill other than in cases where the capacity of the aquaduct is exceeded (i.e. during periods of intense flooding). There's two reasons why this is the case the first is because of a level case brought by the Natural Soda Products Co (who went bust in 1952) and the second is a case between the city and the state.
The TLDR is that currently the City of Los Angeles has to pay for all the dust control stuff (it's cost them $2.5 billion at this point) but cannot refill the lake. If the state allowed them to refill the lake by removing the 80+ year old court rulings then the liability for costs will then go to the state as the owner of the lakebed so I can't see that happened.

we have building that are thousinds of years old in this world, my house was build when Cerro Gordo was made back in the time.

I want to directly help you preserve history by suggesting you cut out the middle man.

I think it's important to acknowledge all the people who died there. You wondered about hauntings, well, it's sounds like they are all over and around you. Ground penetrating equipment will be good. You find these people, put markers down and fence off the graves so no one accidently digs them up. The hotel is looking great. The lake is awesome! Lets hope this next winter you get lots of snow and it keeps filling up. It sounds like you have so many things happening and a lot of people who are just as enthusiastic as you are to discover all the things.
It is exciting to imagine that the hardworking men who died in the pursuit of a better life has an opportunity to be honored in the renewing of the town and the telling of its history

Suggestion: you might consider driving a shallow stake with a small red piece of plastic or cloth to temporarily mark each potential area to search further while they are fresh in your mind!
Great video as usual Brent. It's hard to believe it's been 3 years. You are looking healthier now than you did just 18months ago. Whatever you're doing, keep it up.
Side note, With all the lead and other toxic metals in those hills, I don't think I would feel safe using the ground water, unless the water was tested on a regular basis for heavy metals. Many historians believe the fall of Rome was due to their use of lead pipes delivering drinking and bathing water.
So nice to see the lake maybe coming back. Nothing more depressing than a dried out lake.

Brent, you are the heartbeat of Cerro Gordo. You are the breath of new life, and I believe that because of your love and respect for the mining town, it is revealing more of itself to you. Even going so far as to return the water.
We all know that water is life, and I can see the rebirth of Owens Lake is the land blessing you for the care and respect you have given it.
As morbid as parts of this video , it's good that you pay respect to the dead of CG. They played a big part in the making of the town, and its only right they, too, are mentioned.

Your doing the right thing . All graves you locate should at least have a marker . They deserved better than they got . Like Brunkow's cabin in AZ , 17 people are known to be burried around the property ..........but nobody has had the common decentcy to even mark them . That shames all of us in this century . If nothing else , to locate and mark for historical preservation .

Viewing the water coming back to Owen's Lake makes me strangely emotional. Just as life comes back to Serro Cordo, the lake comes back as well. I hope whoever is responsible for it, will make take care of the lake fully being refilled. It's beautiful

That is a great thing to do,is to honor the dead and find them and mark the graves. Also maybe do a memorial service for them when you have a lot of people up there. I think that would help with paranormal things happening. To honor the Chinese would really make a big difference,to show the dead Chinese that they were honored and remembered. I can’t believe that there’s no history on this it’s very important you’re right .I subscribed when you had very few subscribers in 2020 and I’m so happy with your channel and your progress. Cerro Gordo has some of the most unique history of arguably anywhere in the desert southwest. Just from being situated way up in the mountains and the inaccessibility it makes you really marvel at what people went through to get there. I like that you aren't fully turning it into a tourist trap like somewhere like Tombstone, but instead are playing on the history of it and using technology to put that history out to the world. California is full of history, from the Spanish and the missions to the mining boom and all the immigrants that flooded in, it truly is a fascinating state, and places like this make it even more so.

You remind me of a amazing teacher i had at school it was years later i realised he had to be that enthusiastic about the subject matter to 1000's of other kids for years and i respect him for that so much.
Times have changed and your enthusiasm in your content and bringing people to help you with there enthusiasm to unearth amazing history for everyone on this planet with Internet access to enjoy to learn to take themselves back to times past. Thank you for the sacrifice you have made to bring this to us all the videos cant possibly show the hardship up there but you don't see it ether because the people there before you had it so much harder.
Without the story the people the history its just a nightmare of a place up a mountain with holes in it. ❤

I truly cannot say how happy I am to see that the hotel is being build again. Followed your adventure some videos before it burnt down, and still holding on the promise to bring some cans or bottles of beer up the mountain.

We see in your videos all the time pine trees around your property, before the miners got going did the area around Cerro Gordo have widespread pine/tree growth ? Did the miners mill all the timber around to facilitate the various operations ? and finally do you have any forestation plans for the future ? cheers mate !

Brent, been watching your videos since you started this journey. Sitting here thinking after this last video. I don't think there could have been a more appropriate person to carry on the history of Cerro Gordo. Things happen and you just buckle down and push through. Not a lot of people can say the same. It is very noticeable the love you have for the former glory of this town and what it meant. Also you are doing a fine job bringing the continued journey to us viewers. Doing great my man, keep up that strong spirit.

Seeing Brent this excited about Cerro Gordo and asking questions about it and explaining the way he sees things, it reminds me of my time as a missionary around Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. There is indeed so much history attached to locations, and when we learn about it and invest in it, it really does become a part of us.

I’ve basically been following your adventure since day one. It’s always awesome to see a new video come out and I have a feeling you’re in a better place than last year mentally. Thanks for sharing your journey. Life is made of ups and downs and you’re not afraid to show it. Seeing Owen’s lake filling up again while the American Hotel is progressing really makes you feel that history is made every single day and we’re all part of it. Again, thanks for sharing it all.
