Most of the people that have never been to Mexico are very ignorant about Mexico.... I live in Portugal and the other day I saw a Portuguese woman saying that Mexico was a poor country in all aspects including in its cinema industry and telenovelas.... and that really annoyed me.... specially people from a country (portugal) that is not that rich... and knowing that many things in Mexico are developed... one main thing to blame is the American movies and series: always portraying Mexico as a poor and dangerous country... and portraying Mexicans most of the time as criminals and bad people... just another American show was released called "coyote"... guess what it is all about? Mexico must start show itself throughout the world as a developed and rich country

I'm glad that you're back tío Paul. I agree completely with what you mentioned about foreigners talking about how "cheap" is to live in Mexico.
Recently there has been a lot of videos from US citizens who move to Mexico (usually to Merida) and comment about how cheap it is to live there. The problem is that, with them moving in, a 2nd wave of gentrification has begun.
Eventually, some local people from Merida will have to move out because products will increase prices and housing as well.
I have nothing against foreigners moving in, is just that unfortunately this is the way the economy works here and the people who pay for this are the locals.

As far as I can see, many foreigners forget that despite some issues like those related to drugs Mexico is now ranking #15 among the 20 richiest economies in the world and it is getting stronger and getting closer rapidly to the top ten every single year (with no pandemic of course).
Sadly, many think that comming to Mexico is like taking a trip back in time to the old sleepy and dusty towns lost in the middle of the desert but I am pretty sure some of them would be really shocked to see the large amount of skyscrapers and other large and amazing buldings under construction in all main cities of this exotic and somehow surrealist but happy country.

An observation from my point of view, as someone from the US.
One thing people often don't think about (including most people from the US) is that the US is very young, relatively speaking. The historical buildings in Mexico are way older than our country, and many of the "not-super-old-but-not-quite-modern" buildings (which are still perfectly functional!) are just as old as the oldest buildings in the US. This kind of skews the opinion of how modern things really are in Mexico, I think.
Another thing is that it is protrayed that way in movies, etc. And I think there probably are some of those "old sleepy and dusty towns lost in the middle of the desert", but those also exist in the US, and probably just about anywhere with enough open space... You rarely, if ever, see a movie where it is set in an area of Mexico City with skyscrapers, etc. Since many people from the US don't travel much (>50% of people in the US don't have a valid passport...), their impression of other places is only what they see in movies.

Note that I did not say that everyone in the US is ignorant or stupid. But many people are oblivious to the fact that they are being manipulated and programmed. The energy overall is much better in Mexico than the US.

@@s6y9l thanks a lot for your comment, and your nice approach to it. Nonetheless, I live in Germany 😅😜. Yet, these stereotypes are, I daresay, universal. I’m told these things almost by everyone I meet (everyone untactful enough. Of course, some people would know saying these things is not exactly what a Mexican would like to listen to, even if their knowledge to the country IS that). 🙂🙂
I mean, there’s no kidding, all those things are true, but it kinda hurts to be seen as JUST that. The worst time was once when I went to a party, and a random dude ran to me and asked “are you the Mexican of the party? I’d like to talk about the cartels, I think it’s a super interesting topic!”. And I was like “yeah... my name is Rodrigo. Very nice meet you... (read that last bit with utmost sarcasm).

Other thing annoys quietly is lo hear a US immigrant say "I'm an American coming from America" really???? So what I am?? You can make a video from all over America saying: in Praguay, I'm American from America . El Salvador, I'm American from America. Peru, I'm American from America. Mexico I'm American from America, etc.

    • @ReikiontheRun

It's a hard habit to break because you grow up hearing you're an American. One of the most played songs when I was growing up was "Proud to be an American". It's not that we don't know geography, it's just what we call ourselves since America is part of the country name...we aren't trying to hog the continent! I never knew it bugged people until I came to Mexico, but I get it.

    My man Paul!
Good to see you posting again, and hearing your charismatic voice and positive attitude on these times is a real treat.
I wanted to recommend you go try some carnitas tacos in Mercado Roma. One thing I'd like you to know about me, is this saying I have for carnitas; "Anyone can make carnitas tacos and sell them in Mexico, but not anyone can make carnitas how it should be".
Now, that might sound "muy mamon" from my part, but honestly, it's a damn shame to see that carnitas are so readily available but barely anyone puts the care into making them and it's disrespectful to the clients and the pigs used to make the dish.
Now, on Mercado Roma, there is one butcher shop almost in the corner of the actual market square (since the 3 other corners all have exits or they continue as a hallway to smaller non-food shops). The butchery is called Meche y Rafael and they set up tables on saturday mornings at 9am till 12 or 1pm (or earlier if they sell out) with freshly made carnitas and chicharron hot and ready to be sold to eat there or be taken out to your home.
They only open on Saturday mornings and they are bona fide world famous now since they have gone to foreign events like Taco Libre in Dallas, TX. where they were sent by the Mexican government of the time to represent authentic taco places from Mexico, and they have also been covered by PBS on their show "Mexico: One Plate at a Time, with Rick Bayless" and the word of mouth of tourists that stumbled upon the place or went there due to hearing about it before.
I'm proud about them and have taken people there that aren't really fans of carnitas but are impressed by how amazing the quality and taste of the tacos they have are since they probably had mediocre experiences before.
And also, I hope this is still around in the mercado, but just down the butcher lane there is a crossroads where to your left is more of the mercado, straight ahead continuing until you reach another corner of it, or to the right where a lot of homecook style restaurants are crammed in that has an exit to Coahuila street.
In this crossroads there is a place called "Helados Palmeiro" which as the name suggests in spanish, is an Ice Cream shop that sells one of the best ice creams that I've tried in the city, and also the best damn malted shakes I've had. They are just called "Malteadas" which is usually just a milkshake anywhere else you order one in Mexico, but this guy actually has the "Malteadas con malta" that sounds redundant since malt is already in the name "Malteada" but it is necessary so clients know that they can get an honest to god, old school style malted shake that most people have never tried before and that is the perfect, decadent place to go for dessert after the carnitas tacos.
Stay safe carnal, I wish you the best and hope to see more of you soon!
