For some reason I received a promobox of panty liners when I was 11 or 12 that came with a pamflet explaining what discharge was. I never used panty liners for it, but I was happy with the info. When I brought it up during sex ed my teacher dismissed the existence of discharge. She was very pregnant at the time and insisted that she was still leaking sperm, but that no one else in class could be experiencing discharge. I just remember thinking to myself how dumb she was and how I was just trying to inform my classmates. I'm still kind of shook at the amount of misinformation.

Like I was so scared those around me could smell my vagina and secretly thought I was gross (thanks anxiety..) Instead of going to the doctor I thought using those vaginal cleaning wipes would help with my insecurities and instead I got the yeast infection of a lifetime! Definitely should never use those products! Honestly it’s terrible how companies make products that feed on women’s insecurities and make us feel like we need to be ashamed out our vaginas.

One thing I was explained once that has helped tremendously is that we say ovulation occurs at day 14 in a 28-day cycle BUT it is more accurate - and more helpful - to say ovulation happens 14 days before your periods (no matter the length of your cycle).

    • @JK-rw8zn
      @JK-rw8zn Pƙed 4 lety +2

That's not entirely true. Most women have a luteal phase length of between 12 and 16 days (the luteal phase starts the day after ovulation and ends the day before your period). It is possible for the luteal phase to be shorter or longer than this, though if it is 10 days or less it may cause fertility issues.

As a person with a vagina, it's wonderful to hear normalization of shit I have a super complicated relationship with. Even without dysphoria, society definitely did enough damage to make me uncomfortable regardless. And I've always known logically that I shouldn't. I encourage other people with vaginas to love and understand the normal processes of their body bc it's healthy and necessary, but I know why it's hard for so many of us to actually get to that acceptance ourselves, with our own bodies. Thank you!

My mum has always used panty liners and thus so did I... I think, incredibly, we were taught about discharge at school at the same time as the period chat. Also it's ok that your underwear get messed up, I'd get frustrated about this since it often goes through to the inside of my pants. But panty liners keep your vagina from breathing, and cotton underwear are the best to make sure it gets enough air! Silk underwear or liners can cause the area to become more smelly

This is so important!! I was NEVER taught about discharge and it became a source of *major* anxiety when my vagina started leaking in my pre-teens, especially when combined with being super late to the period party. I thought there was something seriously wrong with me! All those years of just peeing with it and suddenly it's creating this viscous fluid, almost daily???
I worried about it being a medical problem. I was taught that pads are for periods, so I just used toilet paper to line my underwear like a moron. At the time, I also wasn't very educated on what being intersex was and I got it stuck in my head that it must be sperm or something (also didn't know what male ejaculate actually looked like, obviously). None of the other girls talked about getting white goop, and I was probably the last person I knew to get my period (16 years old!), so what else was there that it could be?
*TL;DR:* It's incredibly important to teach people with vaginas about differences their body will experience throughout puberty, especially in relation to "normal" vagina stuff. Otherwise, they might freak out when their body starts creating a substance no one else ever talks about

I didn't get to hear about discharge being a thing until I was 11, and even then, what I was taught was completely wrong, so I continued freaking out about discharge stuff until I was in my 20s really!
Basically, I wish preteen/teenage me had your videos to watch! You're doing a good thing in the world, Hannah đŸ™đŸ»

"fanny snot" - that's gross but also adorable :D
For real though, what you were experiencing was probably what we call "Weißfluss" (literally white flow) in German - I could not find the English translation, but it's the first discarge girls get when their ovaries slowly start functioning during puberty. It's said that, if you notice Weißfluss, you'll likely get your period during the next 12 months. :)

Perfect timing. I just got my IUD taken out after 6 years and it’s indescribably nice to have my natural discharge back. The IUD made it thicker and white which I didn’t much care for. But also, this is my first time in adulthood not taking hormones via birth control so I’m excited to complete a few cycles and see what my true normal is!

Thank you for destigmatizing this. It is something that I have been dealing with ever since my body came to maturity around a lovely age of nine (now 45). It is almost continuous and I had to wear light day pads every day. I discovered menstrual underwear which are fabulous. I use Bambody brand & have had an easier time & A LOT less stink caused from the fluid. Plastic light day pads trapped the fluid & didn’t allow it to evaporate naturally through the day. The bamboo menstrual underwear however allowed the area to breathe while also keeping fluid contained. Thus the smell factor left too. I hope this can help other viewers as well.

i feel so lucky to have had a friend growing up whose sister was super open with her about discharge. my friend talked about it so casually and it just instilled in me from a young age how normal discharge is, so i never really had any discomfort or shame around it. hopefully by having these conversations online, more people will have that kind of experience :-)

I am an RN, and am all for education about our bodies. I am also a heterosexual man who has a lot of experience with cunnilingus, and I have to tell you the vaginal discharge does not taste bad. In fact, I rather enjoy the taste, though for aesthetics sake I avoid the creamy discharge (it diesn't taste bad, either). Having your partner go down on you with some knowledge of your cycle and output could help in identifying problems early, such as yeast infections. There is also a certain scent that I have noticed when she is close to menstrating. Unfortunately, the smell of blood is a bad sign in pregnancy- my ex lost 3 to miscarriages, and I could smell them before they were obvious. Knowing how your partner's sex organs behave is very beneficial in many ways.

Omg where was this video when me and my boyfriend first got together 😭
"No I'm not douching my fanny"
"No I'm not going to replace my granny knickers with fancy lacy ones. ... No, because my fanny juice destroys everything I love. Also cotton is the only thing it can cope with. ... No you can't get a replacement fanny."
"Babe it's totally normal... you never complain when we're having sex!"
    - and other fun weekend conversations hahaha
Honestly he doesn't half winge/tease me about my undies choice (JOKINGLY) but I don't have time to get thrush or UTIs every other week! Fancy undies are reserved for date night or "let me slip into something more uncomfortable" moments and I don't really want to stain them if I can help it cos he USED TO pull this face and it kinda ruined the effect so.... :/ (he doesn't any more! Just a little "huh nice... someone's happy to see me" 😂 #TMI)
Edit: just for clarity - this was at the START of our relationship. (Lol death by autocorrect and wine before dinner!) I was lucky enough to be his first Proper Girlfriend and i got his virginity - I was actually on my period first time we got down, it looked like he'd murdered someone and then had to walk through 3 corridors to the shared sinks at 3pm in the afternoon👌 ah student halls from the 60s 👌
We're now 5 years in and he's much more chill with everything haha I really appreciate the concern from y'all but I promise it's a healthy relationship in and out the bedroom ❀ (Hannah your community is lovely just FYI) ❀

I have a hang up about other people touching my knickers. I pretty much never let it happen. I prefer to remove my own clothes for sex.
I have found that most of the sexy clothing removal scenes in movies don’t turn out to be sexy in real life. Usually something gets stuck or caught. My earrings catch on hair and thread all the time, but when I’m removing my top I notice sooner than my partner typically does so I can stop a hard yank from injuring my earlobe.
I don’t think I would put up with someone who made faces at my knickers. Reminds me of people I call “poppers”. The type of person who gets up and heads for the shower immediately after sex. Won’t deal with that type either.

Boys often have this expectancy of us to be able to wear the sexy outfits and underwear at the drop of a hat if not all the time it’s quite ridiculous but I think it’s probably because our gender rarely make it normal to acknowledge the ups and downs that our bodies go through until we’ve locked them into a long term relationship

    • @LemonSte
      @LemonSte Pƙed 4 lety +3

I mean this is in the kindest possible way - your boyfriend is a manchild and you deserve better lol. And i don't judge you at all, before I got with my current partner I had such a low expectations for male behaviour and I didn't even realise it. My boyfriend has never once been disgusted by my discharge, period blood, (or body hair, even though he has preferences that we compromise on). He's thrilled when I buy something new and sexy to wear for him, but I wore the most boring ass underwear for like the first year we were together and he never said a word about it. Grown men should know how the female anatomy works, or if they're inexperienced, at least be willing and open to learn. It makes me really sad that you don't get to feel sexy just because he's a baby about normal bodily functions and wants to micromanage your clothing choices :( It;s always a big red flag for me when men get into a relationship with a woman and are are confused when she isn't something out of a porno. not even pornstars are like pornstars 24/7.

I learnt it was normal when I was 18 (I'm 20 now) as no-one ever talked about it - not parents, teachers, friends, no-one. I grew up feeling so ashamed of myself and embarrassed and uncomfortable that despite now knowing it's normal, I still have underlying fear and embarrassment about it. The strangest part for me was I had almost no sex ed when I was growing up from teachers and parents (about anything: sexuality, safe sex, self-sex (lol), pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, puberty so it's all been weird and uncomfortable for me) so I learnt everything I know now from friends and the internet. And yet I found nothing on discharge until 18 years old. Even the internet and websites that helped me with the basics didn't talk about it. I snuck out and bought pantyliners in secret at 14 years old because I was so ashamed.
I know exactly what not to do with my own kids, that's for sure.
Thank you so much for this. I've learnt a lot from you over the years and, even at 20, this is still more than helpful.

New respect for The Body Shop for being willing to sponsor this video. Shouldn't be a touchy subject but here we are. Thought that was pretty cool.

Never thought I would watch or comment on a video on discharge haha, but here I am and: Go Hannah!
For me this is one of the reasons why I like tracking my cycle. I learned about how discharge related to my cycle through the app I use to track my cycle: Clue. Clue has an standard setting that shows your ovulation. I remember that initially I didn't see a reason for me (as a student, not at all thinking about getting pregnant) to want to know that. But as it was an automatic setting I kept in on, and through time I started seeing patterns of how the days with more discharge were around ovulation. (can't really believe I'm typing this for the world wide web to see haha) I think tracking your cycle is such a helpful tool to get to know your body better, and learn things like this that we never get taught.

I love it and would recommend it to anyone with an skin that easily get red and blemished and spotted.

Applause for the Gandalf scene! I love thinking about my cervix as the Gandalf of my Uterus now. I remember when I was a young teen I very grudgingly tried to ask my mum about vaginal discharge because I didn't know if it was normal (and this was pre-Google) and she gave me a really curt answer and dismissed it. Ever since then I never really knew what was normal or not and was too ashamed to ask anyone else ever. So THANK YOU for making this video. I grew up in a very anti-uncomfortable conversation household and have had to work through a ton of shame around sex/my body, and your videos have been so helpful and taught me a lot. Plus you're adorable and funny so it's much more fun than a Google search.
