You girls hit the nail on the head with your first thought. Ishida took one look at Nishimya and liked what he saw and her being deaf caught his imagination and then her messed up pronunciation made him nervous to be around her because Japan is a culture that focuses on fitting in.
The dark haired girl liked Ishida and was angry that he was interested in her. She bullied Nishimya because Ishida paid her attention.
Nishimya was abandoned by her father and thus she believes she is the shame of her family in Japanese culture, and now there is a boy who looks her in the eyes and she knows what it means as she is deaf and thus gains communication by other than talk. She sees the trips in the hallway, the watching her from afar at recess as she is abandoned by the girls and knows he is in love with her, but when she talks to him he becomes nervous and throws dirt at her scared that he will be ostracized if he is with her at recess.
So what happens? Nishimya gains what she always wanted. Ishida returns to her world and by his eyes she knows he loves her still. So she hangs out with him and realizes he is nervous, shy, depressed, and still tells her what he has always told her, "Shape your voice" meaning don't speak and rather sign because he is so nervous of her voice and pronunciation in the public culture within Japan. As Nishimya realizes she is the reason he is no longer confident and happy she realizes the dark haired girl loves Ishida.
Ueno loves Ishida, but Nishimya looked immediately to Ishida the moment Ueno suggested they were an item. This is the number one question in Nishimya's mind for then finally a man will have undone all that her father taught her by rejecting the whole family due to the shame of her, Nishimya.
So she sits at the fireworks display happy that the boy LOVES HER as she always wished and before it is over she leaves figuring if it was over she could not lose everyone. She is going home to kill herself so that her boy, Ishida, can live a good life in Japan, probably with the dark haired girl, Ueno. Her sacrifice so Ishida can finally fit into society. Her father was right. She is the shame of her family and her love.
This movie is the most powerful movie in the world to come from Japan because our two main heros need to reject Japanese culture of fitting into culture and learning to never care what the world thinks of you. Imagine a movie teaching you to remember the greatest thing in Japan is that it took on Western Culture. Our two main characters are even teaching it to all the other characters in the whole movie and why?
Because Ishida's sister is the one dating outside her own Japanese culture. You never see her face as Japanese culture would be ashamed of her for leaving her own culture's norms. Yet what does she have? Happiness: she has a child, a man, and she tells her brother to defy the laws and cultures of Japan and to go get her sister from the local elementary school even as he is supposed to remain in his house only until the school determines he can enter Japanese society. Imagine a school expelling you for a week for jumping from a bridge and during that week he is not to walk the public streets of Japan. Ishida's sister doesn't care what Japanese culture says. SHE LIVES HER LIFE BY WESTERN CULTURE and is likely the influence that got her brother to think beyond cultural norms. You only see her legs as she tells Ishida to go pick up her daughter and her face is always blacked out. Her black husband is never blacked out as Japan accepts American military men and honors Western culture, but they refuse to accept the Japanese girl who becomes one with him. The point of the lesson of our two main characters as they teach their friends is that their life will be deeper and better to take on Western culture further, for even if they are blacked out, they live the life they want.

I am so glad that people in this fanbase don't try to ignore this because there are lots of "wholesome" fanbases which will ignore the truth (coughhorifromhorimiyaistoxicasfffcough) but the whole message of this beautiful movie was to be truly honest and virtuous so it's so good that everywhere i go, people pick this up. The people in this fanbase are genuinely the best and it's a shame that anime communities aren't more often like this

Around the 21st minute of the video, the main character is confessed to a confession and gets it wrong, but this is a line that is often used metaphorically in Japan.
Over 110 years ago, there is an anecdote that a famous Japanese novelist named Natsume Soseki, when he was a teacher, translated ``I love you'' into Japanese as ``The moon is beautiful.'' However, the true meaning is unknown.

I shed at least 50 to 100 tears or potentially more throughout this movie and I am so happy I was able to watch it knowing basically nothing about it, this movie hit me hard as the second anime I watched properly ever, I can't put my feelings into words but this movie is the definition of perfection, not a single scene could have been done better.

I agree he was gross but also a typical teacher because a lot of the time, they don't care but act like they care at the final moment and I'm sure it only makes students more inclined to misbehave because why listen to someone who has so much more life experience yet couldn't bring themselves to be unhypocritical?
