      Yah our mechanics made hella money off these. A regular wiper motor replacement netted us a couple hundred bucks. A Mercedes was grand just to get started. These motors bought us alot of shots at the bar across the street. It was a few grand to replace the headlights and headlight wipers on a old mercedes we had in. I cashed out a Ford Taurus right before that got a new transmission. The wipers and headlight were more money than the transmission.(like almost 4k vs 2k) LMAO. The thing was the owners were proud of how much money they poured into their expensive ass cars. And looked down on people who didnt have to steam shovel money to keep them on the road. They were proud to pay. It was awesome.

    Sitting in my W140 using my wipers and watching the driver side wiper doing its magic dance by extending and retracting. The only draw back as said in video is, wiping speed during heavy rain is a bit slower than regular, not as bad as single but slower than my 09 corolla on its fastest setting. That and complexity and added Parts that are expensive or hard to find a working replacement/ requires longer replacement time… mine actually just stopped doing the jump/retract and works like a normal wiper. I manually pull or push the wiper arm manually when it rarely extends fully and goes past the edge. Will fix it sometime soon.

    its better then other wipers.. a Mercedes Benz is expensive regardless.. i believe that the design change came because the windshields are larger and Mercedes wanted to cut production cost to compete with bands like Toyota,Honda,ford from a financial standpoint..Mercedes new slogan.."nothing but the cheapest,we need to save money"

      The monowioer had a tendency to leave streaks that owners often complained about. If the wiper “insert”, aka wiper blade, is new it works great, as the rubber ages it begins to leave streaks along its complete path of travel. Since the monowiper travels the complete windshield it streaks the whole glass. Plus it was expensive and complicated, so MB axed it. I love it personally, just keep the blade new and clean and it’s wonderful.

    Cool animation. But the whole concept is silly by overcomplicating something that worked fine and was so simple. 1 wiper is better suited for a square window. 2 wipers are better suited for the rectangular shape of a windshield.

      It did wipe 25% more surface area than a standard two wiper setup. In the end that wasn’t enough to justify the complexity.

      @TehoTarve Před 5 lety +1

      It's not similar, it's a single wiper with double arms. Many small cars and 4-wheel mopeds nowadays use a design like that. Pontiac Grand Safari 1976 has a similar function on the driver's side wiper (it's a very wide car), though it does'nt look like a double-arm; the passenger side has a normal wiper.

  • @richardharrold9736
    @richardharrold9736 Před 10 lety +1

    Typical bloody Merc to make things so complicated when they could have driven this mono wiper with a direct reversible motor drive to the centre spindle with exactly the same effect - instead of which they had to use a constant single-direction motor, a crank, a con-rod and two rocker arms to pull the hub back and forth... ridiculous! I suppose one could even achieve the blade extension using a simple solenoid and a variable resistor...

    • @mekanizmalar
      @mekanizmalar  Před 10 lety +1

      Dear Richard, thank you for your comment. I agree with you 100 percent. Hawing two wiper in my car accomplishing same effect never bothered me. I always believe that complexity makes machines prone to break down. However to learn new mechanisms give you a new perspective.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 Před 10 lety +3

      mekanizmalar I understand M-B claimed superior coverage from this single wiper. To be fair, I've never heard of these things breaking, and I know people who've owned these Mercs for 20+ years. I like the design, I just think it could be simplified with either a motor driving the centre spindle and retaining the planetary gear, crank and piston to make the wiper reach into the corners, or even to do away with the planetary gear and use a solenoid to do the same.

    • @justcarcrazy
      @justcarcrazy Před 10 lety +4

      There is also the advantage of the monoblade that one design can be used in both LHD and RHD countries without any changes to the sheet metal.
      Then again, they have to swop most other things from left to right et vice versa anyway.

      ***** i know a lot of people who have had the monoblade on mercs, including me (not only w124's but also w201s and w210s) and one problem that can occur is the lack of lubrication then the wiper might act slowly or almost get stuck in the out/inward motion. but otherwise i havent heard anything else.
      the wipers on my w123 (2 regular) work allright and i've never in my life used the fast wipers on any car because to me it is a distraction, so for me the "long time" it takes for one wiper to do the windscreen doesnt bother me.
      greetz.

  • @wernerdanler2742
    @wernerdanler2742 Před 4 lety

    I actually hate the mono wiper on my car. I am going to have to take it out of the car and all apart just to replace the grommet which seals the base to the windscreen. Why did they not make the blade removable from the top. The cover has screws which go in from the bottom. So you have to remove and disassemble the whole thing in order to do that. Bad engineering!

    • @storm4710
      @storm4710 Před 3 lety +1

      it should be easy to remove the blade

    • @wernerdanler2742
      @wernerdanler2742 Před 3 lety +1

      @@storm4710 I was not referring to the blade. That's fairly easy.
      The whole mechanism, motor and all, are not hard to get off the car either. But you then have to disassemble it in order to replace the rubber boot that seals it to the firewall. The center pin where the arm pivots in the mechanism is supposed to slide out but I couldn't get it out.
      Anyway I stretched the boot over the whole thing. I was afraid it would tear but it is very tough and I got it on there.
      That boot keeps water out of the firewall to keep it from rusting.
      I pated myself on the back on that one. Lol
