  • A Silent Voice or The Shape of Voice. Possibly the best film and most necessary movie about mental health, bullying, anxiety and growing up. This story was so sad and emotional. What a beautiful film and we hope you enjoy our reactions to it! Stick around after our reacts and watch our discussion review.
    The story centers around Shoko, a deaf girl who experiences lots of bullying, and Shoya her abuser that comes to understand the faults of what he had done and the cost of his actions. What an amazing anime film and I'm interested in reading the manga. 聲の形

    if you rewatch the child singing scene with Kawai, Shoko is already looking at Kawai and Kawai purposefully faked singing too early to make Shoko mess up
    She also immediately frames situations to make herself out to be the victim when she’s the one causing problems. At the very end where she talks about the cranes, in the manga it’s revealed she didn’t do it and tried to make the whole class do it instead and then take credit for it.

Just blaming Ishida and exposing him, when he also knew he was not the only one and he was to blame too.
    Also the bullying of Ishida towards Shouko happened in elementary school, they weren't teenagers they were kids, so I understand Ishida more, i think if someone had talked to him he wouldn't have acted that way. Also the movie shows that bullying the bully is not the right way to resolve things and that the bully is not the only one to blame.

    The Manga made the dark haired girl get more sympathy by showing her actions were fueled by jealousy and while still a terrible reason she grows out of it, also the movie made Shoko's mom seem better than in the manga, in the manga she knew about the bullying earlier and told her daughter to keep going to school and tough it out, making her daughter feel guilty for complaining. Oh and the blond girl was they worst in the manga, she literally was gaslighting people into thinking she was always innocent and never mean but showed she had more moments of being suddenly cruel with her words. even his buddy Tomohiro had compulsive lying issues that ended up hurting others and partially wanted to push away Shoya's new friends so he wouldn't lose him.

    There is one detail that really sold me on Shoya’s character. It was during the scene where the principal asks if the class knew about Shoko getting bullied. On first watch I notice it, I just moved along with the teacher calling Shona out and the class blaming him although we know he wasn’t completely at fault. However, on rewatch, you can see before the teacher singled him out, HE WAS ABOUT TO ADMIT TO HIS MISTAKE ON HIS OWN. He nervously starts to raise his hand, but the teacher shouts first and it’s too late. Shoya was seriously a good kid, just like all of them. But kids just don’t know the consequences of their actions, it’s the adults job to correct them and teach them how to do better next time, not just single them out and put all the blame on them. (Looking at you Mr Four eyes). The worst part is, he never even gets the chance to apologise to Nishimiya, partly because no one even pointed out why his actions were wrong.

    Honestly I think the best thing about the movie is that it tries really hard not to have the generic good character/ bad character thing…even down to Shoya’s old friends pulling him out of the water after he fell in… the director once said that she didn’t wanna play God because it wasn’t her place…. She just presented you with the characters with as much nuance as she was could …yes this particular movie is about Shoya and his “redemption” ( more like his journey to learning how to love himself and also learning how to forge emotional connections in a healthy way) but it could have just as easily been about Naoka you know…we could just as easily be watching her redemption, it’s just not her story. The movie goes out of its way to show us that no one is completely bad but also no one is completely good( even Shoko, who is the most innocent beautiful character has a hard time seeing outside of herself to know how her actions affect those who love her)… everyone has flaws but your flaws don’t make you less human or less worthy of love… the goal is just to let yourself be loved and be the best version of you that you can be
    As a result I don’t really hate anyone in this movie…except Miki(?) she’s the fuckin worst!

    I've always loved how this movie takes on Ueno's character. She's a definite bully who needs to solve some things personally but so was Shoya in middle school. Everyone is so quick to put Ueno in the same "cut them off, don't talk to them" box that Shoya was put into which very quickly spiraled downwards. I don't think Ueno would've developed as much self-hate as Shoya but she definitely needs good people to be around too and this movie repeatedly shows that.

    As a teacher, I would LOVE to show this in school. You have to be really really careful about what you show in school though. Basically, movies like this that talk a lot about depression, anxiety, and suicide/suicidal ideation can be triggering for some students who may be suffering from these issues. This is the kind of movie I probably wouldn't be able to get permission to show until, earliest, 7th or 8th grade and it wouldn't be a quick thing. It would probably need to be built into a larger unit with lots of discussion and context to make it safe. Because of how much time that would take, it's not likely that you could justify showing this movie in a class, unless you're a health teacher or teaching a media studies class. However, if your administration is cool enough, I could see this being a very cool focal point for a school wide bullying prevention seminar!

      I agree, you have to approach it carefully but I think topics like this are definitely something kids should be taught about, it's a lot more powerful of a tool to teach the effects of isolation, depression, exclusion and suicidal thoughts.
      You can think of it the same as sex education, if you just avoid the topic the students will eventually come across sexual experimentation without any reliable guidance, likewise with bullying and exclusion schools often just say "bullying is not tolerated" but kids don't really understand the nuances of what counts as bullying or the long term effects bullying and isolation have on people.

      If only, schools usually don't care about extra education or what could help, so while this would be really great for schools to implement hell even in English class as it's is really well written. It would definitely be a shake up from book after book after book which gets annoying real fast just to watch a related movie after reading the book. If you don't want it to be a class discussion like it easily could be for health, English or any media/health related class you could at least show this to a 12th graders on their final week as at that moment they have been through the exact same timeline that the movie has and thus at it's most relatable

    One part that completely got left out of the story is the elementary teacher's apathy and negligence towards his students, and how that influenced them at a really young age. He saw Shoko as a problem he didn't want to have to deal with, and didn't spare any extra effort to help her feel welcome. It's no wonder that his students acted the same way.

    For everyone who didn’t read the manga, Shoko’s mom is being so hard, expressionless and not afraid of getting physical is because in the manga they explained how her husband and his family despised of having disability daughter, they know Shoko is deaf and decided to divorced her and leave her entire family, so her mother is alone and have to raise her daughters alone with only granma help, and she become so hard towards Shoko because she thought it was for her own good, so she raised her as a normal girl and don’t want to put her in the special treatment or special school so she can be accepted as a normal human being, it’s hurtful really, because she came out to be mean, but she did what she think it’s good for her daughter, to be tough, she don’t want her to easily get hurt or give up well bcoz she’s through so much pain too…as a mother i can see why she did what she did…
    Oh, and also, Yuzuru was purposely cutting her hair short and dressed like a boy for protecting her sister 🥲 she knows her sister gone through a lot, with her mother being rigid and stern and hence her granma said that yuzuru has a pure heart 🥲

    I love this movie so much! It's one of my favorites. I actually watched it for the first time while I was learning American Sign Language. It was really interesting to see the Japanese signs and how similar some of them are to American signs. Some are even the same. I really like how this movie allows a Deaf character to take the center stage, and how it showcases some of the ways Deaf people are mistreated and sometimes not fully accommodated in environments like school, depending on what kind of school they attend.
    Did you know in the past, not too long ago, Deaf students would be smacked on the hands/wrists by teachers for using sign language in school? They were forced to learn how to read lips and to speak English. It was really horrible and cruel, and I'm glad that things have changed quite a bit since then.
    This movie is so beautifully done. I love how it deals with mental health and bullying, and I absolutely love the visual representation of Shoya's social anxieties, the way that he feels everyone is constantly harshly judging him and he can't look at them. And the visual and audio symbolism at the end of the movie when he finally opens up and can truly experience the world around him for the first time in years.

      Idk maybe they just want to chill relax and watch a movie without having to watch the subtittles 24/7. I am sad they didnt watch it subbed but in dub the actual VA for shoko is deaf so it hits hard as well.

      @Dogukan Demirel damn chill out !! It’s their choice . Some people really can’t catch up to the subtitles , they don’t want to not having fully understand the movie , so they switch to the dubbed . Take your problem to yourself and relax buddy

    27:27 That's what it meant Suraj. It went from "A Silent Voice" to "The Shape of Voice". At least that's how I take it as. Coz I like both the names and think of it as that it went from being silent whether having your voice or not to trying to figure out yourself aka your voice and what you are aka it's shape and hence the "The Shape of Voice".

    I don't know what's on the rest of the pole but I hope weathering with you and the other movies by that director are on there.
    And again if you ever want a series in the vein of these films I would highly suggest Your lie in April, & reLife.

    Welcome to Kyoto Animation, you've already been introduced to the works of this magnificent studio via Violet Evergarden, hopefully that's viewed fully in this channel, but hopefully this sparks an interest in watching more of their works because all of them are basically good to great. They all great and have great quality. Mostly all sol, slice of life, slower anime but they're beyond worth checking

    Ueno character is not as bad as u think. It's just her way of doing things. But she is honest. She also spoke so real things too. Her comment on shouko's mom was partially correct. Ueno wanted shouko to be strong in first place rather than being sorry for everything. U need to see this from a broad perspective

    • @j.w.971
      @j.w.971 Před rokem

      @mexzan9 so slapping her, throwing her against a fence, trying to slap her again, is supposed to make Shoko strong? What kind of bullshit logical is that from Ueno? Again no sympathy from me for Ueno

    • @mexzan9466
      @mexzan9466 Před rokem

      @@j.w.971 I'm not asking to show sympathy towards ueno. I'm just telling the fact the Ueno is better than most people think... actually they fail to understand her character. She was pushing shouko against wall nd slapping becuz she was pissed at her for being pathetic. She was mad becuz Ishida almost died trying to save her. It was shown earlier in the movie that ueno mentioned herself that she was ignoring shouko becuz she wanted to change her approach to things. Ofcourse the way she did was wrong. But she wanted shouko to be more confident in herself rather than feeling inferior. That's why Ueno hated shouko ...also there was little jealousy

    • @mexzan9466
      @mexzan9466 Před rokem

      @@j.w.971 not to forget they they are teenagers and still learning. But Ueno is being honest and bringing facts to the table about shouko's upbringing....her guardians failed to understand shouko ...so that's why shouko always felt inferior and hated herself
