My late son introduced me to so much good music including Alabama Shakes and this song. I can’t tell you how many times I asked him after he died why he just couldn’t hold on one more day, one more night, one more minute. I love this song and think about him every time I hear it.
I'm so sorry, how did he pass away?
Stay strong❤
So sorry for your family's loss, you gotta keep the family together. Be strong... Keep listening your son is there with you.
When you look like a guidance counselor but sing like a legend

How in the world did I only just hear this song in 2023?! Simple, brilliant. Those vocals are killing me.
Same here, this song blew me away!
Same, just heard it on my trip to Colorado
I was channel surfing years ago and spotted/heard the Shakes on a Saturday Night Live. A show I hadn't watched in years. Her voice captured my interest, and I started watching SNL again every week to insure I would catch the new bands!
@@jamescrawford2341 That was their big entrance I feel in mainstream..That performance was ammmmmazing

Im a stage hand. Seen alot of bands, heard ALOT of music live. Ohana festival 2022 Brittany and her band came and played mid afternoon main stage. Until then i hadnt heard of her. Myself and 4 of my other stage hands who were on break enjoyed her set from the eagles nest backstage. I couldn't move, i couldn't speak. Literally took my soul for a ride unlike it had ever been on before. They played this song about halfway through their set and this one brought me to my knees! FOREVER A BRITTANY AND ALAMABA SHAKES FAN!!!
Hell yeah brother!!!
Amen buddy. That chic is heaven seant.
What band is she with now? Is she fronting with just her name?
Great line 'Took my soul for a ride'!
Who’s still here in May 2024
🤫✋🏾 I just don't wanna wait
I'll be here in June too. My youtube algorithm somehow autoplays this one for me at the perfect time when I've had a shit week at work and clocked out drinking a few beers and got like one or 2 more days to go. GOT to hold on
I'm just finding this is may 2024

That soul. Those pipes. 100% feeling. This is music. Guitars, drums, and bass are dope as well. Damn good band.
You know a band is good when they use the live version as their music video!
True dat
And you know a band is good when they make such a good song like this with only one chord though out the whole song
I personally love the feral cat sounds that mince out of the much hated Ms. Joanna Newsom. Also, the female lead of Carolina Chocolate Drops (can't remember her name o- o) has a badass southern singin' voice a lot like Brittany.
Good music NEEDS to xome back to the forefront. .... I wish to do inhuman things to radio devices, (depraved, horrible things,) even when I know they don't control the insufferable noise that is deemed popular and diarrhea'd out of their speakers.
Sorry F. Mercury
All I hear is Radio kaka.
+bieberhole69 lol! Great comment! Kudos! Also kudos on your screen name! Oh and kudos to the actual musicians as well because they are good and this is their video afterall
+Daniel Kindh Hate to say it, but there's two chords, F and C.
Her voice is unreal. Aboslutely freaking fantastic.
My husband reached 69 .He played this song for a whole year before he passed away.I love You Alabama Shakes
This song should have 1 billion views, so underrated.
How is it underrated people listen to what they like. The views are an accurate measurement of what people like. I love this song Ya baby hold on and get down you go G
You have to be white, blonde and extremely attractive for that. Music just doesn’t work that way anymore
It's very underrated and this song moves your soul
@hamedahmadi1675. I concur and so do 1.5 billion other people.
I agree 💯💯
"There is two kinds of music. The good and the bad. I play the good kind"
- Louis Armstrong
I'm 77, so why do I think this is worthwhile? Because it is brilliant.
Because we remember music.
Perhaps because it reminds us of Bruce Springstein, rock, acid rock, mind music. The good old days of Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Woodstock. She does it well.
I'm 66 and I agree.
Hope you’re still doin well!
@@kiwis.4228 Thank you so much for asking. I'm fine. I hope that you and those close to you are well and continuing to enjoy real music.

It's been 30 days since I was told I have cancer. It's taken this long to get a second opinion and my port in. In two days I start dose dense chemotherapy. I will be honored to listen to this song during the next six or seven months of my treatments. I thank Alabama Shakes for sending me this message.
P.S. It doesn't hurt that I'm an Alabama girl!
P.P.S. Here's my update. I've held on! Still around, had a recurrence, post traumatic GROWTH (how bout that!?!?). On immunotherapy and doing well. Love to all of you who sent me love and prayers and good vibes. I had no idea so many of you reached out until today, my 3 year anniversary). Wish I could reply individually to you. Make your day great!

Good luck, friend. I'm battling cancer myself at the moment. It took me about a month to start treatments as well just because of port and had to get kidney stents put in. It's a rough road. The radiation is what really kicked my ass. Hang in there .
@@ramham24 Thank you. Sending you good vibes too.
I am going through cancer with my mom. I know how it feels but you are not alone. You have made a statement about how good your taste is and made it to the people who feel you. I am with you and I am sure the rest here are as well. Good luck and the positive attitude is what gets you through.
good luck!!
Wishing you all positive thoughts to get through it the shit. Lost both parents to malignant melanoma & 2 best friends to cancer. This is the kind of music that I love. It's REAL people in a room together making real music from the soul. Not a bunch of computers doing all the "music". We need more if this.

My dad died feb of this year and. It has been the longest time of my life i lost my best friend. My person that helped me thru life. Miss that man more then anything. He held on more then most. I wish i was as strong.
her voice sounds like someone melted down pure gold and found a way to make a melody out of it
Yessd
Nah, not gold. More like someone melted down a big chunk of rusty iron and added some honey to it. I mean that all in a good way. Gold is like some pop singer. This chick has some pipes and a roughness to her singing. Been listening to them most of the morning with my 1 year old daughter, dancing and singing along. Hoping I can get her started on the good stuff so she doesn't get into just the pop stuff that her friends are into when she gets older. I was listening to 60's 70's rock and old blues before I was a teenager and never got into most of the contemporary music of my youth. Fortunately I moved before high school and it was cool to like that music at the new school.
Exactly...
Robert M , # C00L COMMENT ! My 26 year old son introduced me to Alabama Shakes and this 61 year old widow is dancing in my bed as I listen to her voice which is a gift from God ! Have a blessed up day today ! " ....Got to hold on !....
@@maem7636 thanks. Music it's something that everyone can agree to. Her voice is impressive.
First time I heard of this group was on SNL. Nothing flashy until they start to play and sing. I was blown away. It was like a throwback to the 60s and 70s where real talent and voice was what mattered.
So impressed by this group
You can say that again.....raw talent......not auto-tuned
And it's about goodness not greed or flash or HATE
YuMMMMMMMMMMM
its wild how something as corny as modern SNL can put a spotlight on some unbelievably raw talent
I'm listening to them for the first time ever because Dave Grohl recommends them on Hot Ones. Wow. I'm in tears. Alabama Shakes, you have shaken me to the core. Thank you
You nailed it. They are the best I’ve heard in a long time!
I am 68 and learn from my son about new bands ! This lady's voice is pure gold and soul !
Hey thanks for inspiring me. I'm 58, and every day I somehow live in this place, where I gotta hold on... and damn, I feel like the whole world looks at me funny, I just gotta hold on. Fighting many forms of character defects, addictions, and other issues designed to kill my spirit... the song lets me know what I gotta do. These comments listed here let me know I'm not alone. And what I gotta hold on to, that's the interesting part. I gotta hold on to something not so easily touched, not so easily seen. Sometimes it's hope, sometimes it's God, sometimes trust, and often times I don't know what, but the energy of it is captured in this song. C'mon Brittney... you gotta hold on, and if I can see you doin' it, holding on, I believe I can too. THANKS
Hold On, Brother.

I can hear sweet Janis Joplin singing right along with this young lady... Sing it proud and sing it loud with that soulful voice sweet child... I want to thank stclemmons1969 for telling me about the Alabama Shakes... Thanks for the share & God Bless to All
Hey Gail, glad you slipped in. Spread the word. Grass roots word of mouth is a fun way to hear and spread really good non corporate type music.
stclemmons1969 Morning my friend... I will share this with everyone... Thanks again for directing me here... Have a good one & God Bless
stclemmons1969 Found this one through Lake Street Dive. Either way - awesome. Keep directing people to real music, stc.
Simon Greenslade One place I like on CZcams is KEXP. Radio station that has live performances in their studio with excellent mixing/engineering. They have ALL SORTS of music that I would have never heard of if it wasn't for them. If you like real broken hearted bluesy soul check out Charles Bradley's KEXP set (and check out his amazing story too).
Keep me on your list when you find a new band worth giving a listen to. Later.
PS checked out Lake Street Dive (or LSD for short...lol) and love stand up bass and singers with red lipstick!
My mom jammed this song every morning since it came out!😢. I close my eyes and see her dancing at the kitchen counter planning her day or cooking breakfast. R.I.P. Mom. I'm still holding on🩵🤍

This song brings tears to my eyes every time..whether it be happy tears or sad tears. I've battled addiction for years and am finally clean and getting myself back up and holding on.. Plus my name is Brittany and my dad calls me baby girl...what a small, beautiful world we live in

i know these guys dont need ANY validation for this amazing album but i really hope they get that grammy.
Hopefully man.
Grammy for album of the year? They are very good, but come on, that would be a bit unfair.. And rock albums win all the time..
+slutthefuckup - They won a GRAMMY!!!! 2016! nice one!
They won!!!!
and they did
i have heard this group so many times, but im to old or to deaf too hear how awesome she sings the blues. "Didn't think I would make it to 22" here I am 30 years later. You gotta holddddddddddddd on!
Hey I'm 70.heard this yesterday takes me back to my hippie days .I lo ❤️ it.beautiful.xxxx
@@annesnagg3255 that gives me hope. 70 is new 50 right
I’m struggling with alcoholism with two beautiful kids this song gave me a smile
wurd up to you for being realistic because YOU know what your going through.. Thats Cool. Get you some help when YOU ready girl. My parents were alcoholics and it damaged us. BUT my mamma loved us unconditionally!!! But alcoholism will destroy your family. I promise you that. I love you and know that you will find the strength to move forward . My parents would have never admitted to struggling with alcohol, and they were committed to that, till the day it killed them. I miss them.
She is such a badass... I love her voice
Man these are some freaking talented musicians. What a great band.
I'm almost 70 now, and a fan of the 70's music ... no pun intended. This is my kind of music. I heard this song, or parts of it in the movie "Dog" tonight. Just wow, what a voice, melody, guitar playing and song!!! I'd never heard of Brittany Howard or the Alabama Shakes. (guess I need to keep up more lol) But, I'm a big fan of both now, and look forward to listening to more of their music.
I guess i'm a little too late to find a gem as a band like Alabama Shakes. This is just too gooood!!!!
You know how sometimes things are punk even though they aren't punk? Because this is that.
+JackIntheBoxGaming
Hell yes! Punk as fuccc!
+JackIntheBoxGaming yes yes yes yes...just like magic you just gotta look for it where its hiding out...
Yes.... There are these genres of music that have appeared because us punks had to grow up and evolve
+Angela Grow-Vidito gaslight anthem is a pretty great example of that
+JackIntheBoxGaming This ain't punk. This is straight up fantastic rock and roll.
Dear Alabama Shakes,I am participating in the Out of the Darkness Walks this morning in Maryland, in my brother's memory, Joey Blanton-Harris, who died by suicide. He was a phenomenal musician and human being. I have been an emotional mess all night, and needed a song to warm my heart and get me going. I simply googled "hold on", as it was the theme I felt the walk represents. Your song was on the list, and was the first one I clicked on. Was I glad I found it! Thank you! I am ready for my mission today. YOU ROCK! God bless you real good. ~Carol Borrelli
sorry for your lost. just hold on
pebblescb
Much love and strength to you. I lost my brother to suicide when I was thirteen. I'm 26 now, which was his age at the time. I've considered doing the same many times but the thought of putting my parents through the loss of a second son has kept me alive.
This song appeared in my queue shortly I lost my mother to alzhaimers then my older brother passed shortly after at 49. This song is so powerful and no coincidence that it appears to the ones who need to hear and heal . Thank you for your gift of music and music's magical ability to heal and inspire . I listen to this every time I consider giving up. I don't give up and will continue to strive . Music heals all.
I hope that you're finding healing and life is being kind to you ..
Yes music heals all wounded hearts! I testify!! Never give up! Your family would want it that way!!
Back playing my playlist. This number grabbed my attention when released. That driving chug of a rhythm, the slow crescendo, the kbd pushing with simple chords, the lead guitar is tasty, the bass is just driving it along, and then there's Brittney, holding it all together. Still awesome to me after a decade.
Some of the best music out right now. LOVE how she belts it out from her soul. Like Janis did
+lola2win I got the Janis vibe too. If Janis Joplin and Joan Armatrading had a child together.
Yesss ha ha. Oh damn, I love Joan Armatrading !! This girl gives me chills.
+lola2win Janis couldn't touch her with ANYTHING!
+lola2win My thoughts exactly. When I first heard Brittany sing, I thought now that's a woman and band that Janis would probably love to sing with. Brittany is a real force of nature.
Definitely!! I love singers like that. There is a new band out of Boston bringing that soul singing. Check out No Hugs Live @THEBIRN - American Stalker
nobody, Nobody, can match the soul and emotion in brittany howards voice. fight me on this
Amen!
Nobody? Have you ever listened to late period Billie Holiday? With a statement like that, I don't think you have. Educate yourself.
Yeah I know who Billie Holiday is, and she's fantastic and I still like Brittany better. Psshh "Educate yourself" my ass. Try not to be such a party pooper
triumphrider611 lol, the original poster said “fight me on this” so the other person here was just arguing the claim.
A lot of musicians can match the emotion, the soul is another story.
This song (Brittany Howard’s amazing talent) has held, cradled, supported, pushed, and lifted me through some of the hardest times of my life.
Thanks Brittany & Bama Shakes. Good lesson in self love and faith in the process of life as it unfolds.Y'all rock!
