    If you’re not going to actually off road, it’d be silly to get the 4runner. The Passport is just an objectively better road-going vehicle, and costs $10-20k less when you consider the Toyota’s markups.

    • @jakes5530
      @jakes5530 Před rokem +7

      @@joeblack1052 the passport is surprisingly capable until the going gets really tough. You should watch some reviews of it. Obviously the 4runner is better, but the passport is fine for many peoples off roading needs.

      Your pricing claims are BS. I paid $45k for a 2022 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium (with no markup - only suckers are still paying markups)). That's only $1500 more than the Passport Trailsport. And the 4Runner includes a trailer hitch and wiring in that price - while it's $1200 extra in a Passport. So the vehicle prices are essentially cost the same. I test drove both and I totally agree the Passport has better on-road manners (it's cushy with an excellent AWD system) as the 4Runner does have stiffer-yet-floaty truck-like handling, which isn't for everyone. However, the adaptive cruise control on the Passport is terrible. Take it on a forest road, and the 4Runner destroys the Passport. And the 4Runner is actually made in Japan (a dying breed) and has better resale value.
      If you regularly go off-road (rutted forest roads with big pot holes) absolutely buy a 4Runner. If you don't really go off road often, nor need to plow through deep snow, and want superior handling in light snow on sealed roads, get a Passport. If you want a vehicle that gives you that "hell yeah" feeling as you approach it - get a 4Runner. There is a unique emotional appeal and personality to the 4Runner, with a "king of the road" driving position. The Passport is just generic/boring. But it's a perfectly sensible choice if the 4Runner doesn't resonate with you emotionally and you don't see yourself leaving sealed roads often. For my personal use case, the 4Runner was the better vehicle. But I see the merits of the Passport - it's just that saving money (per your claim) isn't one of them.

      True but in 20 years the 4Runner will still be going strong and the Passport will be recycled into beer cans.

      The passport offers reasonable reliability and has more features than the 4runner. The passport will handle dirt trails better than your standard SUV. The trail sport is even better.
      Unless you're going rock crawling I don't see the need for the 4runner. Even if you can rock crawl the tires won't withstand sharp jagged rocks.

    Current owner of a 2020 Passport Elite. Traded my 2015 4Runner for the newer Honda. Miss my 4Runner BUT the Passport has been awesome, flawless. More bells and whistles for the money and the carlike ride is more comfortable. The older we get, we love the auto open/close tailgate. We also like the interior more (black headliner)With that said, we would buy the 4Runner again. The legend, the goat, the 4Runner.
    Also, please take note. If your battery ever needs to be replaced (or jumped) in the Passport, you don’t have easy access to it. We had to have ours towed. The battery does not sit traditionally on top of the engine. BEWARE.

    • @ritchierichh
      @ritchierichh Před rokem +3

      You don't buy a 4Runner for comfort, more for reliability and dependability. In a hypothetical situation, if you're in the outback and your battery dies, how long would it take you to access the battery (assuming you had a charging kit) Vs the 4Runner? Passport is great for city driving, but I wouldn't trust it off the beaten path.

    I'm dying for a new 4Runner with better MPG and a modern interior!! They are completely different vehicles. The Passport is a great crossover but it's not a real 4x4 SUV. The Passport has enough capability since most people don't go off road very often.

    We are pushing 60K on my wife’s 2020 Passport Sport. It has been flawless. Did I mention that she is getting 27 MPG in the Passport. My choice would be the 4Runner.

    4 Runners are so dated and Toyotas interior on a whole are still stuck in 90s. Hondas over Toyotas all day.

    • @mac4life72
      @mac4life72 Před rokem

      It’s personal preference , it’s ancient ,outdated but it’s bulletproof and would last for so many years if you do regular maintenance, Hondas are reliable cars too but I prefer 4 runner over passport because it’s feels you are driving a truck and still made in Japan

  • @chrysokos

    good video-we purchased a white 40th year and couldnt be happier-we to looked at the Honda products but went with the last of the greats because when the 6th Gen comes out it will never be the same-4 cylinder turbo Hybrid with a lot more Tech in it-no thanks will stick to simple proven reliability.

      Definitely if you’re just going to do Grocery store runs and dropping kids off to school, the Honda is for you. But if you’re gonna do serious Off-roading and maybe towing more than just a lawnmower the 4Runner is what a man should have.

  • @lajlijthoj

  • @rampar77
    @rampar77 Před 2 měsíci

    I would definitely choose the Passport because the 4-Runner was under power and handled like a truck and not too stable on highway speed. Also the Passport had the advantage of full time AWD.

  • @LeadfootLou
    @LeadfootLou Před 10 měsíci

    Ben did not have to admit he was biased. It was very apparent. The 2023 passport Trailsport trim is just an appearance trim. If you’re going off-roading then the 4Runner TRD Pro wins hands down. Personally I’d get the Off Road Premium trim instead. It’s around $7k cheaper depending on options. The passport Trailsport is at least $12k cheaper than the 4Runner TRD Pro. If you’re never going to go off-roading, then choose the Passport. I’ve driven both. The passport is a lot smoother on normal roads.

  • @Sheng614
    @Sheng614 Před rokem +2

    Trailsport is just a cosmetic package, while TRD Pro is the full off-road monster, hardly a comparison

    • @terence4427
      @terence4427 Před rokem +1

      Watch "the Car Care Nut" videos and you will find the TRD Pro is also pretty much a "cosmetic package". Not much different than the other 4Runner trims.

    • @bobvance-
      @bobvance- Před rokem +2

      Lmfao. How is the TRD Pro a off-road monster? I bet you don't even know what the suspension difference is.
      Besides, 99% of 4runner owners would never even take it off road.

    I personally prefer the ride quality of the 4runner over unibody SUVs. (but that's just me). I owned a 2003 4runner, which I bought new 21 years ago. I just gave it to my son and replaced it with a new SR5 premium 4runner. I looked at the Honda trailsport, but for me, it came down to 4runners unmatched reliability and its ride quality. I just prefer the body on frame construction.

  • @Aschoolbusandsimulatorfan2219

    You got a break warning because the truck crossed your projection of travel. The road was narrow and the two of you approached eachother in such a way that the emergency accident avoidance system perceived the truck as cutting you off and a potential collision.

    good comparison.. I wish the 3rd Gen Passport was a bit more serious off-road like the 2nd Gen Passport.. seems like the 2023 Pilot is more an evolution to the 2nd Gen Passport.. clearance.. real steel skid plates. etc.

      @Jane Thorson definitely newer than the 4runner. Not sure if that's the word I want to use but I'm still half asleep and can't think straight yet. I really like that honda, so much space with the seats down, my aunt had one and I thought it really felt fast.

    • @myetoob23
      @myetoob23 Před rokem +1

      @user-ij6ww4sq8y those Honda v6s definitely move faster than the 4runners. 3 years ago I test drove a highlander, 4runner, and pilot. The pilot was the roomiest, best handling and fastest out of the 3; the 4runner had the best sound system and was the most off-road capable; the highlander had the best looks imo

  • @phil8761
    @phil8761 Před rokem

    Not a fair comparison at all. One actually has off-road equipment, and the other just had an off-road look. One is built like a truck, the other is more like a crossover. The Trailsport package won't even come close until Honda adds the extra equipment they said they would next year. Even then, the 4runner will beat it.
