  • Power Stroke is a name used by a family of diesel engines for trucks produced by Ford Motor Company since 1994. Along with its use in the Ford F-Series (including the Ford Super Duty trucks), applications include the Ford E-Series, Ford Excursion, and Ford LCF commercial truck; the name was also used for a diesel engine used in South American production of the Ford Ranger.

The first engine to bear the Power Stroke name, the 7.3L Power Stroke V8 is the Ford version of the Navistar DT444E turbo-diesel V8. Introduced in 1994 as the replacement for the 7.3L IDI V8, the Power Stroke/T444E is a completely new engine, with only its bore and stroke dimensions common with its predecessor (resulting in its identical 444 cubic-inch displacement). In line with the IDI diesel.
The 1994.5 to 1996/97 DI Power stroke has "single shot" HEUI (hydraulically actuated electronic unit injection) fuel injectors and ran a high pressure oil pump (HPOP) to create the necessary oil pressure to fire the fuel injectors. This generation of Power Stroke utilizes an HPOP with a 15° swash plate angle. The 1995-1997 trucks use a cam-driven fuel pump, whereas the 1999-2003 trucks use a frame rail mounted electric fuel pump. The California trucks from 1996 and 1997 have split-shot fuel injectors; other trucks did not get split-shot injectors until 1999. Single-shot injectors only inject one charge of fuel per cycle, whereas the split-shot injector releases a preliminary light load before the main charge to initiate combustion in a more damped manner.
It utilizes a single turbocharger with a turbine housing size of 1.15 A/R. In 1999, an air-to-air intercooler was added to cool the charged air from the turbo for increased air density. With the new cooler, denser air would increase the horsepower potential of the engine, while also reducing exhaust gas temperatures (EGT). Eventually, the turbine housing was changed to a .84 A/R and a wastegate was added. With larger injectors, the HPOP output was increased by utilizing a 17° swash plate angle to meet the requirements of the new, higher flowing injectors.
The 7.3L DI Power Stroke was in production until the second quarter of model year 2003 when it was replaced by the 6.0L because of its inability to meet newer emission requirements. Nearly 2 million 7.3s were produced from International's Indianapolis plant.
The 7.3 L (444 CID) Power Stroke was replaced by the 6.0 L (365 CID) beginning in the second quarter of the 2003 model year. The 6.0L Power Stroke, was used in Ford Super Duty trucks until the 2007 model year but lasted until 2009 in the Ford Econoline vans (model year 2010) and in the Ford Excursion SUVs until after the 2005 models when Ford discontinued Excursion production. The engine has a 3.74 in (95 mm) bore and 4.13 in (105 mm) stroke creating a displacement of 365 cu in (6.0 L) or 5,954 cc. It utilizes a variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler, producing 325 hp (242 kW) and 570 lb⋅ft (773 N⋅m) torque with an 18:1 compression ratio, with fuel cutoff at 4,200 rpm. Many poorly maintained or modified 6.0 L Power Stroke engines experienced problems.

Barky Barker I worked for a guy for several years pulling a 38ft trailer with a 2000 dually 7.3. I put a lot of hard miles on her while I was going to college. Came home and helped a friend rebuild the oil cooler on it and she had almost 500,000 miles on the clock... I think that says everything about the 7.3.

I’m on the other side of the coin. Have a 12V, but if I didn’t have one, I’d have a 7.3. They’re a touch harder to work on than a 12V (but what isn’t harder to work on than a 12V, you can fix it with a hammer.), but even as far as the look of the trucks go, the OBS 7.3’s and the super duty 7.3’s are both easier on the eyes than a 2G dodge. First gen dodge is probably better to look at than the fords…but I’m not gonna throw down 30 grand for a nice first gen.

I’m with you. There is something comforting about doing 6.0 diags. Because at this point everything that could ever go wrong with that motor has been documented. When I first started working on them I hated the hot no start diag. Now it’s no sweat. I work on a lot of 6.0’s but I drive a 7.3, however if I was to buy another truck it would probably be a 6.0

BundysGarage It could be lots of things. Most of the time it’s a high pressure oil leak. Typically it’s a dummy plug or standpoint. Other things can be injector orings or fuel rail orings. 10 years ago things weren’t so well documented and these engines drove techs crazy. Now everything that can go wrong with a 6.0 has been figured out. Plenty of Factory and aftermarket solutions for the many 6.0 issues.

The 7.3 is clearly the engine to have, particularly the pre-‘02/‘03 ones with forged connecting rods. International designed this engine for commercial use from the start, so it’s tough! Don’t expect any other Powerstroke to pull a Class 6 truck with payload reliably for 400k+ miles. But the 7.3 was born for it.

Frank Morreale size of connecting rods doesn’t matter if you put the 7.3 with a fuel system of a 6.4 or 6.7 it would probably split the block and be broke constantly. With big power comes more broken stuff. Why do you think the 5.9 and 7.3 both run forever they both have the lowest power numbers. Soon as dodge made the 6.7 they to ran into issues of failure. Personally no matter how hard they are to work on the 6.4 is my favorite ford. They can make power easier than any other ford engine that’s why they break. You can take a stock truck and run a 300 hp tune and it will run it. Lift pump is about the only thing that makes much difference. 6.4 failure points was in the stock regen system once deleted its 100x better.

    The 7.3’s are peaches (and I’m a mechanical Cummins guy, but I’d I didn’t have a Cummins, I’d want a 7.3.)
An old friend of mine is a farm mechanic. Bought a 01 or 03 F350 dually with a service box and the ZF6 six speed new. That truck has had a hard, hard life. Service box has always been loaded, sits at 14-15,000 pounds, truck always has the skid steer trailer behind it, it’s always in a muddy field out to fix a broken tractor, it’s got farm kids driving it (and they’re hard on equipment!). I think he said the biggest job he ever had to do to that truck is replacing the clutch. No serious engine issues other than oil leaks. 350,000 miles on the truck.
Another CZcams Chanel, powerstrokehelp, has a 7.3 truck. It’s one of the shop trucks, pulls a trailer, runs around, ETC. It’s got a great big sticker on the tailgate…’THIS TRUCK HAS 875,000 MILES.’
I’ve seen a engine tear down on an engine that was owned by I believe the city of chicago. 800,000 miles on this engine. There was still crosshatch in the cylinder’s.
And just like a mechanical Cummins, you can turn them up, and they’re still reliable. Even with the PMR rods, you can still turn them up to 4-500 horse without really worrying about it to much.

Have had a 2004 (Brazil built) F250 7.3 Navistar (International) T444E engined Superduty 4x4 since 2006. Bought it with 104,000kms used as the 2nd owner, and still have it now, 2018, so its 14 years old & ive owned it the last 12 years BUT it only has 170,000 kms on it now so I’ve added only 66,000 kms in 12 years, so only about 5000kms or 3000 Miles a year added on average.
Only issues I’ve had in that time?
Had to change out an IDM (Injector drive module) located up inside the LH front mudguard, after a creek crossing got magnetic black sands out of the muddy water all along the IDM connector pins bus bar, that created a track path for 4 of the 8 cylinders on one bank of the V8.
It was under warranty (Extended Ford warranty), BUT there was no Ford Dealer within 1000kms in any direction, so being a iron ore mining town full of heavy duty diesel mechanics Ford verbally authorised repairs with a local diesel mechanic shop. It took 3 repairers, 8 months, and about $8000 odd dollars to get it diagnosed and running again & that included $1k for the “Engineuity” diagnostic program dingle & non IBD11 unlock code from USA to figure out what was wrong!
Of course Ford then refused to pay up leaving me to foot the entire bill!
Other than that I’ve had to do a HPOP “O” ring replacement, the heater core leaked, so I bypassed it, still waiting to repair it!
CD player ate my CD’s and won’t play them or give them back.
Other than that just normal oil & filter changes.
Not really complaining, it pulls pretty much anything I hook up behind it.
Biggest problem is I keep getting people wanting to buy it off me!
I paid $82K Aus for it in Dec 2006, & I get offers around $55-60K now for it used, because the mileage is so low at only 170,000kms or just a tad over 100,000 Miles, for its age & the fact it’s a 7.3
They command huge prices downunder, because finding RHD models isn’t easy.
The 2018 Lariat F250 in RHD configuration new downunder is no change from $150k.
They attract all sorts of exchange rate, import duty, luxury car tax and of course about $50k worth of RHD conversion cost once they get here from USA.
I’d replace it IF I could find anything comparable in towing capacity etc, at a even halfway comparable cost, which I just can’t do at the moment.

Next would be a 7.3 out of the 94 body style truck.....That truck is gorgeous.
Next would be a 6.7 just for the bells and whistles.
Next would be a non bulletproofed 6.0. Not a bad motor with no tune, just have to put money in the bank for when it pops.
Dead last would be the 6.4. Expensive to repair, throw away motor......just bad. Especially since it was just a bandaid for ford to get by the emissions until the 6.7 came out.
