    I think that’s the thing these off-road guys forget. AWD works as you accelerate and continue to press the gas. It doesn’t work effectively doing a “stop and go” style of driving. If wheels slip, keep on accelerating, and let the AWD do its thing.

    Case: You are one of the best testers along with Tommy. I can tell just by the way you confidently handle the steering wheel you are one-with the car and really know what's it's doing and feel it. You are a true "car-guy"!
    Okay, so this is another "Honda Sponsored" event. When will you get one to test on your own?? I'm very impressed for what it is! A 7 passenger Family SUV. I don't think you want a family hauler with 11" of ground clearance... the kids won't be able to get in! I would personally like a Passport version with all the skip plate goodness and then I'd lift it 1- 1-1/2" and put some real off-road tires on it. 🙂 This is only the beginning as Honda is starting to really get their act together. The next Passport will be even better and have more ground clearance!

    An aftermarket lift and beefier tires would make this thing much better.

    • @rustlesee
      @rustlesee Před rokem

      Better is subjective. A lift on a unibody is more like walking on your tip toes, versus actually being a taller person. Better tires, I’ll totally give you. Tires always make a vehicle.

    • @Jedi_Luke
      @Jedi_Luke Před rokem +2

      @@rustlesee Definitely not an extreme lift, I'm talking like 1-2 inches. Think of it as a short person wearing shoes with thicker soles. Taller tires would would most likely require said lift for clearance issues. These stock tires don't look very tall. Until a Pilot goes body on frame it will never be a serious off roading vehicle, but improvements can be done to anything if a person is willing to spend the $. That's objective. I totally agree about the tires tho.

    It's about time we get to see what the i-VTM4 can do with some A/T tires!
    Will be interesting to see what this does on the roller test. As I understand it, Honda has some type of electronic "line-lock" to transfer torque between the front wheels (the iVTM4 does this automatically for the rear wheels) to the wheel with traction... this may be on TrailSport only.

    8" maximum ground clearance, but the converter underneath is hanging even lower; hence we hear the metal grinding sound even on tiny bumps. My 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has 8.7" clearance. In this video alone we heard about 5 metal grinds! I don't care about the stitching or the tactile knobs.

      9.5" would be good for what this vehicle purports to be. Badging be damned, I couldn't care less about advertising its off-road "prowess". They got the off-road robots sorted, or so it seems - now to add some clearance to give the skidders a little bit of a reprieve...

    I realize it messes with fuel economy, but 8" of ground clearance on an "off road" vehicle with a longer wheelbase is just not enough. Adjustable ride height features add complexity and cost, but it would also give the vehicle capability to traverse more terrains that would otherwise abuse its skid plates.

    Continental Terrain Contact A/T are excellent mild A/T tires. Pretty suprising that Honda put such "aggressive" A/Ts on it. They have very high rolling resistance, so MPG will absolutely be impacted.
    That Pilot TS needs a lift from the factory. I'm surprised they said they developed it on that trail, since it was smacking the ground quite a bit.

      Subaru has let their AWD system go once they went to open rear diffs and brake modulated traction control. The ivtm4 is the same as SH-AWD from Acura products since the pilot is an MDX with different suspension and a third row. It's a very capable AWD system that Subaru hasn't matched.

    Honda definitely has the right formula for this one. When the Passport get this refresh later in the fall (Honda just confirmed it and it will be 2024MY), I think I might pre order one. The 4Runner while capable is way too outdated for my 80% on road driving and I'm not stoked about Toyota moving to a Turbo 4 for the next Gen. So the updated Passport is shaping up to be the next best thing: good offload capability, newish tech combined with old school powertrain, and Japanese reliability.

    • @miniaddict4534
      @miniaddict4534 Před rokem +1

      If you want a car with ‘the tech’ to lull you to sleep on the way to Costco, you’re not in the market for a 4Runner or any off road car. The low tech is the whole reason why a 4Runner or any traditional 4x4 with solid axles will outperform this Pilot every time.

    • @jonathannguyen4355
      @jonathannguyen4355 Před rokem

      @@miniaddict4534 yeah they already said they’re not in the market for a 4Runner nor any off-road vehicle as they do 80% highway. I love Honda and Toyota but the 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport is rated at 18 city 23 highway, so I might as well keep my Tacoma which is lifted 3 inches, has 32 inch all terrains, and gets me 16 to 17 city and 21 to 22 highway. I would only be getting 1 to 2 MPG better and would be sacrificing way too much offroad. Its still impressive though if you dont mind frequently scraping the hell out of your underbody. I've been on that same trail and never scraped once or had any slipping.

    Low range? Without it you can go up things that you won’t want to come down. Sure it has descent control, but I prefer to let my transfer case do the work.

      Hill Descent? Did you see that thing flying down the hill. No way that will pass.

      They're pretty good stereos. Not as good as the els you'd get in an Acura but as a bit of an audiophile, I could live with it

    Looks like a descent vehicle. I like that it has a regular transmission and a full size spare. Not really a fan of that particular color or the price.

    Impressive engineering, but not enough ground clearance (I don't enjoy the sound of skid plates scraping on rock). Why they put this engineering into a luxury oriented (leather seats) family hauling minivan is puzzling. I guess it's great if your taking a troop of boy scouts to the trail head, but I think this design would attract more buyers if it was sized like the Passport with an inch more ground clearance.

    I like the car as much as i like an average 3row cruiser. Nothing special. Besides 50k is way to much for a honda, don't care about heated seats
